Always find it entertaining to watch experienced anglers acting like children when they hook a good one. Thanks for all the videos, Cal!
If you think I get excited fishing you should see me hunting....I've shot a bunch of bucks, but I still get buck fever!
Have you had any problems with braid sawing grooves in you guides or tips? Thanks.
Great video. Recently I scored on eBay getting an Alvey 550 reel. I was thinking of getting 10lb braided line for it and your video convinced me that is the way to go. I’m looking forward to that set up with an 7-8 foot rod and it will really cast a long ways.
Yes....I just spooled up a rod with 15 lb braid last night...Super fine, super strong....Why not? Thanks for watching!
Hell yeah I dig this I'm goin with braid I've never tried it
Fins braid is the smoothest braid I’ve ever felt. Great stuff.
Yes...It's very nice!!
Thanks for your tip about dark lures in one of your previous vids. I had a recent trip where all they would hit were black spoons, I couldn't get a whiff on any of the normal silver/gold etc.
Good deal David....Glad you find this stuff helpful...The video I'm posting today talks about dealing with tough trout bites...What sort of spoon were you pulling?
good stuff, thx for the information
I prefer to troll with level winds but on occasion use a spinning rod. I have six holes in the kayak for rods and always like to carry at least two spinning reels while I’m resting or setting up other rigs. Is there any reason except maybe cost for not using a trolling swivel on all my spinning rods? I wish I had seen this before last weekend when I went to Samoa North Jetty. The mono doesn’t cast as far for surf fishing and EVERY cast off the jetty rocks got stuck. I’ll have to try the braid for both scenarios and hope to come back with a little bit of gear and a few keepers.
Love the info Cal. Do you use the florocarbon leader with the wiggle disc? They say not to because the action of the disc wears on the line?
Yes....Just check your line....I can't imagine that Wiggle Disc doing any significant damage to 10 lb line over a day or even a few days of fishing...The invisibility of the fluorocarbon out weighs the wear....
Thanks Mark!
For trout I still use braid to flourocarbon. 10lb braid with a 6lb flourocarbon leader.
Right on....I use both....
I agree! I do both on my rods too!! when it comes to leader length of flouro coming off your braid, how long does the leader need to be to serve its purpose? Thanks for the vids! On the hard days your tips always help out!
I don't think it has to be super long...36 to 48 inches when trolling....
Fish Hunt Shoot Productions thank you!
How often are you changing out mono? I at least change mine once a year sometimes more.
Usually every other month of so, but I fish a lot...And I'm tangle prone...LOL...
kokanee jiggingbut using the technique for trout? I'm a real jig guy, so if you have any thoughts on jigging, I'd be honored to hear them! thanks for all of your awesome videos by the way!
I use braid on my stream spinning rod. It drifts better then mono. Way more sensitive. Still use a 4 to 6 foot flouro leader with it
Very good....I'm going to be running a spinning rod with braid and top shot the next time I'm out! Thx Cal
Seems like a few years ago I tried braid. Kept getting wind knots, also sticking on the spool as I cast. Could be too small braid line? Or cheep brand? Or? Reading reviews on amazon on different braid lines it’s all confusing. Can you recommend a few brands that are better than the rest? The smoother the better also… thanks!!
FINS is great
Can you fill a whole spool with fluorocarbon? Or is mono better for trout?
Definitely use a flouro leader. We also use flouro mainlines, but it is not as important as the leader. ~Wes
If your have issues with your downrigger release when using braid, try switching to a Chamberlain release. I was skeptical and now I swear by it!
Could I use 10lb braid with 4lb fleurocarbon leader for a crytal clear shallow river for trout
Sure!
I bought a reel off a buddy that put 100yards of braid and 50y of 4lb fluorocarbon.. debating if I should pull all this off and go full braid? Any advice guys? (This is mainly for trout in the mountains)
Toss the 4 lb line….. that’s old school 70’s tactics…. Unless your fly fishing you should never go below 6 and 8 to 10 is standard for me….. they can’t see fluoro so use line capable of land big fish consistently. And before the light tackle guys chime in I’ve landed salmon to 20 on 4 lb p line and a lot of other huge fish on light gear, but it’s a stunt…. Fish with capable gear and smash big fish!
I only use braid on spinning rods. No mono.. way more sensitive and lasts for 1000’s of fish. Mono is curly after 15.
Yep!
There are a lot of trout In the amercan I got about 50 of them to day (didn't keep any of them)
Wow!....I'm not surprised....Little rain and warm weather....I think we've got a great spring ahead...We better have a wet winter next year or we are in trouble, but this year we have water, but we don't have all that big cold runoff...Last year it seem to take forever for the spring season to get going...And then the spring season was relatively short....
There is a lot of trout everywhere..it just depends on where you are:)
I only use braid for jigging, the extra sensitivity helps. Everything else, go with mono.
why - I'm primarily a trout spinner guy.
You will have a harder time landing fish in cover with lighter line but lighter line for trout fishing is the way to go. There is nothing like landing a 9lbs trout on 4lbs test!! Which is the better brand of P-line, Cal? I'm trying floroclear but after about 2 weeks its memory is really kicking in.👎
Seaguar InvizX is a true fluorocarbon fishing line and Pline floroclear is not.
I’m looking forward to your vertical jigging under the kayak video. 🙂
Yes....Gonna try it some more this week!
look at Izorline in Golden green .You will be impressed!!!
I will give it a try!! Love trying new stuff!!
Yes. I use braid for the main line and the set up one of two ways. 1st is tie on a a swivel then to either a mono or flourocarbon line or the 2nd is to tie mono or flourocarbon line directly to braid with a Uni-Knot and then go from there. I NEVER go straight braid as it's much harder to break off braid than mono when, not if, I get hung up on the rocks.
Yes!!
Trolling with a 50' fluoro leader has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH TROUT FISHING. This may be the dumbest mono-fluoro debate video I have ever forced myself to watch.
The leader connects to the snap at one end and the lure at the other……I was referring to a top shot…. Top shot and leader are two completely different things……
