  • I get a lot of questions on segmented turning so I thought I would put out a video on my methods of design.
    Today I will explain some of my methods for designing segmented turnings.
    Free programs:
    DesignSpark: www.rs-online....
    www.rs-online....
    Segment Calculator 2 :
    play.google.co...
    Woodturner Pro: www.woodturner...
    I will be doing the turning soon as I am still resting from my surgery.
    If you found this video entertaining
    Please Like and Subscribe and Share if you are inclined
    The video is for entertainment purposes only
    You are watching how I do things and not suggesting others should do it the way I do.
    You need to know your machines and how to use them. Follow how the manufacture says to use them safely.
    Look up other turnings I have done:

    So glad you are pain free, Gary! That's a relief. I will enjoy seeing this drawing come to life when you are up to it which sounds like it won't be too much longer. Just return to the shop when you are ready and not a minute before that! We don't need any relapses! Take good care of yourself, my friend! 😊

    Thanks Gary. That informative video almost makes me want to try segmented turning, that and your other great demos on how to make spectacular turnings. I just have to reduce the number of once turned bowls, bowl blanks, logs and miscellaneous chunks of future projects to make the wife happy before starting another project. 😉 Maybe I can just start cutting some into strips and s he won’t notice. 🙄 Any way I still enjoy watching you skill in making beautiful pieces and for sharing your knowledge on how to make them. Hope your back to 100% soon. I know how more things seem to get to me (another 1947er). I thought getting older would take a lot longer. Hi Gary, so glad you are doing good! Take your time getting to where you need to be. Segmented turning is next on my list; thanks so much for these instructions, I’m sure I’ll be watching them multiple times, lol. But, I’ve finally got my “tool rest” completed to make bowls from boards and finished my first 4 layer (3 cut), bowl today! It’s not perfect, but I’m definitely on my way and the tool per your design works great! Guitars? It’s nice to have multiple hobbies - I’m a fiddle player myself. Thank you Al. It is a great program but you need to be able to get a profile into it to actually use it. You could keep adjusting ring diameter but not a great way to get a shape.
      Segment Pro gives you designs to start with and you can adjust them. But I kind of forget that I even have the program because I just do not use it.
      Great for getting started I suppose.

    Hi Gary! Like others, I didn’t know you were under the weather. I’m very glad to see you’re recovering. This process is fascinating but I have to tell you a short story. I was a science major in college and university. Physics , organic chemistry and biology were what I was studying. When it came to lab work and writing my lab reports, I had to get my girlfriend (now wife) to do all the math for me. Sure as heck, I would screw something up in the arithmetic! All this is to say that as fascinated as I am by the process you showed us……well you get the idea!!
    Really looking forward to seeing the application of this design to the wood. Take care Gary. Be well.
    Cheers, Rick

    Gary, thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. I was so glad to see this, as I especially like your segmented pieces. It appears I may be like many of your other viewers (fans) who would like to give it a try but feel somewhat intimidated by it. How much time would you say you spend on the design phase (with the software) before heading out to the lathe? Finally, I hope you're feeling better soon and ready to turn cartwheels (or, failing that, another masterpiece). 😉

      Thank you very much Grant. What you saw me do there was about all the time with the software. I did spend a few minutes making that first sketch. But it does have straight lines. If there is a curve or more I would say it all can be done in under an hour.
      Feeling good right now but I never could do a cartwheel so I will pass on that LOL.
      I will be doing a turning pretty soon.

    That was excellent, Gary! I knew it wasn't rocket surgery, but I've never seen it in such a visual way, watching the calculations and changes happen in real time. Much more helpful than the hand drawn graph paper sketches. But, you use what you have. I could've used some software to help with a project design the last few days, but it's a rough one with plenty of room for modification along the way. Still, I'll be indexing holes and spacing them ideally would've been easier with proper apps. I should look into the ones you've suggested. Great video for those unfamiliar with segmented turning.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      Thank you Jay. I leaned how to do it all on paper at work. We had to add extra stock to the inside and outside of the segments so we could turn them to exact dimensions. So this software made sense the first time I used it.
      Have fun with your project.

    Awesome introduction to how you would plan a segmented turning, Gary. You’ve almost talked me into getting Woodturnerturner Pro. Almost! I don’t know that I’m ready to do that but it does occasionally enter my mind. I’m not sure if I’m too old or just too cheap but it’s not in my immediate plans. I still like drawing it out on grid paper.
    I’m very happy that you’re feeling better, buddy. Glad to know that you’ve come through it. OK. Take it slow and easy until you’re ready to get back to full speed.
    Take care,
    …..Gord

      Gord, Woodturner Pro isn't very expensive. And it's a one time expense. No annual renewal fees like some software. But the real advantages are: 1. You can easily make changes to the design. Not only shape but segment pattern design. 2. All the calculations are done for you. And if you do make a design change everything is automatically recalculated. I've been using it for over 30 years and haven't found anything better. I'm not part of the Woodturner Pro team, I just like it and think you will too. 😀😀

      I’m with you Gord, pencil and paper for my simple designs. That’s how I learned from Malcolm Tibbetts. The math is very simple. For complicated designs I’m using Segment Pro

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      Thanks Gord. Well all the patterns I built at work using segments were done with the basic grid style method but without the grids. I would layout the shape from customers drawings and then choose segment thickness. Some were 1.75 inches thick. With edge lengths up to 20 inches. So big stuff. Nothing wrong at all with the method. .
      You could always do the 30 day trial which is what I did. Problem is after trying it you want it and then it will go back to being too cheap LOL. I know that was my problem so I talked about it 24/7 till she said OK BUY IT ...lol. Just kidding
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  Рік тому

      Hi Greg, as I mentioned to Greg as a wood pattern maker I learned how to lay out segmented shapes using what is basically a grid method without the grids. And these were very complex designs. No such thing as Woodturner Pro back in those days. If you check out my thumbnail I am turning a pattern about 4 foot in diameter that was glued together using that method. A great way to do it.

However, my problem I have is the actual cutting of the segments as I don't have the "Wedgy" setup to cut segments because, buying them gets real pricey as I have to get them from abroad and I can't find anyone making them in South Africa. Have tried a few methods in cutting them, but it never works out. I have found someone thats willing to try and make me wedgies, the problem again there is to find the dimensions it should be.
