- I walk through the steps to change spark plugs on a 2009 Toyota Rav4 3.5L V6 engine (2GR-FE).
This process is different from the 4 cylinder because it requires removal of the intake manifold.
Link to PART 2: • Part 2 - 2006-2012 Toy...
The OEM replacement spark plug for this engine is:
Denso FK20HR11
gap: 0.-43 In. (1.1mm)
Torque: 18 N*m (183 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf) - see note below to reduce torque if using optional anti-seize.
Intake manifold gaskets (6) - Toyota part no. 17176-0P021
Intake manifold torque:
21Nm or 15Lbft
I did not see a torque order, but these should be tightened a little more over several passes.
Tools used:
10mm socket and wrench
5mm allen socket
12mm socket and 12mm open end wrench - for intake bolts on back
5/8" spark plug deep socket (with internal rubber boot).
I used a power ratchet:
ACDelco ARW1209-K9 G12 Series 12V Li-ion Cordless ¼” & 3/8” Ratchet Wrench
Permatex Dielectric Silicone Grease
Anti-seize lubricant (optional) - If using anti-seize compound, use sparingly and reduce torque by 30%
-not recommended by some spark plug manufacturers.
This process should apply to the following model years:
2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 - Авто та транспорт
This is the best video out there, this guy explains where the 2 bolts are in the back, no one does. Blessings my friend
Glad the video was able to help. Thanks
Great video. On the back left bracket you can use a 12mm socket to remove it and leave the bracket attached to the plastic manifold. One less step since you have to take off the bracket off anyway to remove an ignition coil. Thanks for the video. Very informative and helpful
Wasn’t looking forward to the day I had to change em, but this video gives me comfort
Great video, possibly the best out there, everything explained clearly & precisely. Thanks so much. God bless you, my friend
Glad it was helpful! Thanks
Thanks for the video and I just got done replacing my spark plugs on my v6 rav4 watching this.👏👏👍👍
Glad it was helpful!
Great video , I just picked up a rav4 . Thanks a bunch!
Glad it was useful!
just got done doing it I would say depending on how meticulous you are it's a 3-4 hour job
Great video and parts list. Thank you. I will be attacking this soon!
Fortunately, it doesn’t need to be done often. If the tabs break on the electrical connections, I have another video on replacing them.
Thank you sir, this helps a lot!
Absolutely sensational video. Very clear and helpful
Thanks. Glad it was helpful
sensational? 🙄
Great job,very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
excellent video! Thank you
Thanks, I hope it was helpful.
Thanks for this wonderful video. Would you please list out all the tools and name of the greases that you use in this video?
Thanks for checking out my channel! I updated the description so it should include all of the tools that were required for this process. Let me know if you have any more questions
Very well done
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you
How many pounds of torque did you use to tighten the spark plugs? I hear 18mm in the video, not sure if that's what you meant.
Torque: 18 N*m (183 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf)
My wife's 2012 Rav4 is 100500 miles I think it's about time to perform a tune up.
I hope this helps!
This is why the use Iridium tipped spark plugs. To change them every 190-200 thousand kilometres
Ruthenium is better than iridium
Bro what electric wrench is that I want one. And how much was it roughly?
It is a set from Amazon with 1/4 drive and another 3/8 drive.

Anymore repair videos on the v6 rav4?
Just fixing the electrical connector clips for the ignition coils and the EGR valve. Fortunately, it has been pretty reliable.
Can't you just disconnect stuff going to the throttle body and then leave the throttle body attached to the manifold?
It is hard to reach the bolts on the back of the intake manifold with the throttle body in the way.
Looks like I’ll be getting the I4 🤣
ADD 55 gallon OIL barrels as well :P

The shop wanted to charge 1600$ to do this. I did it in 3.5 hours. Maybe I’ll get a 4cyl.
That amount seems super high for this job since the only parts are 6 spark plugs and some gaskets. Fortunately, you only need to do this every 100k miles.
Doesnt look bad at all
Took me 3.5 hours. Maybe I’ll get a 4-cyl next time.
No way, much better off putting the 6 in shop to change if its needed than buy 4 today. The 4 wont last as long, more troublesome. The older 4 used to be the better one but Lexus started using 6 and perfected the 6 yrs ago. The best is the 8cyl if your keeping one many yrs in a bigger suv. My 4.7 Tundra has 400k miles its a breeze to work on, its like my old 07 4Runner was too. In 40 min you can do both valve cover gaskets & all plugs. Thats my only engine repair to date on it, had only maintenance since day one till cover leaked and I changed them for about $35. You wont beat that 4.7.
Sounds like your ratchet needs oiled up, ever oiled it? My air rachet aint that dang noisy, need ear plugs man..lol
You can't just lay on top the engine and do the back ones awkwardly ???
The intake manifold is covering the ignition coils in the back. You can't pull them out to get to the spark plugs.
