when i was about 8 i started collecting knives and swords, my parents thought it was just a phase. as the years went by i use to draw different designs of blades every time i had the chance, filling notebooks, on my clothes if i had no paper, any chance i had. i'm 20 now, starting two years ago i started making knives, since i didn't have money at the time i made my own tools and forge and sold my knives to keep getting more and better tools. I'm still new to the blacksmith trade, but i got far enough on my own to now sell knives from a shop that helps sell them for me at around $175-$200 each for my rustic style knives.
When I saw the picture of it I had to go back and re-listen to the part where he says "experienced swordsmith", just to make sure I heard right. That thing is absolutely horrendous, and about 1000 times uglier than the first blade I ever made. Sounds like somebody was exaggerating about their "experience" just a tiiiiiiiiny weee bit.
I've really gotten into historical accuracy and practicality in the last 7 years or so, but I'll always have a soft spot for fantasy double bladed gigantic axes.
When I was a kid, my friend's brother,( not much older than us, so maybe twelve or thirteen), was using a double hafted felling axe, but swung way too far back, and partially severed his spine . He was in a wheelchair for about ten years, then could walk again, but was permanently damaged. Awful story, but be careful with sharp edges.
I feel you on forgetting the teenage years! The only pictures from those days, are ones my parents have that I cannot destroy, lol. Oh, the joyous days of Nirvana and way too much flannel -_- I've been lucky on swords, no bad ones yet. I've been pretty careful/lucky so far. I have on that is just a SLO, but it was created specifically as an art piece, not meant to be used in any way (Mithrodin).
Miyamoto Musashi Flannel on its own isn't a bad thing, but in the 90's...it was the grunge style, and one I'd prefer no one ever saw me wearing, lol. Crappy ripped jeans, t-shirt, grungy open flannel short over. Flannel can be ok, but we abused the hell out of it in the 90's, lol.
when I was 18 I bought a dragon sword from budk......I paid $150 bucks......learned my lesson quickly. It looked cool.....as an art piece I guess. I even sharpened the thing. (wasted effort) Even trying to use it would involve personal injury. I can't even find it under google images.
Hey, man! It was a good confession! Thanks for that. Many of us were the same naive idiots, that were grown on “Conan the barbarian” movies and knew nothing about the steel parameters. Thanks to your videos like that I know what doesn’t worth of my money, which shops and producers are fine, and which blades the one should avoid, which prices are reasonable, which stuff is to cheap to be good, and which weapons are “cheap but good” and worth to be bought by novices like me. It is good to know that skilled guys like you were complete noobs as well, and made some silly mistakes. So, once again, thanks for your videos, and especially for this one!
But isn't a bad katana still better than any other sword? I mean, it's the divine geometry of the blade that matters, not the material from which it is forged.
Katanas are always superior. And besides being a superior weapon it could do your taxes, drive your kids to school, used as a night light and will monitor your carb intake. Superior in every way

Skallagrim, what makes a collectable a "waste of money?" Aren't weapons inherently a waste of money because you're not going into actual medieval combat? I'm not trolling, i'm just curious what you see as "not a waste" and why/what makes a weapon specifically a waste?
If it's useless for the intended purpose, it's a waste. In this case this could be: - Unsafe or otherwise unsuitable for historical martial arts practice - Poorly designed for test cutting - Not enjoyable as a collector's piece (ugly, uncomfortable in the hand, etc).
Skallagrim Ah, okay, I understand why you got rid of them. I would have kept the massive axe -- I'd never use it for practice or test cutting, so for me, it's pure aesthetics -- but I see why you didn't.

when i was about 8 i started collecting knives and swords, my parents thought it was just a phase. as the years went by i use to draw different designs of blades every time i had the chance, filling notebooks, on my clothes if i had no paper, any chance i had. i'm 20 now, starting two years ago i started making knives, since i didn't have money at the time i made my own tools and forge and sold my knives to keep getting more and better tools. I'm still new to the blacksmith trade, but i got far enough on my own to now sell knives from a shop that helps sell them for me at around $175-$200 each for my rustic style knives.
That comissioned viking sword... If I made that I wouldn't dare charge money for it...
What if the person specifically asked "Hey, can you make me a vaguely sword shaped steel bar with a handle?"?
Same, that thing is awfull.
I think not even a novice would craft a garbage like that. That Smith is probably self taught or something.
Technocracy XXI Nothing wrong with being self taught, a lot of smiths are. That "sword" was made by someone with no idea of what his doing...
I'll give you ten bucks for the Viking sword.
oh would u look at that, UA-cam did secretly unsub u for me. ffs YT.
Yes, it happens all the time. Meanwhile they're trying to tell us it doesn't. -_-
Yup, resubbed, and clicked the dingle ling button as well
Hopefully that will spare you further UA-cam shenanigans.
"dingle ling button"
I've really gotten into historical accuracy and practicality in the last 7 years or so, but I'll always have a soft spot for fantasy double bladed gigantic axes.
Don't deny Manowar, Skall! You know you love them! ;-)
Warriors of the world!
Secret of Steel
How much do I need to pay to see your teenager pictures? xD
More than you can afford. :)
I'll trade you two leftover slices of pizza and my swiss army knife.
Skallagrim I have six dollars and a bag full of fecal matter!
I have a $15000 pommel you might want to consider.
Skallagrim i have diabetes
I bought that viking seord in 2004. Pulled out of the box, pommel fell off. Guard rattled. Weighed4.5 lbs. deepeeka. Returned.
Looks at the axe... "You can throw your back out with that thing." *blush* Yeah. That happened. You aren't the only idiot out there ;)
The fuck
Till the blood on your sword is the blood of a king, blood of a king,BLOOD OF A KING!- Manawar.
6:29 That Manowar poster.
Hell yeah!
Hello heavy tf2
Now I really want to see a teenage Skall.
That Jon Snow pun was so bad xD
Jonathan Midtgaard Jensen Didn't have enough pommels in it to end rightly.
Oh, the joyous days of Nirvana and way too much flannel -_-
I've been lucky on swords, no bad ones yet. I've been pretty careful/lucky so far. I have on that is just a SLO, but it was created specifically as an art piece, not meant to be used in any way (Mithrodin).
Nefrai Laysh What's wrong with Flannel? It's warm and comfortable.
Did he just start the video with "Hey, fucks"?
*Folks*.
I am Nobody *Hey Folks
hey forks
I am Nobody *hey forks :p
He should always start his videos with "Hi fucks" lmao
as an edgy teen i look back at yesterday and cringe
Yesterday, all my troubles seem so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay...
"I knew just as much as John Snow - which is nothing"
*Clicks subscribe*
Good thing you mentioned subscribing. I didn't even notice I wasn't subscrived
Cody Overton I will subscrive to you
"Order of 'suckage'... " We can add that to Skallagrim's meme of "ending him rightly with a pommel"
*As we greaten the radius of our understanding we increase the circumference of our misunderstanding*
The Jon Snow joke forced me to slam the like button a little too hard.
Wouldn't say I'm a sword or historical weapons enthusiast but these videos are always cool and entertaining. Keep up the good work dude. Subscribed :)
ever bought something that looked so dumb and impractical you wanted it
TRIGGERED I WILL NEVER SLEEP AGAIN
HOW WOULD ONE USE PROPER BLADE ALIGNMENT
THAT BLACKSMITH MUST BE ENDED RIGHTLY
I agree
Let's get Skallagrim to 1 million subscribers so he will show us his teenage pictures.
That viking sword is hilarious
"first battle ready sword" in front of posters for Manowar and The Crow
my man
But isn't a bad katana still better than any other sword? I mean, it's the divine geometry of the blade that matters, not the material from which it is forged.
StutleyConstable you have won the internet sir have this W
StutleyConstable material matters
Yeah, material matters. Unless it's a KATANA!
StutleyConstable Exactly. With the geometry and sharpness, there simply wouldn't be enough resistance to break it!
Katanas are always superior. And besides being a superior weapon it could do your taxes, drive your kids to school, used as a night light and will monitor your carb intake. Superior in every way
crap I'm glad you reminded me to sub again jeez I haven't seen a vid in ages
Yep, the subscription system is seriously broken right now. Well, at least there is lots of videos to watch now. :)
very true, will last me a few hours anyway xD
I have now a lot to watch too, and 3 exams tomorrow, but(t) fu*k it
Dávid Kertész I would suggest exams
I can’t believe I’m only finding your videos now going through them thank you!
can you please add freaking ads so you can make some money
This video *is* monetized. Got Adblock on?
So, if someone has Adblock, does that mean you don't get paid? Just wondering. Thanks.
Yes.
I dont think anyone would have anything against sponsored videos. Having ads in the videos makes it easier for people like me to support you.
Skallagrim I don't have ad block and never get ads somehow 🤔
Uh. Manowar AND Black Metal on your walls. I approve!
That's not Black Metal, it's a poster of The Crow and one of Spawn.
Holy shit,The Crow and Spawn are awesome!
What are those posters you have now?
I thought The Crow was a decent movie. I liked that the protagonist with his new found powers acted bad-ass but in actuality he was kind of a dork, ha. It helped humanize him.
I LOVE the first 40s of this clip. Rants always tickle me and Skall's mini-rants are hilarious. Now, to the rest of the video!
I burst out of laughing when I saw the viking sword, sorry :D
I wonder if the blacksmith tried swinging his own sword or if he just decided it looked good enough
Nice. Eloquent. Enjoyable in the pure honesty of the thing. Thanks mate
i thought you just rarely posted.. just re-subscribed.
I upload every other day, it was just UA-cam being ridiculous.
Same happened to me. Just subscribed again because I stumbled over this video. UA-cam really increases to annoy me, especially this algorithm pretending to know what I want to see....yeah thank you but no thank you. :D
Oh what the hell I just noticed that I was unsubscribed too.
same here
same here re subbed
Now I wanna design a double headed axe and name it "Full Retardation".
Much love and respect Skalla, thanks for always providing helpful and thorough content.
I sell pommels and pommel accessories
That blade ain't right...
your name...just... i upvote...i can't stop laughing
what a uniquely specific market to corner.
can I end any of my opponents rightly with your pommels?
It's euphoria
"I knew as much as Jon Snow... Which is nothing." Like EARNED. xD
Skall shows an axe
Skall: "this is way too heavy..."
MichaelCthulu: "hold my respirator"
Weird I was unsubscribed even though the video showed up in my subscribtion feed.
UA-cam is just Bizarro Land right now.
Jedrasification How dare you not be subscribed to Skallagrim? You call yourself a Chaos Warrior?
What i meant is that youtube got me unsubscribed, and the video still showed up in my subscribtion feed.
you are lucky i was unsubscribed and the only reason i noticed it is because i came too see one of his holder video.
I also had this problem, not with skall's channenl though. The worst thing is that youtube just denies the problem.
my favorite sword is the gladius
Forget Manowar - Yay for the Crow poster!
Bro, i'm on mobile, and I have never been unsubscribed.
Wiped Ceiling same
Is.... is that a "The Crow" poster...?
Dread, the Mad Smith Yep
Dread, the Mad Smith as if you had to ask
I really like the tone of this one. One of my favorite vids
Skall should order a homemade buster sword from MichaelCthulu! Hahahaha
In this case this could be:
- Unsafe or otherwise unsuitable for historical martial arts practice
- Poorly designed for test cutting
- Not enjoyable as a collector's piece (ugly, uncomfortable in the hand, etc).
Skallagrim Thanks for the info, was genuinely curious 😁
Skallagrim Ah, okay, I understand why you got rid of them. I would have kept the massive axe -- I'd never use it for practice or test cutting, so for me, it's pure aesthetics -- but I see why you didn't.
the axe would look awesome in a video game or at the wall but useless for everything else (accept you wanna kill somebody "accidently" in Training)
That "Viking" sword looks like it was made from tin foil. Lordy lol
i just make new weapons after i break my cheap ones XD the McGuyver skills run deep in my family.
I really dig that axe but i also learned how to use heavy weapons from Nightmare on Soul Calibur III not practical but fun as all hell when you got stacks of pumpkins or the like
And Manowar was pretty cool back then ;-)
0:27 i wish more youtubers thought that, thank you skalagrim, big respect
I had a few laughable wall hangers as gifts from people that know I like these things, then one of my old uncles, heavens have him, gave me an awesome hand made knife with a bone handle. His neighbor made it for him, literally! 😂 I had no idea he had blacksmithing neighbors!
11:09 I legit burst out laughing when I saw the sword.
I do not yet know why but, at 3:10, your tone gave a very credible aura to what you were saying about it being (or, in this case, NOT being) a self-defense weapon.
Nice.
Fighting the World and Kings of Metal are both good.
