- What happens when The FIFTY goes Freaky Friday and switches it all up?
Heading out to Summit County, CO to ski the classic town backcountry lap, The Silver Couloir on Buffalo Mountain, skier and star Cody Townsend, decides to jump behind the camera and aim the lens on The FIFTY's principle cinematographer, Bjarne Salen. Joined up with Summit County ski mountaineering legend, Teague Holmes, Bjarne and Cody head out for a day that challenges them both as they switch roles for the day. The episode gives a unique insight into how the process of The FIFTY works through highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each person's role.
This is line 35 of 50 of The FIFTY completed by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains along with the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

Cody is slowly becoming the lorax
This really shows how much work Bjarne puts in behind the lens, as well as how much skill he has. This episode looked good, not great, but good enough to be entertaining. However, if you click to another 50 Project video, the quality of shots, angles and flow of the film easily outshines this one!
Yeah. Cody's filming in comparison to the average joe was quite good, but in comparison to Bjarne was pretty trash hahaha. Great to see Bjarne in front of the camera and his personality.
Bjarne makes it look easy!
Bjarne is definitely a consummate pro, but I think they use a third party editing group to put their videos together. I don't know if it's just the lower quality of the raw footage or if they also intentionally made the video more awkward for storytelling purposes.
Bjarne is a fucking legend, both for his work on the Fifty and the quality of everything else he's done! Also, it's nice in this day and age to see pro's who don't take themselves seriously 100% of the time.
Man the first 5 minutes is making me crack up so bad. Cody’s face when he realised the cap was still on was priceless
I really appreciate the “human interest” side of this season. Every vid so far we see not just skiing, but camaraderie, and personality.
Enjoyable as always.
And btw, I’ve always carried my camera holstered across my chest backpacking, hiking, skiing... Easy access gets the shots.
I'm still astonished with how high of quality you guys have been able to achieve on the 50. Bjarne uses such a minimal setup, and on the fly. With a few action cameras, Mic kit, two zooms for the full frame a7riii and a drone you guys put out some of the best outdoor content I've ever seen. No need for a Red camera, or a pro Red Bull crew. Purely inspiring!
My only question is who does the edits?
As a camera buff, it's the magic of the Sony full frame mirrorless that changed the game. I have a first gen A7 and Bjarne has the vastly improved A7 iii. It gets the quality of shots of Cannon/Nikons, but at much less weight and size. Cannon has recently stepped up and made a similar camera, but it's still pretty bulky comparatively, even though I think Cannon lenses are the cat's meow comparatively to Sony.
@@MrJoeycrackers even my alpha6000 is nuts for shooting video in all light
@@MrJoeycrackers in my opinion the A7 riii is the one to have, definitely a step up from the Ii and not exorbitantly expensive. Also they make e mount adapters so you can use Canon lenses. But to be honest, I'd just go with a Zeiss lens. But I think we're missing the whole point; you don't need the best most modern gear to capture amazing footage and tell an amazing story. Bjarne and Cody can do it, so hopefully with some try hard, we can do as well. Bjarne inspires me to get better with my current a6000 and kit lenses.
@@_e5598 I also bought an a6000 years ago and love it. I recommend it to anyone who doesn't necessarily need to shoot in 4K. But if they do; step up to a a6500. The in body stabilization will open up the whole world of prime lenses for quality video shots. Just buy a lot of fw50 batteries.
Yew!!! I'm really liking the narrative you add to these "less dramatic" lines. It's fun, informative and really personalizes the two of you. Also, Bjarne is a ripper!
the highlight of my fortnight
I’ve loved getting to see more of Bjarne and his work this winter!! Thanks guys
Best filmed of the 50? No. Most interesting? Certainly among the top 3. Particularly the dialogue at 8:57 to 10 something; thank you for the insights, and thank you both for continuing to film this.
Pure golden "crew" feeling in this one and mutual respect. This i what touring is all about. Trust and joy. This makes me 10 times more ski "sick" than some typical athlete edit. Thanks from the heart!
This episode has literally made me feel pre-emptively sad for when this series will end. We are well past half way now, and although it may take several seasons just to get the conditions right on certain lines, their is only a few seasons and 15 episodes left. I really hope they continue working together and filming some sort of similar style content in the future, it's just so enjoyable and so very very well done.
Never clicked on a video faster
Bjarne, don’t let Cody have the camera anymore! ;-)
Hugs & luv you both of you ❤️
The videographers on all of these extreme videos are always the strongest members of the crews! Good to see his perspective!
Couldn’t imagine skiing with all that!
"cropping one skiier, bye" I lost it.
saw the memes rolling through my feed, so I knew there was a new episode.
I will be 67 in March a female live in NYC. can't wait for Cody's adventures! I get so excited when i see upload video. What you bring us are Crazy, wild, free and cool, collective. Thank you for taking me places that I would have never seen or been to. Great work. Your attitude bring my blood pressure, heart rate goes down. Just love what you do!
This is so cool and I'm thankful that this series is connecting with you. So very appreciated.
literally laughed out loud when Cody realized the cap was on...classic!
this is the one run of the 50 that i have actually done, and what i find interesting is that you guys make it look effortless. i remember slogging up to the top of buffalo knowing i would never do it again, despite the fun descent. as always, when your newest vid comes up time stops and i have to watch it immediately. great stuff. keep it safe.
Thanks Peter. Its definitely a really fun line. Great backyard lap.
@@CodyTownsend so let me start by saying I was a big fan of the Fifty, but this episode is the last that I'll watch. Maybe you should change the title from "The Fifty" to "All About Cody". Very little about the actual climb and ski, but all about you and trying to be a photo/filming dude. I've done this "backyard lap" and was hoping for something more from you on this, but maybe our little Colorado representation of The Fifty is less worthy of a real effort. The last few episodes with e-bikes and death valley bicycle approaches lets me know that skiing these routes isn't the main priority, but being all about Cody is the real theme here.
So much respect for Bjarne. Honestly for any crew that goes up into the the mountains to film. When I film with my buddies they realize it’s so much more work than anyone realizes
As a ski filmer myself, this episode gave me so many laughs. Glad to see light shed on what we do, not as many people realize the hard work and dedication that goes into it
As the friend in the group that always films, this is my favorite episode by far. It's always a hoot to have someone else take on the role and see all the work that goes into it. Really shows how invaluable it is to have a guy like Bjarne on the team in order to get the good footy.
Bjarne is golden!!! Another Excellent episode🙌👍😍You guys are such a great team.
Cody does a great job at entertaining and making it fun to watch. Bjorne makes it beautiful and possible to watch.
One of my favorite episodes
One of the best episodes yet for sure! I always knew bjarne ripped from the work he did with Andreas. It was great to see more behind the scenes stuff re: the filming process as well!
Guys, you are super. Amazing idea to show us much more Bjarne and realising that he makes soooo mush always.
Thank you all, love you chanel
As the local "guy who brings a good camera on backcountry trips" I really appreciated this video.
Cheers
It was great to see the roles reversed. Really inspiring to get an insight into the difference skills required to both film, ski and present information in an interesting way. Excellent work all round guys. 😊
Love the episode! The switch rolls was awesome!
I am pumped for this one!! Shows all the work that really goes into it besides the task of actually doing the line.
I’ve been thinking to myself while watching so many eps that I wish Bjarne got more credit in this project so I was so happy to see this video!
Great stuff as always Cody, Bjarne and the rest of the team.
Awesome this dropped right as my break started!
Brilliant episode! Really interesting to see you guys work the other side, and really appreciate how much work and preparation goes on from role. Well done both... and Teague of course
I love how much you two appreciate each other and your strengths. It is apparent in every show, but this episode really shines a light on it.
That was so fun, thanks for making that guys! I've been waiting to see this switcheroo
Every new episode is such a treat and it never disappoints. I never want this to end, I wish for you to finish what you set out to do but after that... Just keep going!
Exactly my thoughts..
Great to see that you guys show the magic of the craft! Bjarne is an awesome videographer (probably photographer as well)!
This is such a great episode. One of my favs
Awesome video! Loved the switch. Got a new appreciation for what both of you do. Thanks for sharing.
You guys are absolute legends.... amazing, love the fun, skill and wisdom on display. Thanks guys!
This is hilarious😂 Bjorne out here star of the show with Cody filming💯💯💯 Your a star to Bjorne. Cody’s just kinda the frontman.
Love all of this. Complementary skills sets. Showing the teamwork that makes the dream work
So great... well done guys. Awesome!
4:55 Pure and absolute terror for two seconds. Authentic emotion captured. The true dream of any film maker accomplished.
Thank you so much for this! I love this series!
Fantastic episode! I esp loved the dialog on the way up about trust and partnership. So cool, and so necessary for outdoor endeavors like The Fifty and more. And I'm sure you both have seen the trust and partnership grow tremendously over the span of this, and today, it took another big leap forward as you each have a better understanding of the various roles played by each other. Way way cool. Thanks again.
You are a great ski mountaineer Cody. Keep the story rolling! Your friend knows his lens caps - capisce!
Much respect for Bjarne. I’m gonna be real sad when this project is over. Love these videos
Bravo men! You guys are killing it on all fronts! Endurance, story telling, amazing shots!
Killer! You guys make me smile every time. That's my favourite part.
Why thank you. That's about as nice of a compliment as it gets.
What a great episode. I majored in photojournalism with the hope of shooting (it was actual film back then) for Powder Magazine, but life got in the way. I did run into the greatest of all time Warren Miller at Vail one day back in the 80s. I got to ski a few laps with him and it was just an incredible experience. He was the same in person as he was in his films.
11:02 Track drop is bomb Cody.. Great video as always!!
Buenos dias Boys! you are soo soo chill! im enjoying this so much.
Im from Germany and loving this Series
Cant wait for a next Project :D
This episode was long overdue, loved it!
Great one, loved it. 👌
That's our backyard ! It's good you had a guide because getting back to the road can be very tricky. What a good ski and good one to turn the roles! Keep it coming you guys are rad!
This is one of the first times you see someone take on the job that makes them look awesome. It was amazing to see the process and work Bjarne puts into each shot! Like not forgetting the lense cap 😁
Great show. Kind of hoping that once the 50 is complete you guys can tackle lines on your personal bucket list.
Bajarme always puts in work, you can just tell from watching all the episodes. But tbf Cody you got some bangers! 🤌🏼
Really shows how well they work as a team. both have different strengths and weaknesses and it works very well.
ah... the backyard.... I stayed at the Condo's right before where you parked, winter 18-19 building a house at the bottom of this mountain.... lots of great pow days that year. not much of shit up there yet this season.
Awesome episode! What a sick team you guys have been, great to see actually how hard this is to capture when living in terrifying environments! Thanks for the ride guys!
SWITCHIN' the narratives!!!! PERFECT! as a weekly Vlogger? i soooooooooo identified with this Vlog! THANK YOU! BEST ONE YET!!!!! and? you're skiing in my backyard! THANK YOU!!!!
you two are fantastic.......like brothers. I just love watching your videos and was so happy to see the one from today.
You both are rocking it. Next time you do Mount Strachen invite me along.
Sheila Vancouver BC Canada
Very nice story! It was very useful to see how it is made from the other angle. Thanks guys!
Very cool!!! Great idea to highlight what you guys are doing.
Haha this is so funny. I ❤ Bjarne. He's hilarious
Great episode again ! You're doing a good job on finding New ways of telling a story when maybe it's not the most interesting mountain. I've enjoyed it a lot !
This was a wicked fun video with you guys switching spots, but we can definitely see why Bjarne usually works the cameras. I almost died when you pulled the cap off the GoPro, that was amazing. 😂🤣 That was a sweet couloir.. actually that whole run looked like a ton of fun. Great job making a passable film of that Cody!
Thanks!
Nice to see who is behind the camera at the Fifty and good job on carying all that equipment🤩👏
Bjarne's a legend, continue to be rad. I'd be amped to see some more tips and tricks Bjarne has for filming in the backcountry and I'm of course looking forward to Cody's progression as a videographer, you got this!
As a person behind the camera, trying to make interesting content, I can relate to this so much. What a great idea, and I enjoyed this episode a lot!
Loved this!
Loved this one!
So sick!! Great work dudes!!
This episode was hilarious. Good stuff!
Teague!!! Good seeing you on here buddy.
Cool fun idea! You guys rock!
This is the best ski content imo
Best video in this series by far
This is a great insight into the art of filmmaking
Haha yes!! What a great idea, Bjarne needs his own version of the 50 shot by Cody.
14:19 - Geeez Cody couldn't you at least pay Bjarne enough for him to wear trousers and gloves without holes? :D
Fantastic episode. These are getting so good, with great varied content and style in the last handful of episodes. I am always the camera guy / video creator for the adventures with my buddies and the racing ahead and quickly planning the shot takes a ton of effort. It feels like you end up covering twice the ground as the rest of the crew. Nicely done, great to see a glimpse into how these are shot.
Thanks Derek. Much appreciated..
Great flip around! Well disserved and a 1st really. Overdue!
Love it guys, thanks
This is really cool, guys! I always thought this series was a combo of both of your skills, and this was a fun way to demonstrate it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great job on this one.
You guy's make a great team !!
Good work guys, as always. Fun twist to change filmer.
colorado! I love the goofy behind the scenes takes that you keep in the video hahaha
Cool way to take the "edge" off lines that have far fewer consequences than others you've filmed. Just a nice walk in the forest with a nice ski at the end. 5 stars.
As a person who started on Cody's side of the lens, and now on Bjarne's side of the lens, I love every aspect of this episode! Glad to see Bjarne taking the minimalist approach like myself! And I love all the mistakes Cody was making as I've made all of those mistakes multiple times! Well done Lads. Much respect
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Nice, interesting to see the other side. Thanks.
Skiing the mountains is the best!
Three things, bjarne is cool. I love his van. That looked like a lovely day out .
I love all the behind-the -scene stuff. I'd really like to do film, but I am still learning how to use my camera for photos, so this was really interesting! Pls do another! 😂
That was very fun. And funny! I can't speak to the skimo aspect of the mountain, but Buffalo is a fun hike/trail run. You get up high fast, there's some rugged terrain up there, and great views.
