The FIFTY - FULL MOVIE - Line 28-30/50 - "The Mountain Why" - w/ Cody Townsend & Michelle Parker

- The FIFTY continues...But with a twist.
The goal was simple, ride bikes, loaded down with 100 pounds of climbing, skiing and camping equipment, over 1000 miles to ski three of The Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America. A tiring adventure and a sufferfest of course, but in the context of an ongoing global pandemic, a nation divided by chaos and a populace on the brink, a simple adventure throws the simple act of adventure into question. Why purposely suffer? Why selfishly pursue adventure? Why go into the mountains at all? All questions that a month long adventure begins to throw into your mind. Starring Cody Townsend and Michelle Parker, "The Mountain Why" is a ski adventure unlike any normal escape to the wild.
This is a short film in The FIFTY series and line 28, 29, and 30 completed for The FIFTY, a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

Bjarne totally won. He got to ski all three mountains, but drive and sleep in his awesome van.
and only had to film two of them
Some would disagree. type 2
And nobody ripped a gnarly fart on his face
Had to comment again... that fart was epic. Haven’t laughed that hard in a long time.
Ditto
Me too buddy, i can't stop watching
I read that comment and thought. Oh, it's gonna be funny, he's gonna fart... then I started watching... Well well well :D
I think Cody enjoyed it stayed put!
Holly smokes! That girl can hold real hot compressed air, great sound by the way!
After watching this I have now realized that I can never complain about being tired ever again. You two are maniacs, in the best possible way.
Michelle - showing us what it means to be a real friend, showing up for the toughest adventure, and powering through... that massive fart!!!! HAHAHA Incredible film, team!
Crazy how people react because two people are peacefully riding their bikes! Max respect to the two of you💪💪🤙🏿...also a very nice message in the end. Thanks a lot!!!
Another awesome video, one of the best ski series period
I concur
Great addition to "The Fifty".
Riding on the 12" shoulder with semi's blasting by you was the scariest scene of the whole series.
Childhood friendships wow that's so rare you guy's are truly blessed! Glad you gave that transport truck the finger.
Some truck drivers are nothing but a s......bag!
That flipping the bird from Cody at 9:50 :D that's literally me every day on my way to work, when cars can't seem to make a decent pass
“I can’t be trusted to make decisions” says the guy who planned the adventure, awesome!
2:15. Given sufficient funds, gear and time, who the hell WOULDN'T want to spend all their time riding bikes and skiing!!!!
Holy shit guys. This is it right here. Equal parts impressed, inspired, and appreciative of the narrative you chose. Cheers to sweeter mountain days in 2021 for having experienced the lows of 2020.
Such a cool adventure in difficult times, and filming was top notch, well done Biarne🔝🔝 and yes the work you guys put into the audio really makes this episode stand out
Thanks a ton!
Bjarne, Michelle, Cody, and the whole team, this is truly amazing!!! What an accomplishment. The journey offered so much perspective on so many different topics. Congratulations and thank you!!
Much appreciated. Thanks
This reminded me of Sufferfest w/ Cedar Wright and Alex Honnold. I kept worrying about Michelle Parker's skis. Did they ever hit the ground like when the trailer tire was lost?
This was the Ironman of his 50 descents. Not many people are in good enough shape to do this. Very impressive!
That last bike leg with people shooting around you specially at that time of the year, impressive you kept on moving, great video, epic adventure!
HUGE thank you to Cody and Bjarne for realizing and creating this massive project. First time I've ever binged anything on UA-cam and way more entertaining and informative than most everything I've binged on Netflix or network tv. Looking forward to more!!
Truly impressive watching Bjarne’s cinematic progression through this series. He took it to a whole new level with this short!
I lived in Minneapolis during the protests and just a few blocks from where George was killed. Thank you so much for including that into part of your story on the 50. I'm happy you both really internalized it and showed your support. It means a lot to those of us who wish to see all people treated equally, and especially for our friends and family in the black community who are suffering. Yet another reason why I love The 50.
Lol you mean riots
Your virtue signaling means nothing 🥴
Michelle was amazing. What a grueling adventure.
My favorite 50's short.
All I can say is WOW. Going to turn 60 in a month and this video gives me inspiration to keep pushing forward. If for no other reason than to get the most out of life. Love this series.
Was literally on your YT channel last night wondering... what’s going on with the 50.
Here we go. Thanks!
Same here hahahaha on a snowboard though of course 🏂❄❄❄
Wow! I’ll never utter the words “i‘m tired” again on a day of touring and skiing! That was epic! Congrats!
The feat of riding those miles, climbing the vertical, and withstanding all the pressures that surrounded you two was entertaining and quite moving. Michelle, your comments hit home and made it a bit emotional as I followed you two every step. These days with everyone being idle it was great to follow such an endeavor. The comments below about CV are uncalled for. If you knew a family member that has contracted it and another family member on the frontlines you might change your tune. Keep the great content coming Cody. I am hoping to ski some vert this winter, but not wishing to have to ride the roadbike to get there. If I had another adventure I would like to take, it would be scaling one of those 50 with you and crew and enjoying that finish beer at the end. Really enjoyed the film.
Thank you for such kind words on the film. Very much appreciated.
Your vids are a big part of what has inspired me to get out and start hiking again after years of letting it take a back seat to the rest of life. I've even managed to get my son out there on the trails with me to feel the burn and it's been a blast. I really appreciate what you and the team are doing. Keep it up, you are doing great work and it is making a difference.
Dear Cody and Bjarne ,thank you so much !
so glad to see you back Cody!
There are so many amazing and brilliantly talented people in the world. And Cody, Michelle, and Bjarne - you are some of them! Thank-you so much for your hard-work, dedication, and inspiration. Your passion and tenacity are what make people great and you are doing good work (even if at times it may feel meaningless). Keep changing, being the change, and inspiring change! And fucking shred!! TOOT TOOT
Thanks so much Kerry.
LOL Michelle is the perfect addition. So glad I found this series. Tahoe to Hood is a haul. Ah and you're Passing through Susanville where I spent a long cold couple days after New Years 2003-04, after blowing up my car driving from Atlanta straight through 42 hours to Susanville where the engine seized up. Fun times. Love those back roads you guys are taking. Lots of fun to be had along the way too. Great idea and so glad I am now seeing it.
Such a touching incredible super movie. Thanks to all you guys who made it and sponsored it..... legends!
What a classic! What an inspiration!
Watched this on the Redbull channel, gonna watch it again here because I like it so much. Cody, Michelle and the production crew did a phenomenal job on this one.
Everything about this adventure was unreal! Michelle is the best friend everyone needs in their life, and this feat was so incredibly documented … thank you for continuing to keep pushing!! Much ❤️
Totally missed this series, glad to see an update despite the current state of the world.
I had been wondering for months if this was ever going to continue, or if Cody had given up (for good and realistic reasons, though). I am really pleased to see this is continuing. The bike thing is probably not really necessary, but certainly makes it more interesting and for Cody and Michelle it must really keep them in great shape for the skiing later.
So good to see you all kicking on! Legends
Two tough people, with strong wills, and epic challenge. Congratulations, you guys killed it.
What an incredible journey! The way you could viscerally feel the exhaustion through the screen was wild -- what a story. I hope we get to see the behind-the-scenes work on this adventure! It would be so cool to see the massive amount of planning behind it, and also learn about the bike setups!
A down-to-earth and beautiful adventure film, great job Michelle, Cody and team!
Cody Townsend video posted 32 minutes ago? Lets Go!!
I don't even like to drive 97, let alone ride a bike on it. Awesome video!
Impressive feat of endurance and perseverance. Truly an awe-inspiring adventure of epic proportions. Congrats to you both!
she was genuinely about to make a grown man cry cause what she said was touching 🥺
I'm amazed! Thanks for your effort and sharing it through this video. Its stuff like this that moves me from thinking, "how the hell am I going to get up that 8000ft route" to, "put in the work and just go do it! Then do something bigger." Road closed for the season? Fine, just skin the 10 miles to the trailhead!
That’s awesome to hear this is a source of inspo. Cheers
Finally! New Cody content! Love it, thanks mate.
I thought, why? But then again, so did you! Thank you for documenting and sharing with all of us!
My favourite ski series ever. This was truly epic. Would have been so easy to tap out. Brilliant filming, fully captured the essence of the challenge. And the philosophy of why perfectly summed up at the end. A truly inspiring adventure created by humble yet supremely talented crew. The right side of crazy👌
Thanks so much Simon
Oh my, that final rock field descent must've hurt! Congrats and thanks for the inspiration!
I am exhausted just watching this....going to take a nap now!! Well done you two!
Been watching all the 50 vids, this one shows the true depth of athleticism and mental toughness!
Crazy climbing a bike with all that weight! Suuuuuper sketchy cycling next to semi trailers at full speed!!! 😳😳
Some amazing insights from both along the way.
Congratulations to all involved in this project, I really enjoyed watching. Inspirational 😄
Super Vid. Kudos to Michelle and Cody for doing what all us mediocre bikers, hikers, climbers and skiers deep down wish we could do ourselves. So thanks for the vicarious experience and I look forward to the watching the next 20 adventures. Enduring the lockdowns of this pandemic was a lot better today because of you. Your Canadian fans!
Cody drinking that beer at 35:35 looks like he's about a day away from ended up in an old folks home! Great movie.
I definitely was
Asking why and asking how much/harder/higher/faster/further I can go, these are the questions that keep me going every day. I'm not sure I actually want to find an answer to any of them, because asking at all can be do so dang fulfilling.
missed ya dude, your ambition, goals, drive to achieve them, and the incredibly generous decision to document it all for the rest of us FOR NO CHARGE is truly inspiring to me. especially when i know how brutal and monotonous every step of the way can be when you gotta film it all. Not to mention I wanna gouge my eyes out after 10 minutes of editing and you do a killer job of it so kudos to you. so good to see ya back man!
Second time watching this movie. I cannot believe how beautiful the states are.... wow.
SO impressed with the journey you both made. Incredible.
Thanks so much for this film. Coincidentally, I only came across your 'Fifty' series about 3 weeks ago, and have only just finished catching up with the previous episodes - so this was perfect timing for me! The reflection on challenge, suffering and change is so important and relevant just now, and I am really pleased that you weren't tempted to succumb to the pressure to find some nicely tied up awakening to serve as a concluding summary. As is so often the case, questions that lead to more questions are so much more important (and interesting). Thanks for pulling together a beautiful, thoughtful and really fun edit - tricky to achieve the balance, but I think you smashed it. I am looking forward to the next 20.
Yeah, you want the answer, reach for it, but it's usually never truly there... but that's often the point. Experiences don't have to have a purpose.
@@CodyTownsend ah so grasshoppa
Holy crap you guys are nuts...for riding on the shoulder of Hwy 97...and absolutely certifiable for the rest of the trip but it was an accomplishment for sure. Congrats on pulling it off. Unforgetable.
Thoroughly enjoyable start to finish. Love the progression in your 2 careers!
Michelle Parker sent this with a bike that doesn’t have gears as low as Cody’s and ski boots that are 2 sizes too big.
So. Much. Respect. 🙌
Anyone who gave this a thumbs down is just a jerk. EPIC work!
I don’t know if I’ve commented on this video already but if I have I’ve just watched this again my respect for this has only got bigger. Taking the opportunity during very trying times to take on a goal like this is absolutely inspirational stuff to get on 2 bikes (with trailers) as newbies to bike travel 2000 miles to continue to do what they love in an even more environmentally friendly than to how they had been, I can’t say it enough fair play and maximum respect. You’ve put a little more motivation in me and for that and a quality video I say thanks very much brilliant stuff folks!!!!
Why thank you Dougal. So very appreciated.
"ohhh I need to sit down"
You earned it :)
"Because it's there" - Sir Edmund Hillary. was wondering why yall weren't out there driving to or going semi solo to knock off some of the lines. Guess i got my answer. Well done crew.
That was George Mallory said that, not Sir Ed; he "Knocked the bastard off."
Well I'm motivated....for what I now need to figure out
Thanks for sharing your epic adventure.
Thanks for watching!
Your work, your drive, your passion, your humor, of which are all fanonomal Cody!! We need a lot more people filled with love!! Keep on inspiring us! Cheering you on from Estonia ✌
“Even though there is a shallowness of purpose, there is a depth of meaning” -CT ; epic fuckin' film. kudos to you 3...damn
Absolute legends!
I laughed all three times I've watched this video. Michelle's fart is one of the best tuba's I've heard! LMAO. And I've farted a time or too myself! Great episode and an inspiring collection. As a fellow endurance junkie, keep up the great work Cody and co.
The final sentence is epic.
Congrats Cody.
I already had respect for you watching up to this point in the 50 project. But the amount of respect I have for you at this point I can't measure. This has to be one of the hardest feats I've heard of in my entire life. And on top of that I get to watch it. Incredible. Such strength from the both of you.
Thanks Cody! I appreciate your willingness to press on towards goals in the midst of questioning✌️
My pleasure!
So great to see so much resilience and commitment. Way to enjoy life! Props to the team!
Cody, MIchelle and Bjarne. I really love how raw this is and how clearly that rawness comes across on film. I think there's a mythology in endurance sports that these experiences will help us "find ourselves" or they will change us somehow. For some people that might be true. They might have revelatory experiences. For others, like myself, there is only the pain and suffering, and there is no grand reveal of our true nature. Years ago I decided to ride my bike through Korea and Japan, because I similarly wanted to change. After 10 days I sold my bike and flew back to the states. The thing I realized is that I didn't want to be out there suffering the entire time. I wanted to enjoy my silly little life. Thanks for not having some trite ending and a cliche answer to the question "why". I think your experience is far more reflective of real life, where there isn't always a clear answer to that question.
I've been reading and thinking alot about Simon Sineks "everything starts with WHY". I loved your point of view so much! Sometimes you'll figure out the why on the go cuz the journey is just too awesome to let slide!
Totally agree!
This is epic, as a community this is the content we must promote!!
Loved it! Thanks to all involved! Cheers!
Michelle is a machine, just amazing power in a small individual.
Agreed.
Cannot believe they pushed thru! Congrats!
Truly unbelievable. I've been following this for awhile now and... just inspiring. Great job to the team including Bjarne, what a magnificent cut. Love from Oregon.
Insane adventure, keep crushing the way to 50
Absolutely awesome film Cody and Bjarne! I'd love to see a bonus episode on your guys layering systems for touring! you guys are awesome look forward to seeing you guys getting after it this season!
Well done.. Amazing... Thank you for making a VBlog for us to see what it means to start an epic Journey and finish it.. wow.. As I know how you feel.. Sydney to Perth. 10 weeks riding.. Congrats and salutations
Was just watching your interviews on Blister yesterday, which lead me to see if there was any recent The FIFTY content. Stoked to see this uploaded today!
love that swatch hat you're wearing. seams very comfy and no signs of salt from sweat
This is super awesome and there are no words to describe how much inspirational this video is. I recently turned 30 with an average fitness levels (but improving day by day one small step at a time) and am working on my 2021 goal on some adventure (realistic but a tale that can be shared) . No idea what that is but in 2021, I will definitely make it work.
That is awesome! Remember, it's not about the size of the adventure, but how much you're inspired by it.
Such an epic journey! Greetings from Finland! Great to see Fifty is still progressing and cant wait for the next episode! Bjarne is really making it all work for us viewers with the beautifull filming. I really liked when you filmed with Fransson so great to see you back at your craft after what happened.
Yet another fantastic video Cody! Truly inspiring! I look forward to the remaining 20 and your journey to finish The Fifty.
So glad the fifty is back and looking forward to more
Thanks for reminding us we are capable of so much more than we could ever imagine if we are determined and press on even when every fiber tells us to quit
Brilliant to see you guys back and seemingly with more sponsorship, which is well deserved as this is one of the best series going around. Got me inspired to head to our high country and scope some lines for when winter returns. Good one Cody, keep going!
These people are legends.
Among the best adventure films I‘ve seen. Excellent filming, Music, editing and of course a beautiful and bold vision. Super well done and keep going!
Wishing you good fortune on the remaining descents
This film exhausted me just watching the extreme energy expended. Ooooooch
Such a cool adventure! Love watching your quest to ski all FIFTY classic ski descents in North America.
I simply have no words for how respect I have for you, your projects and your Channel.
That final day was unreal. Way to go you guys!
