King Krule: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 гру 2017
- Dec. 6, 2017 | Bob Boilen -- The Ooz, the title to King Krule's latest album, is the perfect name for his music. It conjures, in my mind, a word mashup of "cool" and "jazz." The music is eerily evocative with lyrics that talk about the sorts of depression singer and guitarist Archy Marshall has dealt with in his young life. And, at 23, he has a lot to say on the subject. His opening song at the Tiny Desk, "Midnight 01 (Deep Sea Diver)," includes the line, "Why'd you leave me? Because of my depression? / You used to complete me but I guess I learnt a lesson." The song continues with water-sinking metaphors and how he deals with the pressure. All this comes from someone who honestly looks like he couldn't care less, which seems like a far cry from the words and care he puts into his twisted, woozy tones.
Those tones are played here by five other musicians, including sax, guitars, bass, drums, live vocal processing of Archy's voice and electronics. It's a winning path down a musical road rarely traveled - and an acquired taste well worth dipping in.

His drummer is absolutely insane
i heard him play one note and thought that
don't ignore the bassist, he adds extra juice
hes gone bonkers
@@jsheav3n You heard him play a note? When? How?
Thats funny i was thinking the same , absolutely bonkers
King Krule as cheerful as ever
Cheerful is as cheerful does, unwise one.
My favorite cheerful music from Korea
@@j.c7719 bro it’s a joke
Dope comment bro
every song on the OOZ sounds dramatically better live
Especially Deep Sea Diver. In my opinion the studio version is pretty lackluster to this one.
nah
nothing at all lackluster about that song
so grunty! best show i've been to hands down
I feel like on the album he was trying to create a mood, so he can make the songs more listenable live (maybe it’s just me though)
This dude can full out spit bars and rap then goes and plays the most chilled out jazz not to mention he always plays and loves Punk , dudes like the best of everything
Yeah it’s insane, he like fuses punk, grunge and jazz together. Band is excellent and so is the song writing.
Drummer's a beast on those ghost notes
Clement Kee what are ghost notes
Search for his other band, "Horsey Live"
Yeah, dude's percussion game is on-point.
Rob Ekbery lots of bounce and a little practice
First you're born, then you're named Geoffrey Haddock.
At 3:34 the drummer puts his stick under his arm to adjust his snare and then just comes right back in and doesn't miss a beat. That is talent. Also shoutout to the bass player. That guy deserves some love. He kept it all together and never lost the beat. Such an amazing performance
Well spotted. Very admirable
Saw them live. They are so incredible. I got a pic with archy and everything these guys are insane
He was flipping the switch to turn the snares off.

That drummer is extremely talented...some jazz beats like that are extremely hard to keep in time.
I watch this instead of going to therapy
Way more effective
Me too, I swear I’m here everyday
saves money. more effective :)
@Dominic Christiansen this is therapy
If possible and needed, better both.
Get him back for Man Alive!
Pleaaase npr!
Honestly i didn't find man alive as good as the ooz
ggthewhale really? Cause I’m my
Opinion man alive is a lot easier to listen to live and studio then then ooz
I will die happy in case
@@ggthewhale well check again, it traps your soul after third time
This guy appreciates all forms of music. My hats off to him and his band.
Niles Hemming you can hear it in his music. It’s great
this is a gr8 comment
Anthony Fantano has no idea what he is talking about. Archy is beautiful
Why does his opinion even matter? He's not even a musician, just a reviewer he doesn't understand beyond what he listens because of that reason.
@Ethan Neufeld A bad one for that matter
@@nathanhernandez1344 he is a musician he plays a few insturments
Boutta say i love the melon and archy
@@iangilbert6518hes a solid bassist
You know what’s so funny ? I feel like this jazzy-souls drenched R&B infused alternate stuff is the new wave sorta like how Grunge was in the 90s. Another thing I notice was that a lot of these young cats are trained in jazz
i don’t really get the grunge comparison but it’s definitely a scene or a movement that i’m honestly buzzing to be a part of and will look back on in the future
yes
Agreed but idk if there's much of an identity or "entity" to establish this genre as a new movement like grunge was in the 90s. The only "new wave" movement that's really happening right now is the "Soundcloud" mumble/emo rap movement
This is to jazz what grunge is to rock
Elise Ghitman Jerkcurb, Puma Blue, Matt Maltese, Nifuler Yanya, Big Piig, Lucy Lu, Matilda Mann, Crumb, Mild High Club, Connan Mockasin, theres more just the few that came to mind
he put a lot of sentiment in his songs for a guy without a soul
James Tree how dare you. He’s one of the most soulful mf’ers out here.
+Jai the Conqueror It's a ginger joke
explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog - you might understand it better, but you kill it in the process.

Wow he has some great musicians playing with him. I half expected Mac demarco style “I just play with my friends” but these guys are legitimately great musicians
They are also very good friends of his. Fantastic musicians as well, no doubt.
Jadyn Klassen agreed. Have a good day friend!
David Rivera dunno about the guy on sax, but i think he went to school with all the rest of them
Com Lag yeah you’re right. Guy on sax is from America.
What are you talking about? Jon Lent is the greatest bass player in the world
tiny desk should invite Crumb... this was super groovy btw

gotta say i like the live on the moon performance a little more but i get it

Their music makes me cry. I don't understand.. im not sad. I just feel immense joy from the sounds they produce that it utterly renders me helpless
everytime i listen to king krule i lose all ability
Understandable
Thanks for sharing about crying
This is literally one of the most beautiful sounding things I've heard
Aman
They're all in total sync. Mesmerizing performance. The subtly of Connor's delay textures are really adding to the atmosphere of this performance. I wish we could have seen Emergency Blimp in this office space, and/or La Lune. Hopefully next time. Incredible to watch. Thank you, King Krule and NPR.
Any idea what device hes using for the delay textures?
you're so right, would've loved to hear those 2 songs performed in this set while they were in this groove. I actually like the renditions of all 4 songs performed here better than the album version
now if only he learned how to sing well and play the guitar
Finally someone who speaks my language. Those delay textures are everything
@@peajay2206 looks to me like a korg kaoss pad
Saw this guy on acid and it was amazing. Allowed me to appreciate him much much more than i ever would have. His whole performance was essentially a curation of punk, jazz, rnb, and rock influences stirred into one beautiful reverb-laden emotive soup. The visuals were just as haunting and moody. I will never ever forget that show.
100nujabes id love to trip at one of his concerts damn, too bad he wont be touring for a while he just had a kiddo
lil slav boi just released tour dates today lol
I don't think I could make it through one of his shows on acid. I'm already so sad as it is
I'd love to see him live whenever he gets to the US
@@livetoskate111 oh well. Shame about those :p
Archie's intelligence just dropped my jaw down. There's a Lermontov's poem on the back of "Midnight 01". Such an elegant obeisance to Russian culture. Cheers.
What's the poem called?
@@morallita I'm assuming the English name would be The Sail
How does that make someone intelligent
@@kathiavargas4174 I probably picked the wrong word. I was referring to his impressive outlook and the way he uses it in music.
If they gave out awards for pretentious commentary bs, this would certainly be nominated!
The mixing on this performance is stellar compared to some other live performances from archy recently. Props to the people at tiny desk.
his live show hinges upon a really good mix, there's a lot of subtleties that are so well captured on this recording
first
that also might be in part due to the fact that this is also one of the only tiny desks with a DJ, and some of that might be due to him too
The drummer, as always, the best person in king krule. Give him credit where credit is due.

George Bass!!
Eric Conley it looks shit and nowhere as easy as a mark colenburg a questlove or chris dave(totally different category) but his playing on this was more than just "good"

Midnight 01 is my favorite from the album, glad they performed it.
That drummer is so talented. Feel like that needs to be said with the way he just feels the vibe.
some say if you throw the drummer on a deserted island, even after 10 years he would still tell you date and time accurate to the second

Been watching this video for 5 years. Will never forget how I felt when I first listened
Same 😢
whenever I say king krule I gotta growl the name in a deep jazz voice like kiiiiing kruuule
This amazing moment at 2:16 when murmurs in russian starts Michael Lermontov's poetry:
Белеет парус одинокой
В тумане моря голубом!..
Что ищет он в стране далекой?
Что кинул он в краю родном?...
Играют волны - ветер свищет,
И мачта гнется и скрыпит…
Увы! он счастия не ищет
И не от счастия бежит!
Под ним струя светлей лазури,
Над ним луч солнца золотой…
А он, мятежный, просит бури,
Как будто в бурях есть покой!
//
The sail is whitening alone
In the blue sea fog!..
What is he looking for in a distant land?
What did he leave in his native land?...
Waves play - the wind whistles,
And the mast bends and creaks…
Alas! he is not looking for happiness
And not from happiness is fleeing!
Beneath it a jet of lighter blue,
Above it is a Golden sunbeam…
And he, the rebel, asks for a storm,
As if there is peace in the storms!
Yooo that’s one of my favorite parts of the song. That poem is a beaut
It’s really lovely paired with this brilliant live performance! (Greetings from the future man;))
Wow I've watched this like hundreds of times and never really picked up on it! I was too mesmerized by the drums and sax!
блин, я даже не заметил этого!!
Old souls in young dudes...
This new minimalism is so good!
this is so raw. Lonely blue was insane
Agreed
Theres nothing quite like King Krule and his boys. To find jazzy, though provoking, head bopping music like this is so so so refreshing.
Just the tonal & key changes are so much fun to follow like in traditional jazz but with a new soul poured into it, especially hearing it live. UGH SO GOOD.
If any one could recommend other artist like him i'd appreciate it!

This is one of the greatest tiny desk's ever. This live performance destroys the studio version, I wasn't much of a fan of the record until I heard these live versions. Can't wait to see what Krule comes up with.
Incredible live performance. Someone really dropped the ball by green lighting the studio versions, this is 100 times better.
The one with eddie palmieri was phenomenal also

This is the best tiny desk. That rendition of midnight 01 (deep sea diver) is absolutely glorious. The band perform together as one, so tight and lost in the pocket, yet so present in the moment.
They are so tight live like everyone is just perfectly in sync, especially the drummer
listening to this first, then the album, then several live versions, then back to this, my mind is oozed
I honestly think this is the most beautiful thing I’ve heard!
I got so excited when I saw this in my sub box. This guy is so weird and so talented. I love him.
