The gain control... every guitarist's favorite knob! The Kemper does an amazing job profiling amps but if there is one control in the Kemper that shouldn't be over used, it's the gain control. It has few limitations but understanding what it can do and why it behaves the way it does will help you get the most out of your Kemper.

Maybe in the future in a brand new operating system update, Kemper would offer the function to turn 10 "snap shot" profiles from the same amp, at different gain settings, into one "exact" profile. Seems logical; right?

I've learnt more about using the Kemper from you than everyone else out there combined. Keep doing what you do and producing those excellent profiles! Thanks v much.

This video might hold the most important piece of advice to anyone who wants to seriously use the kemper! Thank you.

Great video! I’ve only experimented with turning the gain up on a clean profile, not down on a dirty one. I will give it a try. Keep these Kemper videos coming, they are a fantastic resource. Cheers HW!

Excellent explanation. Can you do a video for High gain tones?

Taking a clean profile and throwing an aggressive drive pedal in front ? Thoughts ? I believe that’s the third rail here. And I mean a real pedal upfront not the kemper “pedals”. Great vid

I’ve used a pedal board in front of the Kemper many times and I think the same rules amply as an amp. If the tone is too bright it can get pretty harsh but over all I think the Kemper takes pedals just like an amp.

IMHO, the Kemper takes pedals just like champ. Hardly any difference to the real (clean) amp in the way it reacts to dirt pedals. I have a little tone experiment on my channel.

I agree with ToneJunkie TV and Frank'N Guitars...the KPA responds exactly like a tube amp, when it's input is pushed with an external OD/Distortion pedal. In fact, that typically is how I achieve my high gain tones. I will select a great profile of a high gain amp (e.g. a Soldano SLO-100) that has been profiled at medium gain...and then boost with either the KPA's built-in "Green Scream" stompbox, or an external pedal such as a DOD-250 reissue, or aTube-screamer. That is the same thing I did with my tube amps, even when I was using a high gain model. For some reason, I just prefer the sound of a dirt pedal slamming the front of the amp set at crunch to medium gain settings, versus using no pedal maxing the gain on the amp itself. For me it just sounds more musical, with more clarity and note definition/articulation.

Thanks for the video. How come your LP Junior's head stock looks like it is leaning to the right?

I'm curious to which badger profile he's using. Badger 15, Badger 30 or the Badger 35.

Does this advice also go for high input volumes? Let’s at you have an amp profile on the edge of breakup and you want to feed it a fuzz or boost to push it into a dirtier sound. So you place a high output boost or drive in front of the Kemper. Would you say it’s smarter to start with a) a higher gain profile, roll the gain back a bit and have that process the high input signal or b) use the edge of breakup profile and feed that the high input signal?
(Looks like its b lo is asking the same question)

Any tips to avoid clipping ? I’m pretty new to this. Although I don’t hear any clipping of any sort I do see that my input is always red when I’m doing tremolo or chugging.

You can try playing with the clean and distortion sense, but just now that when that light turns red you still have 20bd of headroom left before it will actually clip so if its sort of hitting red and then going back to yellow or green and you don't hear any clipping you still have headroom to spare.
