I saw this in L.A. This song was the point of no return. The show left my friends and I speechless for many hours afterwards. After all these decades, from Pink Floyd to Rage against the machine and everything in between, it remains the most amazing performance Ive ever seen. Brings me to tears watching this
Saw Peter in 1982 at tower theater out side of Philadelphia. We were 4th row right center His shows were more raw back then. He looked right at my friend and me and pointed while singing. We were maybe 10 ft away. I’m 69 and remember it like it was yesterday. Great to share it with everyone who understands. Last time I saw gabs was 2 days before Woodstock.
The "So" album concert was the second time I saw PG live, the first one was when he was performing with an assortment of other artists for the Amnesty International tour "A Conspiracy of Hope" that same year in LA. But the "So" concert was the one that really overwhelmed me. The sound, the lighting, the on-stage performance was truly a rock opera which at times could be dramatic and uplifting. When he did the backwards dive into the audience I felt mesmerized, I truly could not believe what I was seeing and it was something I had never seen before. The spectacle really made me feel like I was being hypnotized in an almost religious experience. I just feel very lucky that I was able to see him perform live during my lifetime.
And there you have it folks that’s Peter Gabriel inventing crowd surfing. I love how tired he looked before he went down there, and how he really just enjoyed all of the moments. When he bounced back up on stage re-energized… This man is a global treasure ! We must protect him at all costs
One of the most incredible concerts I have ever witnessed, and this song in particular sent chills down my spine as I had never witnessed anyone offering themselves up to an audience in this way. Amazing.
it's incredible... after the trust-fall, he's being passed around and he's still making eye contact and connecting with people. a one-in-a-generation performer. I dunno... maybe one in a lifetime.
One of the greatest experiences that i ever had in my life, i was there and after so many years it's still the best concert i've ever been to. Peter Gabriel at the peak of his powers with a band that leaves you with the mouth open even if you watch it from a small screen. Magic night, unique experience, great music from a master of his art.
Same. I saw his show in Ssn Francisco. It was so worth it in every way. It was the first time I saw him as I had seen Genesis just after Hackett left and often wondered what was the band like with Gabriel? So I took my brother who got me hooked on Genesis to see him and what an experience. I couldn’t believe he fell into the audience and they returned him after going around. He managed to keep his white jacket on without it being torn off him like in this video though. I was amazed. The performance was memorable. I could only imagine what he was like with Genesis. Peter Gabriel is amazing.
This incredible composition, this incredible band and this absolutely unbelievable performer leaves me speechless every time. How he is determent to go all the way. Taking real risks (because life is real). Leaving all boundaries behind. Exepting and expecting every consequence. Saw him three times, hope for more.
I was at a concert where he wore the cordless microphone and let the audience pass him around back when they had general admission on the floor and I always was on the floor for any concert but got to pass him around like he did at the end of this song but he was singing as well and I wouldn't let him go and he said to me,dude you have to let go and pass me along it was so cool just didn't want to let go of my favorite solo performer. 😎
I saw this tour in 1986. I knew no Peter Gabriel except the So songs I'd heard on the radio which I thought were okay but I didn't love them or anything. The show had been sold out for weeks, and then on the radio they said they'd released 500 more tickets. I had a gut feeling I should go. He opened with San Jacinto, and by the end of the first song, I was HOOKED. By the end of the show, I was a Peter Gabriel fuck up for life!
Saw him in Chicago in December 1986! Was that the one? My first concert, and I remember nothing of the actual show unfortunately, so wasn’t sure if he did crowd surfing. Would make me feel good to know that I saw that even if I don’t remember! 😊
I was at that show in Chicago in 1987 also! I was in the back up high and I had heard about him doing the crowd surf for a few years, but back before phone cameras and the internet I had never seen it. It was totally cool to see it in person and be there!
I saw Peter Gabriel (Pete as I called him, he called me Rob, haha no big deal) back in 1978. Man he was living! He was a masterclass performer that weaved his performance into his songs! Oh if i could go back
This is the track that got me into Peter's music, it was so intense it literally took my breath away. Even now after hundreds of listens, this track is still freaking intense as hell. To this day 'Lay Your Hands on Me' is my favourite Peter Gabriel song and PG4 is my favourite record.
All the albums have a class of their own, one of my favourites is moribund the Bergermeister but love lay your hands on me and here comes the flood. Happy listening.
I was at this show in California I had my peter makeup and I got to touch his shoe! When he fell into US! Very emotional for me I Love You Peter , and yes this is my avatar I’m obviously a little obsessed with his music ask anyone that knows me !
cool Julie, I seen this show at Montral Forum, it was like a spiritual experience, very rare an artist is born into our world with such great love as Peter .
I've only seen Peter Gabriel live once, back in 1983. This song was still new then, but when the time came and he stood near the edge of the stage, the audience in front instinctively understood exactly what he was going to do. He fell backwards, they caught him, passed him around and then handed him back to the stage after a few minutes. Really an incredible thing to see.
Now days its more like.... "You're contagious (Get your hands off me). You are sneezing (Get your hands off me). Please don't hug me (Get your hands off me). You're amazing. Your voice is like heaven and your stage performance is always exhilarating. Your music guides me. Bad day? Time to put on some Peter Gabriel and let it all melt away. Thank you for being awesome.

There is no one who writes like Peter Gabriel. While his output of material is small compared to other artists, I don’t think there is another Artist who puts as much emotion into his music. Powerful Video of one of my favourite songs. I have seen his band 3 times and I swear if I closed my eyes at any of those concerts I could swear I was sitting in my living room listening..
I saw this tour in Pittsburgh, PA. This many years later, it is still vivid in my memory and a true "moment" of my life. Incredible performer and show all around. As close to religious fervor as I've ever come. Thank you, Peter Gabriel and the fantastic musicians involved in your art who have given so much sound to my life!
Yes, at the Stanley Theater. At our concert Peter walked into the front seat area and stood on the back of a seat. The audience was a sea of hands reaching up to him. We didn't have any of that grabbing of clothes bullshit. Peter gives his audience a role to play; it's magical.
One of the first concerts i ever saw was the Peter Gabriel tour in 1987. It was this song that is forever burned in my brain as one of the greatest things ive ever seen live. But we Pete fans love it.
Peter Gabriel. What a beautiful song, you voice is feautiful, you interpretation is wonderful. You are Genesis, you are the creation of the best in music. Congratulations, success.
Peter Gabriel and this band played The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California on this tour. He opened with Shake Hands, performed this song like this, finished with Biko. I remember being so moved, like the entire audience must have felt. One of the best shows ever (and I've seen many great shows) in an amazing outdoor arena that felt so intimate.
Did the PG boost a couple times over the years. When I rushed the stage in Dallas, people in the audience had NO CLUE what was going to happen... Most intense concert experience ever...
Quote from PG: "Well, there goes another jacket!" But seriously, I'm amazed by PG's performing and bravery all rolled into one here. Have seen this video before, but never with this stunningly perfect video quality.
I saw Gabriel in 1977 to promote his first solo album at Winterland in SF. He sang Solsbuty Hill walking up and down the aisles. He was a master showman, blending his music with visuals.
I saw him do this song in an amphitheater. He walked towards the back on the tops of the seats. He came between me and my friend Paul. Placed his his hands on our shoulders for balance. I placed my hand on his back so he wouldn’t fall backward. Paul did the same. Totally cool.

From the very beginning, I have liked PG's music. But when I was in one of his concerts in a small town in Germany in the 80ths, this song - and, in fact, also the crowdsurfing that can be seen in this video - has deeply impressed me. It has been a great exprience that also influenced me, to visit the other concerts like in this month in Hamburg. This video brings me back to the former concert, back to a great time and back to legendary perfomer. Also my son (30) shares my enthusiasm and was with me at the concert. But just mentioning the impessive effect of this song is just half of the truth. Acutally, there are many more that I am proud to listen to PGs music. His songs are a great contribution to the world and my life. E. g. Biko is not just a song, it is a hymne that electrifys the audience, it casts a spell and let the audience become one. Now the songs are very different to others of the past, but great in the same way and I hope, we will get much more of this music. You are part of my youth and of my son's childhood, and for sure, you will also be part of our future. Thank you, Peter, for your music and your constant efforts to make the world a little better!
One of the greatest concerts I ever attended was in Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens. It was 1982, the year of the Security Tour in which this song features prominently. I still feel that Gabriel 3 & 4 are his greatest achievements outside of his Genesis years. Good health to everyone in 2024!!

I've been so blessed to have seen Peter on 3 different tours for 3 different albums. I believe the first time I saw him do this was at Roseland Ballroom in NYC on either his '84 or '86 tour. To say flabbergasted would be a gross understatement.
Happy New Year and a big hug from Mexico. I hope that all your desires and goals will be fulfilled and that you have a lot of health and joy just like your family. Thank you for your videos and feedback.
He did this when I saw him at the Hammersmith Odeon. I got to hold is ankle! So wish he would do some more gigs. His crowd surfing days may be over but he is an amazing performer. Maybe after all this Covid stuff is over he’ll play again?

But just mentioning the impessive effect of this song is just half of the truth. Acutally, there are many more that I am proud to listen to PGs music. His songs are a great contribution to the world and my life. E. g. Biko is not just a song, it is a hymne that electrifys the audience, it casts a spell and let the audience become one. Now the songs are very different to others of the past, but great in the same way and I hope, we will get much more of this music.
You are part of my youth and of my son's childhood, and for sure, you will also be part of our future.
Thank you, Peter, for your music and your constant efforts to make the world a little better!
Blue-eyed soul voice...❤️
that would be Todd Rundgren, or Daryl Hall.
Merci...
Miss you Peter!

I love you Peter ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Peter developed a deep understanding of the power of myth and story for living and interpreting experience, and this resonated with his fans.
I am waiting since many years a new real album from him.
Peter, we need your music...
He did this when I saw him at the Hammersmith Odeon. I got to hold is ankle!
So wish he would do some more gigs. His crowd surfing days may be over but he is an amazing performer. Maybe after all this Covid stuff is over he’ll play again?
😃👍
I absolutely love this performance.
Starker Mann.
Vielen Herzlichen Dank. 💞
Beautiful Peter!
Merci beaucoup. Love it!
He feels and lives the music. Not just play it.
