This whole situation has me howling in laughter. For decades, conservative interests have been trying to deregulate corps at every possible turn, giving them as much power as humanly possible in the current political climate. Now that the corps are doing a thing they don't like, they think they can just... arrest control back. As if nothing happened. As if all that power they avidly provided were an illusion we all cooked up in our heads. They created this monster. It's poetic.

That tends to happen when you exclusively look backwards as the world moves forwards.
And now Democrats are simping for corporations who pander to "The Message" and use those corporations to censor anything they don't like. Funny how that works.
There are different types of conservatives. Ron obviously isn't an establishment conservative, he seems like a heavily (for today's times) culturally conservative
Its important to note that Disney got the Reedy Creek Development District not directly for their theme park. Walt Disney World (park) is shoved in the farthest corner as it was simply a condition to get funding for the entire property (banks, investors, etc). The original goal for Disney, was EPCOT, or as it was known, the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. So yes, while it might seem like a bit odd for a theme park to have supreme municipal power, that was what it was for: a city. Look up the "1966 Disney EPCOT film" for more, its a pretty fascinating look into what was quite literally Walt's last dream.

The only time I would ever report on something a child has told me in confidence is if they may be being abused or are in danger. Children are people too.
Kids need adults like this. Even if parents are great, kids don't necessarily like going to their parents for everything. They need adults they can trust that aren't their parents.
And no guarantee how safe a space that home is to come out to... could be that kid is white-knuckling their way to adulthood when they can finally be themselves all the time.
It is so sad to see people calling educating children about sexuality "sexualizing children" and "grooming children". Especially knowing that teaching children how things work and what is appropriate and is not, actually helps them speak up and prevent prolonged sexual abuse. It is precisely this "anti-grooming" ideology that is making grooming easier.
And of course teaching about LGBTQIA+ issues actively prevents future misery for some children while having little or no negative impact on the other children (research even suggests that a more LGBTQIA+ accepting society would benefit everyone)
Yes! So much grooming is successful because children are not informed (at an appropriate level for their age). This law wants to treat children as property instead of people.
It's only because they build up these crazy strawmen and say that sexual education are drag shows or teachers "transing" kids or whatever. The only way they win these discussions is by outright lying and pretending things that don't happen are real.

Sometimes you give legal commentary about areas you don't practice in and end up having this memorializing your legal career. Disney ended up folding more than a wrapper of trash from their overpriced concessions.
At last, a chance to re-tell the worst gag I heard studying law. The rule against perpetuities includes (in the UK anyway, and in 1985 anyway) the idea of a life in being which is "en ventre sa mere" i.e., conceived but not yet born. So if Megan was pregnant when Disney did the deed, that baby would be what Legal Eagle calls the "measuring life". Our law lecturer posed the question: what about a frozen egg/sperm combo? Would it, he asked rhetorically, be (wait for it...) "en ventre sa frigidaire"? I know, I'm sorry. But I waited over 30 years for this.

Disney effectively bought the loyalty of the district. According to the report, here’s how it worked: Disney would provide flashy perks to Reedy Creek employees, many of which weren’t available to the general public. These benefits included up to 40 percent off Disney cruises and merchandise, other discounts on resort rooms and services, and millions of dollars worth of Disney park annual passes for not only employees but also their friends and family - plus free, single-use, transferable tickets over the holidays. District employees even received some privileges reserved for Disney workers, known as “cast members,” such as gifts and invites to closed-door parties. @@theadministrator4765 Uh ya he did. Disney no longer has control over the district, the RCID has been replaced with the CFTOD, their royal clause was struck down in July and was only a delay tactic, Disney withdrew all but one of their federal cases which will most likely be dismissed post audit of the RCID, thus leading to only state cases which legal experts have claimed they will lose as the audit is now evidence, oh and Disney has to pay all the backed taxes. So ya, Ron won. How do I know this? Because unlike you I actually researched it and I live outside of the boundaries of the now former RCID. Get with the times mate, brush up on current events.
As much as I despise Disney The fact that they outmaneuvered Ron Desantis is hilarious XD. But seriously tho, thank goodness they won because Desantis is consolidating all the power to himself and it’s becoming incredibly dangerous.
DeSantis needs to be removed from office. He's clearly committed a clear abuse of authority trying to consolidate power. If there was ever a time to enact impeachment, this would be it.
The new things they are trying now is to pass a law that take their development rights away but don't realize that it would affect all developments in the state. In addition to tolling all state roads to enter the grounds and increasing hotel taxes that would again effect all hotels in the state.
In many ways this feels like one of those Alien vs Predator movies. My hope is that we all can just keep our heads down and Disney will destroy DeSantos and DeSantos will find some way to stifle Disney’s continuing attempt to extend all of it copy rights indefinitely and to gobble up or control all media or cultural thought in the country.
I find it hilarious, that DeSantis and his pals knew Disney was going to try something, knew how Florida's laws worked and completely failed to look for publicly posted notices about said meeting
My personally preferred version is that there is somebody somewhere in the lower echelons of government who is tasked with checking out for such stuff and did see the notice - and decided not to bring it to superiors' attention. Heroes are everywhere.
It's even worse then that. All they'd literally need to do is take 5 minutes to write a script to notify them about anything with the word "Disney" in it, or anything posted by that county, and then have a human review the notifications and send them off to the lawyers if necessary.

Telling quote: "This board loses, for practical purposes, the majority of its ability to do anything beyond maintain the roads and maintain basic infrastructure." First off: Isn't that essentially the definition of "small government with limited powers to avoid overreach?" I thought DeSantis loved that shit. Second: isn't maintaining roads and basic infrastructure pretty much exactly what these kinds of boards are supposed to do?
Historically, roads going to and from a park are county and municipal, Disney had control and costs for them instead and now, DeDodo decided to try to strip them away and have nobody pay for them, as his act left nobody to maintain them. Infrastructure typically is park infrastructure and belongs to Disney. That leaves public utilities, which like the roads, would be in limbo.
Exactly, it seems like they had no clue what their job was gonna be. It seems like the board wanted to pick and choose what attractions Disney develops. "Oh that's to woke and not enough American flags, denied!"

You don't get to violate the United States constitution... Disney's filing is on Leonard French's UA-cam channel. I don't know if Ron has a valid legal defense strategy after admitting his crimes at press conferences and in his book.
I can already see Ron DeSantis walking up to Buckingham Palace with a .45 determined to do whatever it takes to strike back at Disney, and then immediately getting suplexed by the palace guards.
I’m not a lawyer, but the way I see it, DeSantis made three fatal flaws in this situation. One, you are a governor and no matter what legislation you pass, even if 99.99% of people agree with it, you will have at least that .01% of detractors that you need to deal with so if you know that you are passing unpopular legislation, accept that people are going to speak out against it and don’t engage. He should have let Disney say their peace and ignore it but he let his precious pride get in the way. Two is admitting that he is doing this out of retaliation. This will cause problems down the line if it goes to court and he has to justify his actions against Disney because they have every right to speak out about the legislation, but he doesn’t have the right to use his governmental power to retaliate against them for it. Not to mention he loses any legitimacy there may have been for actually wanting to take a closer look at Disney’s municipality deal. Three, and the one I’m thinking Disney is counting on most, is DeSantis not recognizing that he has an expiration date, Disney doesn’t. At most, he has a few more years as governor. If these cases go to court, Disney can drag them out for at least the rest of his term and likely longer, so all he has really done is left a mess for the next governor to clean up. I’m not saying these were the only mistakes he made, but I think they were the biggest ones and I don’t see this ending well for him.
I agree 100%, he is definitely being very short sighted with this in how he approached it, and very much forgot that if Disney has the money to heavily back him to help him win election, they can turn that power against him too. Furthermore the man keeps making promises that he would never be able to keep. For example he probably had to be told about the debt issue and that it would single handedly sink Orange County. Disney pays for most the infrastructure so he can’t promise tax payers that they won’t pay a ton more for all that new infrastructure they would be on the hook for. Finally whatever he would want to do would have to be done within 3 years which any legal dispute with Disney would basically make impossible as they don’t have a celling on how high a court they can dispute a law to if it matters enough to them, unlike a normal person. That and Disneys lawyers are specifically the best lawyers money could buy that specialized in Contract and Business Law, so it’s very likely that Disney will actually buy up most of the nations A team representatives to defend them and to keep them from helping DeSantis.
I think his actions were predicated on the idea that he is not going to need the governship to continue to accrue power and that anything he does now creates the optics he needs to continue to accrue said power. Nothing he does will actually hurt him politically because there is an entire machine set up to spin everything he does as a victory against the "woke". The odd thing here is that rhetorical trick had nothing to do with legislation. "Rules" in that phrase isn't referencing "laws". Instead, it's a bizarre appeal to authority to sidestep the need to defend her flawed logic. She lays out a bit of argumentation resting upon flawed assumptions and narrowed views (akin to false dichotomies or not considering all possibilities) and then suggests Democrats are trapped by this logic... The "rules" she refers to is logic itself.

Its important to note that Disney got the Reedy Creek Development District not directly for their theme park. Your last line is THE GOAL.

The term is.. Fascism but I guess it's fine since is anti woke 😂
I find it hilarious, that DeSantis and his pals knew Disney was going to try something, knew how Florida's laws worked and completely failed to look for publicly posted notices about said meeting

Dipsantis is full of his self that he never even considered that maybe "You don't f with the Mouse™©®" is a well known phrase for a reason.
Your problem is assuming that they knew how their own state's laws worked
It's even worse then that. All they'd literally need to do is take 5 minutes to write a script to notify them about anything with the word "Disney" in it, or anything posted by that county, and then have a human review the notifications and send them off to the lawyers if necessary.

First off: Isn't that essentially the definition of "small government with limited powers to avoid overreach?" I thought DeSantis loved that shit.
Second: isn't maintaining roads and basic infrastructure pretty much exactly what these kinds of boards are supposed to do?
Little Ronnie thought he’d be able to use his flunkies to dictate Disney corporate policy.

That wouldn't happen because DeSantis would be breaking English law carrying a hand gun to commit a crime, ie Killing the King.
Disney is basically a giant law firm that just happens to make family friendly entertainment.
