- Let’s go over the history of Nina Cortex! Neo Cortex’s niece has made some significant appearances throughout the Crash Bandicoot series. From playable to playing roles in the story, Nina Cortex remains to be quite a mysterious character. Nina Cortex’s latest appearance was back in 2019 during the Spooky Grand Prix of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.

I mean Cortex getting rid of her hands so that she no longer can play with animals-she can’t fell anyithing with those, and you have to wonder what was their relationship, was she physically abused ? Gotta think deeper about her backstory

I agree, it would be really cool to see Nina’s backstory explore more. Maybe Vicarious Visions could do something similar to Psychonauts and have Nina’s subconscious accessible to Crash and company. IDK, that’s how I would do it, if I were a game developer.
When they remade James Marsden's movie Hop with Sonic instead of easter bunny, I think they'd have made a more fitting movie with Crash Bandicoot. And that in mind, if Jim Carrey's character was called N.Cortex he would still pass without a single change.
There's a couple of things I would want in the sequel too. First, for cynical reasons I'd have him having cloned himself and have a hivemind across several bodies talking in stereo, just to excuse if later Jim Carrey quits the role. But more importantly, I'd make him have a single, cloned daughter of sorts, with the running gag that they act very loving but constantly badmouth each other, so this version of Nina has no concept of being mean. So her catchphrase is "I hate bandicoots!" because bandicoots are her favorite animal and she wants one as a pet, since her dad always talks about how horrible bandicoots are (that being Sonic, but in this version where he would have been Crash). She just thinks that hating means loving, because her only contact to civilization shows her love but only talks hatefully.

I’m more of a fan of the “secret” daughter theory, after all why would Cortex, who hates/killed his whole family, not only take in his niece but also care about her wellbeing and show so much pride in her achievements, even when her tried to usurp him. Besides if Nina does have a mysterious mother out there it could be a interesting story for her if she ever returned.
Also on the class picture with madam Amberley, Nina looks like she has stuck a photo of herself over someone else, possibly her mom. (Foreshadowing maybe?)

My sense is that later-era Crash makes some homages to classical Paramount monster movies and parodies like Young Frankenstein, so I would retro-fit the "uh, my... NIECE!" as a joke about Cortex forgetting his lines. BUT, he does see Nina as his daughter, which is why THAT was the mistake he made. I wouldn't put as much weight on a headcanon otherwise, but it's a way to build a picture about some vague canon and choose between contradicting depictions WHICH exactly should be the personality of these characters.
For example, it's hard to say what amount of that clown backstory is even applicable. But it makes more sense if it's taken in stride that Crash canon has this "script" which is meant as guidelines, on top of "facts" like Nina ACTUALLY being Neo's niece. The "fact" has to exist in a vacuum that "Nina is Neo's nice". But besides that, there can be the story that Cortex's whole family is dead, and then some his family might appear anyway. Think of it like being the public profile of a family of secret agents with fake identities. Except, in this case the stories exist as a device to bring in 4th wall breaks like in Mel Brooks movies.
With this line of thinking, and evidence from Crash of the Titans, the conclusion I arrived at is that Nina has meek personality and 'fear of success' complex. She may burst out to brag, to hide that she's afraid to try, even though when she bites the bullet she is quite competent. Interestingly she does not have a high degree of self-pity that USUALLY corresponds with that trait, and that makes her pretty admirable. That's in contrast to a character like Waluigi who IS very self-pitying.
Nina also doesn't show genuine gratification from success, OR disappointment from failure, which makes her low in neuroticism. She doesn't know what she wants, and responds better to social approval than objectively measurable success. With this it would make sense she won't hold grudges, and is quicker to blame herself than others, even if she's not at fault. However she would first prioritize avoiding blame, at the cost of others. It's a pretty interesting combination of traits, and surprisingly consistent, despite probably being just an accident of too many cooks.
You know I always found it weird that Nina never talked in twinsanity but in later games she talked all the time. I still find it strange to this day...
With time, I realize more that this franchise has so much compared to most hit cartoony gaming mascots.
Crash has a very bright future ahead!

Honestly I think it would be cool if they revamped her to be cortex’s daughter instead of niece idk just the idea of her rebelling against her father because of her love for animals would be a pretty cool concept like let’s say cortex wanted her to follow in his footsteps but we didn’t want that instead she wanted to be a nurse like you said in the video
AND perhaps she despises her father for having studied on animals unethically.
That would imply/prove that Cortex has had sex, and I don't know how I should feel about that. :T
Hacking was messed up about Nina's origin is that her uncle cut off her hands and replace it with robotic hands I do agree that the DS version of Crash of the Titans is more interesting because Nina teams up with crash I really do want her to return in Crash Bandicoot 4 as a playable character
If she's re-introduced, I wonder if she'll hold it against her uncle....

On the topic of Cortex having a surviving sibling who would be the mother or father of Nina, something that makes sense to me is that this sibling would be someone much more kind spirited than Cortex. Someone who wouldn't involve themselves in his evil schemes, and perhaps is even living in hiding from him. This could explain Nina being fairly ordinary at a young age, before meeting her uncle.
In regards to Nina's personality seeming to change over time, there's a chance that this is because of her circumstances constantly changing as she grows up. Before Cortex sought to influence how she was being raised, she seems to have been ordinary. Slowly but surely, she is pushed into a life of evil she never asked for, and can't seem to find any way to even do it on her own terms. She's unable to find any happiness in this lifestyle, and it just emotionally tears at her as she's left to the mercy of her uncle's impact on where and how she's being educated. She identifies him as the source of her torture, and the feelings of resentment slowly boil over as the years go by until finally she is put in a position to enact revenge against Cortex.
Perhaps her desire to kill Crash comes from a desire to surpass Cortex as a villain, to prove to him that she's better than him. She doesn't actually care about Crash one way or another, but she knows that he's a persistent thorn in Cortex's side that he is never able to defeat. Therefore, if she could pull it off, it would make her a better, more successful villain than him and she could rub it in his face. Perhaps her desire to surpass Cortex's villainy is part of her plans to get revenge on him. To crush him in every emotional way she can, foil his plans, and in general make him regret ever influencing her childhood. If she can't be happy, he doesn't deserve to be either because he did this to her, made her this way. It could be that's how she feels about the situation.

Yeah, I can agree on what you said, but even if she did kill Crash and surpass Cortex on every level as a villain, to what end would that gain her?

I'm not saying this to argue with you or anything, I do agree with the resentment towards him over all those years and showing him up, but just saying in general for her character wise, she wouldn't really gain anything other than being better than her uncle.
I really do hope as the franchise moves forward, that the Devs don't forget about that good part of what Nina use to be, and just retcon her character, like she always was that way, and wanted to follow in her uncle's footsteps,(when she did not have any say in the matter) removing any chance of an redemption arc.
I understand about keeping her as villain for now, but hopefully someday become a friend sometime later.
I see Nina as a redeemable character, having her stay permanently as villain would ruin good character development for her.

@@VongolaXZax Honestly her relationship with Cortex is so toxic by now (at least in the Titans/MoM timeline) she probably hasn't thought that far ahead. I agree though, I would like to see a new version of her that could become something of an ally of Crash and Coco, or at least something like an anti-hero.

The motivation of why her story is so inconsistent is because on who was her original creator and what happen to her copyright
In short, after scrapped for nitrokart her first appereance was sett for twinsanity, but vicarius went on don't give a fack and placed her inside crash purple
In both twinsanity and CP we understand (expecialy thanks to the cut contend and drawings that are unlockable)
that she was meant to be a "neutral" character, the "smug kid" of the situation, not only thanks to her bio, but again her drawings and facial expresions
Then TToxford "lost"(?) the rights of this character and a new team handel her, becamin titans and mutants, as you see
The character in those games is just "evil".... Nothin more or less, just evil
The new ctr seems to prefer an aproc of the titans and mutants....
Anyway, for what we know the "origianl" idea and concept of her is seen mostly in twinsanity, which thanks to the animations, themes, drawings and cut contend,
We understand that she wast meant to be "evil" but more on the "neutral"-evil side, a smug kid with a passion for animals, wants to have a decent aspect and does some "effeminate" move but still a metalhead, likes makes pranks but doesn't seem to have any attachement to the "evil-prank" sector

Not to mention Traveller's Tales Oxford had the idea for Cortex having a Daughter type figure since the early phases of Wrath of Cortex when it was called Crash Bandicoot Worlds, it was in the pitch that more recently got more of a look at thanks to GameHut.
What if she was his secret daughter, and the whole niece thing was just a ruse?
And she would be good if Cortex did not raise her, it makes the most sense, since that's what she was before he corrupted her into being evil.
Yeah if Cortex never got involved in Nina's life then she wouldn't be far off from being like Coco, personality wise and likely a valuable allie to the Bandicoots. Kinda like say with the Ninja Turtles and Shredder's Daughter which is a similar case to that.

It would be nice if the directors and writers ever decided to do a redemption arc, Nina would be nice.
But that's if they consider her character worth redeeming, which in my opinion she should be.
It would be simple for Crash and Coco just to get rid of those parts that Cortex place in Nina, and let her do the rest, but the better way for her, wanting to go back to being good, is if Crash and Coco showed her true friendship.
Listening to Vi in the video and looking at her character that's all she ever wanted, cause you know in order to draw a person out of darkness, is to have light in you and to let your light shine, drawing them out of said darkness. =')
Nina knows what good is and she should still remember how it felt to be good, so Crash and Coco showing friendship towards her, that she make her want to revert back to who she was and remove those parts Cortex placed in her.
The first step for wanting to change, is to "want" to change, and to be willing to change.
Changing isn't based on how you feel, but its all within your "will".
@@VongolaXZax very, honestly you could have Nina start out as bad following her dear daddy wherever he goes takes commands and whatnot, but slowly realizing who she really is and starts to question Neo's actions and eventually does her own thing, eventually teaming up with the Bandicoots, honestly she does have potential just like an animated series of Crash Bandicoot, maybe not the same, but yeah more Nina Cortex is cool with me. 👍😁

Ahhh, Nina Cortex.
To say that I love Nina is a BIG understatement. I enjoy her in every single title she's in and she looks absolutely perfect no matter how she dresses or in whatever game she's in. I'd also say that she's a little underrated In Crash Tag Team Racing. Her quotes and poses are amazing in that game (just like everyone else, heh) and I love the way she looks as well. In CTR:NF, all of her skins and recolors are equally perfect and tied with some others as my favorites in the game! And between her backstory , her many appearances, and having some mystery around her(especially in twinsanity), it'll be great seeing how her different aspects are further utilized in the future! This is a great video!
And, of course, I'll always love Nina~

For her history, I feel a bit sympathetic with her since she had a kind heart yet sent to become evil. I see her based on Frankenstein's creation.
Well, since the "freak explosion thing" was only in a character bible, and kind of contradicts actual game elements that otherwise work, I'd say the bible was retconned.
Unless the new timeline decides to go back to it :)

I do think they need to expand on Nina Cortex more as a spin off. There is some mystery to her that needs to be explained. She does have split personalities that need to be taken upon. I do think I see her more of as a neutral enemy from Mind over mutant up until now. But she's one character to watch out for

As far as I know, Neo said "daughter" because they have a really close relationship. Neo really loves her. Like she's his daughter. I found this information in Crash Mania but I'm not sure who said this. 🤔

I personally like the idea of Nina not wanting to be evil, and having a grudge against her fath- errr uncle for forcing her into an evil lifestyle. I thought it made her more interesting.
Great video vivi!,Nina has my favourite design of any character from the Crash series,i love the goth school girl style,hope that she continues with the Twinsanity style in future games,If Crunch is mentioned in Crash 4 i hope she is there too.

I'm all in for redemption stories, if the team ever decided to go that direction.
Technically she was brainwashed into being evil, so, if Nina was to let her "good self" that may still be in her come completely back, she would have a complete turn around.

She was taught to be evil and like it, she wasn't really be born that way, so there's hope.
Need a back story with her being good, and hopefully a sign of hope for redemption and coming back.

So long as they don't write Nina like in the Titan games. Radical wrote Nina as a typical "evil spoiled brat", and nothing else. In those games she's a pawn of cruel manipulating guys like Cortex and Uka Uka.

It is not that hard to make out Nina's personality from the console games (a helpful hint: ignoring mobile spinoffs IP owners outsource to unrelated developers will make things 100 times easier). Nina was quiet and wanted to mind her own business, like most kids. As she grew up and entered the late teenage years, she did what everyone does: rebelled against her authority figures, and tried to prove herself better. The personality "change" is not that strange when you remember people IRL do that too.

Theory: nina is cortex daughter.
I know i know but hear me out.
My theory is that cortex married a women from the academy (grew up togther) but unlike cortex she had a soft spot for animals. Anyways she discovered cortex experiements on said animals causing them to have a falling out and her leaving however during the fallout cortex finds out she was pregnant and not wanting the child be torn between the 2 cortex offers her a place with his family so they can help raise their child while he works (showing a softer side to cortex).
Anyways years later something happens and the family home gets destroyed by an explosion. Cortex arrives only to find his family dead but one.....he finds his very young daughter nina within the rumble but badly hurt. Cortex uses his mad science and fixes her up the best he can (arms and such). Cortex tries raising her like a father but finds himself more drawn to his work causing her to be watched by his minions. Then when the events of crash 1 happens cortex sends his minions to get crash but not wanting to leave his daughter alone he contacts the academy and offers to pay em extra to house, educate and take care of her but lies to them saying shes his niece to protect her from other rivals and bullying aince cortex wasnt well liked there.
Over time as she grew cortex would find time to visit kept up the lie of being her uncle as he couldnt bring himself to tell her the truth of what happen and not wanting to ruin what little relationship they had. Plus if she found out cortex is her father and the one responsible for leading to her mothers death she would use her high intelligence and become an enemy unlike any cortex has faced (maybe have her far worse than crash)
I figure this theory she can still be seen as his niece but in actuality she is cortex daughter that he kept secret to protect her from not only his rivals but to whom ever might of caused the explosion at their family home. (This could lead to another crash cortex team up and reveal a bigger threat)
Anyways its a head canon theory i was working on. Any ideas to add to it is always welcomed

I wanna give Neo a Worse Guardian of the Century award for chopping the hands off a toddler and replacing them with steel ones so she'd crush any small cute animals she wanted to pick up/pet and then sending her to a school where the headmaster abuses her and the students bully her

My headcanon for Nina: Nina Cortex is Neo’s niece and daughter of Neo’s “parasitic twin” (see CTTR Cortex’s quotes) who had survived the incident of he and his brother’s past(see Neo Cortex Wiki page, history section). Nina was raised to be a good girl, but that all changed when a fire took away not just her parents, but her hands as well. When she was taken in by her uncle Neo, she learned that the reason he became a supervillain was that since he came from a family of circus clowns, the people around him don’t believe that he would achieve anything in the scientific field. Feeling bad for her uncle, she declared that she’ll help him take over the world and requested for powerful tricked out cybernetic hands instead of the originally planned ordinary cybernetic prosthetic hands. Since Nina is practically the only one that understands and cares for Dr. Cortex, Neo's love for her became one of his few redeeming qualities. In fact, the doctor loves her so much that there are times that he sees her as more of his daughter than just a niece
If Nina really IS the daughter ''witch I don't think that would happen after watching this'' how would Nina's mom would look like?

Revenge for what? It's Nina and Uka Uka who pissed Cortex off in Crash of the Titans. They asked for it and they paid the price in Mind Over Mutant after Crash kicked their asses. Also, the MoM continuity is no longer relevant in the current era. It got pushed as "alternate timeline" (a nicer way to tell you they got rid of it).

@@crashslysonic777 As I said before, Nina has only herself to blame. Her uncle punished her. She started first in Crash of the Titans. But of course that wouldn't stop from trying having some stupid petty revenge, even if she can perfectly escape anytime, with those arms.
Maybe you don't understand. MOM continuity is irrelevant to the current ps4 era. Crash 4 doesn't acknowledge the events of the ps2 era of Crash. That's why they dismissed them as "alternate realities that are semi-canon", which is just a nice way to say they're no longer relevant for anyone with a brain to understand. Of course they'd get rid of the messed up and inconsistent continuity of games that mostly failed to restore Crash's popularity back then. They're never going to create a sequel to Mind Over Mutant. Crash 4, and likely any games following it, will continue from the Crash 3 story, ignoring the other games. Thus, Cortex betraying Nina and Uka Uka never happened so far. And we don't even know what kind of role Nina will have, if they use her again.

What if it comes out that Nina isn't related to Cortex at all and he just adopted her. But he wasn't comfortable with being called "Dad" and just settled with being her "Uncle"
According to Neo's "On the Run" bio, under the "HATES" section, It mentions "clowns". Interesting.
EDIT: Also, in the DS version of Crash of the Titans, Nina said she 'didn't go to Evil Technical College to become a flunky'. Strange that the other versions (and Mind over Mutant's DS version) didn't bring that up.
I really think they will just retcon the clown family thing as we never saw it inside the games really, and that's probably for the best

Continuity has always been spotty but the upcoming fourth game seems to help explain the inconsistencies. Much easier to decide what we can take as canon.
Yeah with Crash 4 being a soft reboot of the series allowing it to have a fresh start, honestly the series needed it, plus with multiverse based travel in the new one, it's likely we will see acknowledgement towards the other games in the series like the radical games and the post naughty dog era, plus some new ones like a possible Crash fails timeline where the marsupial doesn't end up saving Tawna in the first game and dies because of Cortex and whatever, then Tawna picks up the slack and saves the world where he failed. Plus with Tawna's new design with it hinting being a different Tawna we know and not to mention her threads seem to reflect Crash quite a bit, so it's likely this Tawna still cares about Crash, cause if she was evil she wouldn't be like she appears to be.
AND with Crash 4 aka the new timeline, they can easily re-introduce Nina in a different way.

Project "Nina"
Since many people gladly share their headcanons here, I would like to take part in this :)
I have a headcanon where Nina is Cortex's daughter, but she is the result of an experiment.
She is his secret project. She was born artificially and does not have a biological mother.
Cortex hid the fact of her origin so there would be no need to explain everything to everyone (including Nina) and his enemies wouldn't use his project against him (well, except Uka-Uka)
Cortex had a plan and according to it, Nina was to become Cortex's successor, an heir to his future empire, his assistant and "right hand".
She should be evil, just like him. So he did everything to grow her to his liking. And all seemed good, she succesfully played the role of "beloved niece", until the Crash of Titans events))
I think that regardless of any headcanons, Nina has a lot to hate Cortex for. There's a big potential to be revealed.
It would be great if Nina has a decent part of the plot in some future game maybe, and the opportunity to independently choose who she wants to be, and what side she prefers more (cause for now it doesn't seems she had much of a choice).
I've seen the Crash on the Run version of Nina now and they did learn into her love of animals, and a potential anger issue. Crash finds her petting a chicken, but her robotic hands malfunction and hurt it, and she gets mad and takes it out on Crash
What if that goodness doctor cortex was worried about was her almost becoming a clown to that would also explain her goofy teath

You should now do the history of Pasadena O'Possum as well. I know that she only appeared in Crash Tag-Team Racing and in Crash Team Nitro-Fueled (aside from the mobile Crash Racing games). I know she would have little history, but she should return in future Crash Bandicoot games too like the upcoming It's About Time as a cowgirl adventurer

My personal Nina headcannon is that she IS Neo's daughter, but that she was basically a test tube baby.
But Cortex doesn't want to deal with a baby so he ships her out to someone else to deal with raising her. There she was able to gain her affinity for cute animals and learn to be nice. When returned to Neo Cortex, he decided it was best for her to believe that he was her uncle rather than her father, maybe so she would resent him less, maybe out of convenience, or maybe he just thought it would be easier for her to understand at such a young age.
Something like that anyway. I definitely don't see Cortex as the type to settle down in any way let alone get along with anyone really for a long period of time. But it's more narratively interesting if she is indeed his daughter. And it retains the integrity of his Bandicoot Bible backstory of being a lone survivor.
As far as her personality goes, I appreciate her being an entitled brat. She's never wanted for anything after all. But some resentment towards Neo Cortex would just make so much sense. She could continue to work with him despite resenting him anyway given that he probably provides a modicum of the paternal approval that she likely craves. But her resentment towards him could be used in the future narrative as a weakness that could be exploited.

Nina's original appearance was Crash Nitro Kart, but then to Ripto's Rampage? I thought it was Twinsanity. Also, she barely had a nose in concept art of CNK.

It depends on the game. In Twinsanity against Evil Twins, and in the DS version of Titans. In the others she's either evil or neutral.

@@STJ786 Nope, it's upon writer's choice. Just like other characters such as N. Gin or Crunch becoming Mr. T during the Radical Entertainment Crash games. It's the result of Crash having multi-developers. Each one writing characters differently. That's how Nina was written differently. Overall, she has mostly been written willing to help her uncle, but being neutral. The Radical games made her hateful towards the Bandicoots, while before that she was written as just wanting to have some fun. That's all.
