From Public School PE Teacher to Homeschooling Mama: Reflections AFTER MY FIRST YEAR

  • Hi! My name is Nia & welcome to my channel! I live with my husband, Jeremy, and our two littles: Lena Pearl (age 5) and Nigel (age 3) in a 184 year-old cottage in Williamsville, NY. We call it the Cozy Cottage & it’s the inspo behind our not-famous brand, “Cozy Homeschool.” 😉
In June 2019 my life flipped upside down. I was a former elementary public school PE teacher who said, “I will NEVER homeschool our children.” Thankfully, the Lord had a better plan AND a great sense of humor. ;) This video shares a glimpse of my "why."
In the summer of 2019, I had about 4 weeks to figure out where to start & I felt super overwhelmed. Almost paralyzed. Thankfully, I had a lot of veteran homeschooling friends who shared with me and talked me back from the edge of the cliff. They encouraged me to take a deep breath, start somewhere, and be ok with changing things up. :)
I LOVE to research, try new things & share with others. (A teacher at heart.) So much has been shared with me, so I want to encourage others who might be where I was a year ago. Maybe you're feeling scared, overwhelmed, or ill-equipped...but are feeling the nudge to try something different. I thought ALL the stereotypes, unfortunately, but wow! Was I wrong! Homeschooling has come a LONG WAY over the years and is NOTHING like I thought it would be. I know that this isn't for everyone, but if I had never tried it, I wouldn't have known it WAS for our family.
My motive for this “Cozy Homeschool” channel is to share ideas, inspiration, and resources I’ve found along the way. I am not an expert, just a real mom with 2 energetic littles who needs Jesus, lots of coffee, a cozy little cottage to call home.
Now that I am one year in, I can confidently say with a smile that in June 2019, “my life flipped right-side up.” 🙌🙏❤️
    My daily reminder:
“Make it a great day, or not, the choice is yours!”
    Lots of love,
    ~Nia~

I would love to hear your thoughts on homeschool PE. One of the things I felt like we gave up homeschooling is having them do a lot of PE activities (and art, would love your approach for that as well). I hope you keep making videos, love what I've seen so far!

I love your attitude. My 3 goals were to teach my kids to love God , love others and love learning.

Such a great video! I was an esthetician before I started homeschooling and this is the best thing I’ve ever done!

Let's Homeschool Together welcome to the team! ;) I find that many times the right thing and the hardest thing...are the same thing. I found that I had to grieve what isn’t, accept what is, and (for me) trust that God is with me and will give me the tools that I need when I feel ill-equipped. I also have to remember that my kids want “present” over “perfection” and I love that we’ve turned learning into a family affair. What a beautiful way to cultivate these relationships that can have an impact for a lifetime. ❤️ Wishing you all the best this year! You got this!

Shemeka J hi! I found those at TJ Maxx last summer. I suggest checking TJ Maxx, Homegoods, Marshall’s or Hobby Lobby in the office supplies section. I have one for each child. It makes organizing and storing our work for the year easy & they are pretty to look at. ;)
