For this reaction video I decided to take a spontaneous look at silly SLO's (sword-like objects) in an online store I randomly found when searching "fantasy swords". That's structural steel, that's ductile strength is so low, that it would be illegal to use it building construction in Europe or USA, because of the risk that the building will collapse.
440 steel can cost 10 times and more than that.
When it comes to blade steels, 440, especially 440c isn't that bad. Of course for knives - using stainless, even good quality SS, for a sword is a daft idea since they usually afe prone to breaking.
If you want to go cheap hou go for 420A. Thos is the steel that's used on 99% of cheap chinesee swords.
Cheap carbon steels, like NCV3, on the other hand, arn't thad bad, you could make a decent knofe from them

The Attack on Titan swords DO have disposable blades, which are replaced by using the lever to detach the old one, and then replacing the blade with a different one from the scabbard that has several. Anime is creatively weird.
Except the lever is more of a break mechanism to control their speed. The actual ejection part is located more by their thumb and acts like it would on a gun to eject used bullets....only in this case for used blades.
They are giant box-cutters , they even have the breakaway scores on them.
It’s bc if the sword gets stuck inside a titan you can detach it and nit get stuck in the titan and die

For those who didn't know: the engineer of our household says 440 stainless is a cheap metal that's easy to work with, and is commonly used for kitchen sinks.

its also known as the lowest quality of steel possible to make a knife. All of the lowest lowest end blades are 440, you dont get cheaper. It's highly brittle and so generally not advised for a blade longer than 6 inches..... cause itll shatter. immediately.

I love how your knowledge allows you to basically describe the exact thing that happens in Attack on Titan with when those blades are used. And it makes me happy that the animators realized that blades like that would break. Or maybe it was just aesthetic choice. I would like to believe they did research.
I believe its on purpose in the show, since the goal is a relatively shallow cut on the neck, they can keep the section they need to cut with sharp by breaking off the dulled tip. Idk for sure, never watched the show, just seen pics and have a friend that talks about it.
Basically, they need to cut a specific chunk out of the titans' necks to kill them and instead of making super durable blades but also sharpen them, they just make cheap ones and replace them all the time.
Not quite. The blades are made of a high quality yet rare metal known as "Ultrahard steel" that is necessary for slicing into titans, so it's illegal to use said metal to produce anything else. The blades are very sharp, but a titan's hide is very tough, so each use of the blade cause damage and dullness. The blades are designed to break off the dull parts like a box-cutter knife for maximum efficiency. The blades are also easily detachable from the hilt with the push of a button. This is why each sheath contains around 6 (4 in the anime) blades.
To contrast, standard broadswords were used in decades past, but were entirely useless against Titans.

They need to cut a specific part of the titan's neck to properly kill it. Any damage to any other part of their bodies is quickly regenerated. This would be a big waste of resources.

You understood the functionality of sword at 8:55 almost perfectly. Its sword from attack on titan. Blade is ment to be snapped when it gets dull as only way to kill titan is to cut off piece from neck so the instant you have dull blade you are doomed. Triggers shoot hooks so you can reach the neck.
I suppose that means it has good design as person without knowing anything about it undetstood it.
not just when it gets dull which is a factor to it but the main reason i think was so the blades actually stayed inside the titan to slow down their regeneration

To be fair, Weiss' sword isn't actually meant for up-close combat. It was meant as a ranged dust weapon that can also happen to cut if need be.
They have a sniper rifle scythe, they don't give a eff about logic (And I mean, they don't need to)

David Weber, John Ringo, David Drake, Elizabeth Moon, Jerry Pournelle, Robert Heinlein, Keith Laumer, Larry Niven, Linda Evans, C. J. Cherryh, Harry Turtledove, Eric Flint, Andre Norton, S.M. Stirling to name a few other greats. I lean toward military fiction, science fiction, fantasy...most of these authors have written mainly science fiction, but a few are quite prolific in fantasy as well...and of course the two are not so very far off from each other, often blending into one~♥

when your common daily product sold in your country a lot of it came from China, you'll recognize these kind of description immediately.
some probably make poetic sense in Chinese and some is google translated from English to Chinese, and here's the funny thing, they google translated it again for the website description. so the end result is not surprising.

@Skallagrim: The "Future Dragon Space Fantasy Sword" looks like the thing from some animated show called RWBY that my daughter watches... In the show it's "loaded" with elemental thingies (into the part that looks like a revolver) and it can then shoot those elemental thingies out like a magical attack... At least that's what I get from a show that I have no idea as to what is going on. lol
I watch RWBY, and if you want details, here you go:
The sword (well, rapier to be exact) is called Myrtenaster and it's the weapon used by Weiss Schnee (the girl in my profile pic at the time of this comment), one of the main characters. The revolver thing is for the rapier to be able to use Dust (pretty much minerals with magical properties) rounds, which either enchant the blade with the Dust round's specific element (Dust is of multiple elements, like fire, gravity, etc.) or enchant her Semblance (special abilities that are unique for every character, pretty much like the Quirks from My Hero Academia), which, in her case, are glyphs with a decent variety of effects (which is boosted by the fact that she combines it with Myrtlenaster's Dust rounds).
I'm a RWBY fan too, and I can say @@vynonyoutube1418 nailed it. That's Myrtenaster, but... Maybe it's having a sword's version of a "bad hair day"? Never tought that could be possible. Lol

There's one there marked "battle ready" at the end. O.O $44 for a "battle ready" sword. I think I'd feel safer using a length of rebar with one end bent round like a paperclip.
I should make a video of all the craftable weapons in LotRO. There are some really ODD designs in there. There's a spear that looks like a double corkscrew that's been run over, and one of the swords has a fatter tip with a hole through it, like they found a giant needle, hammered it flat and put a grip on the point. It's sort of bizarre. Some of them are proper swords, and some are ...
... kind of bizarre.

I own one of the 12min mark blades gifted to me several years back. It does surprisingly well in semi harsh cutting tests especially seeing as its 440 stainless painted red and black with a negligible edge when purchased.

practical if you do not want to worry about sharpening. impractical if you consider that in reality they would break off. it is still a great anime!

That future dragon space fantasy sword is Wiess' Myrtinaster from RWBY. The cylinder type guard is actually a revolving cylinder like a gun that has "dust" cartridges in it so she can perform magic with the sword.
The deadly alliance sword is of course the swords from the ODM gear in Attack on Titan. The handle bar brake type thing is actually to switch out the box cutter like blades when they have become to dull to cut through giant's spines and the two other guards are for operating the Omni Directional Maneuverability Gear that allows the fighters to swing in from buildings to hit the giant's necks.
The guys at Baltimore Knife and Sword made both of these swords for episodes of Man at Arms: Reforged.
The aot swords do actually break a bunch in the show, but they do cary extra blades that can be attatched to the handle
They're also not expected to cut super deep per attack (the target point is only like a metre, isn't it?) so the box cutter design probably also increases the number of titans you could successfully engage per blade.
