That entire school segment filled me with sadness more than anything else. The best thing about kids is that they are genuine, and to see them forced to keep up appearances at such a young age is very hard to see.
At least they will never do either meth or fentanyl. I´m German and thus do not liver under some stone. And as far as I know, America´s kids have to do a flag oath. Hint, hint. Totalitarian regimes love that shit.

@@rieriesungob That's my thought. After this made it to UA-cam, how many of the not-observant-enough guides simply vanished, and their families too? A horrifying possibility.
Two things in this documentary really struck me. Despite all the attempts of North Korea to look perfect they’re still hopelessly outdated a don’t seem to know it. And the naïve nature of the tourists who tried to slip the minders to see normal civilians. It was never going to be possible given how everything is staged.
A friend of mine in Australia was, a number of years ago, involved in EU aid programs in North Korea. He described how he travelled everywhere with an official "guide" who just followed him around and made sure he only went where the government wanted him to. In every town he stayed in there was a single restaurant for officials and high ranking party members only. The food was plentiful in these restaurants and usually wasn't bad. As a "guest" of the government, he was compelled to eat in the towns party restaurant each night. My friend said that his guide, invariably a low ranking secret police employee, just loved going out to the restaurant each night. He would just eat until he nearly burst. It was quite a fringe benefit for a low ranking party official, like the guide, to eat in a high ranking party restaurant. He was going to make the most of it while it lasted.
A North Korean fisherman while out at sea heard South Korean radio program broadcast and in the radio program a character was having a conversation with another character about why they were late and said because "all of the vehicle parking places were taken" so she had to drive further away to finally find a place to park their car. The Sailor laughed at what he thought was silly South Korean propaganda. But he went home and that thought tumbled around in his head and the next few times he went out to sea he would listen to the radio broadcast and eventually something made him think that it might really be true that there could be a place in the world where they had so many cars that they had no place to park them. So eventually he wanted to find out and he defected taking his boat to South Korea.
He's like the majority of people. Believing the sophistry they were force-fed by their respective governments' media propaganda machines. We are not that different.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if North Korea was not under decades of American sanctions, imagine car parking space might in North Korea be as hard to find as in South Korea.
The scene with the old woman polishing rocks made me sad... She smiles cheerfully at the guide, the guide tells her something, then her smile immediately drops and her gaze falls on the camera. 😥

I remember reading somewhere that it isn't the punishment that is so terrifying, but the threat of punishment that terrifies people. So, when tourists misbehave and are disrespectful, the guides really do fear for their lives, and also fear the ''loss of face.''
Whats different to our western regimes? Most of you peasants are doing what the government and the people in power want from you, doesnt matter if its wrong what you are doing as long you get a little bit paid.
Giving money to officials legally and then monopolizing the market is called democracy. A place where all the housing, medical care, education, equal development, and only talk about ability is a dictatorship. It seems that I have to re-read philosophy again.
It really annoys me when people visit North Korea and try and out the workers in situations where they will be punished ! Completely unfair! I understand if this doesn’t happen we wouldn’t know all of this but my heart really goes out to them
Seriously how I felt, especially with the war museum section. If you were a tourist and would be the only person facing consequences for poking the bear with a stick, then do whatever you want. But the fact that other people could face repercussions for your actions, intentional or not, it's completely out of pocket if you're trying to provoke something
I feel the same way. These workers knows that its all lies. But they dont have any choice, and they may be punished becuse of the turists actions or questions.
Yes. They were putting those workers in comprising positions, to prove a point to themselves. To what avail? Confront the lies your own governments tell. The all lie. I understand some of the lues we're ridiculously infuriating, but they have rules, that these visitors agreed to follow. They are free to make all the critiques they want when they leave. Endangering themselves and those workers, for the satisfaction of a snarky remark or two was stupid. They were being rude and disrespectful, when they paid to visit that place.
"You didn't follow up the question, did you? You were scared." "I just didn't have the courage to" I dont blame you, mate. Infact, kudos for even venturing into North Korea. I dont have the balls to!
Impressive spoken French by some of them! Having citizens learn fluency in major international languages definitely makes sense for this regime, especially when offering tours. I honestly laughed when the guy near the end casually told the French tourist "je connais ton truc" ("I know what you're up to") after he tried to trick him.
That's the truth. The guide knew what the tourist he was taking was doing. The proof is the narrative and opinions that are deliberately built in this video.
I learn French in many years but i only know the word "truc" when i went to France, clearly, this word is popular in France but rarely we know it in school where we learn foreign language. Honesty, they speak French very well.
Can you imagine being upset that you can't buy or see an embroiderer that's probably child or a person forced into horrible working conditions. The Frenchman saying that dictatorships are "clearner" "no homeless" yea because they all die and starve together
When they said at the beginning that he went to Iran and loved it I was like "Ok well probably he means like the historic sites and landmarks and food and stuff" but by the time he was happily bowing to statues of Kim and saying how everything was so "ordered" I realized he actually thinks dictatorships are not that bad.
I can't believe they even tried to just go out for a stroll at 10pm, then proceeded to ignore the porter the first time when he asked them to go back in. Seemed like a great way to ens up like Otto. Idiots.

33:00 ive worked 6 years in a kindergarten in China. And the differences are insane. Every single facial expression of these kids in North Korea, is completely and utterly orchestrated and trained in, nothing is natural child emotions. I can spot this from a mile away. And the teacher too, each smile is fake.. Anyone that has worked with kids can see this. It's astonishingly sad, that even from the age of 3, they are growing up never having seen, or themselves expressing, real genuine external emotions. So how was it in China? The same as in the West, frankly, genuine happy playing kids, goofing off, teasing each other, hugging the teacher, good quality teachers that genuinely cared for the kids. They were obviously way more diciplined kids, but mostly in a good way. The fair but firm mentality. But when i look at every face in this video, not a single one of the kids are showing genuine emotion. Perhaps they never learnt how to, since all their teachers also only show them fake smiles. This is a huge issue for their future development as emotional real human beings. It's the equivalent of being raised by sociopaths in a basement with no connection to anyone real.
that whole class will be forced into the military, until they die. youre right, theyre not being raised normally. theyre for show. and then theyll probably be thrown into military service and a new group will be pulled from the country and treated the same
Thanks for sharing your perspective. I still think of the whole thing as a show. They might or might not have freedom of expression among themselves, they are just not allowed to show it when the "guests" are around. I could imagine emotion management must be hard for kids, but it's a great deal of selection: you can pick a few "model citizen" children among 25 million country for a single show kindergarten (and I guess conditions and opportunities are much better for those kids hence the incentive).

It makes me sad that he and she have those skills and they won’t be able to share them with the world, have to be told what to play, can’t compose or collaborate with others, etc. Very gifted children.
It's also not natural talent. There is no such thing. They were forced into learning these skills for no other reason than to be used as puppets for the soulless benefit of the regime.
It's wonderful how the tourists were risking their lives just to get us weird glimpses of the country.Tourists were really fearless even by knowing the consequences in the strictest and isolated country ,they tried so much and wandered sometimes😂.
Please don't get these tour guides in trouble, they have a job to do and punishment can be severe. Don't screw them over by disobeying the rules, or perhaps you will end up like Otto Warmbier. He is an example of what not to do when traveling to the country. Please keep in mind the rules when traveling to the country. Yes, it is different there and no, I don't approve of the way their country is managed but that is not for foreigners to decide. Respect and follow the rules! It's not difficult.
They are unable to follow the rules. They consider themselves better than others. The USA and other Western countries hypocritically impose “freedom and democracy” on others in order to control it themselves. They impose sanctions, and then they say that poverty in these countries is because of the government. Dictatorship, only much more deceitful.
Otto was almost certainly framed. The supposed evidence of him stealing a poster doesn't even show his face. His roomates said he was in his room all night. He was an attractive all-American young man who was chosen by the NK government as a propaganda lesson to North Koreans and a taunt to the American government.
Some of the guides, especially the scenes with them in the very end of the video, give a feeling of self-consciousness. They get the jokes from the tourists that are jokingly trying to sneak away, they're explicit with the reason why this or that is not allowed (by showing this gesture at their neck). Just simple men doing their job, but helpless in their position. Maybe they're aware, maybe they understand what their elites have done to their country. It is a strange mixture of contempt and compassion that I feel towards these officials.
I hope maybe in my lifetime I’ll see the liberation of the NK People. Keeping up the facade of everything being fine is heartbreaking. The guides knowing damn well that 60% of the people live in abject poverty. The unfortunate reality is that bloodshed is almost certain. The regime will not go down without a fight.
It wouldn’t surprise me if American politicians secretly admire the dictator ship in North Korea seeing that a lot of the same things are starting to take form in America itself. saw a documentary some years ago about 'doctors without borders' (or a similar organization) - who had arranged for a group of ophthalmologists to go into NK to help people suffering from major vision loss due to cataracts and other degenerative eye conditions that had gone untreated for many years - some of these people were nearly completely blind and in most cases the surgeons were able to restore their eyesight - and as you would expect these people were emotionally overwhelmed once they could see again - and they gave tremendous thanks - but not to the surgeons - they effusively declared their love and gratefulness to "dear leader" (Kim Jong-un - or maybe at that time his father Kim Jong-il ) - but they barely acknowledged the doctors & nurses who had actually restored their vision - and you got the distinct impression that it was out of absolute fear that they were doing this - fear that if they gave thanks to anyone other than their "dear leader" - they would be severely punished ..
I saw this documentary aswell, awhile back. That was wild, the way they cheered and thanked their "dear leader". I feel like some of them were even crying for joy
That's shocking, to me it's the same when people thank a deity for something another person did, and they deny the person will to help them, and insted just praise 'God' 😂
I remember that doc. I watched it some years ago as well. one doctor did some like 3000 surgeries in a couple days. I will never forget, like you stated, all the people thanking their 'great leader' and never the doctor because in their mind it was all because of their 'great leader' that made it happen. I remember one older man, prob in his 60's, thanking the leading and saying something like 'I can now see the evil of Americans and I can kill them!" absolutely horrible stuff....
Fun fact- the USS Baltimore was never sunk and didn't even serve in the Korean war, it spent the entire duration of the Korean war in service in the US Atlantic Fleet and was only moved to the Pacific fleet again in 1955. The actual battle the tour guide is referring to involved the USS Junea, HMS Jamaica and HMS Black Swan where they sank several north korean torpedo boats for no damage and loss of life
But according to North Korea every naval encounter was a battle comparable to Pearl Harbor, The Battle of Jutland, and the Battle of Midway except that they won them all.
There’s just something so odd to me, seeing tourists smiling, happy, looking at going there as a “trophy” or something on their bucket list. While the people living there are suffering. Kind of like the tourists are having fun at the expense and lives of the people living there. I couldn’t imagine going there, and having “fun”. It would be an experience, but a sad one to me. Not knowing what happens to these people once they leave, it’s heartbreaking.
Same here. I mean, I understand maybe wanting to visit Chernobyl or..some other place where sadness has happened. And I'd still feel unbearably sad there. But where actively people are surpressed and then looking into their faces perhaps, seeing a forced smile and eyes that have no hope left of a better future, people stuck with their loved ones on the other side (South Korea...) I would likely breakdown halfway through the street and start shouting at people that I will somehow get their letters and messages across the border and godknowswhat. I can't watch that happening without intervening, I'd be a horrible spy. Not to mention, we were talking about enjoying the holiday, that would be impossible.
I totally agree. Also the way the narrator speaks makes me feel uncomfortable. Everything seems a bit despondent and the tourists seem as frivolous as it gets. I did not enjoy the documental.
They are starving because of the sanctions we put on them. We are basically starving them out until they drop their nuclear program and let us put military bases there so we can watch China. The Victorious War Museum in Pyongyang, North Korea, has several exhibits that claim the Baltimore was sunk by Motor Torpedo Boats belonging to the Korean People's Navy on 2 July 1950. Exhibits include a poster and the "actual" boat which supposedly sank the American cruiser. However, the ship was in the U.S. Navy's decommissioned reserve from 1946 to 1951 before being recommissioned and assigned to the Atlantic Fleet. In 1955, the Baltimore was transferred to the Pacific Fleet two years after the end of the Korean War. The actual battle involved USS Juneau as well as the Royal Navy's sloop HMS Black Swan and cruiser HMS Jamaica. Together they destroyed several North Korean torpedo boats without loss or damage.
The truth doesn't matter? What is drilled into someone's head becomes 'their' truth?? It's like cult members...everyone can see the truth ...they choose not to.In the case of North Korea, some MAY know the truth but choose not to speak out? I'm sure more of how the west live gets through to these people but what can they do with the information?? They can't even leave the country? Blind belief is a dangerous thing.
I LOVE this narrator! His dry wit & sarcasm are a nice change from the usual. It’s quite obvious how much he loathes the regime, calling it a dictatorship at every chance.
It is a dictatorship.. it is what defines it. A monarchy is in essence also a dictatorship, but instead of suppressing, control and ruin a country, they want to make it prosperous. Still a sole rule controls a entire nation. Putin is generally also a dictator, but he still has a sort of deputy minions. So that is a autocracy. They can all be called regime, since it's made so that the people doesn't have much freedom of speech or choices
I’m a doctor from South Korean army. My grandfather’s from North, a refugee from Korean War. This video made me mad. Dictators from North made millions of refugees and casualties. But they didn’t get any punishment, lived luxury life in return for starving people. I’m thank for living in free capitalsm country, hope people from North live “humanly” life soon.
I sympathize with your grandfather's experience. I come from Chinese mainland. Under the control of the Chinese Communist Party, we are almost the same as North Korea, but we are as helpless as the Korean people. We can't change this situation at all. We can only hope to change the social system that is no longer applicable to modern human beings with the help of other countries.
I can't get over how stereotypically dystopian they are. It feels like a joke until you remember that people suffer through this system every day. Then it just becomes pathetic.
What cracks me up is how much during the Korean War the north "fought" so hard for what they thought was freedom only to end up making that same ountry their own prison

But he stops the tourist from going out completely giving up his own fake role and reveling that he’s part of the guard- how do they think it’s normal? Do they think the outside people are so dumb they won’t think “wait why the fuck do you care what we do? Aren’t you just a villager?!?”
i felt so scared whenever they asked the tour guide such risky questions she seemed so sweet though, but still one wrong step could risk your entire life
Most of those tourist intentions for going to North Korea are either to diss that country, or to feel lucky they weren't born there, or for pumping adrenaline; being a daredevil, certainly not for sightseeing... also some of those tourist really being irresponsible and selfish, they're not just threaten their own life by doing what they weren't supposed to, but they're also endagering those guide's life and his/her families.
And they are probably more compliant and there's no crime that they are committing crimes. They have to be perfect but yes it's definitely like a jail in a way.
@ACEKING It's going to be a liberal socialist country just like the rest of the world. The royal family will rule the political world and the Rothschild family will rule the economy. That's the New World Order.
Are there any wild animals in NKorea? I have not seen even a bird! Seeing that poor old woman cleaning stones just broke my heart!! I hope these poor people are set free some day soon. It is so hard to see this, knowing that one man has that much control over an entire country and causes so much suffering is just beyond belief.
@@helenclark7876 Well, that's about the most terrifying thing I have ever heard of. Do you have any evidence to back this up? Just doesn't sound right.
@@helenclark7876 Wouldn’t it be better to fatten up an animal before you kill it.? Doesn’t make much sense to starve it. All you would have is skin & bone.
The one thing that truly broke my heart & filled me with ire @ the same time...the poor woman polishing rocks that was told to kick rocks because her looking poor is an ugly sight in the middle of perfection.
The two things that made me shake my head: the lady directing imaginary traffic and the fact that people actually got on that scary plane to go to the north
They have squads to move the puddles off the roads because they're roads weren't engineered to drain the water on their own like they are in developed countries
Other than the woman seeing her father's homeland & her friend accompanying her...you mean the equally scary _people_ who got on that plane to go north?
@@TheAnnoyingBoss If they have poor people "cleaning stones" who have to be moved from camera view, then road-water-movers are certainly believable. Imagine how _poverty stricken_ a country would have to be to have the man-power to clean stones & remove water puddles. Positively prehistoric.

Well, other nations are awful inside yet they look good on the outside. One might argue that the North Korean regime is not too intent in falsifying reality.
I wouldn’t be surprised at the beginning of the guard telling them to go back to the hotel is actually being nice about it because he knows if they leave they may not be allowed to ever go home I wonder how many North Korean guards are actually sympathetic to the people they imprisoned and try their best to make sure as little people get arrested as possible because I’m pretty sure he had every authority to arrest them just because they left or we’re trying to leave
@@李谷雨-e9cI don’t think he was saying that the guard would arrest them. He was saying the guard was preventing him from making a mistake by going outside alone. A mistake that can get him in trouble and he would probably be imprisoned in North Korea for that mistake

I've never been to North Korea but I got to speak with a few North Koreans who are sent to work here in Southeast Asia. This was a few years ago before the pandemic. One of them told me they come on 2 year contracts and get to go home for 15 days. Most of them looked miserable but once in a while I'd talk with someone who was a bit more spirited. They're willing to talk about anything except politics because politics is pretty much their entire existence back home. They only lived on the work premises and were no doubt being monitored, but they seemed a lot more free and open to talk with foreigners abroad rather than the carefully scripted tours that happen in North Korea. I feel sorry for this country really.
This documentary brought back many sad and terrifying memories of my childhood in Cuba under Castro's Communist Regime! From the huge signs all over, the constantly piped music, the indoctrination in the schools from the earliest stages. Parents had no jurisdiction over their children, they belonged to the Regime! The constant fear of saying a wrong word or doing something that, even if totally innocent, could be misconstrued as anti-regime attitude. The hunger, the darkness. No words can adequately describe the dangerous and suffocating environment in which we barely existed! After watching this I feel the old knots in my stomach and throat. The heaviness in my heart. This can never be forgotten, not ever after 60 years of having escaped the nightmare that was life in Cuba in search of freedom!
What you’re describing sounds very much like what USA is trying so hard to become - poor education, banning of books, the constant ballyhoo of political parties and the waving of flags both of the actual country and of the vanquished confederates, the stripping of human rights which seems to be determined to become more widespread, the non acceptance of an election result even before the election is held if it doesn’t go your way!
And people say communism/socialism is a good thing, and that it'll save us. Their lies are apalling. Edit: this is against communism, not for it. Get the hell out of my inbox commies
What I want to say is that the videographers were too arrogant. It was a good thing that they tried to explore, but they made things difficult for the staff and did not provide post-technical processing for the staff to protect them. Many ordinary North Koreans are powerless with their lives. The staff that these tourists can encounter can only do things according to the procedures. The consequence of not complying is death. The behavior of the visitors is really embarrassing for these ordinary people. They have no way and cannot give the "democratic answer" that the video shooter hopes to see.
One of the better posts here - you certainly are a lesser breed of anglo-saxon coldwar crackpot. UNfortunately N.Korea has more freedoms than you. Free homes, no homeless, no poverty, free energy, free education, free medicine, none of which you have. The consequences for you is the risk of an early death. So sad. But then you and your handlers are brainwashed into thinking you have "freedom". Tell us what other freedoms you might have, the best are already taken.

South Korean here, you needn't worry about NK messing with people actually in SK. The 'border' that normal people can access is definitely South Korean territory as any other place in the country. People can tour the DMZ (as seen as in 12:00, just from the South side) but nothing ever happens there, as any wrong move is effectively a declaration of war.

I saw this documentary aswell, awhile back. That was wild, the way they cheered and thanked their "dear leader". I feel like some of them were even crying for joy

What an absolute hell. Makes you become more grateful for the life you have outside of this dystopia. Huge thanks to the French group for having the courage to share this footage.
Most hells are inside peoples head: outside of the outside world..depending on the life you’ve been dealt.
Well, other nations are awful inside yet they look good on the outside. One might argue that the North Korean regime is not too intent in falsifying reality.

Yeah I got a strange feeling when I sad that.
The guards’ task is to avoid them leaving the hotel, not to arrest them.Guards were just doing their duty well
U R too young too simple
@@李谷雨-e9cI don’t think he was saying that the guard would arrest them. He was saying the guard was preventing him from making a mistake by going outside alone. A mistake that can get him in trouble and he would probably be imprisoned in North Korea for that mistake
The guard would also be punished for failing to follow orders from his superior.

It amazes me that the tourists do not take long to not be able to lose track of the difference between well behaving children and brainwashed.with their only other choice in life being starvation and death for them and their family.for that woman to bow at the dictator and see nothing wrong with that is appalling.she appears to not be paying attention.

What a nightmare... It's amazing how the military themselves don't rebel en masse!
Why has that not happened????? Seems like the logical thing to do. Are they so brainwashed that they can't see beyond their nose? The people are good but so naive to what is happening around them. Just like having to bow down to that FAT ASS PIG every time they see a statue. STUPID!!!!
They are brainwashed, they do not know they live in a horrible country.
They don’t know how bad they have it in comparison to the rest of the world. They think they are at the pinnacle of human social and technological expertise in the world.

I feel sorry for this country really.
son bien nacionalistas y esta bien no quieren extranjeros que pueden ser espias ya que ellos estan en desarrollo de armas nucleares es logico
No, Cuba was never this totalitarian.
does it worry you that people like Bernie Sanders and his supporters actually praise Castro for Cubas health care and public school system?

My son is studying in South Korea and I have begged him not to go anywhere near the border. It’s simply horrific the way they torture and execute people. Only today I read about a 17 year old executed for watching a South Korean movie. It really is barbaric the way they way they treat people including foreigners
North Korean shenanigans have only happened on North Korean soil or sparsely populated islands near the border until now.
I'm also happy to answer more questions if you have any!
Well, just adding, South Korea and North Korea border is not like the Balkans
These Asians are discreet, reputable, and uncombative on the border
But just like that person said, skirmish happened, but only on no man land/unhibited islands, mostly tens of KM away from the DMZ
