@@thesanfranciscoseahorse473 I doubt you actually wanted a reply, but I'm feeling generous so here is one anyway. I do not support "spitting on soldiers". I don't support spitting on anyone. And I do not know anyone, of any political persuasion, who does. Not sure where you're getting that one. Do I "support" flag burning? Inasmuch as I support any other lawful expression of someone's first amendment rights. I wouldn't personally do it, but it has been classified as protected speech, and so I wouldn't support legal action against someone who did it, because ultimately that action against them would be declared a violation of their rights. Further, I don't think the two are comparable. My statement was specifically about the use of the confederate flag in the United States capitol by people calling themselves American patriots. The confederate flag is literally the flag of traitors to America. That's what they were, that's why they created a flag. Because they didn't want to be part of America anymore and needed a flag for their new "country". Flying the flag of a traitor while calling yourself a patriot is such a specific example of hypocrisy that it is mind boggling how anyone could've thought to do it. It is inherently contradictory. You can not fly the flag of enemies of the country you are claiming to support. It doesn't even make sense.
@@thornlings They certainly don't see themselves as traitors. I don't think they should have been waving that flag around either, but I'm sure if you asked them they wouldn't see it the way you've described. Most of the people I've met who use that flag see it as a symbol of independence. Naive? Ya probably. But they see themselves as resisting a government they think is going against the will of the people. These people genuinely believe the election went to Trump and that the Left is cheating them out of a victory by undermining our democracy. Exactly the same accusation the Left throws at them. They are sitting on two sides of the same street seeing each other as doing the exact same thing. I blame the media for not having these people sit down and explain their views clearly. Instead, its all name-calling and "traitor" accusations. These people might have been foolish, trespassers, vandalizers. But traitors? Worthy of execution? If thats true then we need to see the same logic applied to BLM rioters who burned down a federal court house and several police stations while burning American flags and chanting slurs against the nation.
That's fine, you can take it from Douglas Adams instead - "To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. I said this in the short so i’ll just repeat it here. I’m a high school student. Yesterday, instead of working in class, my teachers put on the news. Throughout the school day we watched people breaking windows, scaling walls, and threatening violence. My teachers’ explanation for this was simple enough: We are living through history, and we need to remember this for the rest of our lives. Last time people were asking how we were in school. We were watching through zoom while the teachers shared their screen
My teachers did this, but for 9/11. Except for one, who insisted that we still needed to take an AP English exam. Your teachers are entirely correct. Also consider speaking to a counselor, because this is a lot to take in and the emotions that come with it can be so strong as to be debilitating. Consider it, please.
I definitely agree, this is history happening right now, and as it's the dark kind, we all need to remember it because I'm sure plenty of people will try to make people forget it happened.

Der Spiegel's cover for their Lafayette Square coverage was Trump sitting in the White House as it burned with a lit match in his hand. I've seen people reposting it like it was recent. And now, it escalated to what we say yesterday. Does anyone really want to see how far he can go with his "if I can't have it, nobody will" toddler-esque temper tantrum goes on?
To your last statement/question, I do want to see how far Trump can go (until we are forced to remove him). Because, every day, he buries the Republican Party a foot deeper...along with anyone that helped him. Every day he takes this coup farther, the more ammo we have to throw in the faces of every person who argued and mocked any warnings. Thanks to the internet, phones, and social media, we have records of every traitor. I'm happy because every politician and public figure had to show their true colors 2016- 2020. The ones who cowed and the ones who refused. We must not allow Trump supporters to cover it up and pretend they were totally against him the whole time! I did enjoy your writing on the buildings. America doesn't have much nice architecture due to no one being here to build it all, like in Europe. I do love our capital buildings though, as someone lucky to live in my state's capitol. It's the lights that really make it cool to look at. Luckily there aren't many Trump supporters here, thank god, and the protestors that did show up, didn't get as far. I think, so far. :( And I appreciate your feelings! The White House deserves to be respected and cared about...or else the actions of this mob wouldn't be as a big deal! :) Sorry for the rant, although it's nice to see I'm not the only one writing long UA-cam comments lol.
Well said. Before 2016 I was a moderate Republican (yes we do/did exist). Now, former Republicans like me watched in horror as their party attempted to tear down the government we cherish. Political beliefs on laws and regulations are one thing, as there must always be two sides to a debate. But what the President has peddled for the past 4 years goes far beyond that. I remember 4 years ago on his inauguration I tried to calm my democrat friends down, saying that he was radical but he can’t cause as much damage as they think he could. I didn’t support him, but to say he would irreparably harm the country was surely overreacting right? It took mere weeks for him to prove me wrong. He’s caused more damage than even they feared. Going to law school during all of this showed me just what kind of damage he’s causing, it’s serious. The new President has to make sure this never happens again, no matter which party attempts to overthrow the government. I was too young to remember 9/11, but the somber feeling that accompanied my parents talking about what they saw that day... I felt it again yesterday, only now I was watching in horror with them. Thank god the bombs were disarmed, but we need to prevent the fuses from being lit ever again.

I remember hearing about an exchange between an American & a German in which the American asked why the German wasn't patriotic about Germany. The German replied that they were, they just expressed it by doing things like opting to pay more in taxes to take care of everyone in the country. Edit: I guess my point in this is that there's more than one way to show patriotism.
Elias, I am a veteran and an American. A patriot stands for country over party. We who have served, including this treasonous president, took an oath to the constitution NOT a person, not a party, not a god, and most certainly NOT to a president. These were not patriots, these were seditious armed invaders. Frankly each should be tried, jailed and after their prison term is over, stripped of their citizenship and deported.

True lovers of the Law are in short supply!
Sadly, with each attempt they make and each judge they appoint, our strong institutions get weaker. We have built and built for centuries, but they only need a decade. It is always easier to destroy than it is to build, so we have to win every time. They only have to win once.

@@j.lombardo Most Liberals aren't.

Hitler had a very thoroughly thought out world view. Although complete BS, his bigotry had rational underpinnings. Many of his beliefs were majority views at the time, including in the US. Trump, on the other hand, couldn't explain his ideology if his life depended on it.
Hitler was the leader of the NSDAP without being head of state. Nobody rises to such a position who is an incompetent fool. Not now. Not then. Republican congressman Kinzinger said he didn't have his staff come to work that day because he knew something was up. He admitted that without seeming to realize what he said, in an interview with Steven Colbert not long after things went down.

Of course the fact that the president didn't respond to requests to deploy until the VP did so was also a large part of the problem. I'm not sure if Pence even HAS the authority to make military deployments without Trump's input, but either way, good thing he did to finally get them moving.
Also following that, the Mayor of DC is pushing for state status so she can call in the DC National Guard without having to go through the White House in the future. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going, because they were holding on to something. I have a much greater respect for you for the things you've said here. I can't explain the trauma I went through that day. This gives me hope. Thank you
People called me alarmist and silly for saying this was an actual possibility.

And now instead of admitting you were right, I'd bet many of those same people are totally fine with what these terrorists did.
@@adrianshephard378 - Riots? Excuse me but never witnessed ‘riots’. Did catch some footage that came from Spain that was passed off as ‘riots’. Look it up 🤷♀️
dude I called myself alarmist for considering this... if this keeps up we might seriously look back on 2020 as "the good times"
I'm Canadian.
In March 2014, I was in DC, visiting for two week the capital of my country's southern neighbour.
I stood on the grounds that was desecrated yesterday.
I sat on the stairs that were dishonoured yesterday.
I walked in the rooms that were soiled yesterday.
Yesterday, I felt the same feelings I had back in 2001, 5 years after I stood in the World Trade Centre, in awe of its impressive architecture and feeling of power emanating from this simple building.
Little did I know that this "simple building" would come to mean so much.
And little did I know that my experience on the Capitol grounds and inside the Rotunda would come to mean so much, either.
I cannot help, at the sight of some of the pictures, with the individual taking selfies of himself, sitting in Pence's chair, to recall a certain Corporal Lortie, taking our Assemblée Nationale in hostage, 30 years ago. But this time, I'm old enough to know what it truly means, unlike back then.
And I cannot do anything but hope that every American of age to vote, no matter which party they are rooting for, understands what I now understand. For your country, no matter your political side, deserves better than this.
This is simply the logical dénouement of Trumpism. It may yet go even further if he's allowed to keep his dirty, bloodied hands on the reigns of the country. It started with nonchalance, playing golf while the country was having to deal with the pandemic. It continued with the soulless pardon of his cronies and co-conspirators.
And I appreciate your feelings! The White House deserves to be respected and cared about...or else the actions of this mob wouldn't be as a big deal! :)
Sorry for the rant, although it's nice to see I'm not the only one writing long UA-cam comments lol.

“Being a patriot doesn’t mean wearing a flag, it means standing up for our institutions and fighting conspiracy theories”. This. I’m not an American, but yesterday’s events made me deeply ashamed.
Not at at all what patriotism ia. Its pride in ones.country. not the Govt. Has nothing to do with a coined phrase thats ised to discredit anything deemed wrong by the powers that be. True patriots in this situation would pull nearly eveey polotocian out by their hair and hang them.on the nearest lamp post.

Please always remember, being on the moral and ethical side of history is undeniably painful. For those of us who never strayed from the path of sanity, refusing to get lost in Trump's wilderness of lies, the inevitability of this day was never in doubt. I am so proud that our experiment of democracy survived intact. We must learn what we can from today, and continue to bear witness for tomorrow. Keep up the good work my friend! True lovers of the Law are in short supply!
Sadly, with each attempt they make and each judge they appoint, our strong institutions get weaker. We have built and built for centuries, but they only need a decade. It is always easier to destroy than it is to build, so we have to win every time. They only have to win once.
This, THIS is the reason why the WHOLE WORLD was watching the election more closely then ever. America has officialy become the worlds "Florida man"
He who runs the United States, runs the Free World, America has let us all down in Europe that People are looking elsewhere for leadership in Germany and Angela Merkel.
US needs to get it's shit together and take White Supremacy seriously.
I think Defunding the Police, getting rid of all of those bad apples that sided with the Terrorists is a much needed step and from that they rebuild the Police Force, make sure that every Cop is checked and vetted so we don't have Nazi Cops infest the Country ever again.
I think the comment is unfair to flodira men
Considering Trump's change of residency he is officially Florida Man.
@@2DRonaldo Please, no. It's ok if you say this to yourself, but please do not say this loudly. It's so cringe to think americans lead the free world, if such thing exists.
Only America is a "florida man" that can influence world politics, normalize this kind of behavior, spread fear mongering, get other "trumps" elected by example, and start wars. So pretty sure that's the main reason why we were all losing our minds over the election.
