The FIFTY - Line 31/50 - Mt. Stimson - Misery Loves Company

- In the NW corner of Montana, a ten-thousand foot mountain rises out straight out of the thick forest. Mt. Stimson dominates the skyline like a giant shark tooth turned upside down. The SW Face of Stimson, first skied by Pete Costain and Andy Zimet in 1997, is a five-thousand foot, steep, exposed and sustained face that guards all falls with a three-hundred foot cliff at the bottom. It's a challenging ski line to begin with, but guarding the mountain is a nine miles approach filled with thousands of deadfall trees, thick forests and nearly impenetrable willows. Add in a narrow canyon, a slick cobblestoned creek that must be crossed hundreds of times and no defined trail and you have the single hardest approach for any ski line so far in The FIFTY series. Joined by snowboarded Nick Russell, Cody Townsend and cameraman Bjarne Salen embark on a three day sufferfest of epic proportions.
This is Episode 28 for The FIFTY, and line 31 of 50 completed by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains along with the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

Cody: "This is the worst approach of my life."
“Tomorrow we’ll think it’s awesome” is so relatable. It is amazing how sometimes situations of absolut misery can bring us so much joy afterwards :D
That sound of skins on packed snow, early in the morning of what's gonna be a long sufferfest... that's why I'm here, gave me chills. So ready for snow now!
Damn Nick has got to be the right dude to go on this sort of suffer fest with. What a great attitude.
Favourite episode by far - the most accurate representation of 90% of my touring.
"I thought my pack was caught on something, then I realized that it's just really heavy."
What an epic mission and one hell of a bushwhack ! Stoked to have The FIFTY back.
Having spent the last 5 years touring in NW Montana, specifically the Middle Fork of the Flathead area, I can confirm that it takes a special breed to access so much of the terrain there. Cheers to you all for accomplishing a true bear of an approach and this epic mountain!
Best line of all seasons: “This is so stupid already.”
Here in the PNW, we just call that “goin’ Spring touring.”
The melancholy music
Man, I’ve missed this!
"I'm only gonna ski what the mountain lets me ski..." brilliantly concise, very packable.
I've been looking forward to this video for a while. Stimson is a monster. The first time I got a good look at it I said "I'll never go near that thing." A year later we did this same approach for a summer climb. It was an awesome time. My friend almost lost her shit in that regrowing pine forest on the way out. Glad you got to ski it, thanks for the awesome videos.
Things I care about while watching:
Props to Nick for keeping those vibes high all the way to the end!
I sold my AT gear last year and I was worried, but this didn't make me regret my decision. Even if I wanted to (I don't) I could never find someone to do this with me. Tons of respect for Nick for humbly checking off the gnarliest episode yet.
And I thought my ridiculous hikes to ridiculous places were hard. Bravo to all of you.
“We’ll think it’s awesome tomorrow” -Nick
