That's a ton of useful information when I first started out fishing again this year I spoiled everything up with monofilament. The one thing mono is also good for its to learn how to use a baitcaster
That’s so true!!! Getting a birds nest with braid absolutely SUCKS!!!! I learned to throw a baitcaster using mono (actually, mono is all I had 40 some-odd years ago), so when I started teaching my son to throw a baitcaster, I made sure mono was spooled up on it. 😁
I always run braid to a leader and change the leader accordingly to the body of water or lure. the best of both worlds, sensitivity and abrasion resistance
Great video! As someone who has fished most of their life but took a break for years this video is very helpful. I haven’t really gone fishing until recently for about 5+ years and things have changed quite a bit! Thanks for the tips!
TJ- Good summary of uses of each type of line. never realized that mono was considered a floating line. I've fished many a topwater on braid and didn't realize that the line was a sinking line. Thank you for pointing this out to me.
I still use mono more than anything else . Better for abrasives and good mono casts better . I mainly use braid as a filler . I fish a lot , so usually change out mono about ever 3 months . I seem ti catch more fish using mono over braid . A little over 50 years of fishing . I average about 14 hours a week or more fishing year round .
Great breakdown. Most people dont have multiple reels to keep all of the lines on them. I use braid with no leader. I might catch more by using a leader or floro but I have caught fish that guys have waited their whole lives to catch, without a problem. I do fish mostly stained water. For depth control I just crank slower. For my spinning set up i just use a lighter braid Just my 2 cents.
Thanks for the advice! What pound of braid do you use on your spinning reels? I was planning on using it for a Texas rig so do you have any suggestions?
using a fluoro leader with braid is definitely better for hook up ratios for fish like walleye and crappie if you're using light gear. You don't pull the hook out of the fish's mouth as often b/c of the stretch. A sharp, sticky hook with nickel coating will also up your chances. Another plus side is that you can pop your bait out of snags easier.
This is a MUST watch & save video!!! I’m always guessing what line to use with what lure. Growing up, in the mid 70’s and early to mid 80’s, there was only Mono. I don’t know for sure if Fluoro was around back then and I was only concerned with what pound test to use in Mono. If I remember correctly, I pretty much used 10-12 pound test. Now, with 3 types of the most common lines, Mono, Fluoro and Braid, it’s nice to know which to use and which is best for what lure you want to use. Thanks for making and uploading this video!!! 😎👍
Thanks for having TackleJunky. He is so informative. Also thank for supporting BassGeek. They are some my favorites. I am glad TJ suggested we check this out.
I pretty much completely agree but my favorite type of line is fluorocarbon because most of the lures i use need fluorocarbon for crank baits, jigs, jerk baits, chatter baits, spinner baits, all that stuff i agree mono really gets put to the side cause better lines have come out and it's SO CRUCIAL to use fluorocarbon for crank baits and jerk baits but i agree there is a time and place for each and every type of line
I used fluorocarbon and braids lines in the 12lbs to 17lbs. I used braids lines that separated just above the knot. Spiderwire separated badly every time I tied a lure. I also wet the line before I tighten the knot. Fluorocarbon I find it to stiff. The only fishing line I use is the Sufix siege mono 12lbs and 14lbs I have two Quantum smoke S3 baitcaster and Quantum smoke rod with micro line guides. Reel weights in at 6.9 oz. Rod is also very lite
I use 80 lb monofilament with a steel leader and a #16/0 hook for trout. First, I find a fisherman who has already caught fish and I buy a live trout off 'em (really you can use bass, walleye, cat or anything as long at they are no less than 12"). I hook it through the nose and send it flying off with all my might. Sometimes the hook rips right through, but with good technique, I have kept them on my line and get a good 75 yards (you can always tell if you lose one if the fish flies like a boomerang at a hurdling speed in the wrong direction). I still haven't caught a trophy, but when I do, I expect to set a record.
I’m not a pro, I use mono. From casting the flats to digging grouper. Mono and a leader. With a float or a heavy weight , mono and a leader. We eat a lot of fish. If I was a tourney guy, probably be different.
So for a baitcaster, my understanding is that they primarily like mono, but is it reasonable to use most of your line as mono, then the last few yards of line as flouro?
Well a friend gave me some P-Line Fluorocarbon and I only Trust about 2 People on the UA-cam and I got to Tackle Junkie before Debo/Devon lol. I’ve only ever used Monofilament.
I've mainly done sea fishing mono straight threw line can u make rigs using flurocarbon if I was using mono what is strecth like and strength on flurocarbon I know if u get mono stool somewhere and u try and pull it out it get snap easy thinking I've maybe trying a fluorocarbon rig on the end
So if I were to use braid as my main line would flourcarbon make a better leader or is mono a good option? I have some 17lbs mono and I was wondering if it would be a good choice.

I just use spider wire for everything … poppers and spinners and Texas rigs no leaders ever Lolol I’m no pro but I tend to catch a decent amount of big bass and huge saugeye
Caught my pb using mono and a Berkeley Choppo. I use Fluoro for pretty much everything other than floating baits. I don’t use braid much, as I still get the occasional bird nest. It’s a pain to get a bird nest out with braid
When to use mono: When you are fly fishing When to use fluorcarbon: When you are flyfishing or as leader for fishing sea trout When to use braid: For evertything else😂
This man really said “So basically use monofilament for top water then I use fluorocarbon for everything else and when I want to fish top water I’ll use braided. I've watched plenty of videos, and none of them are as elaborate. I finally have some understanding for when to use type of line.
TJ- Good summary of uses of each type of line. never realized that mono was considered a floating line. I've fished many a topwater on braid and didn't realize that the line was a sinking line. Thank you for pointing this out to me.
Much needed explanation! New to fishing and this broke everything down perfectly!!
Definitely a must watch. This is one of the most comprehensive breakdowns. I love it
This has been the best video describing the different lines and when to use them. I’m going to make some changes.

simply thank you

Yup, still using some mono. Use the Maxima Chameleon with some Kvd Line and Lure, very helpful.

Good stuff, TJ81. The simplicity makes a sometimes stressful issue much more easy. So many choices and you dropped it down. Pow! Thanks!
TJ going to have to try the googan line especially since I'm a Karl member
Nice! like the info. Thank you!
Nice info thanks for sharing
Good information. 👍 Thank you
I got sick,of losing lures In my river so,I switched to 30 pound flourcarbon and I only have heavy lines now it’s awesome
Great video very informative thanks 👌🏾

One of the best fishing line videos out there, great examples of when and how to switch line types for the situations.
Great video
Great info
For the win!
Man, there is alot to learn with fishing. Still enjoying it tho can't wait to start hooking up more often and with some bigger fish
tackle junkie going into detail is time well spent.
Tackle Junky sent me here.
thank you
Nice job
old cane pole and some heavy duty string just like Tom Sawyer used and Chester and Doc on Gunsmoke!!!!
I saved the video and prolly will watch it again to fully absorb the info!! Love it!!

Tried them all and went back to old school MONO.
Why not use the fluorocarbon in grass? I have never used anything but mono but I am looking to try it out
Thanks for being so helpful.
What line is better for live bait in fresh water ?
How long is florlcarbon line good for under normal circumstances...
Great tips thanks tj81
Can you use braid for top water
Thank you. This was exactly the information I was looking for.
I subscribed. Happy fishing.
Good explanation tacklejunky! I need to do a review on pline here soon.

Great video!!
Jim's knowledge of the sport of fishing has greatly helped me as an angler!!! 👍👍👊

There goes your creditability. Mono floats? Cut an inch of mono and drop it in a glass of water. Better hope your life jacket floats better than mono.
