the idea that a man can have empathy for a culture, race, struggle, their courage, and skulpt a work of art that captures a spirit so clearly, is masterful at an extremely high "spiritual level". So thankful that there are human beings that actually pierce the veil of what a money driven industry feeds and is able to reach the masses in true form through all the worthless crap they swim and are covered in. I had a very spiritual experience on a mountain in Arizona, overlookingthe dessert. This song came to me loud, but there was no device anywhere around playing it.
I saw Peter Gabriel in 1993 and again in 2012. Indeed he has a presence. Very spiritual! My brother saw him in 1982 and said he thought he was Jesus. I kind of blew him off thinking he was on mushrooms. Now I’ve heard of so many with these experiences when seeing him, myself included. He has been a major part of my life from 1982 until now. I’m so moved by his music. I have sung his lyrics while working and let me tell you, people look at me very strange. Too bad. I get joy from him!
Peter Gabriel is really special! Since he began in Genesis I noticed something different about him! I think his fellows didn't quite understand him! He's amazing!
Gabriel was inspired. Having spent some time in the American Southwest, this song holds special meaning to me. Its haunting melody invokes an intense image of the high Jemez mountains of New Mexico. From there I used to gaze across the mesa toward the Parajito, (or Little Bird) plateau. When I close my eyes and listen to this mystical piece of music, I can still smell the pinion trees and the pine scented canyons and bluffs which were once the Holy Lands of Anasazi tribes. As I listen, I can almost see them, the medicine men performing their ancient rituals beneath the surrealistic skies of the Sangre de Christos.
There is no musical artist like Peter Gabriel. His lyrics, his unmistakable voice, the way he interacts on stage. I'm glad I saw him in concert in 1985 (!) and would look forward to seeing him again.

Amazing track! Probably the most fascinating of ''Peter Gabriel IV'' with the synth sequence introduction repeated throughout. Regrettably, this masterpiece is not included in the CD version. For the anecdote, I lived in Rome in 1993. Peter was to perform at Palasport Roma. I had my ticket, but a son of b....stole my car just two hours before. I never got my car back, but I did not care. "Taste it in my mouth and in my heart" "-- refers to venim. The indigenous people's of San Jacinto Mountains (the Apache, I think) had a rite of passage for young men, about 14 years old. @@JaredJonesAZ You may want to listen to Peter Gabriel himself talk about the song instead of relying on internet bullshit. The lyrics was partially INSPIRED by (meaning NOT literal) a story relayed to him by an Apache man from Arizona who was then working as a bellboy at a Minneapolis hotel where Peter was staying. Peter never claimed that San Jacinto was the name of the mountain where the man had the rite performed. The lyrics to the song reflect the struggle between indigenous identity and modern white culture which he witnessed while visiting the Riverside area in southern California in the 1970s. The song is just that- a song. It’s not a documentary.

I think anyone giving a thumbs down should be forced to publish their name. Who are these people?!? This is such an amazingly powerful song. However, my favourite way to experience it is still the studio recording, in the dark with my eyes closed. I think it's one of those songs where you make up your own imagery. It always has the hairs standing up on my arms. It's also a bit of a reflective calmdown after The Rhythm Of The Heat.
Thick cloud, steam rising Hissing stone on sweat lodge fire Around me, buffalo roam Sage in bundle, rub on skin Outside, cold air Stand, wait for rising sun Red paint, eagle feathers Coyote calling, it has begun Something moving in I taste it in my mouth and in my heart It feels like dying, slow Letting go of life [Peter Gabriel & Jill Gabriel:] (Hyena wakan tanka) (Hyena wakan tanka) (Hyena wakan tanka) (Hyena wakan tanka) (Hyena wakan tanka) (Hyena wakan tanka) [Peter Gabriel:] Medicine man lead me up through town Indian ground, so far down Cut up land, each house a pool Kids wearing water wings, drink in cool Follow dry river bed Watch Scouts and Guides make pow-wow signs Past Geronimo's disco Sitting Bull steakhouse, white men dream A rattle in the old man's sack, see Look at mountain top, keep climbing up Way above us the desert snow White wind blow I hold the line, the line of strength that pulls me through the fear San Jacinto, I hold the line San Jacinto, the poison bite and darkness take my sight I hold the line And the tears roll down my swollen cheek Think I'm losing it, getting weaker I hold the line, I hold the line San Jacinto, yellow eagle flies down from the sun, from the sun We will walk on the land We will breathe of the air We will drink from the stream We will live, hold the line Hold the line, hold the line We will live, hold the line Hold the line, hold the line
It feels like dying, letting go of life- Cut up land, each house, a pool- Poison bite and darkness take my sight- I hold the line- The line of strength that pulls me through the fear.
Tony Banks, the most prolific pianist-keyboardist and composer of Genesis himself said in an interview that the title of "San Jacinto" (Secret World) by Peter Gabriel was "the title that had most impressed him in the repertoire of his friend Peter ". I will add: "by its penetration into another world and its strange atmosphere out of space-time-matter in search of Light". Now, Peter Gabriel is finishing his new album.

Thick cloud, steam rising
Hissing stone on sweat lodge fire
Around me, buffalo roam
Sage in bundle, rub on skin
Outside, cold air
Stand, wait for rising sun
Red paint, eagle feathers
Coyote calling, it has begun
Something moving in
I taste it in my mouth and in my heart
It feels like dying, slow
Letting go of life
[Peter Gabriel & Jill Gabriel:]
(Hyena wakan tanka)
(Hyena wakan tanka)
(Hyena wakan tanka)
(Hyena wakan tanka)
(Hyena wakan tanka)

[Peter Gabriel:]
Medicine man lead me up through town
Indian ground, so far down
Cut up land, each house a pool
Kids wearing water wings, drink in cool
Follow dry river bed
Watch Scouts and Guides make pow-wow signs
Past Geronimo's disco
Sitting Bull steakhouse, white men dream
A rattle in the old man's sack, see
Look at mountain top, keep climbing up
Way above us the desert snow
White wind blow
I hold the line, the line of strength that pulls me through the fear
San Jacinto, I hold the line
San Jacinto, the poison bite and darkness take my sight
I hold the line
And the tears roll down my swollen cheek
Think I'm losing it, getting weaker
I hold the line, I hold the line
San Jacinto, yellow eagle flies down from the sun, from the sun
We will walk on the land
We will breathe of the air
We will drink from the stream
We will live, hold the line
Hold the line, hold the line
We will live, hold the line
Hold the line, hold the line
I hold the line - the line of strength that pulls me through the fear.
the song is very good) this is my childhood) now I'm watching this video with tears in my eyes... such nostalgia...
So good! Peter Gabriel is a genius
Peter Gabriel une legende du Rock tout le monde connais Peter Gab.
I wish this would get remastered in 4K UHD
OMG I loved Peter with Genesis and met him and others back stage at York Uni when just getting known. Such a lovely man and never forget Sandra xx
Gosh I'm jealous! York is a lovely campus now 😊
It feels like dying, letting go of life-
Cut up land, each house, a pool-
Poison bite and darkness take my sight-
I hold the line-
The line of strength that pulls me through the fear.
Alles zittert, summt, klingt in mir. Wundervoll!
You are a great musician, writer, Artist that we all know! But you are even a better Man (Human Being) then you are a Musician and that is hard because you are to me the greatest Artist, writer etc I have ever herd and seen and I'm in the music industry too. I'm a lighting designer and sound man. I started working a super trooper follow spot with some of the best. But as great as you are as a fellow Human Being, Man you are even better! Thank you from my Heart for being the great Artist you are. But more importantly the man(Human Being) you are!Sincerely, Brian c Smith.
🎉ich hab ihn auf 1 Open Air Konzert erlebt, vor über 30 J.Es war genial!! 😊
The whole song is incredible. But his last falsetto gives me the goosebumps.
Yesterday my grandmother had a stroke. she is in the hospital right now and we know she is not going to live. this song has helped me begin to deal with the pain. thank you Peter Gabriel for this masterpiece and for every other masterpiece you wrote from 1971+
Always loved his pantomime type movement. And that voice! Can't be real!
Got to see him do this in the early eighties. Then I ended up living in San Jacinto. lol.
So good. He was always good. Saw him in a small venue on his first solo tour in '77 and another small venue on the following tour. Class act.
This song helped inspire me to explore new textures in sound when I started recording.
What a song !! strong and powerful.. That's Peter The King and nothing else..
This song always makes me cry ....what a brilliant lyricist
ideal music for troubled times ... One of the best live music sessions I came across
My favorite Peter Gabriel song of them all.
I get goosebumps every single time that I listen to this... Best show ever, unforgettable! Still dreaming of this concert, years later..
I am waiting for October..I am 70..and don't get out much but this will be my first time ever seeing Mr Gabriel.. 💓 I literally cannot wait..I feel like a kid on way to Disneyland but much, much better!!!
@ninajo33 you are in for a real unique show, he's phenomenal ❤️
@@christimentus4425 I literally cannot wait..But I'll still be here in October!!!
If it's in the works..How could it not be???
Thanks 🙏👍!!!
@ninajo33 I cannot make this show. I've seen him 3 times and each time, it's own unique experience indeed. Please let me know how it is. I've heard many wonderful reviews .
@@christimentus4425 just wondering if you live in the U S or overseas? I live in So California in the Coachella Valley...Love the desert and the heat but also love Baja.. just don't get to travel much.
Peter Gabriel will be at the new arena and it will be great..I'll be sure to remember to let you know what it's like..I guess you take lighters and no cell phones..I hope I can follow protocol and still have fun..My favorite concert of all time was Cal Jam 70..
I was expecting my son, and it was insane, crowded, loud and crazy..but then, so were we, my son's dad and I!!!it will be me only, cause my son is Metallica oriented and that's another local venue I'm not even attempting at my age!!!.
Take care and thanks for taking time to talk to me !
Standing atop the Sandia mountains watching the sun set…this gave me chills whent the bass hit…😮
PG is on another plane, love him.
This man is magical.
Peter Gabriel can make a good performance into a mystical *event*! I like how at the end the shadow reminds me of those ancient cave paintings...:-)/
A haunting song and performance.
Wow 10 years this has been here and I finally made it.
🔥👆🙏🏽💜✨ YEAH...!!! ⚡
I remember the first time I was awoken to Peter Gabriel, Shock the Monkey and MTV. Yes kids that was back when MTV still played music. From that video I had to get my hands on everything he had done. This is one of my favorites from his earlier stuff. He's an odd duck and really talented.
Goosebumps too. That voice. Not even a straight melody, so complex
