When it comes to your career and what you want to do in life, don't let anyone stand in your way! Every industry is going to have its difficulties, it's ups and downs, but that shouldn't stop you from trying and exploring your opportunities in life. Get out there, explore what there is, and make those choices for yourself!
Well, I do not completely understand your industry. I watched a video a couple months ago where someone lost their job to AI. It’s a real fear that people in the arts have that there work can be reduced down to ones and zero if I remember correctly, he was a web design artist, I unfortunately don’t remember all of the particulars of that video if I find it, I will reply to my own video and send it through but basically if I’m remember correctly, he’s been there for about five years possibly, but within the last six months, his workload drastically was reduced and then he was made obsolete.
As someone who wishes to become a voiceactress this video is so highly interesting Thank you a lot for such a great video This was deeply comforting and very educational and I really appreciate it Hearing I can't do a dream job because xyz is constantly floating around my head so this video is truly encouraging
I so needed this! At a con this year I asked for some advice from a voice actor (who was elderly and still working), her shining big bit of advice was "Don't bother", which was.... Lovely. Been grappling with that for a few months now, thankfully some non profit work I got almost immediately after helped stave off the doubt for a bit but this honestly has been just what I needed to hear, thank you so much sir!
I met Troy Baker at a con asking him for advice and he told me to be ready to fail. I know that seems like he’s saying I’ll never be a voice actor but he’s actually saying that it’s hard to get into. It’s not impossible. Like Joe Zieja said, we gotta put in the work.
As someone who will likely never pursue VA (due to not being a native speaker among other things) but who works in the creative fields as a freelancer and greatly enjoys both these videos and your course, I have to say that if you decided to post content about creativity in general, writing, etc. (loved your book series!!), I’d be glued to it. I really, really appreciate your mindset around these topics, and it’s always great to get a glimpse into it!
As someone who started with your course when it was still early access, it's been a great resource and continues to help so many people! Thanks for the affirmation, Joe, and hope this can be an inspiration to other aspiring VAs!
Growing up my voice was suppressed often, I wasn't allowed to express myself because I'd be yelled at.. same with moving my body like dancing and singing.. it was difficult to hold all my expressions in. But now finally after being free from the influence of my family for almost 4 years, I am a young adult who is eager to find my calling and express myself.. find the true authentic expressions within me and share them with the world. But grom being "stuck in a cage" for so long, I'm very nervous about expressing my voice. I feel a calling to try though and feel super excited about expressing my voice in all sorts of silly fun and serious ways. 🤓 I'd really like to be able to share my voice being characters from cartoons and anime, I love the work put into all them. I want to be apart of those teams and having fun with it all, away from stressful suppression. I'd like very much to be able to sing in public without my voice crackling and giving up on me because of extreme embarrassment. 🎤 I believe I may have a lot of work ahead of me, but I'm very eager to try. It would be awesome if the universe sent my way authentic trustworthy friends who could help me figure things out. I've pretty much been sheltered most my young life apart from the past 4 years of healing and recovering.. I'm still learning what it even means to be an adult and how to take on those kinda responsibilities. 👀🪬🔮 I'll definitely give it a try! 😼👍🏼
thank you so much, one joe to another i feel really bad that a lot of other things in my life (full time corporate job, moving recently, etc) havent left me with time i can fully devote to progressing my va career, let alone any time to audition or upload my own videos, and i am constantly getting FOMO on VO as a whole. This video gives me hope that its not too late and that as soon as things calm down a bit for me i can start things up again without having any less of a chance at making it thank you for always helping to hold that door open
Thank you for this! I just landed my second ever VO gig through Fiverr and it happens to be a corporate e-learning video. My channel is documenting the steps I’m taking in starting a new career in VO from the very start and it seems daunting so far but I’m sticking with it. On a side note, I’ve been waiting for my Warrior Voices info to get started and I’m really excited about it. I featured it in one of my videos. Really looking forward to this!!
Thank you for the clarity. I do believe that when people think there isn’t a career in voice acting, they’re probably talking about the “fun” stuff like animated series and movies, video games and such, because of the rates and things like that. But it’s true that there are so many other sectors. Heck, I don’t have a career in voice acting and I’ve been asked to record some lines for my company at times because of budget (even recorded some phone survey stuff a few years back, although thinking back on it, I was probably underpaid). So yeah, in the grand scheme of things, there is still a market out there. It might not always be be your dream contracts, but sometimes, variation is good and it diversifies your skillset too.
So real. I've been finally chasing my heart by doing voice acting (and singing), and it's sometimes so, so difficult to wade through everything you mentioned that's trying to stop me. Thank you so much for making these videos and grounding aspiring VAs with facts. Definitely helps me feel validated. 🧡
They told us because they failed, but if you haven't try, who knows you might succeed in voice actor, every people has different probability to get in to VA industry if it's either full time or part time.
Hearing some of this stuff did legitimately make me feel better - I recall reading Dee Bradley Baker's blog on voice acting, and while I do not want to delegitimatize his teachings, skills, career, etc, I felt really discouraged when he more or less said that if you don't do an insane amount of stage acting or whatever, you'll never make it. No doubt that helps, but it's still nice to hear another perspective from another professional voice actor
Thanks for the advice it really helps I always been a fans of your because of you and my determination I was able to land 3 roles on casting call club so thank you.
Thank you Mr Zieja for making a video like this, indeed voice acting is one of my dreams on doing in the future, just seeing a lot of shows that go on and seeing all the familiar actors that I'm aware of in certain games and anime, Just imagine if those were to hear my voice in those installments, I've been a huge fan of actors such as Richard Epcar or Sean Schemmel due to their amazing talent and I've always wanted to be like them, yes even Saab.
I enjoyed the use of "The Chase" during the 90s segment of waiting around to do your read at the agency. Also, I encourage anyone reading to watch the free training and seriously consider the full academy course.
Just follow your heart desire fellows. As Joe said, these comments come from sad people in general. Those people that spend their days scrolling through tik-tok, youtube, instagram and what not, because that’s relaxation to them. That’s how they spend their lives. One day they wake up, and realise that they never achieved anything, because they were too lazy and scared into putting themselves in uncomfortable territory. Getting into uncomfortable situations can be scary, I agree with that 100%, but that’s how things are. You wanna get uncomfortable, make mistakes and learn, there’s no shortcut to it.
This a really good insight although I’m inspired to become a voice actor right now I’m just gonna stick to practicing until then All I need now is some good equipment
I follow you..Streaming movies animation ect have exploded..so there is hope..Who we market too is key..however i have seen E-learning vids with a actor what seemed to have an AI Voiceover or was it? i must say it sounded lifeless..but clear and on cue. Sounded like there was desser plugin going through the mix it sounded perfectly balanced, yet still lifeless. But does anyone care? One things for sure AI will never replace the character of a persons Voice. AI does have its advantages. You can now record your voice in many forms via AI set up your own studio, then send it fast hence saving money for the customer. imagine the costs involved in going to a studio doing your spill ect.. not cost effective anymore. This the only reason why voiceover jobs are drying up not because they dont need voiceover actors. time is money. this alone will be a game changer (a worthy investment)..im still inspired with this clip thanks Joe..Lets make voiceovers great again...hehe
Thanks so much for the insights! I do still have one question staring me down though, which is when should I start with voice acting? I’m still quite young, not even in collage yet. Should I be waiting until I’m in/out of collage or are there some things I could do now to get myself out into the industry?
Life may have its ups and downs plus a lot of hurdles to overcome but even if I don’t make it I want to leave a trail that at least says I tried making it to acting. Creative arts helped so many find themselves and I’m no exception. Thanks for the video Joe.

Well the answer to your question is it depends were you in England we don’t have any anime studios and video games are only done where the rich live in London. Also bang zoom entertainment wouldn’t let me win a voice acting competition for anime because I didn’t live in the USA.
I'm more wondering how to get started with independent, amature projects for fun and practice - no career aspirations but don't really know how to start the unpaid hobbyist side of things....

the low end, for sure undoubtedly, and for much of the middle. But there will still be some middle priced things and the high end will never be AI..
