The stance of the church has always been that you are saved by grace through faith and that works alone do nothing to help you. For some reason, he hated the idea of faith only being true faith if you also do good in the name of God. Luther was insane. He disliked the idea of purgatory, so he managed to remove several books from the OT. He also disliked the idea of needing to do any works, so he attempted to remove the books of Hebrews, James, and Revelations but he thankfully didn't succeed.

When Bibles became available to regular people in the 16th century, a lot of them were like “hey wth why is the church literally not doing any of this” and decided to split off from the Roman Catholics! Now Protestantism still isn’t perfect by any means, (especially in America), but there ARE good churches that preach the real gospel of Christ without all of the extravagance that you see in all them old Cathedrals. (Like many 3rd world countries that just have church in houses or simple buildings!)

@Biao Wang Martin Luther had some severe misconceptions about what his own church taught. The stance of the church has always been that you are saved by grace through faith and that works alone do nothing to help you. For some reason, he hated the idea of faith only being true faith if you also do good in the name of God. Luther was insane. He disliked the idea of purgatory, so he managed to remove several books from the OT. He also disliked the idea of needing to do any works, so he attempted to remove the books of Hebrews, James, and Revelations but he thankfully didn't succeed.
