  • Mountains can have a certain energy to them and mountain called Split, located in the High Sierra Mountain Range in eastern California, has an energy with a dark side. Split Mountain is a 14,000 foot peak with a perfect couloir dividing two prominent summits. Visually, it’s a line that begs to be skied yet is guarded by a series of icefalls, rock steps and blue ice patches that make it extremely challenging. On top of that, the towering walls of the couloir present significant rockfall hazard along with an upper basin that can create dangerous avalanche conditions. It’s a line that requires patience, perfect timing…and many many attempts. Over the last 4 years, Cody Townsend, Nick Russell and cinematographer Bjarne Salén have been waiting, trying, scoping and learning about the history of this line, its moods, its conditions and its energy to successfully, and safely, ski it.

I am constantly amazed by Bjarne, he is climbing and skiing this near impossible and dangerous terrain right next to Cody, he is also capturing it in world class cinematography. He has to concentrate on not only not dying, but making sure everything they are doing is captured on camera and looks amazing. He is an elite ski mountaineer and cinematographer.

Thanks for the kind words, Andrew. It's not always easy, that's for sure. The more we know our partners out there in the mountains, what they are good at and how we work as a team the better. Cody and I spent a lot of time together and I feel we getting stronger and stronger together.

The fact that you guys show this level of backing out and committing to safety, will spill on to a whole generation of beginner backcountry skiers and definitely save lives for years to come. You guys are building a whole ski culture around smart decision making and respectful group dialogues in the mountains. So grateful for that every time I’m the only girl in a group of dudes and something doesn’t feel right. Same goes for guys speaking up to other guys I guess, especially when there are different experience levels etc. THANK you for empowering those doubts and smart decisions, I’d rather speak up and back out than end up in a scary or life threatening situation.

I love how Bjarne could sense your hesitation and gave the "Listen to your gut. Take a couple of deep breaths and listen to your gut." He knew it and you knew it. Just needed to initiate the group discussion. Nick's response "I'm not going to convince you guys, I think we should climb back out if you're not feeling it." Solid crew!

My experience with Skimo and mountaineering in general is that you should basically expect your prospective feature or peak to be a Recon mission with the "possibilty" of skiing or climbing if things fall into place and all parties are in agreement. A day spent in the mountains and coming home safe is always better

Been guiding since 1977 with lots of time around 4,000 meters. Simply LOVED the excellent decision making, the bailing when it wasn't right and then getting the line when it was OK. There is so much learning here. I hope many, many young "hard hitters" will watch, reflect, and learn. A master class on how it is done safely and well! Barvo.

This was a great episode! At 64, I am now part of the old not bold ski mountaineer clan. Of course the cinematography by Bjarne was yet again fantastic and the line unbelievable but, the focus on decision making was great to see. Far too often this aspect of alpine work is glossed over. I could spend hours sharing moments I’ve spent with my team coming to terms with risk acceptance or voting to bail out as a group.

Brilliant video, Cody and Bjarne! Simply brilliant. I’ve been watching this channel since the first episode and I have to say this is the best episode yet… for the stunning videography (as usual!) but moreso for the way you showed us what a serious challenge this line was, and especially for the very sound judgment and decision-making you guys exhibited. Frankly, looking at how terrible the conditions of the line in February were, I would have given you an honorary check mark for this line for turning back! There are old mountaineers, and there are bold mountaineers, but there are very few old bold mountaineers! But your persistence paid off in the spring, and I salute you for completing this challenge. Kudos.

And if you think you can't clearly make those things happen, then you are better off finding a different method or coming back another time. That's the kind of style I will emulate my whole life. A lot of people say it (and a lot don't), but not on the same stage as you, while skiing such epic lines. Can't wait for more videos.

Awesome episode! Telling this story of a years pursuit, and capturing the highs and lows of each attempt was perfect.

So rad. The years of waiting for the achievement is so worth it. I had a similar experience over the last few years trying to summit Mt Rainier from a certain direction and finally getting this year. Congrats guys!

Respect the skier not for what he chooses to ski, but for what he chooses not to ski… thanks for the (cautious) inspiration Cody! Deeply meaningful.

This was so amazing!! The decision making, the team work, the patience. When it's good, it's good! Turn around times are so important - thanks for showing this!

A 1000 yes’s to get to the goal and just 1 no to turn around. Great descent Cody and Bjarne!

Reminds me a lot of "Into Thin Air" and the importance of setting and abiding by a turnaround time. You guys made the right call to bail on that first attempt, great to show that in the video as well, you serve as an example to a lot of people.

Amazing as always. I'd love to see a behind the scenes bonus feature where you talk more about the nuts and bolts of filming these lines. I see the notice in the disclaimer about using drones within while respecting wilderness zone restrictions, I'd love to hear more of the discussion where you & Bjarne talk about things like what camera gear/setups you decide to take on any given project and how you make those filming decisions. I think it would be really neat to hear the decision making process, and maybe talk about the editing/assembling process where you figure out how to get these shots, all the pre-planning that goes into shooting something like this, and then the needing to potentially improvise/change plans when you get on the mountain. I'd like to hear the process of getting the best quality you can while not compromising safety and how you make those kinds of decisions.
