Kaylee - I think this is probably the best information I have heard in regards to watering. I always see people ask and your answer of It really just depends... is completely correct but you also go over why. Great job!! Loved this video!
Kaylee I'm only a minute almost 5 on your video and what excellent advice about watering. To me it's sort of intuitive when a plant needs watered and after you have it for a little while you understand its needs and if you do a little research understand it even better. But some people are new to plants and they really don't have a clue how to water and they're scared the plants going to die so they tend to over water. So you have explained this in such a great way I'm a retired teacher and I taught for 32 years and substituted for 13 and it always amazed me new teachers and how they don't understand how to really teach if someone doesn't understand something like one of the students in math maybe he's not understanding triple digit multiplication or division or something. And they were so bright they got straight A's never struggled to learn anything top of their class but have no clue on how to teach. I had to explain to my children my students that the way I and my paycheck is not to present something and see if they understand it but if they don't understand something to teach them in a way that they come away with oh now I get it! And you are doing such a great job explaining the nitty gritty part of watering which is one of the most important parts of having house plants or even of gardening. Come to my channel on UA-cam everyone I want to see comments that's what I look forward to seeing every day take care Kaylee great job!!
Just received a Philodendron Rojo Congo in a plant trade! I already have a heartleaf, so it's nice to have variety. I'm absolutely in love with this new baby. Thanks for the video!
Thank you. Recently I am in love with the philodendron plants, their larger leaves is so beautiful. This video is exactly what I need. I do have some philodendron plant. I will use the #3 to determine if they need water 💧. Sometimes it's gone dry too long, cause I am not sure when to water, losing leaves turned yellowish. ❤
I dont care what anyone says. There is so much to be learned from you. They cannot progress because their hate keeps them from learning. This is the beginning video of me binge watching all of yours while I'm in the greenhouse. I hope you get so big, they cant even see you. You deserve it. Much love
Can I just say that if you made a video, that was just like “with monsteras I wait for the moisture meters to read __, and with peperomia I wait for it to read ___ and with skindapsus” like, just tell me all of the moisture read levels you wait until to water. Because... there is so much conflicting info.
Besides buying a cool mist humidifier which brought my humidity level up into the 60s this winter and the house temperature was 68 degrees and felt Pleasant because of the high humidity level you also can boost the humidity by grouping your plants together because they give off water they transpired as they do their thing photosynthesis to make their food the light shining on the green leaves... we all know about humidity trays and misting but grouping plants together and that cool mist humidifier are the best ways to help your plants I think and I'm sure you agree Kaylee you are giving excellent points and that's why everyone loves your videos
*makes plan to check all roots and mix up new potting medium* I love how helpful your videos are. You’re adding to my shopping list but also making sure I kinda know how to care for the plants!
Philodendron are fairly overwater friendly I have found so great for people who are just getting started and are too scared to let the plant soil go bone dry between watering! The key though is clay pots, in which water evaporates much faster
I've never had any luck with those probes I find there are very and accurate at least with the soil pH as far as watering is concerned I just go to my plant room and say hey who needs water and whoever yells back me can I give them water just got to listen to your plants they do talk
Liz Cowen Thank you, Kaylee, for all this detailed knowledge - I am a beginner! I bought whatever I found on a tube stock site here in Australia. Both are loving life near my north facing window (southern hemisphere). New shoots on both! One is a P. Rojo Congo and the other is a P. Silver Sword. I've a lot to learn!
Thank you so much for explaining your water numbers. I’d been debating on s moisture meter for a while now, and I just watched another one of your videos where you listed numbers for watering specific plants but didn’t knw what you meant. Your videos are so extremely helpful!
Note: *Plantmeter* Stick your Plantmeter near the plant not just anywhere in the pot. The roots are more concentrated near the plants stem so you want to make sure that the values are ok at this location. Don't push it down till it reaches the bottom. 3/4 is better to do the reading otherwise it will pick up some trapped moisture at the bottom of the pot but you want to know the moisture of the soil. Depending on your water quality: You do need to check the pH! The pH is very important to be right if not your plant will suffer or die. Some plant are very tolerant but others have a very small spectrum sometimes just +-0,5pH. So look that up for your specific plant and check your soil. *Humidifier* Don't use usual humidifiers with regular tap water! Again this depends on your tap water but: Your tap water has many different substances dissolved in it. All these things get thrown into the air and they will stick to every surface including your plants leaves. In extreme cases it could even block pores on your plant. My whole room had really dense white dust because I didn't know about this issue. Use destilled or osmosis water. But you should have access to pure water anyway if you are caring for some expensive philodendrons.
I’m loving your videos! All your background settings are absolutely beautiful! I would love to see a video on how to tell the difference between a Philodendron Rojo Congo and a Black Cardinal. I supposedly bought one of each today, but they look the same to me.
Excellent information about watering your plants are killed by water than any other means of death! One product I use and it's sold here in America at Lowe's but not at Home Depot is a product called... Soil moist. It's little polymer crystals that absorb water. Sort of like how a baby's disposable diaper works there's a polymer in that diaper but that polymer has to stick together and stay Ooey and gooey as it absorbs moisture just in case the baby is toddling around and it's little pamper and it gets a hole in you don't want little chunks of stuff falling out on the floor. But the polymer and soil moist stays a crystal it doesn't cling to another Crystal. Since it absorbs 50 times its weight in water a spoonful in a large pot can absorb a lot of water and hold and suspension until a plant needs it. I think it's great especially plants that are in clay pots for plants that are outside on the patio in pots or in hanging baskets. Hot dry weather can dry them out quickly and then add some wind to the day and you're going to have wilted and dying plants very quickly in the summer. But that extra bit of moisture the soil moist crystals hold helps the plant from becoming dehydrated in wilted so quickly without making the soil soggy. Do not buy Miracle Grow potting soil with that polymer in because it's not the same polymer it's a cheaper polymer probably like what's in Pampers. You can't use too much of this in a pot. I recycle my potting soil and am I big huge thought that I mix half peat moss the Stay Green brand from Lowe's it has a little bit of fertilizer in and Miracle Grow or stay green brand potting soil from Lowe's which has a bit of fertilizer in and I mix that with recycled orchid bark for my orchids some shredded up sphagnum Moss from repotted orchids and any recycled potting soil from healthy plants. I mix it all up together along with some osmocote summorum castings and the most important ingredient of all I think is soil moist crystals! Because these crystals last 4 or 5 years or maybe longer sometimes there's some extra soil moist crystals in my potting soil and I don't realize it. If we get a heavy rain sometimes my pots look like they're growing clear chunks of Jell-O. It doesn't hurt the plants cuz the soils not soggy I just take those extra chunks of Jell-O and add them 2 the pot I mix my potting soil in or into the bag of potting soil. I think this would also help anyone who tends to over water their plants because it absorbs the excess water in the soil and keeps it from getting mushy an Uzi and keeps the plant from thinking it's growing in a swamp. All of my plants love having this in the soil mix. I take a lot of coleus cuttings in the spring so that I can have lots of coleus plants without having to buy lots of coleus plants... In fact if you come to my UA-cam channel which is Kathleen Murphy and add the word coleus to the search engine you will see the hundred or so cuttings that I made into hanging baskets and pots this past spring I did a whole video on them... And I'm going to do an update on them and the coleus I grow from seed! But the coleus don't like to dry out and they transition well from water routes to dirt roots with the soil moist in the pot. In the fall after the frost hits and I pull up all the dead coleus plants the roots are still sort of alive and they're clinging two little bits of the soil moist crystals those roots find those crystals and just stay there and suck out water whenever they need it. I think it's the greatest invention ever. Besides the water feature I think it aerates the soil and helps the roots get oxygen because the expansion and contraction of those crystals keeps the soil loose. The soil does not get compacted like it can sometimes get after a while. So come to my UA-cam channel it's Kathleen Murphy as the word coleus philodendron house plants are orchids along with my name and the search engine and you'll find me. My channels only about a month old I'm 70 years old and this is a whole new world to me. I've Loved plants and gardening all my life got rid of the cable TV and UA-cam has become my entertainment but it's also become a way just share what I know about plants and learn from other plan A holic's! I love love love this channel and what a great entrepreneur Kaylee is and an inspiration to all of us.
I love philodendrons! I have so many but my Brasil is the only one that hasn't given me any trouble. I've had it about 6 months and it's doubled in size. Thanks for the video!
Thank you! Really great video! I like philodendrons. So this is helpful. I had a scandens with tiny leaves, hardly watered it, stayed in medium light. Then I moved & it got terrible gnats!! ...so I put it outside in the sun & rain in spring & lots of it died off. I brought it back inside in a northeastern windowsill and it surprisingly popped out tons of new BIG leaves. Like the size of my hand! Now it’s in a nice hanging pot in my warm south facing front living room about 6’ away from the window...and we are loving life together 😂 What a neat experience I had with it. You’re right it doesn’t like a lot of water to run through during watering. Just a bit to moisten everything is fine. I feel like me and my plant went through a ton and now I understand it so much more. I would like to see a video about your soil recipe. I would also like some eye candy of all your philodendrons possibly in the room and light situation you have them in. I like to see plants in videos but it would be really helpful to see them where they are actually growing. Thank you!! Sorry for the long message. Have a great day.
Hey Kaylee! If you see this, could you please one day do a video on philodendron Hastatum? I haven’t seen much about them and I think it is just such an amazing plant that it should be covered more in depth. I absolutely love your videos!
Thank you SO much for such an in-depth, timely and incredibly useful video!! I had purchased a moisture meter after watching one of your videos and, as soon as I watched this, went to Amazon and ordered a couple of hygrometers! Someone has already asked (and you kindly answered) my question in the comments about my Gloriosum. The two leaves it has seem to be getting a bit yellow and the new leaf is taking forever and a day to unfurl. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and passion in your videos-can’t wait for the next one!!
I just purchades a Philodendron Melanochrysum and as you were listing the relatively easy philodendrons, i was like "OH GOD PLEASE KAYLEE SAY MELANOCHRYSUM!" hahaha.. i have a prince of orange, that has grown so so well in my care, when i received it, it was so beat up but it's grown 3 new leaves since my care. I also have a neon philodendron hederacium, and philodendron cordatum. I just love Aroids. I love watching your videos.
I have the same moisture meter and have had some issues with hugely inaccurate readings for some soils. This caused me to almost kill a couple of plants because it was reading much higher than the soil actually was. Because they use electrical condictivity to measure moisture, soil v content can affect them so use with caution!
Kaylee - PLEASE do that video about soil mixes. The one thing I feel like I still have no clue about is how and why different soil mixes are worth purchasing
PLEASE PLEASE DO A VIDEO LIKE YOU SAID REGARDING THE AROID MIXES FULLBLOWN, showing us like what you adjust for what reasons so we know what to look out for. I have 4 philodendrons: pink princess, painted lady, billitae, splendid.
Imo as long as your plant is being kept at the right temp and light and putting on new leaves you can fertilize in winter and it probably wants it. I do agree with going half strength however. I think if the plant is putting on growth then it does not know it's winter:) beautiful plants btw!
Another awesome video, thank you, I hope I am not to late, I have a limp and yellowing leaf on my philodendron speciosum, overwatered AND sitting in water... I moved it inside after transplanting it and watered it through, I didn't have a tray for underneath it yet so I put it in a plastic saucer type thing, it held the water longer I guess...
Thank you for this video! I just received a black and gold philodendron start and the top of the soil is looking dry so I need to double check when it should be watered. The scheduled watering things drives me a lityle crazy! 😬 Im like "Cmon, people. At the very least let's not forget that water evaporates faster when it's hotter or when the air is dryer. 😂". Ive seen so many people online hate on moisture meters....but my skin sensitivity fluctuates with my health concerns and my finger tips have a partial loss of sensation. Even after growing plants for 4 years I still feel like Im still guessing when it's appropriate to water. I think I will get a moisture meter!
Like your Alocasia drama at plant shop! Been in that situation before . Now if I want something I go get it and not think if I buy it or not. You know what happen when you come back its gone!!
Wow, thank you for asking! I’ve been wanting to tell someone, but nobody I know is interested haha. I bought a Florida beauty, a moonlight, an autumn (I think it’s a hybrid), gold cordatum and a black cardinal ☺️☺️☺️ have you had any of these before? Any tips would be great, thank you ☺️
@@JessaWabbit wow, lucky! You've got a lot of beauties on your hands 😍 I've only got a tiny baby gold cordatum and it seems to really appreciate humidity and bright, indirect lighting. I also have him in well-draining soil. Honestly this video is probably perfect for all of them, care-wise!
I’d love to see a video on easy philodendrons. They’re currently too intimidating for me, but I’m hopeful for the future. 😊 Thanks for all the informative videos!
Honestly I would love a dedicated soil video! I am constantly changing my soil since I’ve had some of my more fickle plants give out to root rot because the soil just holds the water way way way too long!
Moist moist moist 😂😂 - great video. Appreciate your talks, as always. I’m curious, you’ve noted that your philodendron’s sulk when you flush water through the pot...do you think that’s a function of the potting media maybe not being airy enough for the plant type? Like maybe adding a bit more perlite would help prevent too much wetness? The function of flushing water through the pot has a lot of advantages like removing salt and toxin buildup from the root area, so I have a personal affinity for that method of watering because my tap water is high in minerals (250ppm). I only have a Philodendron melanochrysum and Choco Red, but they seem to be okay with the weekly drench. I use orchid bark, perlite and charcoal at about 70% and the remainder is peatmoss.
This was just the most informative video! Thank you. Me and my husband just love u and ur channel. Can you please do a care video for antiriums!!! Would be so thankful!
Ive just started collecting some philodendron. They are probably some of my favorite so far! Question though, how far down are you placing the Moisture Meter for the reading? Thank you for your videos!
Thank you so much for doing this video! Philodendrons are hands down my favourite kinds of plants because they come in so many different shapes and forms! I bought a hygrometer after watching your calathea video, and it's made such a difference - apparently I can tolerate much lower humidity than tropical plants can :D How do you maintain high humidity in the winter without developing mold issues? I get lots of condensation on my windowsills, and just wiping away residual moisture isn't enough.
This is great Kaylee! Very informative!! I’d like to find out more about care tips for variegated monstera and difference between variegated monstera borsegiana and deliciousa. Thank you!
I have a Pink Princess, it's my first philodendron and it's beautiful and healthy- but it's getting leggy. I'll be moving to a better place in the next month, but it hasn't been getting a lot of light or humidity where I am right now and it's been turning out smaller and smaller leaves and less verigation. I'd like to remove the small leaves, since they aren't very nice looking and it would probably be good for the plant to be pruned at this point. However it's also growing on a single vine, so I'm afraid to prune it since I don't know where I can prune it to encourage new growth. Maybe it's unrealistic but I'm afraid it'll just stop growing if I do it wrong. Do you have any tips for that? I'll also be moving all of my plants from north facing windows to north/east facing windows when I move, so I'll be getting morning sun. Do you have tips for acclimating my plants so they don't burn? I accidentally burned my Monstera trying to acclimate it to morning sun from ambient day light before, and lost a lot of its large growth, so I'm very nervous.
Thank you so much, I was waiting for your Philodendron guide :D ! I would love to see more videos about them. I would also love to see videos about some basic stuff like how to choose pots, how to set up a nice growing area for our babies or even what are the different type of soil and how to choose the perfect mix ^^ . Anyway, I really love your job here on YT and on the Rare Plant Shop :) ! Thank you :D
If you want an affordable Philodendron with interesting leafes, maybe you could look into the Philodendron Pedatum. The shape of the leafes is very similar to the Florida Ghost, it´s just solid green and about 1/10 of the price (at least here where I live, which is Germany), so a really nice Philo to start with :)

Much love
I feel so warm inside ☺️ your videos are so wholesome and just what the internet needs thanks for the information!
I love how thorough and clear your explantion is! Ty
I'd love to see both videos, the aroid potting mix and easy philodendrons! 😊
Philodendron are fairly overwater friendly I have found so great for people who are just getting started and are too scared to let the plant soil go bone dry between watering! The key though is clay pots, in which water evaporates much faster
Easy philodendron please please please! I love them! 😍
I hadn't even considered humidity with my philodendron, thanks for mentioning that!
Charming. Watchable and full of expert advice..I'm just starting these plants...and here goes...the addiction has started. Thanks again. 😊
Philodendron are one of my favourites spieces, this is so helpful! Yay, best part of friday!
I just got a philodendron verrucosum today! Perfect timing!🥰
Philodendron is LOVE
Also I SPY AN ADASONII VARIGATA??!?
I've never had any luck with those probes I find there are very and accurate at least with the soil pH as far as watering is concerned I just go to my plant room and say hey who needs water and whoever yells back me can I give them water just got to listen to your plants they do talk
Yes to ALL the philodendron videos 😬🙌🏻
Thank you for this video ! I have several typical philodendrons but recently got the Gloriosum and a Mamei and this video is so helpful 🙌🏻💚
You are just awesome. I love your videos and I watch them every chance I get. HUGE FAN!!!!
First timer, you are adorable. I love that you time stamped very nice touch.
Thank you so much for explaining your water numbers.
I’d been debating on s moisture meter for a while now, and I just watched another one of your videos where you listed numbers for watering specific plants but didn’t knw what you meant.
Your videos are so extremely helpful!
I would love a dedicated easy philodendron video 😃
Note:
*Plantmeter*
Stick your Plantmeter near the plant not just anywhere in the pot. The roots are more concentrated near the plants stem so you want to make sure that the values are ok at this location. Don't push it down till it reaches the bottom. 3/4 is better to do the reading otherwise it will pick up some trapped moisture at the bottom of the pot but you want to know the moisture of the soil.
Depending on your water quality:
You do need to check the pH! The pH is very important to be right if not your plant will suffer or die. Some plant are very tolerant but others have a very small spectrum sometimes just +-0,5pH. So look that up for your specific plant and check your soil.
*Humidifier*
Don't use usual humidifiers with regular tap water!
Just a warning - your description has the lighting timestamp as 16:05 when it's 6:05. Love your videos and thank you for all the lovely tips!!!
Thank you! Fixed :)
i’ve been hesitating to adopt a melanochrysum but i guess i’m going to get it soon! thank you Kaylee!
I’m loving your videos! All your background settings are absolutely beautiful! I would love to see a video on how to tell the difference between a Philodendron Rojo Congo and a Black Cardinal. I supposedly bought one of each today, but they look the same to me.
I'm SO glad to hear that the melanochrysum is an easy going variety. It's my #1 wish list plant 💚
A year ago I didn't own one Orchid and now I own over 30 come visit me and click subscribe and like but even if you don't do that please leave me a comment and let me know what you think about what I posted and how maybe I could do a better job except I'm stuck with filming with my cell phone right now I don't have a computer I don't have internet access so the only way I can post videos is to take them with my cell phone and upload! I love love love this channel and what a great entrepreneur Kaylee is and an inspiration to all of us.
I love philodendrons! I have so many but my Brasil is the only one that hasn't given me any trouble. I've had it about 6 months and it's doubled in size. Thanks for the video!
Besides from all the plant porn your hair looks gorgeous in this video👏🏻😍.
I love this video♥️
You should do a video on anthurium care !!
I water probe my plants every Wednesday’s and Saturday’s. If whoever doesn’t need water sat then they wait until wed. It works very well for me.
Hey Kaylee! If you see this, could you please one day do a video on philodendron Hastatum? I haven’t seen much about them and I think it is just such an amazing plant that it should be covered more in depth. I absolutely love your videos!
Istg u make the best videos, like I haven't finished the video yet but I already know its gonna be fantastic
Hi hello from Russia. Thanks for sharing this information. It's a pleasure to see you as well as to hear you 👍🤗
I'd love to show off my inherited red emerald philodendron, you can't seem to buy it anywhere
Picked up a Xanadu Philodendron today and I’m so excited!
Going trough a kaylee ellen video and adding at least 3 plants to your wish list
I love your videos I live in Belize (central america) where some of these philodendrons grows wild In our lush jungle .
I learn so much from your videos! I appreciate the effort you put into making the content. Thank you for sharing ❤️

Exactly!! Water when dry or when they give t the sign
Please do an in-depth video about soil mix!
Love your videos, please do an in-depth guide for Anthurium as well, thanks heaps Kaylee!!
Such a beautiful and professional video. Well hosted and just about the right amount of information. Glad I stumbled upon it.
"Full on hairy" :) absolutely love your videos. So informative, yet so down to earth :)
I love, love, love this video. Any videos about aroids are great. Thanks so very much. Much love and many blessings.
binge watched your videos, going to be broke for years now. you are awesome!
I just bought 5 philos, so this was very good timing and super informative ☺️
JessaWabbit oooh, what kinds?
Wow, thank you for asking! I’ve been wanting to tell someone, but nobody I know is interested haha.
I bought a Florida beauty, a moonlight, an autumn (I think it’s a hybrid), gold cordatum and a black cardinal ☺️☺️☺️ have you had any of these before? Any tips would be great, thank you ☺️
@@JessaWabbit wow, lucky! You've got a lot of beauties on your hands 😍
I've only got a tiny baby gold cordatum and it seems to really appreciate humidity and bright, indirect lighting. I also have him in well-draining soil. Honestly this video is probably perfect for all of them, care-wise!
Humidity seems to be a common theme for all these houseplants 😉 thank you for sharing! Best of luck with your philo also ☺️
Wow. This is such a good video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us! Love from Louisville Kentucky! (Yes I said that with much southern twang 😉)
Coming your way! 😜
NEW SUBSCRIBER here. New houseplant mama too. Always looking for guidance on how best to care for the plants I've adopted 🙂
I love Philodendrons and I loved this video 💙🌻
Thank you so much for doing this video! Philodendrons are hands down my favourite kinds of plants because they come in so many different shapes and forms! I bought a hygrometer after watching your calathea video, and it's made such a difference - apparently I can tolerate much lower humidity than tropical plants can :D
How do you maintain high humidity in the winter without developing mold issues? I get lots of condensation on my windowsills, and just wiping away residual moisture isn't enough.
This is great Kaylee! Very informative!!
I’d like to find out more about care tips for variegated monstera and difference between variegated monstera borsegiana and deliciousa. Thank you!
Omg My Beautiful Kaylee holaa from Puerto Rico i loooove your plant videos soooo much💚💚💚💚
I have a Pink Princess, it's my first philodendron and it's beautiful and healthy- but it's getting leggy.
I love the video!! Could you PLEASE do a similar video on the begonia maculata? Care, watering, propogating, soil and all the sweet stuff!!
If you want an affordable Philodendron with interesting leafes, maybe you could look into the Philodendron Pedatum. The shape of the leafes is very similar to the Florida Ghost, it´s just solid green and about 1/10 of the price (at least here where I live, which is Germany), so a really nice Philo to start with :)
i would love a soil video, this video was so amazing as I start my plant adventure.
First time here Kaylee
Good presentation for philodendron
Those water gauges are great, ive had it for years now👌 didi miss the media that philadendroms use??
I subscribed i moved from States in 2013 to here in the Philippines 😊the 🌿🌴plant lfe is awesome n im in paradise😁although i had a stroke 4 years ago now n barely do any gardening 😭 i am still crushed because of my stroke. I am 68 n was so looking forward to truly enjoying my retirement. Anyways
Been a pleasure seeing you here
Regards and best of health to you and yours
🇺🇸EXPAT MIKE IN THE PHILIPPINES. 😊🙏
This Video ist everything, thank you so so so SO MUCH
Your remarks are informative!! They are easy to grow. I have a few different ones.
Another amazing video! Thank you Kaylee!! I have a question on your humidifier...how do you clean it? I clean mine with vinegar but is there a better way to clean them for plant care? Also, can the moisture probes break? Mine seems to stay at 1 or 2, especially with an aroid mix and even after watering :/
