My only concern is, how the hell do you capture a career like Napoleon's in one movie? Over a period of 25 years, he literally led one of the most interesting lives in history, during one of the most interesting times in history.
Countless movies and miniseries have focussed on just a few aspects of his life, and the French Revolution that precipitated his rise to power. More books have been written about him than about anyone else, ever.
it's gonna be a LONG movie, plus it'll only highlight the important stuff
You can't, films are made for entertainment purposes only and should be taken as that only, yes you can can have a film that is based on a true story or true events, like this one. @@otissarge-dv8yh I just think that a miniseries, which Ridley Scott could no doubt have gotten all the $$$ he wanted for, would better serve Napoleon’s story. Every dramatization of his life I’ve ever come across has been a miniseries, unless it’s about a specific event.

This movie doesn’t seem to do a very good job at capturing his most intense traits nor his massive epic story. Napoleon was so repulsive that he couldn’t get a wife. He was gross. Napoleon was 1,68 m tall. The story that he was almost a dwarf was british propaganda
I like Joaquin in terms of acting ability, but he's way too old to portray Napoleon before 1812, much less before becoming emperor. The man is literally three years younger right now than when Napoleon died on St. Helena. He's older than when Napoleon fought at Waterloo.
Honestly, someone like Adam Driver might have been able to make it the whole film (assuming that it's going from the execution of Louie XVI to his coronation, about eleven years) without seeming too old or young sans any touch-ups, but even that's kind of a non-optimal pick.

I left the cinema with my breath still heavy from the scene of The Battle of Austerlitz and my heart still in my throat from the scene of The Battle of Waterloo. While it might have not been as historically accurate and battle-oriented as this trailer suggested and we expected, it did Napoleon’s legacy justice with that exact feeling of shortness of breath and your heart in your throat. The movie was exceptionally made. Wonderfully cast, fantastically acted by Joaquin, phenomenally scored with tracks perfectly fitting. The cinematography of the film kept me in awe with each new set introduced and the realism of each and every single gory detail never failed to make gasp at least a little.
The film might have not told Napoleon’s story perfectly accurate, but it did get the greatness of his legacy across. And I think, that for the people that do not have as much historical knowledge to be able to point each inaccuracy out and ruin it for them, this movie showcased the great impact of Napoleon enough. A great movie for a great leader.
What exactly was the legacy and the impact of Napoleon then, that the movie showed? I mean, what impact did Napoleon have on history?
@@josefavomjaaga6097 Well, at LEAST the impact of the wars he led on the population of Europe, which were shown before the credits. That is the most obvious one. Apart from that, though, the overall message of the film was the reason to make the film itself. I can confidently say that for people who might have not known much about Napoleon before, after watching the movie they definitely do have at least an idea about the massive importance that he played in the world’s history. I showed this to my grandfather who solely knew that Napoleon was a French leader and somewhat famous, and after finishing the movie, he said he never knew he was that big. So that is what the movie showed, and while it could have shown more, I think it’s enough.

Why do people dislike the movie.
It literally tell us their historical story based on napoleon.
It’s historically inaccurate
Because it's an awful movie. Boring and inaccurate.
It takes too much time on th relationship between Napoleon and Josephine
This came out of nowhere... and looks incredible. As a historical figure, Napoleon is quite worthy of this sort of Hollywood treatment. I'm surprised it took this long to get it, but am happy we're here.
Not Hollywood treatment, Ridley Scott treatment !
There are been more than 25+ movies about Napoleon. I'm surprised hollywood execs put so many money on this one in 2023 (it was also a Kubrick's dream). Because the character has lots of ambiguities, no lazy scripting will be tolerated.
@@dylan2sticks957 Who is a hollywood like the rest of them
@@dylan2sticks957 A good distinction.
This looks so good. I'm especially excited to see how they will portray his coronation. I think the huge painting depicting the event is one of the most impressive works of art ever, and from what I see in the trailer, it's gonna be a well made sequence.
They nailed it with the imagery of the Sphinx. Looks like Jean-Léon Gérôme painting came to life.
Every movie has to have muted colors and a drab overcast atmosphere now, directors do know the sun ☀ exists in real life right? I missed the part in history class where Napoleon was surrounded by gray clouds of mist everywhere he went...

This movie can easily be the movie of the year! Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix together is always a masterpiece. Simple as that!
Lol, there was only one other Ridley Scott movie that starred Joaquin Phoenix. So if you considered Gladiator a masterpiece, then I suppose technically your comment is true.
Oppenheimer 🙄
Its gonna be one of the movies of all time
I'm somewhat concerned over the amount of material this is trying to crush into the runtime of 'one' film. It seems to be covering most of his life. There's a real risk this is going to rush along too fast, not really giving due weight to the many significant events in his life, or that it might be a very uneven and cluttered experience. I don't think Ridley Scott is incompetent by any means...besides maybe what he did to the Alien franchise with Prometheus. But if this isn't handled carefully, it could be pretty terrible.
@@Curt_Randall I was referring to Gladiator yes and I do think it was a masterpiece.
"Death is inutile if you are remembered in the hearts of men." -Napoleon Bonaparte
I LIVE for Ridley Scott battle scenes. He's the king of them.
He is very good at them but not Akira Kurosawa good.
People not old enough to remember how the depiction of battles were changed by two directors in the 90's. Scott and Gibson. Before "Gladiator" and "Braveheart" the gore and grittiness of battle scenes was very subdued. It always felt more like a filmed theater play than a real battle. Then along came these two movies, and everything changed.
Not to mention Ridley Scott hasn't gotten the chance to showcase a proper battle scene for years now, this movie might be my most anticipated project ever.
“In life we are either Kings or pawns.”

Dumbass quote. There are still Bishops and Rooks and shit.

What does it even mean? In life we are just people. Just because a quote is attributed to some historical figure, doesn't mean, it means anything.
Napoleon looks incredible. The action sequences and atmosphere are to die for.
don't die please
It looks and feels like every other movie made recently.
And they didn't even make him black for absolutely no reason! That's because Ridley Scott isn't an idiotic American
@choupette-and-tatiana Because it's history ? I mean, movies are not made to take sides, they are meant to show you a story. Don't you learn about Napoleon in school books ? Now, you'll learn about it through a movie. As long as it doesn't make Napolean a flawless god, this movie is a good thing. People have to remember the greatness of our past, and it's horrors too. And really, the ugliness of what happened shouldn't be hidden at the expense of the beauty that used to live alongside it.
They shouldn't have picked a Jewish actor for a French icon, that's insulting. Should Caesar be played by a black man? It's a desecration of white culture.

I have been waiting for this for a long time. Napoleon's life story reads like a Greek tragedy. The battles of the age are epic. There is a reason that the period was named after this man.

there is already a good Napoleon movie. So good, that it makes me wonder if this one will live up to that level of attention to detail. Although that one solely focuses on Waterloo though, but it was a masterpiece.
Epic for those observing, traumatizing for those fighting.
