Yamaha SHS-10 - a mini FM keytar

- The SHS-10 "Sholky" (1987) is a 2-op FM synth in the form of a mini-keytar, with a pitch bend wheel and vibrato, sustain and portamento buttons in easy reach of the left hand on the neck. It has a MIDI Out port, which allows you to use it to control other instruments.
The lead line uses voice 32 Horn, making use of the vibrato and portamento effects and the pitch bend wheel. The main drum pattern used was 03 Fusion 2. The track starts with 01 Rhythm and Blues 2, and 02 Fusion 1 is used for a fill-in at the middle and end of the final solo section.
Big thanks to @musicbroth for the loan of this keyboard. They're a fantastic community music resource in Glasgow, UK, lending instruments and running workshops with a mission to provide access to music for everyone. www.musicbroth...

Im going to use this at church with a connected sound pack
Bravo! 👏👏
always a perfect sound from these good old keyboards...
Beautiful ❤
I am oh-so familiar with the sounds of the SHS-10 (the red one). That beefy kick and punchy snare and the accented hi-hat rhythm. Greatly/Lately-like bass and everything else with the vibrato and sustain buttons held down.
I love this keytar very much. I have owned the red version since 1989 and used it (and still use it) to play on the Amiga :)
it actually looks super fun i want one
Holding it like a guitar definitely puts a bit of fun into the performance
my first keyboard ever. Annoyed my parents with 24/7 last christmas
😆
Sweet

This is awesome!! So cool! Did you use the record feature on the actual instrument to layer it?
No, it's recorded to an audio interface / DAW then layered up. But all parts were played on the SHS-10.
@@alfonsemusic nice! You did a great job!! Do you know if you can plug the SHS-10 into an amp?
@@toucan037 yes you could, from the headphone/aux jack
Nice performance! Did you add any effects to the final mix? It sounds so good!
I always send each sound to a short reverb to give some depth and stop it sounding too dry - also a longer reverb on a couple of parts ( e.g. Steel Drum) to help it ring out. Then the whole mix goes through mastering software.
And also on this tune I layered the kick drum with a fatter sample to add some more low end in the mix while keeping the overall character of the sound.
@@alfonsemusic Ok, ok ☺
Nice job, with this technique your sound goes one step further, thanks!
The fact that so many people shit on the SHS 101 calling it a "cheesy toy" and such upsets me.
I have two, boxed, bought from Woolworths at a clearance price.
Will I ever sell them? NO NO NO 😁
ayeeeeeeeee

More play good songs with SHS 10 . please
were you using midi sound or the sound basic?
All sounds were from the keyboard, recorded to a computer as audio, not playing other sounds via midi. I have done another video where I used it as a midi controller, though:

I want to know if exist a keytar that i only connct with an amplifier and no more. Like some keyboards. Or I must alqays connect it with a computer, internet, oder etwas? Itßs possibly with this?
Yes, you can use an audio cable to connect this direct to a PA or amplifier. It also has a built in speaker.
@@alfonsemusic Thank you!
Alguem sabe se é possivel reprogramar e colocar algum som atual como guitarra e sax que soa como os verdadeiros instrumentos, como os teclados novos, se alguém souber me diz ai, se dar para fazer isso via cabo midi, utilizando algum software e etc.
HELP! My SHS-10 is not working right. When I turn it on it just loop something that was recorded and no keys or button do anything. Any idea what I should do? Thank you
