He didnt want to convert you, this is strictly forbidden in judaism, he just gave you material so you can learn more about rabbi nachman since you came to his grave. You cant even "just" become a jew like a christian becomes a christian or a muslim a muslim. The only thing "close to converting" is rabbi teaching about the 7 laws for non jews. Basically everyone is part of the jewish religion or can be a part of it, a god fearer, if he wants and keeps the 7 laws of noah.
You should've asked where the star of David (or Remphan) comes from.
While Uman has become a very popular place for pilgrimage, it isn't the most Jewish city in the world outside of Israel. Brooklyn, New York, has a larger Jewish population all year round.
Mezhybuzh and other places in Ukraine receive Jewish pilgrimage, just not in the fashion of Uman.
Regarding what the man says, a chronology correction: R. Yehuda Loew, the Maharal of Prague was born in 1512, and passed away in 1609.
Rabbi Nachman of Breslev is a descendant of the Maharal, but also, most notoriously, he was a great grandson of R. Yisrael the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of the Chasidic movement.
If you have a chance, go visit his synagogue and burial place in Medzhybizh.

¿ The hairstyles are biblical ? I'm no expert, but I'm not sure I've ever read that part or the indications regarding proper hairstyle. Perhaps there is, as I don't claim to be any expert or scholar by any means. In any case, the majority of original Judaic scriptures are corrupted in their translation and interpretation as the books we are familiar with and call 'The Bible' (Regardless what translation that may be) and perhaps to a certain degree, omissions are part of the final product as well. ¿ Who really wrote the Bible anyway ? I certainly don't have time to delve into so many extrapolations and interpretations of different takes of holy writ and journeys into explanations (some contradictory) that can never have a conclusive end or culmination. Hermetics are great and very intriguing, but in an average life that demands so much work and responsibility, that sort of knowledge and musings is better kept at the margins or left for recreation when time permits, but dedicating oneself in a religious sense to pursue the teaching and rules of intricate religiosity is impractical for most, which is why the relatively few are to be counted as pious and devoted practitioners.

Warum sollten die Seitenlocken Vorurteile schüren? Seit wann schürt eine Frisur Hass? Außer man hat schon vorher Vorurteile und benutzt Dinge als Bestätigung für den eigenen Hass. Die Juden gehen niemanden auf den Sack, außer man redet sich das ein und dann findet man sicherlich ein Haar in der Suppe, wenn man keins findet, dann wird man schon eins selber reintun, um einen Grund zu haben. Juden missionieren nicht. Sie laufen nicht rum und versuchen andere zu bekehren. Sie rennen nicht rum und bedrohen Menschen, wenn diese sich über Moses, oder deren Religion lustig machen. Da sieht es bei anderen Gruppen ganz anders aus und da kann so eine negative Bemerkung schon mal den Kopf kosten. Bei Juden muss sich keiner fürchten das einem gleich der Kopf abgesäbelt wird. Sie rennen nicht durch die Gegend und schreien "Moses ist Groß", oder "Gott ist Groß" und jagen sich in die Luft. Sie glauben das jeder Mensch ins Himmelreich aufsteigt (siehe die 7 Noahidischen Gebote - Google hilft). Im Christentum erhält man nur das Himmelreich, wenn man Jesus als seinen Erlöser akzeptiert. Im Islam nur, wenn man Mohammed als letzten Propheten und Gesandten Allahs akzeptiert. Das ist bei beiden Religionen recht exklusiv und schliesst andere Menschen aus. Das Judentum scheint auf den ersten Blick so fremdartig zu sein und genauso exklusiv wie die beiden anderen großen Religionen, dabei stimmt das Gegenteil. Es schliesst eben nicht andere aus, nur weil sie nicht an das Judentum glauben, sondern inkludiert alle Menschen und verspricht auch Nichtjuden den Aufstieg in das Paradies. Das ist das größte Missverständnis vieler Menschen, die die Juden nicht verstehen (wollen). Man hat oft schon mit der "Muttermilch" Vorurteile gegenüber den Juden eingesogen. Oft in der Familie negatives von klein auf gehört. In der Schule von muslimischen Mitschülern, in der Kirche, im Freundeskreis, etc. und schon hat man mit jungen 16 ein recht verkorktes Weltbild auf die Juden. Da hat man auch kaum Zeit und Lust sich zu belesen und auseinander zu setzen. Wenn alle das sagen, wird schon was dran sein. Dabei ist das Judentum die meist missverstandene Religion, weil Vorurteile, falsche Beschuldigungen, Verschwörungstheorien und andere Blödsinn das Hirn erreichen, bevor man überhaupt klar Denken kann. Ich kann nur einen englischsprachige Reportage auf UA-cam empfehlen, der einen tieferen Enblick in das jüdische Leben wirft. Peter Santonello macht hervorragende Reportagen über viele Gruppen und Minderheiten in den USA und der Welt. Er hatte eine großartige Serie über die orthodoxen Juden in New York gemacht. Kann ich nur empfehlen und man lernt einiges mehr.:

The side locks are an original Jewish hairstyle that can be dated to the Israelites of the Old Testament as Jews have a commandment from the Torah to leave the beard and side locks.
