- I turn a smaller version of a segmented vase that I did.
It was made easy with the very accurate segment stop that I made.
Smaller can be very impressive. This one is full of chatoyance in the Padauk, Maple and Sapele that I used. Wenge was used for the bottom and the top.

Hi Gary, I just started following you. I’m a newbie to turning. I have done Wood Carving for a couple of years but due to arthritis. In my hands I’ve gone to Wood turning or at least I’m going to try. I absolutely love the way you explain the speed that your turning the tools that you are using, that is so helpful to Turner like me. I really love the vase that you did and I’m think I’m going to try to do one myself.

Thank you Phil. The jig is my version of a few others I have seen. I have not seen a foot print this wide and I knew it would really help. And it does not get in any way on that side of the blade.
Honestly I wasn't sure the Sapele and Padauk would work but with my slight color blindness they looked so close without finish on them. But with finish it was just what I was hoping for.(I get in heated discussions with the wife that I am wearing a blue shirt and she says its purple LOL.)

Thank you Bill. Seems to be a lot of different stops made. This was my take on it. I like it a lot more than I thought I would.
I have been making fine adjustments tapping the rip fence a little at a time and it worked. That is how we adjusted the fence at work.
But it is the cats meow or the dogs bark.

I'm glad you enjoy making segmented pieces, Gary. I can appreciate the amount of work that goes into it. But for myself, I still enjoy the turning too much, and am less interested in sanding and finishing that I'm not sure I'd be satisfied with the amount of work that goes into creating piece relative to the amount of turning. I know I enjoy watching and learning from your skill.
Thanks Jay and segment work is not for everyone. It is kind of in my system. I would say 99.9% of the turned patterns I did at work were segmented or glued up in one fashion or the other. They were way bigger than this so there was lots of turning time. But it is also the type most people would not like. They had to be turned to exact dimensions. This takes the interest for the artist/turner interest away.
I like all types of turnings and love just turning a block of wood.
I have one for you next week that I think you will love. But it did take....well I will let you wait and see.

Beautiful. I enjoy your segmented turnings. The preparations, turning and finishing. I do not have a lathe, but I made a segmented round urn and told a cousin that my best friend's ashes were in it. They knew each other well. Actually, it holds a bunch of beads and string for my granddaughters to use to make necklaces. Haha. The urn looks good but nothing like yours. Awesome work. Came out very nice! Love your jig works really good. When I use rubber bands I made a board about 13x13 out of MDF and drew rings of several sizes and drilled holes in the rings for 4d finish nails to put the bands on . I put down wax paper and put the nails trough the paper keeps it clean and glue doesn't stick and pull nail out to release band to ring . I also have Woodturner Pro love it. Thanks Gary
Thank you very much Roger. Many years ago my left hand/wrist got banged up. If I can hook the rubber bands around the piece it is not problem. But trying to hold them open does not work so well. I like to be able to clamp them flat in the press then put the rubber bans on.

Beautiful pieces. I like the angled wood next to the table saw blade to keep the pieces rolling away from the blade.
I must say you have a lot more patience than I do in order to put the segments together. 👍🏾

What I do is start a little assembly process.
I cut enough for 2 or 3 rings. Move over to the bench to glue them.
While the glue dries I glue one on the piece and start the process all over. If anything it breaks things up and keeps it from boring.

Where do I start. That is a sweet little vase, I love it!! The cutting jig is something I should have made years ago.
But all the years of adjusting the table saw fence at work got me good at getting on the dimension I needed.
For segments this is perfect.
Not sure if you noticed but the plastics pipe has a cut in it that allows it to be placed over the chuck with work in place. Or take it off if you are buffing between coats.

Another nice job, and love the wood combinations. I might just modify my stop to measure the same as yours. At present I am using a 10-32 screw to addjust the segment and it takes a few tries to get it right. Your method lookks much easier. Shoulder is coming along well.
Thank you Paul. Been going to make one for a long time. I had thought about using a treaded rod. But it would be slow to go from a small size to a longer one. This is quick. In the pasted I just used the rip fence with a block clamped on it. I got pretty good with it but this way I did not even have to measure the first cut to see if it was good.

I could have cut the strips out of wood or HDPE. But what I did here that you could not see is in the middle I had a place for a screw but it was split in the middle so it would spread and get a nice fit. Same on the ends.

I may have to copy your jig since the one I built from plans from a unnamed web site just doesn't provide accurate cuts. Your jig looks much more stable because of its width.

Hi 👋, Gary, I hope you are keeping safe and well, this looks like another great piece of art, I don’t finish watching it yet, but over the last week or so, I’ve been looking at your curved segment making jig, that you made about two years ago, I made the jig with using the parting tool to cut the rings, which worked out fine apart from me messing up the first one, But I’m sure I left you a message, I’ve just gone back to watch it again, you making the jig but cannot see the comment I left, I’m trying to find out if you want to make a larger segment, is there a formula to use to change the size of the bowl you’re going to end up making, regards Phil from the moulin France.

How coincidental is that.....?? I just downloaded Woodturner Pro (Segment Pro and Laminator Pro too) today and have already designed my first big segmented project (384 segments) and have cut some segments already too. Gorgeous piece Gary. I think it’s great that you go into such detail on your process of creating your projects. I really like your stop jig, it looks a lot like the jig that originally goes along with the design with the wedgie sled but that looks like it works a lot better and would be more accurate. I thought of putting a fine threaded rod that moved a given amount for each rotation but that is more work going from a smaller size to a long size segment.
I could have fasten a digital caliper to the jig but this works just fine.

Nice vase! I really like the jig you made. I’m impressed with the many creative jigs you have made and used. I’m curious to know how you attached the chuck to the tailstock. I have seen other turners do the same thing but none have said what type adapter they use. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Best Wood Tools makes a chuck insert for my Super Nova II chuck with a 3/4-10 internal thread that screws directly on my One Way live center. I use it on almost every piece I turn.
Thank you Randy. I use an adapter that fits the taper in the tailstock and is threaded 1x8 . I just happen to have a couple that size from a former lathe. If you wanted to use this yo hold flowers (and water) how would you go about that? Would you seal the wood? Maybe use an insert?
Its a beautiful design amd I'd love to give it a try myself!

That's really nice! I finally finished my first segmented bowl. Made of pine to keep the cost down. It's definitely not perfect, but I sure learned a lot for the next one. I use progecad, an AutoCAD work alike. Why? because I'm familiar with it as I used it extensively as a tool maker/die designer before retirement desinging progressive dies.

I have a Bridgeport CNC mill so the CAD program is mostly for that.
I worked as a wood patternmaker and am familiar with tool and die makers. We worked with some now and then.

Do you clean the inside up of the lower rings at the same time. Very nice project.
Yes I turned the inside before I glued the next ring on. I should have pointed that out but I think I showed that once I got farther up.

Another great segmented turning Gary. Question: what blade do you use for ripping the strips and for crosscutting the segments. Also like the depth stop and your segment sled. Thanks for the videos, please keep them coming. BTW, do you have plans for the jigs? Cheers, Tom
Thank you Tom. The blade I rip the strips with is a 40 tooth Diablo 10 inch blade. I use a 60 tooth for the cross cutting of them.

Yes they are carbide. I like them a lot.
I have also used the Avanti 60 tooth and they work fine.
I’m curious, could you cut the segments with a compound angle so it would look like either diagonal lines or maybe a spiral instead of the stair step look you’ve created here? I like what you did I’m just wondering if it’s possible to do those other things as well. I’d imagine you would want to make it a bit bigger though gluing those tiny pieces and getting pressure in multiple directions would be an exercise in creativity in itself.
Yes you can cut the joints like you mention and I have done that.
As far as gluing when I put them in the glue press that holds them down. I just let them sit till they tack up.

Very nice. That's one I'd like to have in my curio cabinet.
I do have a question, do you use a standard 1/8" blade in your table or a thin kerf? It seems there'd be a lot of wood lost using a 1/8" blade when you have so many small pieces.
Thank you John. I use a standard width blade with 60 teeth. For me that works best for all segment cutting.
The segments on this one were narrow and not very long. But on a longer cut I think with wider blade does a better job.
On a harder wood you can get a deflection which will ruin the segment and thus not using less wood.
But those are my thoughts and experiences.

The rails on the bottom can be made from wood or HDPE would be better. Or 3D print them. I did that because it is fun

Do you polish the Deft lacquer after it dries or do you get a shine you like without that?
Good question Gary. I buff it with the fine scotch brite and that leaves a nice finish. Most of the time I do use the Acks product at the end. That will give it that little bit of extra that I like on segments.

Hi, I follow your videos from Italy which are very interesting. I would like to ask you for advice, I have started to make bowls from a table but I have great difficulty cutting the circles, the biggest problem is that I cannot find a thin and small cutter that does not heat up too much when it turns, to me it immediately turns black. I use a 3mm one, can you advise me of a seller where to find it. Thank you.

If you are talking a bowl from a board like I do then I use a parting tool that is 2mm wide and 240mm tall.
I am guessing your parting tool is much taller and that is where the problem is.

I like the smaller vase best That is just my opinion. I am having trouble with Padauk, bleeding on the Maple. I am getting dust on the Maple and I can't get all of it off. Any suggestions?

So you sand and then try and blow the dust off and it will not come off? Compressed air is the best.
I have not had that issue. The only thing that works for me is to blow it off and then do an overspray of lacquer on. Do not let it get wet. That locks in the Padauk. After 2-4 times you can then spray it on wet and build up your finish.

The only time I used Paducah was on a rifle stock for a grip cap and a forend tip it was claro Walnut and I put a eighth in spacer of holly and used a oil finish I thought it was rose wood it blead and almost made the holly the same color as the Paducah broke my heart
That is a shame. Did you end up sanding it out? I have had great luck sealing the Padauk with light coats of lacquer sprayed on.
Off topic: love your chuck cover/protector. Will have to cut one for me! Distance setter good. Did you skip the turning of the bottom section inside, or just not show it? Good either way. Very nice final results.
Thanks Valerie. Chuck cover is very simple. At one time I wrapped paper around the chuck and tapped it. That was too much work.
Had the pipe and wanted a way to put it on with removing the work. Simple band saw cut and it worked out fine.
I turned everything on the inside. I would turn the inside before gluing more rings on. I must not have shown the first few of them.
