  • I was asked to show more on the easy use of Woodturner Pro.
A simple piece of software that can make your first segmented wood turning easy. It also will help you understand how segmented turning works in general.
It is a wonderful piece of software that I purchased a number of years ago.
You can find a 30 day trial for the software. It is the full program with all the features.

The price for all the parts of the software is well worth it. I'll be buying it soon. I've used a wedgey sled and the wedge setting triangles.

I went on a segment spree, turned for relatives and my favorite doctors, I have a few. Then I
got more into natural turnings. I enjoy making something out of what might appear to be
nothing. That don't mean I don't love the master pieces you produce. Looking forward to
    your next piece.

Thanks Gerald. I probably do more turnings from logs than segments. Mostly segment work can take a lot more time. But I love them both about the same. Also I like stave turnings which are lots of fun.

Gary, thank you from the bottom of my heart in clarifying segmented turning. This is exactly what I need to start down this path. I will be purchasing this very soon.
BTW, I purchased a Wen Air Filter unit for my shop. It surely removes that residual wood dust from the air that settles everywhere. I think I picked up an allergic reaction to wood dust over the holiday time. So when you say “dust mask and face shield” on, now I know why. Might want to add a hazmat suit to keep the dermatitis at bay. Lol!

Haha, your excitement about this program comes through loud and clear, Gary! Your enthusiasm is contagious and I'll bet they see a sales increase thanks to your excellent tutorial! I will probably never be a segment turner but it sure is fun watching you plan, cut, glue and create! Great job, buddy! 😊

It is fun software to just play around with for sure. There are lots of times I just open it up with nothing in mind and see what I come up with. For sure you can do the same with paper and pencil. I did that for years at work laying out the patterns from a drawing on large sheets of paper just to figure out how I would construct them.
The 30 day trial is a full blown version so a good way to have a look at it.

Thank you for watching. I find it to be another great tool to have. The 30 day trial is a good way to look at the software. Not sure what happens after 30 days. Some software will not open and some will just not let you save your work.
Not trying to sell it but getting all the dimension right can save a lot of money in wasted cuts on expensive wood.
Just my 2 cents on that.

Although a number of CAD programmes I'm familiar with - including the "Wood turning pro" shown - Oh I do wish all this was available in my youth. My life, and many others, would have been much more simple.
Quite often though if I print the design I draw in a centre line - if one is omitted. I still refer to my past and consider a datum line or face is important. I still enjoy setting a design out and using geometric construction - much of which appears to have been forgotten.
Thank you Gary for another informative video. Many - as I - appreciate it!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

I agree with you on wishing these programs were around years ago.
As a wood pattern maker I had to make a layout of everything I made.
I would use trig to layout all the angles.
Even segments were all laid out and cut one at a time using a bandsaw and a disk sander to sand to the line.
But they were way to big for a wedgie sled which was not even thought of back then.
I still prefer some of those older ways of doing things.
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

Great video Gary, and thanks for expanding the things you can do in woodturner pro! Next time I use it I will be playing a bit more because all I have been doing is making simple bowls with it but getting all the measurements without all the math is what I like!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

Thank you Al, for sure one of the great features is getting all those dimensions so easily.
Sometimes I will change the layers so I can cut the strips all the same width. You can do that on some designs but not all.
As straight sided wall is easy to do but it might add just a little more to turn on the inside.
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

I have been using Woodturner Pro for over 20 years. It is great. I thought your explanations were good but could have been a bit more detailed. It's hard for me to follow the cursor when someone else it moving it. In my opinion, some narration about where on the screen you are working would be in order. Like you I also love 3D Design Pro. You can do some crazy shapes with that program. And like you mentioned, it's free with Woodturner Pro. You have to buy Woodturner Pro but the support is well worth it. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

We cut those on a band saw and sanded the ends on a disk sander. This was long before segment bowl turning came to be.

@ThePapa1947 it is from Woodworkers Supply (looks like they are New Mexico)
      Woodturner Pro Suite V3
Designed by Lloyd Johnson, Woodturner Pro Suite V3 offers three woodturning software applications in one package:
3D Design PRO lets you create a two dimensional vessel wall profile and then see a rendering in three dimensions. Start from scratch or open one of over 100 sample drawings. Designed for all woodturners, not just segmented turners.
Woodturner PRO allows you to add rings - flat, compound, staves and veneer - to your designs with a single mouse click. Decide how many segments per ring and use arrow keys to identify outside and inside diameters.
Lamination PRO helps your design and construct feature rings for segmented vessels from laminations.
