trout fishing line, braid vs mono

- What is the best fishing line for trout fishing? is it braided fishing line? or is it mono-filament, otherwise known a mono fishing line?
This fishing line debate has been argues all around the world, but nobody has ever been able to come to a sensible conclusion.
Personally, I prefer mono-filament fishing line to be better when I am fishing for trout, particularly in streams.
There certainly is a place for braided fishing line, including light, thin braided fishing line, and other gel-spun ans fusion lines, however that time and place is not on my trout fishing adventures.
I use heavy braided fishing line for my Murray cod fishing and golden perch, or yellowbelly fishing, however I always prefer mono line, or nylon line for trout fishing.
As the subject of fishing line is such a debatable subject, please do not fight and argue over this in the comments section. Please respect each others opinions. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
I would go for the mono line any time of the week. Never been a fan of braid line on trout. But with cod yes. Keep up the good work Robbie over the years I have learnt a lot about fishing from you .
I stand by braided mainline with a flouro leader for trout fishing.
My rebuttal to your first point is that you can: (1) Run a long enough leader to ensure that there is enough stretch in the line to avoid losing fish on jumps and head shakes... and (2) Keep the tension set very light on your drag system (I mean c'mon that's how you're *_supposed_* to fish for trout anyways, and I think a lot of the time, people lose trout because their drag is cranked too tight in the first place.)
Rebuttal to your points on casting: (1)This one is more of an opinion statement, but I would say equivalent diameter braided line casts far superior to monofilament and even casts superior to all but the highest end of equivalent diameter flouro. In my opinion is must have something to do with line memory. (2) As far as tangling and wind knots go, I've had the most issues with mono, second most issues with braid, and the fewest issues with flouro. The only situation where I prefer to run straight flouro for trout or salmon fishing is on a twitching jig setup.
And finally in regards to leaders(warning: another opinion statement): I just feel like that is just plain laziness. Plus I have a good lazy mans technique for those of you that don't like tying line to line knots or have problems tying them correctly; simply tie your mainline to an ultralight snap or oval split ring and then tie a 2 - 4 foot leader onto the snap (whichever length you feel comfortable casting). I guess for ultra clear visibility water you may need to push the leader length to that 4 ft limit, but I've fished some pretty crystal clear waters with very spooky fish using this method and it didn't affect my results.
I only use braid for backing on my fly reels you cant get anything better, its thin and dosn't rot, its very strong. Another very intresting video. Thanks man.
this is the video i been looking for! thank you sir👍
Nice one Robbie, my preference is braid for big lure fishing, mono for light spinners unless pike are present and mono for all coarse angling. I much prefer the immediate response on braid with big lures as heavy mono is to unresponsive
Well I do braid to mono or flurocarbon... when bobber fishing I have about 15ft of mono/fluro leader to braid but when I'm using a spinner or minnow jerkbait I use about 4-5 ft mono/fluro leader. Sometimes when it's a spinner, spoon or jerkbait, I wouldn't have leader on it but because of visibility purposes I would usually put the 4-5 ft leader... I do this because braid doesnt wear out fast so I won't have to respool every time... I would only have to change the 15ft or 5 ft mono/fluro leader
Thanks for the tips Robbie! Good video :)
Thanks for sharing great info!
Great insight as always mate. I think at the end of the day, we all have our own preferences and sometimes it might seem mad to outsiders but works for us. ATB Moose
i run 2# test, izorline xxx and i agree whole heartedly! run it as your main and you can tie up all day in a snap! with a good line roller and drag system, you will never goof and get the nests and knots... good vid!!! :)
Thanks for this, you really helped me make my mind up 👍
It's like this for me: I got the same hair style, same fashion style, and same music that I did 25 years ago. I haven't tried a hipster hair do, and I ain't tried using no braid on no trout. I don't have to. What used to work, still does. I love Platil 5 lb when I can get it. Magic!
Awesome video!
The braid line sticks out line a sore thumb in cleat shallow streams and scares trout. Seen it a million times. I have tested it and switched to the same lure with clear mono and caught fish.
Awesome spot mate , greetings
What’s the rod you are using? Looks very nice :)
Awsome stuff mate. Have u ever used fluro ??
mono for smaller stream trout fishing without doubt! the positives for mono far out way the positives for braid. for a slight difference id recommend trying a good quality straight through fluorocarbon such as Super FC Sniper 4lb.
I tried braid with mono versus straight mono when trout fishing using powerbait. Trout ignored the braid main and mono leader combo but my straight mono line caught lots of trout. I am going try straight fluorocarbon line for trout.
line stretch is good for most anglers because the average rod is over-strong and it often takes years of experience to learn how to 'feel' the bottom and current through your gear. Line stretch allows for lots of gear and user error. Im finding that fluorcarbon sucks for me.... I going to try some 20-30# braid soon on my larger rod
Cheers for vid
Robbie mono for any trout lure even strike tigers
Do you use 4 lbs mono for trolling and land based lake fishing??
I use braid but with a 3+ foot leader, the memory gets me probably cuz my reel is too small lol
Never had a problem with braided trout fishing
what about bass and catfish?
ty very much for info Robbie and can u also tell me the name of the song at the begining of video bless u
Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm really sorry but I honestly can not remember the name of that song.
I prefer mono for small to medium fishing. But once you get to large fish species, obviously braided line is better, because it's much thinner and you can still cast properly, with thick mono line it's not practical obviously. And obviously when using braid you should have a good decent gauge mono leader.
I mostly catch small to medium fish on cheap 4-5kg mono line, and a basic cheap kmart/bigw rod, this is all that is needed to catch Redfin, Carp, Silver Perch, Yellowbelly.
For Cod you will need a stronger rod and braided line of about 20kg rating or such.
One downfall of the smaller setup with the 4-5kg mono however is if you get snagged, if you are snagged really good, you won't be able to use the line's strength to pull it back with brute force, instead the line will snap and you will lose your lure. For me this isn't a problem, since I fish in local rivers that have barely and flow in them, and thus I can swim in and retrieve my lure manually, and I get a nice cool dip in the process. Since I enjoy getting in the water this isn't a problem for me anyway.
Ultimately with fishing, you can go totally crazy and spend thousands of dollars on all sorts of things that essentially are not necessary. I find that it's better to just keep things more simple, it's also less crap to pack up when you are done.
How about braided line with a fluorocarbon leader. That’s what I use for trout up here in Maine. That way I have the strength and elasticity for those head shakes. 😎
Hey mate that sounds like a great idea. A lot if people down here use that system too.
What pound do you Pair? For leader and main line any suggestions on flouro leaders as the ones on Amazon look ify. Any help is appreciated!
Braid over mono, if i had mono my pb wouldve snapped that shit. Yes when going for small trout that dont have strong lips, a stretchy line is nice. But when you have braid you can horse 5lb trout around like nothing. Idk to each their own, ill always spool braid, especially when trolling for sure!
I only ever spooled 1 reel with braid and i didnt like it. Birds nests, wind knots and tip wrap. nah, mono for me thanks. cheers.
Have been using mono line for over 40 years and dont see the need to change at all.
what about braid with 4m of fluoro leader? talking about lakes for lake trout.
does the line color matters even when fishing with mono in streams? it says trout have good sight but then I don't get the point of having lines in hi-vis colors...what's your opinion?
smartfishing.info Hey mate I have caught heaps of trout with bright pink lines. I use to use a line called Siglon V many years ago. It was bright pink, and I caught heaps of trout on it. I don't even know if it's still available!!
I do believe that trout have great eye sight, but I also don't think that the line fusses them too much. Thick line might, but just light 4lb line of either braid or mono doesn't matter.
personally I think they will feel the line passing through the water anyway as it most likely gives off some kind of vibration.
This guy needs to stick to his gold mining show on Discovery Channel and leave the fishing to the pros.
What on earth are you talking about?
Cool story bro, where's your video? Who are you again?
Do you use 4 lbs mono for trolling and land based lake fishing??
trolling with 4 pound test line?
