I went to uni at 21 after a few years of traveling and being completely anti-formal education. I haven't learned much at my university and gaining knowledge wasn't the main reason I went there. In the current system, to be seen and heard, to affect policies and have resources to make sustainable change, you need to be recognized by an academic community. Universities are a great starting point in case if you want to hold the positions of power in society, or if you want to be a researcher, but it shouldn't be seen as something everyone should do. And universities should not function as businesses, education should be free all over the world. Top schools should be for smartest students, not for richest. but I guess that's in the parallel dimension

Okay i do agree with some points but also university is WAY different across different institutions/colleges and especially countries. There’s a reason why some ppl go from some countries to other colleges in very specific countries, e.g. the Netherlands has a big influx of international students. And for instance liberal arts uni’s can provide a whole different kind of learning than the big 200-person lecture halls and video lectures. Uni isn’t for everyone, but to dismiss it out of hand is also not right. The fact that people just generalise all universities as a scam and useless is definitely harmful because university isn’t just for ‘positions of power’, its for learning and studying things that not only help with good jobs but also that you’re passionate about. And it can be a period inbetween formal strict school education and working the rest of your life. It can be a period of relative freedom and following passions. University is very flawed but its not inherently broken.

I would add to your comment, that having a degree shouldn't be the requirement for people to be seen and heard. That alone is a big problem in our current society.

I feel priviliged to live in Finland. Generally speaking, politicians strive to make education (including genuine universities and universities of applied sciences) widely available for everyone by making going to school free. It comes with a hefty taxpay though. But I'll gladly pay the tax to grant anyone else the privilige to gain free education, healthcare and income support.

I think if you are going to uni because your teachers or your parents told you to then don't go. Otherwise you will waste your money on a degree for a job you never even wanted. Secondary schools do a terrible job of giving students opportunities to try out a bunch of different jobs before they decide what they want to do with their life. About half of students end up dropping out of uni, with low-income students being the least likely (89% drop out rate). It's actually insane. A complete and utter waste of time and money. Consider yourself lucky if it worked out for you.

Growing up my Mom always told me to get a degree, any degree no matter how useless or silly. Her reasoning was that she had only gotten a diploma and as a woman she still struggles to gain respect from companies and colleagues, shes in a senior position at her work but still has to deal with young guys telling her to go make tea for them in a meeting. So as i woman ive always seen going to university as a ticket to respectability in the job market and not a ticket to get a job. A few weesks ago i was notified i made it into uni and im very glad to be studying something i love but it sucks how a degree seems like a requirement when it really shouldnt be

I dropped out of college because I was having mental health issues and I didn't want to go into debt. In the US, college is expensive yet in other countries, college is free. What i liked about it is that I learned new things that I never learned in high school. What I didn't like is how expensive it was and the advisors were not encouraging enough. The major I was pursuing would lead me to a low paying job, I wanted to switch my major but I don't wanna spend more time there. As of now, I feel better yet I really don't regret. I didn't watch those gurus because they're nothing but bigots and misogynists, what i did was following alternative plans by going taking online classes and planning on enrolling in a bootcamp for programming since it's my new goal. Is college needed, well for some things. A degree is needed if you wanna be a teacher, a doctor, a lawyer, etc, yet there are some careers you don't need college. Overall, I agree and understand where you are coming from.

Education is always an investment in your future viability in whatever field you find yourself in. Take it from a person who had to attend university in his forties because of dead ends reached in the labor force due to not having a degree of some type. Promotion and lateral movement within my former employment became all but impossible to achieve because I wasn't considered "future proof" from the credentialism that took over my industry. I hope that perspective helps explain why your degree is a worthwhile expenditure. Many of these gurus ignore survivor bias in their blanket statements about education. They can largely be ignored on this topic as a result.

Most of the anti-College guru millionaire billionaire types all came from wealth. It probably doesn’t make sense to go get a college degree. If you have family inheritance to invest in and wealthy family guidance to fall back on as you fail several times before finding investments that are going to make you millions. Most of us do not have those opportunities and thus going to a university to pursue a career is a better way to go.

I'm from slovenia and here we have completley free education incuding universities (besides living costs but we all still get some sort of scholarship). It's normal for people to not go to uni bc we also already have specialised secondary schools for a certain job so u can already have a job school done and get hired after secondary school but many still choose to continue studying in uni or bc they dont know what they wanna do they go to a general ap level secondary school and then go to a uni that would fit their career goals or at least interests. The thing is here, people go to unis bc they wanna have that extra education but for many many people uni gets WAY to hard and stressed and if u go into it when u dont even know what u wanna do u can mess urself up quite a bit. With no debt driving us to at least suceed and finish we still do it and embrace the fact that it is free but it's still not for everyone. I definetly think EVERYONE should have free higher education no matter what and find it bizzare the usa particularly has such HIGH fees when i see videos online of people just walking into lectures and not getting stopped? which open the tought on what are they actually paying for? Is it knowledge or a piece of papier aknowledging ur knowledge??

However I think because the internet is so broad in the amount and range of content it has I think it actually makes learning on a deeper level harder as, if we aren't careful, we don't focus our attention to the information we want or need to learn and instead get distracted and emotionally affected by endless opinions, the online news media, entertainment and so on.

Going to college isn’t necessary, if you have enough dedication, you can learn all the stuff to college can teach you. The only problem is the Internet isn’t exactly a world class educational system and there’s probably gonna be quite a few things that are just straight up wrong on there. Plus the way colleges and schools are set up, they don’t just give you the information, they give you the information and use the learning process to get that information to stay in your brain and get you to learn how to use that information.

as a highschool student I agree with this from my perspective I see kids talk about how school doesn't make you learn how to make money and when I heard this it kinda really gave me an output on what school really is. For me school is a place where we learn to perfect our skills such as learning, listening, understanding, communicating, speaking, etc. and I think that most of the things we learn in school we will not use in real life but its the way that we used our brains to solve certain problems or the way we used our brains in school is what we need for after school

What I do know is it'll be something different and something that challenges parts of me that are rarely used. That alone guarantees it'll give me experiences and teach me various life lessons that I currently don't know. After all the purpose of life isn't to avoid mistakes and fear. I should have gone back to school. When I was 20, the Great Recession hit - I found myself working low-wage jobs alongside people with degrees. They couldn’t find work in their field of study, and ended making as much money as I was, yet had massive student loans to pay off. That was discouraging; however, I’m sure many of them found well-paying jobs when the economy got better. I didn’t. I can’t.

I saw a lot of successful people dropping out of college and yet they're they are standing in top as the other successors who went to college before, it's funny really.

University is an institution of HIGHER LEARNING; if you have a weak education to begin with, you don't belong in university.
Everybody wants the social dynamic of going to a prestigious school, but that only existed because those minds were recognized as the best of the best or their family had connections.
If you don't have connections and you're not recognized among the best of your peers? Chances are you're wasting your money in university.
Trade school is the way to go; get yourself set up making money and figure out your schedule, and if at some point you are prepared for university? You have the resources and time necessary to succeed.
There's no shame in building houses; there's no shame in wiring buildings; there's no shame in sanitation clean up; there's no shame in A/C repair.
Any thing you do in life that contributes to the betterment of their community is nothing to ever be ashamed of (this social justice stupidity is not for the betterment of anyone other than corporations; that's a waste of energy).

I think they are correct and only a handful of degrees (they rarely argue against those) have any economic value as an individual or as a society. Mostly amongst Stem, business, law or medical
Fact is, a rich society can AFFORD to have a lot of university educated people in social sciences and the humanities art music etc.
They can afford that drain (both on the indiviual as well as on society) on their resources because they are doing so well economically-

A better option, in my opinion, would be to learn how to network attain the most valuable skills that are needed for the type of work you want to be doing.
