Can we all agree that we've had enough super hero movies over the last 15 years and we want more historical epics
Yes! Originals, not sequels, from Scorsese, Chris Nolan, ridley Scott, Tarantino (😢), Wes Anderson, Zach Snyder, David Fincher, Aronofsky, Denis Villenueve and I'm sure there's plenty more I'm forgetting.
Watch Dirilis Ertugrul, Kurulus Osman, Uyanis Buyuk Selcuklu, Alparslan Buyuk Selcuklu, Barbaroslar, Hayreddin Barbaros, Payitaht Abdulhamid, Mendirman Celalouddin, if you want history epics. Very nice
So much this.
I agree! Isn't it crazy that after all these years, we still do not have a historical movie covering the rise and fall of arguably Rome's greatest enemy ever; Hannibal of Carthage?

@@ad3mn Not doing well at the box office doesn't mean much, he's had a lot of stuff that didn't do overly well when it was released. They've all been masterpieces though. Yeah bro music is epic
I missed historical spectacles so much. Early 2000's were a time of big-budget historical movies and they were all magnificent, and to this day remain classics, but for a solid decade that genre nearly came to a halt. They are slowly coming back and I love it.
It's so bizarre -- historical epics seemed to largely die out around the time of Master & Commander, and Kingdom of Heaven. But they should be an absolute CONSTANT in cinema! History is a bottomless well which Hollywood can tap; it should be a no-brainer. Hopefully Napoleon ushers in a new wave of historical epics.
Very true. It's just very difficult to make films like that and there's only a handful of directors who want to make them.

I was sceptical about this movie..£20 to watch a film that makes an absurdity of Napoleon's main feature, his battles. The second I saw a rifleman with a scoped rifle perched on a rest and taking a pot shot at a sword wielding Napoleon at Waterloo....I wanted my money back. Has Hollywood lost it's marbles ? Did they forget to hire a historical advisor ? Such a damn shame, one of my all time favourite films dealing with the Napoleonic era is the Duellists, a Ridley Scott film, this is a shocker ! You'll learn nothing about Napoleon's battle's by watching this film. I can't get my money back I don't think, don't lose yours.
Yeah it's a travesty.
Around the same time as these trailers came out I left a comment on one of them, likely this one, about the wrongful portrayal of Austerlitz.
A few days later I received notice of a comment that got reported and deleted, and I was threatened with an account ban. Now I check both trailers again just to see if I got any replies on the comment and yep, gone.
Good job Sony.

Having attended the 200th anniversary commemoration of Waterloo in 2015, what I realised all films of the battle get wrong is that it was, and still is, a working farm. The battle was right on the solstice and the crops were nearly waist high. At the reenactment, we were wading through the barley, and the ground was uneven as the fields had been ploughed. Films always show the battlefield as more like a golf course.

@@mariokartpro7406 How do you know? Were you at the reenactment? One of the things that surprised me was the actual Fog of War we experienced. There were only allowed to be 6000 to 7000 reenactors in total (compared to over a hundred and eighty thousand at the actual battle), yet at times in the bottom of the valley on the battlefield, the gunsmoke from the muskets was that thick, the only way to see where other battalions were was from the muzzle flashes as they let off a volley. @@ji8044 exactly. even up until his death, he looked very young and fresh. and with time he got relatively fat. it was only on his deathbed that he started to look 'old' and even then too he only had sunken cheeks.
also, phoenix's portrayal makes him seem like a ruthless, cold blooded ruler. he was very ruthless at times, but id say 95% of the time he was extremely energetic and usually jovial (joking around with his men etc).
lmao everyone with french accents except naploeon

Bro really said he was built different

There has been a lot really good napoleon depictions in the past, and this looks like another winner. Napoleonic is my favorite period and Joaquin Phoenix is one of my favorite actors. I didn't ask for this, but I'm so glad it's happening.
"Death is nothing, but to live defeated and inglorious is to die daily." ~Napoleon
That's probably why the exiled him rather than executed him. He had a lot of time to think about his arrogance and mistakes. I hope people don't forget that Napolean is a villain. He was brilliant but he was quite evil.
@@GizmoMaltese It looks obvious to me that they didn't execute him because they didn't want to send the message that it is ok to execute a monarch.
@@GizmoMaltese Are you saying his enemies weren't also evil?
@@GizmoMaltese To me napolean was a survivor who was against europe who just wanted to hold onto their past like candy and he was threatening to take it
@@GizmoMaltesegave it to the Brits hard and dry, so can't have been all bad.
I don't think even a 4 hour movie can be enough for all of the emperor's greatness
Agreed! Especially considering that the 2002 TV miniseries starring Christian Clavier as Napoleon was almost 6 hours - and not even that managed to cover all the major events.
Abel Gance's has more than 6 hours and covers only the pre 1895 events i believe
@@Latinkon Yes! Thank you for mentioning the 2002 miniseries. Clavier's take was hands-down the best depiction of Napoleon (and Isabella Rosellini as Josephine as well). I think if you combined Clavier's wit with Phoenix's gravitas, you'd get the perfect Napoleon.
Someone said the director's cut will indeed be 4 hours long.
@@travis07ful 1795 I think you mean.
The great Napoleon once said: "If there's ever a movie made on my life, I want Joaquin Pheonix to play
I haven't been this hyped for a movie in so long
This looks amazing I can't wait. The fact that Ridley Scott is in his 80s and able to make amazing looking film just shows his mastery in cinema. Too many young director rely way too much on special effects and what "modern audiences" want they aren't original anymore. It's sad that in 2023 we still look forward to films by Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton, Guillermo Del Toro, M Night Shyamalan to name a few. Directors that have been creating movies for decades now but still able to bring us that magic movie experience that we just don't really get with younger directors.
E
bro sneaked in shyamalan like we wouldnt notice
you forgot Denis Villeneuve
Well…there’s nothing we can do except wait for this masterpiece…
Napalion bonapard 😮😮
I low-key wanna see Joaquin Phoenix play every other emperor who saw their empire as successors to Rome
- Justinian I of Byzantine Empire
- Charles V of HRE
- Mehmed II of Ottoman Empire
- Ivan the Terrible of Russian Empire
There’s already some guy who plays Mehmed and he does a pretty good job.
Putting Justinian, who was an actual Roman Emperor, in the same category as these charlatans?
What, you slept during history class?
@@thatwasprettydecent7497 Well Mehmed ended the Byzantine Empire and Charles was no joke so perhaps u were the one 💤
Which is completely different to what I said.
The Byzantine Empire wasn't a succesor state, it WAS the Roman Empire.
He wrote down a list of people who all ruled different and distinct countries.
Mehmed ruled an empire vastly modified from the one he conquered and the HRE wasn't Roman in the slightest.
Putting Justinian in this list is just wrong.
(Queen) Victoria, Empress of India. would be his greatest role.
Joaquin Phoenix is the best there is. He has this thrilling reality about him that you seldom see in films these days. I had the good fortune of working with him as an actor in Hollywood, and he was a joy to behold. Modest, thoughtful and a remarkable talent.. Hollywood could take a lesson from him..
He's sort of an echo of Marlon Brando..
cool
@James, Thank you for your "cool" comment.. Indeed, he is. All best..
i meant that’s cool that you act and stuff but joaquin is def cool too haha
@James, Many thanks on your kind words. Indeed, Joaquin is also "cool".. All best..
I do have a feeling that my older brother wants to see this one he loves to learn about history
The cinematography is insane. Ridley never disappoints!
Only once, that "Robin Hood" flick was a fail.
Prometheus and Alien: Covenant were embarrassments to everyone involved in those projects.
@@sunworshipper6163I honestly liked that movie.
@@ClunytheScourge1 Prometheus was good
@@Abhishek__Parihar you have low standards, buddy.
Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and now Napolean, all of them are historical movies, and all of them are amazing.
And all three are true stories. A lot of true story movies this year. Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon, and even Ferrari.
Can't fucking wait, never been this hyped for a film in awhile. Scott and Phoenix reunited once again
The film wasn't without fault, but it was refreshing to see an historic epic with superhero films dominating cinema for so long
And to think Ridley Scott is well in his 80s
superhero movies have been in the cinema for a while now it is refreshing to see something new i do prefer war movies
Can’t wait to watch this one on the big screen. Pheonix’s performance is phenomenal just through the trailers, and the Battle of Waterloo is just making me even more excited.
The Movie Waterloo is an epic too, hope this movie could be as gr8
E
If they do include Waterloo, it has big shoes to fill. Waterloo (1970) had 15,000 extras so it really felt like a gigantic battle with cannon shells and huge masses of cavalry.
As soon as black sabbath starting playing I got chills & goosebumps ❤

As a history lover this is a masterpiece can’t wait to watch in cinema.
def put a review for where Hollywood embellished parts and got accurate.
no respect for history ...
Bro you are not in a history class, this is gonna be an epic movie
@@xdavvidx history would be more epic when did you saw an army of 350 000 soldier in a field now you got less than 1000 and when u need more you just copy and paste you get robbed of the epicness of things ... 1970 waterloo was more epic with alot less budget ... Reality beat fiction every time that why movie like the og jurassic park was so better you knew the t rex was real not fake cgi of the latter plus 20 years of battle, polytics in about 2 hour will be a jumpcut nightmare
@@jessicalacasse6205 bro you don't know how to make movies, you just sit in front of your pc and write dumb comments on the internet - that's easy huh? Cinematography has grown technologically so they use it and you can't even tell which soldiers are real and which copied. Nobody focuses on that during the movie and nobody cares about it unless it looks epic. I would like to see you pay money for 350 000 actors playing roles of Napoleon's soldiers lol
