I think it's likely that children were used as slaves in the early days, Cremators were 100% made by them, but after the remaining children grew too big, for the most part Cremator production would stop (There probably would still be some Cremators being made... Dwarfs and smaller individuals in general do exist, which actually does explain why everyone in Half-Life we see is like in the late 5 foot to 6 foot range.) I think that's a really good reason why we don't see Cremators in the games. There aren't any new ones being made, so they've become a rarity. With some of them being discarded with once the Combine made the cities and cleaned everything up a bit. Since the charred bodies in the sewers are possibly Cremator victims and the head in Eli's lab are fairly good indicators that they exist in some form or another, it is food for thought!
Cremator is too big and clumsy to travel in sewers. It was Civil Protection that used explosive barrels to clear out canals Cremators do exist in HL universe but Freeman didn't encounter one

When playing Half-Life 2, I never really think about what happened to the kids. It always felt like a creepy anecdote in a much darker story. No one ever talks about why there aren't any kids except for in reference to the suppression field. HL2, how Breen said we needed it. EP1, when Kleiner told the Resistance and surviving humans that the suppression field was down and that everyone should take advantage to save the human race. Draining the earths oceans of it's water makes no sense when you consider how much water you'll find the asteroid belt and various moons compared to what you'll find on earth. Not to mention all of the comets.
The combine don't have FTL, from what has been shown. They can't travel far within a reality, but they can travel to different ones. For all their might, a trip to the asteroid belt would need them to haul spacecraft from one reality through to the other, and then assemble, fuel and launch it... To then bring all that frozen water back to the planet. Better to start with the local resources then move outwards.
The combine just thought they may as well do so, what they really wanted a in-universe teleportation method. They decided to just wait for humanity to finish a in-universe teleportation device.
That moment when you first emerge from the apartments and hear the distant echos of children puts chills up my spine. The first time I played the game that part really freaked me out. I spun the merry go round really fast and started tossing objects at it to watch them get kicked off. Then I picked up the doll that makes the cry noise... oh hell no... ☠️

I think the suppression field is spookier because it's something that no human power, however awful they might have been, has been ale to do on that scale.
I've read recently off of a fanfiction that there is a theory that most if not all of Earths remaining children were likely rounded up and sent to one city. Being cut off from their families, with the only adults being those in their late teens, or early 20's or of course the Civil Protection and the Overwatch Soldiers. It would make sense and sounds very much like something the Combine would do. Edit: also, the Children could only really leave until they reached adulthood and just to be transferred around to other cities around like the other Adults
Hi, I know this is a late reply, but I wanted to mention that the only means the children and teens had of contacting the outside world was of the aid of a rebel cell that smuggled in letters via weekly supply shipments.
This is what really gave them the energy to fight… they literally had nothing to lose. Die now, or later. What is for sure… doing nothing and complying would’ve lead to their extinction anyways
I gotta say, your videos are what keep me invested in Half-Life, I love your content, you have to keep these kind of videos up, I like the slow transitions into scenes while your calm and soothing voice narrates what did happen, what is happening, and what will happen. Can you do a video on the nature of Gman, specifically his Lovecraftian form? If possible, that is. There doesn't seem to be much information about his true nature, but I bet half life 3 was meant to explore that. Another idea is the Combine empire's true form. Are they a single civilization? Are they multiversal? How old are they? Why does the Gman take actions against their objectives?
The more I think about half life 2 the more cool ideas I feel like could've been in the game but just kind of never were. Like if we look at the events of half life 2 we see only a small portion of what the world has to offer from the eyes of gordon, we see the biggest parts too but we also miss out on a lot. Stalkers weren't in the original half life 2 but they still existed, we just simply didn't see them until episode 1, the advisors were a thing that existed but weren't shown all the way until the events of episode 2. This is just because they likely didn't think about making or implementing them until episode 1 and 2, but this also implies that there are things happening in the background that we don't or aren't going to notice until later on. I think they could make some interesting in-between stories of half life 2 involving other characters from other parts of the world, seeing how the combine adapts to different climates and areas or even repurposes certain cultural architecture into their own locations, and how certain alien creatures also adapt to it as well.
Fun fact; it is now 20 years since Half Life 2 came out. The same length of time that the Combine had controlled Earth. That means we're finally getting Half Life 3 this year
My question is: why bother?? Like, the combine have such immense numbers, once they find all individuals willing to join their army, why even keep the rest alive???
@@spiderplant to drain the earth of its resources also. The combine also saw humanity as an 'infestation' and wanted to slowly kill them over time. They reduced life to only the basic necessities and killed anyone for any reason. Humanity was essentially going to be dead soon no matter what.
Out of the two, I can’t help but feel the utter lack of children is far more haunting and devastating. Compared to having them act as slaves for the Combine. It’s one thing for children to be in terrible conditions. It’s another for there to be none at all. For the main purpose of humanity to have been stripped from them, for our futures to have been forcefully ripped from us. The feeling must be beyond painful, a devastating loss the likes of which we couldn’t fathom. To know that you’re the last of your kind, and that no matter how hard you may try, you just can’t have any children. People may say they don’t want children, but to not even have the option is something no one could fathom. And it isn’t like they don’t know what they’ve lost, the fact that “Non Mechanical Reproduction Simulation” is a perk you can chose as a part of the Civil Protection Unit suggests that it’s a valuable commodity. It isn’t just that people can’t have kids anymore, it’s that the suppression field in effect completely removes the “urges” meaning you can’t even attempt it. Your body can’t make the proteins needed, and it lacks the ability to initiate the act. I personally believe that the released build has a more terrifying way of handling children. It’s so foreign, so alien, that it fits the Combine in ways unfathomable. Plus who knows, there is a chance that the beta plans did happen in universe after the 7 Hour War, after all there were billions of children alive at the time, they just grew up into the people we’ve met in the game. Those children are what we would consider “Gen Z” since that’s when they were born, before the events of Half-Life, and since Half-Life 2 takes place somewhere in the 2020s, it means that anyone born in between then and now doesn’t exist. There might be versions of us in that universe who have suffered under the Combine’s rule, it’s just not exactly a pleasant thought to consider. I wonder where our alternate universe counterparts have settled into, are they working for the Combine? Do they fight for the Resistance? Or are they just normal citizens? Who knows… we obviously never prepared for the unforeseen consequences of Black Mesa and Dr.Breen’s actions, no one did.
Gives me an idea for my AU of Half-Life. The Birthing Factory. It’s a place where the Combine would make humans by combining DNA samples, without over-populating reproduction. The human would be born at the age of 20 and be kept in the facility for 5 months before they were escorted to the selection process.
i feel like it could be a middle ground, where at first the children were used for labor but after the task they were used for was completed they were disposed of. Another idea i have no evidence for could be that the children were turned into the combine soldiers and stalkers
The reality of HL2 is arguably worse than, but unarguably different to 1984. We're living in what's pretty close to George Orwell's 1984 right now. The difference is not everyone has given in, yet.
I want to ask something about the number of citadels on Earth, first of all English is not my first language so may be thats the problem here. When I read this sentence: "The destructive pulse forced a damper on the entire network of linked Citadel reactors." I think that is talking about the reactors inside the Citadel, a single one but, people always say that there are more so, does this sentence truly implies that there are Citadels in plural?
I never really understood the child timescales. In the ~20 years that passed, the Combine didn’t invade instantaneously… by the time they did invade, humanity’s forces were at breaking point from portal storms and Xen wildlife, with the remaining humans mostly gathered into defensible cities. That must have taken a few weeks, perhaps a few months. Then I doubt the suppression field was activated quickly; the Combine would have needed enough time to study human anatomy and create the field - which formed part of the City 17 Citadel (which I hear was still under construction in HL: Alyx, 15 years after HL. It would have taken time to select City 17 and construct enough of the Citadel to include the field. For that reason, I am of the opinion that likely the youngest people in HL2 are likely 18… possibly 16. I also think that the suppression field not only killed unborn children, but also infants and those not developed enough to withstand its effects. We know Alyx was “a little girl” by the time of HL and she was robust enough to survive, being in her early 20s in HL2. With all the above said, I am of the opinion the suppression field was likely activated 2-5 years after HL and likely killed children up to 2 or perhaps 3 years old.
Well, I mean consistent world building is not Half-Lifes strongest point cause while making the series Gaben and the team used what is called Scientific Mysticism Narrative - it allowed both for plausible sci-fi elements like evil highly advanced alien Empires with energy weapons and teleportation from another universe and mystical Noosphere psionic hermit green lighting magic lighting bolt from DnD flinging mini-cyclops to exist in the same franchise. Kinda like W40K where you have advanced powered by science, atomic energy and fuel giant robots, massive space ships and exo-suites/power armor on one hand and on the other hand literall magical demons from figurative-literall Hell and Chaos space warlocks and sorcerers.
I wonder how the original devs who made the lore, thought up a way how the combine could prevent people from partaking in coitus? The only way that would be possible to achieve it, is to have citizens literally segregated. Yet I think in HL2 we saw that citizens weren't segregated. The combine offering the civil protection this benefit also implies that people still had these urges, you think the combine would have developed some chemical to put into the water to just kill off peoples urges.
I can’t imagine living under the Combine. And so suddenly too. I went to bed free, and woke up with a whole war having started and ended, and we have new overlords. Oh… I didn’t plan to live my life the way I wanted anyway.
This video was a lot more horrifying than I was expecting. To answer your question, as others guessed, I'm sure child labour would have been a thing early on. I can imagine children below a certain age being torn from their families to be worked in factories and indoctrinated with Combine propaganda to become CP or maybe Overwatch soldiers when they grew up. Speaking of which, I'd love to see a more detailed video about the transhuman soldiers.
hey, skyrion, i have been meaning to ask: do you have enough material to maybe cover the cat that is mentioned throughout half life 2 by barney and kleiner?

I need to take a break from terrifying thoughts. I've already read too much (seen too much) and this is too much for now. It makes me weep that there is a segment of people who prey upon the completely helpless. To say it's degenerate is polite. You screw with children's minds or their bodies, you have signed a pact with evil which can never be undone.
I wouldn't want to bring a child into that world. I wouldn't want to brought into a world like that. Our job is to protect our innocent and give them a happy innocent childhood, it would be almost impossible to do so.

When I read this sentence: "The destructive pulse forced a damper on the entire network of linked Citadel reactors." I think that is talking about the reactors inside the Citadel, a single one but, people always say that there are more so, does this sentence truly implies that there are Citadels in plural?
I think that there was an error in the script. From what I know, there was only one Citadel, and other smaller Combine strongholds like Nova Prospekt.
@@Geiger_ As I thought. Thanks for the answer!
@@Geiger_but there was more Citadels in bete
Half-Life will always be the game above all others. Great Video dude!
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching!
Another great video! thank you Skyrionn!

Hitting the dark and griddy rn 🔥🔥🔥
Cool vid bro.😺
I can't believe George Orwell predicted Half Life 2
timetravel confirmed?
And he probably predicted the present day too
Well, I mean consistent world building is not Half-Lifes strongest point cause while making the series Gaben and the team used what is called Scientific Mysticism Narrative - it allowed both for plausible sci-fi elements like evil highly advanced alien Empires with energy weapons and teleportation from another universe and mystical Noosphere psionic hermit green lighting magic lighting bolt from DnD flinging mini-cyclops to exist in the same franchise.
Kinda like W40K where you have advanced powered by science, atomic energy and fuel giant robots, massive space ships and exo-suites/power armor on one hand and on the other hand literall magical demons from figurative-literall Hell and Chaos space warlocks and sorcerers.
Alyx brought the cremator head in Eli's lab, supposedly she found it too, pretty good otherwise.
I love your half life videos man
my head canon is that the dark HL2 beta is what the world was like shortly after the 7 hour war
Very well told, half life is truly terrifying
It truly is
I wonder how the original devs who made the lore, thought up a way how the combine could prevent people from partaking in coitus?
The only way that would be possible to achieve it, is to have citizens literally segregated. Yet I think in HL2 we saw that citizens weren't segregated.
The combine offering the civil protection this benefit also implies that people still had these urges, you think the combine would have developed some chemical to put into the water to just kill off peoples urges.
your videos always impressed me
I can’t imagine living under the Combine. And so suddenly too. I went to bed free, and woke up with a whole war having started and ended, and we have new overlords. Oh… I didn’t plan to live my life the way I wanted anyway.
It is quite odd to think that some people, in some parts of the world simply slept through the entire war.
Not all too different from whats happening in real life at the moment so...
I had the same impression when I began researching!
I agree with your point too. Transhuman soldiers are on the list. Just slowly working though it.
hey, skyrion, i have been meaning to ask: do you have enough material to maybe cover the cat that is mentioned throughout half life 2 by barney and kleiner?
Half Life 2: There are no Children Slavery around here.
L4d & L4d2: There is no Zombie Children around here too.
Nmrih: We have zombie Children too kill 😈😈😈
my takeaway, “dark and gritty”, and “humans live in a society”
The title and thumbnail is just cursed,
It is criminal that the rest of Half Life's lore was taken from us.
thank you for stopping the the use of "universal union"
I'm scared of kids now.
Honestly i would love to see a Combine Daycare but yet they have no chance of controlling any children.
Hyped for more half life beta stuff
"Future generations to come"
- Is that a joke?
Would it be possible that this is Canon being 10 years after the 7-hour war? Since Half-Life 2 is 20 years after the 7-hour war.
Half Life 2: Child slavery is bad. No children is worse!
Frostpunk: Stop having accidents at the factory, Timmy! The prosthesis are really expensive!
I always wonder if those who read 1984 ever read Homage to Catalonia by Orwell
I haven't but I'll look it up
“Dark and gritty” that’s what you so called real life citizens call my world.
*”fuck you” in crowbar*
I think the last generation aspect of retail, while understated, is so much more enthralling than kids being industrial slaves. I can free slaves, I'm down with that, i cant solve 20 years without making more people. That is functionally a truly lost generation.
A life of tortured servitude would be much worse than no life at all imo
10:45 child labor? In the inter-war period? How
Or more correctly
The DARKER Side of Life | Children
haha!
Perfect vid for me to watch while i set up the half life 1 disc on my computer bc my main drive is dead (RIP sierra)
Edit: the disc is TOO OLD to run on a windows 10 laptop... rip i guess
I double dog dare you to not use Triage At Dawn at the end of the video in your next video
What a thumbnail!
Radiation Hazard when child labour is in half life
The combine regime is what the World Economic Forum aspires to
What jews want
I wouldn't want to bring a child into that world. I wouldn't want to brought into a world like that.
Our job is to protect our innocent and give them a happy innocent childhood, it would be almost impossible to do so.
With that thought, humanity would have been extinct a long time ago.

"children as young as 5"
You got that from Hunt Down The Freeman, didn't you?
I got it from how children were treated in the Victorian Era haha
Glad to be here an hour late, Haha!
The title reminds me of that one meme
"Whats scarier than a rapist?" *adds child next to rapist*
Other guy: "A child....."
I love that clip
Very griddy
Skyrionn, is it okay for me to say that you are my hero? :)
That''s kind of you to say

I ask if it’s okay cause my girlfriend said an hour before you uploaded this “I’m coming over, you better be able to tell me the full lore surrounding children in half-life or I’m breaking up with you.”
I didn’t know what I was gonna do until you uploaded this.
You saved a man’s relationship!

At this point I would love just a book to close the Half Life story. Is that too much to ask?
I'd love a book too. More lore could be added.
Though I really just wanted to hear what the G-man has to say, in that distinctive voice and talking pattern. Actually I am aching to know what role the advisors play in HL3, But I will put aside my desire to actually fight one if I only get a book to write about it. @@Skyrionn
