Neo cortex is one of my favorite crash bandicoot villains and he's a funny character. In twinsanity anyway. He acts as if he's a big and bad guy because he insults his underlings yet also gets insulted by uku uku. He's supposed to be super intelligent yet he's really incompetent and lacks common sense. In crash the huge adventure in the gba he shrunk the planet down to a holdable size but he does nothing and crash beats him anyway. Also is he even a doctor? This is just like eggman is there some evil doctor school or something?
About the contradictory statement, after the freak accident at the high school, maybe he was immediately transferred to the Academy of Evil when they realized how evil he was.
I can imagine that happening. As for Amberly's attitude towards him it hints at him being a bit of a flunky. Intelligent but incompetent. What I've always found interesting is Nina's statement of being the queen of the academy (most likely meaning top student). If what she said was true, at least to an extent, then that means Aku Aku wasn't wrong when he said she's smarter than him if she was able to be revered at the academy whereas cortex was viewed as a failure. Gotta feel sorry for Nina though. Forced into the academy and made to be evil against her will. I like to think that part of the reason she made the Bratgirls the way they were in Titans is so that she could actually have friends 😢
Here are my theory ideas. If Nina truly is his niece as the Twinsanity manual implies and in C.O.T. and M.O.M., then that would mean one of Cortex's siblings had survived the explosion somehow and got married and had a daughter (Nina). But for whatever reason she was abandoned and left in N. Cortex's care. Or maybe Cortex kidnapped his niece and raised her himself. He found out one of his siblings survived the explosion and are happily married and have a daughter. Jealous of his sibling's happiness and wanting revenge on his sibling for tormenting him years prior, he decides to kidnap Nina and raise her to be evil like him. Or maybe Nina was an orphan as a baby and maybe Cortex adopted Nina because he secretly wanted a kid and felt a bit lonely. He would have Nina address him as her uncle instead of being called dad. Maybe he didn't like the idea of being a dad, but being an uncle to her would be better and fitting for Cortex.
Lets merge the storyline. He is smart and evil enough for the two years credential in highschool and after chains of explosive accidents the Evil Academy successfully finds, enrolls and soon 'train' him, but only for a short time, likely kicked out for very bad behaviour on material thefts, which may explain how Cortex and Brio succeeds in building and further expanding their research in the Wumpa Islands. Around 8 as he used the Nuclear powerplant of the High School for his last experiment before he finally calls it quit and leave the school Wandering and lots of Arsony at around 1 years time, recruited and stealing resources from the Academy which prompted the 'vermin' comment as thief and his experiements still deemed unsuccessful. In the end, he may as well lie, to not only convince others of his youthful genius but also to throw others off his tracks if they try to find out more. Sounds like an evil genius con man to me, who finds himself being the butt of jokes and being belittled by others in the end due to him finding no real outlet to his emotions.
I'm pretty sure CTTR is the first time any of the characters had met Von Clutch, and Von Clutch only knows of the other characters because he's a fan of the series; even saying that he has all of their games. Of course, that explanation only brings up more questions like, "How can the Crash Bandicoot games exist within the Crash Bandicoot universe?"
In terms of voice actors, I always preferred Clancy Brown's more sinister and serious interpretation, but I also very much enjoy Lex Lang in the role. In terms of characterization, I also much prefer the serious interpretation from Crash 2 and 3. I do feel as though Cortex should occasionally be comical, this was present even in Crash 2 and 3, and him being even more comical than there can easily work, but I feel like Cortex is at his best when he feels like a genuine threat, rather than an incompetent goof. Crash himself is already a rather goofy and silly character. This works really well as a contrast for Cortex. The characters are able to play off each other in a way sorta like an inverted version of the relationship between Batman and the Joker, though obviously in a more light hearted and kid friendly way. I feel like this dynamic is what works best for the characters. Making Cortex too silly is kinda like making the Joker forget to laugh. It might be able to work as a standalone act, but it doesn't resonate very well when paired with the main character. Joker has to be an unpredictable laughing maniac to contrast Batman's serious, grounded in reality demeanor. Likewise, Cortex should be dominant and threatening to contrast Crash's immature, goofy, carefree attitude. The comedy therefore works best as a result of his failures, rather than the cause of them. Lines such as "...and a woman with nice, big, bags of ice for my head!" from the first ending in Crash 3 are memorable and hilarious because the comedy isn't overdone, and is expertly timed to when Cortex is vulnerable and defeated. It's comic relief to ease the tension of how serious he was up to that point, and isn't relying on incompetence as an excuse to laugh.
cortex strikes back is honestly my favourite game in the whole series. I know some people liked warped more but I really like the way he tried to act good but was really just a setup so crash could get the crystals and take over the world. it was so brilliantly done. you know what I mean?
I don't think Cortex was over used. If you disregard Titans and MOM, he actually grows as a character (not that he grows to be good, but he definitely has character development). In fact, he's really the only character to grow at all in the series, and I've always kind of seen the series as a story about Cortex, told from the point of view of (slightly above and behind) Crash. I'm definitely interested in seeing other villains, but they should never stop including Cortex.
Cortex could definitely have been in two different schools at the same age. He's aged twice, thanks to the time twister malfunctioning at the end of Warped.

I never understood how Cortex got so rich. In CTR games he has his own themed places, from castles to small islands. In the last time I checked his villain wiki, the bio box included one of his occupations as "Dictator". I can understand how Eggman is rich, because he basically runs a huge nation of mainly-robotic peons who work for him and run businesses like casinos. Cortex on the other hand usually had only a few henchmen and robotic lab assistants as guards, and other than the Titans games he didn't really have an army nor an actual "job". How then, was he capable of building space stations, blimps, and battleships on certain occasions? Beyond his scientific genius he wasn't that much of a money-maker, was he? Even his penguins tried to kill him in Twinsanity because he couldn't pay them.

To rule a chaotic world, he'll find a way to tame it through his force of will. All this stemming from a throwaway line in Tag Team Racing. If we assume it's part of the timeline, Cortex would have been around the minimal age of 18 when he fought in the army at some point after graduating the Academy of Evil and probably Nina may have been born while he was in his mid to late 20's. Surprised you didn't throw that in when you discussed his history.
What if Von clutch owned the circus cortex was born in or was a high class worker there that made fun of cortex. (a possible hint is that he came to CTR NF in the neon circus GP) And the reason he is a cyborg is he got very injured during the explosion of the circus but was able to survive and escape somewhere else and own a motor world park (were tag team takes place). In most cases when it comes to game histories, the in game canon is usually the story to go by. Especially since as a series goes on and changes alot of the "bible" can be overwritten. Game story takes precedent over the old book and pre-developement stuff.
