Let me preface by saying i've never been in combat (outside of a cage). I believe that the fog of war, uncertainty, and tunnel vision are something that the average Joe (or even guys with experience) can't fathom. These guys did quite well considering the circumstances. I can't imagine what that was like for them. People who feel entitled to criticize others (who usually aren't experienced) are a dime a dozen. Any 15 year old with a computer that mom bought can imagine an ideal scenario in hindsight or from afar. It's pure fantasy, and because they'll likely never experience combat they'll never know how disgustingly entitled they are to make such criticisms.

RIP to the fallen US soldiers. It breaks my heart to see such a situation, and to see that even though the soldier knew he would likely die, he refused to leave behind his injured brother and fought to the death to try and save him.
From the other side of the vehicle they had better concealment/cover from the enemy. It also might have been hard to get into the vehicle under enemy fire. I think they made a choice that is was better to suppress enemy fire by continually firing on them, instead of trying to haul ass out of there. It was a terribly difficult situation in any case. As soon as they were separated their options became limited.
The SUVs were not armoured and were taking an insane amount of small arms fire by the time the call was made to withdraw. You can see them struggling to get in the vehicle during the ambush vid. Dustin Wright had to lie down and use his hands to manoeuvre the pedals whilst rounds hit the dashboard of the SUV. When Black was shot and killed you can see the SUV roll back as Wright jumps out to pull black behind to check his vitals. It’s pretty clear they had no chance at that point in jumping in and booking it. The Vehicle was being turned to cheese. They could only use it as a defensive cover until they were forced to book it on foot. They recovered the SUV later and there are pictures online of the damage it took.
Black was hit by the SUV... The SUV was recovered by Tuareg rebels; look at the pics. According to them it still ran when they took it from the “ISIS” guys (who took it from us). mobile.twitter.com/tmgneff/status/973908348784578560?lang=en

They severely underestimated the size of the enemy attack. Probably never imagined something so overwhelming would happen. They had 3 separate agendas as a team that created confusion once they realized how massive this attack was. Just pure chaos.
@@cejannuzi No. There were a little over 100 ISIL militants involved in the ambush. A combination of superior intelligence, better planning, and numbers allowed them to win this engagement. In short, they had all the cards. That said, it was a pyrrhic victory. The result of this engagement was not positive for ISIL forces in the region, as intensified US and French operations following the ambush killed a large number of ISIL militants, many of whom were likely involved in the ambush directly (e.g. French special forces recovered the side arm of on US military member killed). Arguably, a wiser course of action would have been to bomb the convoy with an IED, same effect and fewer consequences. Challenging the United States with a stand up force is not wise, even if you win an engagement or two such as this.
@Ahmed Ali first of all, this ambush happened in Africa, not Iraq. Second of all, those "girly faces" have some of the toughest combat training in the world and almost never take more losses than the enemy. Third of all, we know at least twenty enemies died because that's how many enemy corpses were found by the French and Nigerien reinforcements.
I have so much appreciation for and respect for how you both create and present this material. Please keep doing more videos like this. You have a lot of talent with explaining combat situations and visually displaying that explaination with detailed precision. Thanks again.
hello, I am a former French soldier, and I know this kind of terrain, for being there, these countries were part of our colonial empire, and it's been years that we fight there. And what I see, unfortunately, is an accumulation of errors, the first and most deadly of which is to underestimate the enemy. You should never go out on this kind of terrain without some firepower. We NEVER do it. Even our special forces are heavily armed on these lands, and in general, our opponents are fleeing us, they know what awaits them in case of confrontation. The most dangerous stuff is IEDs and RPG-type rockets. For the rest, in case of confrontation, the firepower that is deployed is so hellish that I even pity the guys across the street .... sometimes .... but this is the only way to have the minimum loss on our side (personally, I really like our 20 mm cannon loaded with piercing, explosive, incendiary ammunition, the gusts of this little monster are terrible, and in general .... definitive) for the rest your guys did what they could with inadequate means and tactics. Another thing, do not nested with elements of a foreign army in a convoy, it is a mistake of amateurs and specifically with units of these countries, do not wait for anything of their on the other hand, it is not their fault, they are soldiers who lack of means and training. But, well trained and well framed, they allowed France to have an empire. They have potential, but it is no longer used for a long time. In recent decades we have trained and equiped Chadian soldiers who are formidable warriors and a little our "armed arm" in Africa today. We also respect the Tuaregs a lot because we still have traditions in our army (which has many) that go back to the time of the Saharan meharist units when our army was patrolling the desert on camels. Coming back to the ambush, from what I've seen 3D simulations, in my opinion, their only chance to get out, it would have been that from the beginning of the enemy fire, it would have had to turn back, take refuge in the village, and call for help, at least the mirages could have bombed the area knowing where the friends were
This year in an airsoft game I talked to a military who participated to the rescue helicopter team (or maybe the revenge team, I forgot)... And he said exactly the same things. They did many mistakes, that obviously lead to their death. + the fact that they had no air intel.
A portable drone would of been a life saver. They would of got the fu#k out of there with quickness if they deployed a drone and saw everything they were up against. Were the portable drones not being used back then? They are used all of the time now. They can fit into the size of a suitcase and just be launched by throwing them into the air. Why didn't they have one?
Very informative video, giving much additional insight to the original video I saw. Absolutely heartbreaking what happened here, but we all know they fought bravely to the end - true warriors. Rest in peace to those fallen. God bless our American Allies. 🇺🇸
Yeah, surprising they don't say a word about the french Mirage jets, then the Puma helicopters filled with french special forces putting an end to that fiasco by driving the enemy forces out. Without that backup, even more casualties could have happened.
Surely because an other french bashing ...and perhaps for shame because the Us soldiers cant be saved by french force. According to a lot of morons french soldiers have white flag in there bag.
Hope this helps: This is only half of the video, the complete debrief is 22/23 minutes long in total. The French air support, Nigerien quick reaction force, and the personnel recovery event are covered in the unedited video. Also this video clip omits the explanation mission plan, and how it changed--major details, which given the results of said mission, are vital to understanding it. Definitely do a search and find the complete video. EDIT: I've done a search, and though not sure about posting links to other videos in comments, if you search "[New Details/Extended Version] The Niger Ambush" on YT, you should find the complete debrief.
Man... watch the live footage.. read the wiki. There's nothing brave about this. They were even stalled in that village for over an hour by their citizens to set up the trap. Why are we even fighting in places that clearly don't want our help?
I just watched the documentary on this finally, so sad what happened to La David. Imagine being alone, with only a small tree to hide under, with enemy surrounding you and no hope of escape. Credit to Wright for stopping and fighting to the death next to his wounded comrade, and it was his first overseas deployment.
He died because he was left behind by Nigerian Forces. He was with three others in a vehicle as part of the larger group who left behind Jeremiah, Bryan, and Dwight. The vehicle had left the initial ambush site and somehow they ended up engaging the enemies again. I'm assuming La David knew that some were left behind because, more specifically that part of his team, the guys he knew were still back there. So they stopped a little distance away to wait for their vehicle to show up (unbeknownst). La David and the Nigerian soldiers started shooting at the enemies coming from the initial attack (now moving past the three KIA) They did not know about the larger force with vehicles coming their way. La David was left because he was 10-20 feet away from the vehicle as he and the other Nigerian soldiers were shooting at the enemies, which came under fire and caused the driver and Nigerian soldiers in it to drive off for their own lives, leaving La David. The vehicle with the Nigerian Forces took off and left La David behind. After this I can imagine La David, in the heat of the moment thinking how they left him behind and this may be it for him. So he bolted for his life, ran 1/2 a mile towards where the other vehicles left.( Full on sprinting for about 5 minutes) Incredibly impressive. But came under fire from ISIS who shot at him with their AK-47's after hopping out of vehicles which closed in on him. So there he was in the middle of the desert, left behind, no cover, hot as hell, so he laid under a bush where he continued to shoot at them until he was over run.
That soldier is so dam loyal and is a hero for going back for his friend and fighting to the death with him.

They thought that the rest of the team was just up ahead (facing right to the vehicle) and that they could run and re unite to them and then escape. This is where they were wrong, because the other guys had sped off after maneuvering past the red smoke grenades. They ran for about 30-40 seconds before Jeremiah was struck and downed, and then Dwight.
I saw the real images of the battle, and very sad, the soldiers fought until the end, they tried to retreat but they were hit, and they were still shot, and very sad, RIP :,,(

idiotic protocol, they let their rear get slaughtered because they were too keen on getting the hell out of there. The enemy can quickly advance on separated forces. They should have at least ensured that all units were ready to move out before hightailing out. Definitely abandonment. Most of the deaths were from fleeing rather than holding.

I believe that the fog of war, uncertainty, and tunnel vision are something that the average Joe (or even guys with experience) can't fathom. These guys did quite well considering the circumstances. Only thing I couldn't get was why the 2 berets who were walking alongside the SUV didn't just jump in and take off.
A truck makes an easy target for RPG. Plus all the tires were shot. Flat Tires in sand = worthless
Looks like the driver got hit pretty quick after they started moving - can't imagine those vics had bulletproof glass.

@Ahmed Ali it was not 8 to 10 enemy
@Ahmed Ali It would've been literally impossible for 10 soldiers to pull this off, especially considering that at least 20 enemies died.
@Ahmed Ali first of all, this ambush happened in Africa, not Iraq. Second of all, those "girly faces" have some of the toughest combat training in the world and almost never take more losses than the enemy. Third of all, we know at least twenty enemies died because that's how many enemy corpses were found by the French and Nigerien reinforcements.

hello, I am a former French soldier, and I know this kind of terrain, for being there, these countries were part of our colonial empire, and it's been years that we fight there.
"our colonial empire" sounds many people, you are the cannon meat :D
A portable drone would of been a life saver. They would of got the fu#k out of there with quickness if they deployed a drone and saw everything they were up against. Were the portable drones not being used back then? They are used all of the time now. They can fit into the size of a suitcase and just be launched by throwing them into the air. Why didn't they have one?

Rip to the Nigerian men too💯🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬💪🏾💪🏾
@@segzkelly Yes RIP to them too.. They faught bravely and with exemplary courage too.
