I go +2 on the FC , Its invisible so if anything it can help more than hurt! Mainline for trout is 6LBS and a 8LBS 3foot leader for stream fishing trout. Berkley has a green FC that i love
Ive been using kast king flourokote lately which is a copolymer coated with fluorocarbon. Its a nice workable line and I haven't had any trouble with tangle or twist on a 1000 size reel and ul rod.
Had some days I got ripped off on 6Ib and wished I had 8 lol. Then again the feeling when tou land a beauty on 2Ib is like no other.
some great advice for a newbie like me. thanks
+Rob Rees glad I could help! Tight lines!
For those asking about braid, because it has zero stretch, you would want a very slow action ultra light rod to help protect the fish from damage unless you plan to keep all your catches. The shock of a hookset with braid can damage a trout fatally. Ive seen it/done it. Not to say there isnt a place for it. It does float well and 5 or 8Ib braid is very thin.
Great content thank you! Quick question can I connect 4lb monofilament to 6lb fluorocarbon at the end for trout fishing?
You sure can!
Have you ever tried izorline? And what lb test should I use, the lakes I fish in have a lot of rocks.
Hi Dylan, I have not tried that line. And what pound test you use would be based on water clarity. If it’s dirtier water you can get away with heavier line. Also depends on what you’re fishing for. If trout is what you’re targeting I’d say 4-6lb.
Thank you!
Do you think 4 lb test monofilament would work? I live in Pennsylvania and the trout don’t get too big in the smaller streams.
Sure! I use 4lb a lot around here. I even use in Erie on Steelhead!
What kind of spools and spinners do you prefer for lake rainbow trout?
okuma ceymar
Would i be able to use braid main line with a fluor leader?
I guess you could if you really wanted to. I usually use Stren magnathin in 4 pound test
I hard that peanut butter with worms is a good bait for trout is it true? If you don't know that's a new challenge you can try
These are exactly the kinds of videos I needed! I've done a lot of fishing, but almost always with other people's gear from when I was in boy scouts or using my uncle's gear. I'm looking to build up my own supplies though, so this is perfect to get at it. Thanks!
Also, in one of your videos, I think you mentioned you live in Johnstown? I'm down in New Stanton, not too far. Know any good spots to go? Maybe out in Latrobe/Ligonier way?
Hi Dan, thank you for the kind words! I'm happy to hear you are enjoying the videos! I'm not sure if this website will help www.lhtrouttrail.com/streams.asp, but they have some nice streams with coordinates listed near Ligonier. Laurel Hill Creek has a nice delayed harvest and artificial lures only section.
Thanks! Yup, that's what I was looking for!
You're welcome! Anything you'd like to see covered in my next video?
Knotts are always a good choice. Alternative rigs would be nice. Which ones to use in different waters or how to tell what to switch to if your first rig isn't working. You could also do one on drag, from setting up drag to reeling in the fish with appropriate pressure.
+Dan Hank Great suggestions! I'll make sure I get those topics covered in the next couple videos!
IS Mono and FC considered Nylon lines??
Off topic, digging the shirt.
Thank you!
Can anyone help me ?? Should I use trout S.O.S. line or KastKing flurocote for trout witch would be better ?
I don’t have any experience with those lines. I personally like seaguar red label
How about stern fishing line?
Good stuff Caleb. I was wondering if you ever use braid. I do most times trout fishing. Its more expensive, but I've found that I can cast farther with less effort. I will usually use 6 to 8 # braid with a 6# topshot about 2 to 3 feet long just so the line will have some give and so the fish won't see it. Living in western NC we have alot of clear, fast moving trout streams and so over the years I've discovered that I can detect very subtle bites much easier, but more importantly when the current is carrying your bait down stream you tend to get some line scope due to the current. This is where braid really does well because it is very sensitive and has no stretch allowing for a better hook set. Just my 2 cents worth. God Bless, Be Safe and Tight Lines. ¿>•}}}>< Oh yeah, strike indicator. HA HA HA
+angry fish Thank you! I definitely do use it. I have used it for trout, but I typically save it for bass/catfish situations. I guess for me it's just a confidence thing with the fluorocarbon. I will definitely talk about braid in another video, and all of it's wonderful uses. I do thank you for adding more knowledge to the viewers!
+One More Cast TV Thank you, but I hope that you don't think I'm trying to come across as contradicting or a know it all. It's just what works for me. I have all but given up freshwater fishing. I still occasionally trout fish and take my boys to the catfish pond, but by in large thats it. I've been bitten hard by the saltwater bug.
angry fish I didn't feel as though you were coming off like that at all! No worries! I would definitely love to get into saltwater more. Hard when you live in PA though haha
Did you find that you got more bites with the 4lb than the 6lb? I heard to say you catch more fish, now that you are on 6lb, just wondering about bite ratio.
I use 4lb when necessary because it’s either really low and clear or I can see fish moving away from my rig. Typically I like to throw 6lb if I can. How many bites I get don’t really vary as long as I use the right line for the conditions. Hope that helps!
Great video bro
Thank you!
What kind of line do you think I should use for trout fishing with a spinning reel? I am currently using 6# mono, but was thinking about switching to 4-6# Fluorocarbon. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
+Darren Denzine I really like 6# fluorocarbon. The 6# I use is the same diameter as 4# mini. It sinks faster than mono and a little more sensitive in my opinion. I think you'd really like the switch!
+One More Cast TV also what brand of fluorocarbon do you recommend?
+Darren Denzine I use Seaguar. Red Label if you don't want to spend too much. Invis x if you don't mind spending more.
+One More Cast TV do you think I should get 4lb or 6lb for fishing for rainbow trout that are stocked?
+Darren Denzine I fish 6lb no problem. Depending on how low and clear your waters are you might need to go 2lb or 4lb.
If trout are hungry they will eat...Lol I have 20 pound braided line and just caught a 20in Brown trout this weekend...
Thanks for your video! Can I use braid with a long leader?
If you feel like you needed to, sure. I use braid to fluorocarbon leader for bass. Occasionally, I will use it for steelhead as well.
Is 14 lb line test good for trout please tell me if u can (stocked trout)
+Mushreq Alsaberi I would not suggest that no. You want to use a much lighter line because of how well they can see. I wouldn't go any higher than 6lb test. I typically use 4lb test unless the water is dirtier than I will use 6lb test. Hope that helps!
U can it really dosent matter to much i have caught multiple trout on 12 pound test and line is line u might miss some fish but mostlikly not
have you used braid for trout? are trout line shy?
Trout are extremely line shy. If you want to use braid for trout, you would need to use a Fluorocarbon leader attached to it to help hide the braid
I have med heavy ugly stick n baitcaster would a 14lb fluro be to big for trout . The lake has trout , big striper n cat fish water is not crystal clear should I down size line
lead different that will help..... a 14lb fluro will not catch a thing sadly
go with at least 3 ft lead of 2-6lb
Can I use braid for trout? If you don't recommend please give me a reason
+Joon Shin I have a video that discusses line type. I don't recommend it due to how visible to the trout it will be. You could use it as a main line and tie a leader to it. Lots of people do that. Check out my other video for the specifics though!
Joon Shin use a copolymer line it's best for trout
If I'm primarily fishing for trout in rivers and lakes, should I simply be lining my reel with 6-8 lbs test for mainline with fluorocarbon? And then tippet or leader of 2-4 lbs with uni knot Tie?
Would having a braided main line with fluorocarbon leader be a viable option or will trout see the braid ?
My head hurts
I like to run straight fluorocarbon or monofilament. But I have friends that run braid to fluorocarbon so I guess try both and see if it affects your hook ups.
I use copolymer you forgot to mention that
+chubby channel you're right I did. I actually use that for bass and love it. I plan on mentioning that in upcoming videos. Thanks for mentioning it on here. Hopefully people see this comment and do some research on it!
I use 2lb test for trout fishing fluorocarbon no other way.
density deep I’m going tour fishing for my first time ever and I had 2lb test on my pole so that is fine then ?
6lbs mainline mono ,(maxima UG works great) and a 8lbs fluorocarbon leader that is invisible ,works good and limits breakoffs of a 3lbs or 5 lbs trout. you can even bump up the leader to 10lbs if you want. remember ...its invisible
+Trouta Holic I've never personally liked doing leaders unless necessary. I know a lot of guys that love it, but I just prefer to have all one main line if possible. Of course you'll need to when fly fishing, and other scenarios and then I will use them.
6lb for trout is overkill unless you're fishing in rapids. 2lb is just fine, you just have to learn how to set your drag
i'm pulling out 5lb trout so why would I use 2lb test?
@@LoyalK9Utah it can make a huge difference when you're dealing with spooky fish. But if it's working for you it's all good
