One of my grandpas friends was actually one of the two Americans that died in the axe murder incident, and apparently they cut down the tree because it blocked the view of what the North Koreans were doing
2:29 Honestly, the idea that a random North Korean can casually split a log lengthwise with his bare hands like it's no big deal is far more intimidating to me as an American than any propaganda they could com up with.
A little more detail on the tree incident, American forces wanted to trim the tree at the DMZ because the tree blocked sightline from a South Korean observation tower which the North Korean forces can manoeuvre behind to set up strategic position. A team of American and South Korean solideres went to trim the tree but was met by a North Korean captain calming the tree was planted by Kim John il and prohibited the American forces from cutting it they ignore it the the short tempered North Korean captain ordered to “kill those bastards” and the rest is history
I haven't laughed until it hurt in a long time. The description of the absolutely insane arsenal we brought along to chop down a tree just as a big middle finger is almost cartoonish. I can hardly believe that actually happened. I can't imagine the pure panic when everything started showing up.
Yeah that’s what I love about this country. We may argue about politics and stuff like that but when someone steps out of line we collectively go “fuck this guy”.

Yes. The unusual show of force wasn't so much to make North Korea back down, it was to make China back down. War with NK means war with China. Period. Every year the joint forces of South Korean, US, and all US allies in the Pacific theatre practice a full scale war in full view of the North Korean forces... Every year. It was called Team Spirit. It was also the first time I encountered Gurkha troops and where I learned about the interesting knife they carry. They are extremely well respected. I dunno why I thought that was important. At the time that I was there (70's to 90's), the US civilian population also practiced a non-combatant evacuation (NEO) during the exercises. I am always shy to get political, but given the planning and history of US forces overseas, I will say that I am left a bit confused about the breakdown of events during the Afghanistan evacuation. I have never been there, though, so my perspective should be taken with a grain of salt.

That 10 foot vertical joke is hilarious in hindsight since a Nork was able to highjump over it to escape to SKorea. Before going back because he wasn't able to acclimate to the changes in culture and living standards.
The tree was sentimental… I don’t remember where but I watched somewhere where they went to trim the trees so they could see the bridge that was crossing the DMZ… That’s why North Korea didn’t want the tree trimmed or chopped down so the US and SK could not see them
It was cut so they could get a better view from the building across (this was right at the border), NK soldiers saw that they were unarmed and demanded to stop cutting the tree, they refused and then the NK attacked, beating several and dragging one across the border to safely beat him in a nearby ditch while soldiers looked on, when his body was recovered he was essentially a pulp. The tree had no actual sentimental value, they just wanted an excuse to not let the SK and US forces have their way with the border
I know this comment is old and all but yeah, the North Koreans claimed (after the axe murder) that Kim Il-Sung himself planted the tree there, and under no circumstances could it EVER be cut or trimmed. The US and South Korea wanted it cut down because it blocked view of parts of the DMZ. There was some more dick waving between the murders and the actual operation to cut it down, but besides that the rest was spot on

I remember being stuck at the DMZ for training and you can hear the loud speakers non stop shouting propaganda, after awhile it turns into white noise.
Well, they also played martial music. But I clearly remember the strange change in crescendo as they swiveled the banks of loudspeakers around as they would occasionally play those eerie, religious-like choral pieces, dedicated no doubt to the Great Leader or Dear Leader -- the sounds would be wafting and waning. (The South Koreans tended to play pop music.) I remember being on top of G.P. Oullette, at night, with our NODs (AN/TAS-6s), observing the area around, and they were broadcasting some audience hall speech. I asked a KATUSA who was speaking (because it clearly wasn't Korean); and he said it was Ceaucescu, the Romanian dictator (who would later be killed in an army coup around 1989).
You should do a video on the Colombian troops sent to help in the Korean war, who were then abandoned and fought with just machetes. It's pretty interesting!!
I was at the DMZ in 2000. Wild place. Staring at an isolated enemy that almost feels straight up alien, as they train their rifles on you, is bonkers. You know they probably aren't going to start an international incident to kill you. Probably...
One thing to take into account is that there was no formal peace treaty between the two Koreas so the Korean War has been going on for who knows how long by now
Also if anyone is interested in the 4 North Korean soldiers who got caught by South Korean lumber jacks, Vice has an interview with one of them! He’s a pastor now in South Korea if I remember correctly.
My grandpa escaped North Korea but I don’t really talk to him about because he probably doesn’t remember stuff and I don’t know if he wants to talk about it because a little while ago his step brother that he escaped with passed away. I heard his story from my dad(his son). Anyway I really enjoy the content on this channel.
If anyone sees this and wants to know here’s the little of what I know of his story: My grandpa was born in we think 1941 in North Korea. He was the son a rich man who has many wives and children. He was one of the youngest so he didn’t have wealth. He escaped during the Korean war with one of his step brothers. I believe the voyage mostly was by boat and they went to busan (it’s south of Seoul, the capital of South Korea). He pretty much became a gangster and one of his friend’s mom lead him to Christianity. He met my grandma and they got married. My grandma’s brother-in-law was in the military so my grandparents pretty much lived off of them and got a farm where my dad lived. And in the 80s my grandpa and his family moved to the US. (Sry for the awful grammar. I haven’t slept much in a while.
Thank you for talking about paul bunyan my but u forgot the civilians in paul bunyan a huge population was ready to move away from near the capital because the tensions were so high according to my mother who was a I think 12 or 11 she remember that there was already a huge mass migration going on untill the operation was successful

DUDE I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! I can’t wait to watch you grow and in super hyped for your next one!!!!
I was at the DMZ in 2000. Wild place. Staring at an isolated enemy that almost feels straight up alien, as they train their rifles on you, is bonkers.
You know they probably aren't going to start an international incident to kill you. Probably...
One thing to take into account is that there was no formal peace treaty between the two Koreas so the Korean War has been going on for who knows how long by now
Bro you have the perfect voice for these videos I stg
And you have the perfect blocks for freedom island
@@BlueJayYT 😳
6:04 as a not so proud Louisiana resident I must say we deserve to be the successors to Florida man
I was disappointed it wasn't a Florida man, that's the exact kind of thing a Florida man would do.
As a Louisianan, this should of been Florida
You all need to pass the LA version of Florida's Sunset Law so we can get all the awesome Bourbon Street and Cajun Gator stories that we know exist.
dude timmy dying actually made me jump
The best thing to come out of this whole situation was the inspiration it gave to the writers of Deep Space Nine.
3:25 the EA one made me laugh so hard
that shot on timmy scared me more than it should have pulled my arms back from my keyboard and shit xD
Also if anyone is interested in the 4 North Korean soldiers who got caught by South Korean lumber jacks, Vice has an interview with one of them! He’s a pastor now in South Korea if I remember correctly.
BRUH!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD CONTENT!!
Operation Paul Bunyan is the reason I love our disgustingly bloated military budget.
North Korea: Can't even give its soldiers guns to murder two noncombatants.
USA + SK: Would you like nukes with that?
Honestly it is funny.
just a LITTLE back up
This is the most underrated channel I'm subbed to
More vids pls these are insanely good
For a place called the demilitarized zone there sure are a lot of military there.
0:40 Oh hey Blue Jay I'm glad you're still managing to find food on a student budget lol.
4:44 good to see taxpayers money going to good use
Don't quit making vids! You're hilarious and awesome and I look forward to seeing more no matter what it is
Thank you for showing duolingo it reminded me to do my lessons
@ 1:16 the indochina war even had a third one that’s how popular the second one was
3:45 the president laughing and the "now u f up " really make me laugh XD
Holy hot dam hilarious historical takedowns, that include a Jeremy Wade reference!!!
the back up sequence put me in stitches
That poor tree was innocent in all of this, yet had an entire nation attend its execution.
You forgot that the show of force was so effective it was the only time since 1954 that NK offered any public apology
4:53 hear that? The world could have ended over a tree.
MURIKA
BlueJay saved the Sam o'Nella fanbase!
loving your videos. something I'd expect from a channel with 200k+ subs
Here again after the news today
This video seems to be gaining traction, congrats.
Operation Paul Bunyan is one of the best things I've ever heard
Ahh I've missed Sam o nilla.
Jokes aside. Your perfect. Love this shit
I have no idea about any of the other stuff in the beginning but I absolutely love Snowpiercer
If anyone sees this and wants to know here’s the little of what I know of his story:
My grandpa was born in we think 1941 in North Korea.
@@kayla7308thats interesting, never considered the escapes from the war
@@terigonUSAS12 I’m glad it’s interesting. Recently he had a big surgery and his wife passed away so I should really talk to him more.
This channel is super underrated
you're doing great, keep making videos.
The dudes who strapped claymore yo themselves stood on the line telling. "COME AT ME BRO" and danced at them
Thank you for talking about paul bunyan my but u forgot the civilians in paul bunyan a huge population was ready to move away from near the capital because the tensions were so high according to my mother who was a I think 12 or 11 she remember that there was already a huge mass migration going on untill the operation was successful
