We are having a giveaway very soon on www.strava.com/clubs/fastfitnesstips (have you joined)? ps.......Next week's video.....is all about bikefit tools. It's on patreon right now!
Your analysis didn't account for descent models. A climber descends nearly as fast as a sprinter. Within a couple percent, even if they weigh 20kg more. But the climber ascends easily ten percent faster. You can't normalize a stage at 2.5 percent grade. It's a bad model. But I hope you Got some sponsor money from making a video that's not very useful. 😅😅😅😅😅 In other words, descent times are about the same for sprinter groups as climber groups, but the uphill part, it's not even close. So the race model should look at mostly uphill, and ignore downhill, if you want to normalize the grade. And you forget another issue - sprinters are trying to save as much energy as possible, so they don't lose too much body mass that they need to win other races, later in the year. So they go as slow as possible. And if they account in their mind, for excess body mass loss, they may ride slow and get cut. And tell the sponsor they ate some spoiled food for breakfast. The grand tour rider can't win the other races, generally speaking. They have to give it everything in a grand tour, despite losses to body mass that harm their health. Also, electric motors affect outcomes 😅😅😅😅
The key factor is the Vo2max, climbers always are over 80, which means much sustainable power on long climbs for their weight. A Sprinter Vo2max is always lower, more around 70-74. Also higher weight and less training on their ftp and threshold power.
Lactate threshold is FTP.
Excellent quality analysis! 👍🏽
Great analysis as usual.
Another great video thank you
I would rather be a little slower on the climbs and not look like a crackhead.
I’ve heard professional cyclists referred to as “genetic freaks.”
@@connieback7577 Not only in Cycling but in All sports.
@@connieback7577 they starve themselves for years to adapt to a machine ..... And most use electric motors in most races....
"Those data"... finally someone who can talk stats. Bravo
I'm pretty sure they extended the time cut this year.
Makes sense but how do you explain Caleb Ewan? He suffers on the climbs too, and is very small, but he sprints his ass off on the flat stages. His physique suggests he'd be a great climber.
Although I enjoyed your video. I have a particular interest in the the physiological adaptation of sprinters and there ability to achieve simulate FTP’s to that of a climber. Although a pure sprinter can produce more power the sustained power is lower. That particular discussion does not seam to happen very well/often.
Kittal got dropped just outside of Annecy. I was there. I was on the inside of the hairpin watching. Sky was on the front, GVA, Sagan and Julian was in the break flying. Kittal came by and he stood. He was suffering so bad tongue out. I will never forget it
And yo outside running around chasing KOM in your local area, what have you achieved in cycling? I guess so,....nothing! Has guts to be talking shit about Kittel being dropped.
@@kay19833 what are you crying about
Cycling is such a complex sport, it's one of the few sports where almost no one is consistently on top for more than a few years. Every course works best for a particular rider's physiology, and they're all so high revving that it only takes one small thing to trip them up. The sport is so hard on the human body that it only has so much time before it breaks down that .05% that makes the difference between winning and finishing middle pack. Then someone else takes their place.
im kinda courious cuz im like sprinter and climber idk why am i like btw does it fine?
People tend to think cycling is cycling, and to be a' good' cyclist is to win a number of races, but the fact is there are multiple disciplines in cycling, and winning a race has a lot to do with how well suited you are too the particular course. The question 'what's the difference between a sprinter and a climber' is fundamentally incorrect, it should be 'what's the difference between a particular sprinter and a particular climber on a particular course with particular conditions'. Less catchy, but more accurate a question. Sagan is a brilliant sprinter but also can climb,Thomas is an excellent climber but also has great TT ability. The answer to the far more complicated question is itself more complicated, sufficed to say it's watts per kilo, V02 max, altitude training, aero drag, anaerobic training, aerobic training, fitness and fatigue among many other things.
You can over analyse some of this i think, generally speaking the considered natural climbers live and train in the mountains, their bodies and efforts are physically and psychologically conditioned to the efforts required for stage races .. the great GC riders focus training blocks on similar efforts for a specific reason and target .. its why the world pro Road race is so much more interesting, rarely do you get an undeserved winner, its hard, long, generally lots of climbing and gets progressively faster through the race.. but on any one day most top riders (by that I mean the best) regardless of whether considered a climber, puncher or sprinter, if properly prepared and are in superb condition can depending on ultimate ability produce a performance.
in fact why even have a time cut ?
can you do another video like this during the hey day of doping to compare the power to clean riders of today?
What clean riders?
I'm still waiting on "clean riders of today". dumb.
Clean! Lol!
Great info as always ... Much of it too tech for me.
I now know I need to loose another 15 kg to be quicker.
Ummmm.
What's the difference between triangle and a circle? like it ain't obvious that it's even unfair there is no weight category in cycling. it's like staging a fight between Deontay Wilder and Manny Pacqiao.
Life’s unfair men, that’s part of the sport to loose as much weight as possible and still push some watts just as classical dancing requires being thin or sumo being fat
I always ride uphill everyday, Does that make me a climber?
on stages over 2000 m climbing cut the fieldextra time.. not against the fastest climbers but an average peed of previous times maybe
My BMI is 17 (181cm and 57Kg), how can I gain weight? I swear I eat all the food I possibly can. I'm 20y old
Daniel M You need to gain the right kind of weight, that means muscle and possibly bone density. Off season Olympic style weightlifting and associated exercises. Squats are king!
Yeah weight training will do the job, I'm the same as you, 183cm/61kg. But would it actually improve your power? Idk probably not much
Eat more. That's it. Take whatever you are yesterday and eat it again today plus an extra sandwich. Do that for a week. If you don't gain weight, add two sandwiches to the same diet every day. Do another week. Etc.
Are you eating the correct food? If you want a more accurate amount of nutritional intake use a calorie caculator.
Just saying most people think qaunity of food is key, yes quanity matters but quality does too.
When will we be able to acess that app?
We are going to discuss an app thats does all this and possibly more in a few weeks...it will analyse your CDA on the fly from you normal head unit ride data with no special equipment
Why would any race want to disqualify any sprinter? They bring lots of action and interest to the races.
Nearly 5 W/kg for a whole stage.. Just insane.. I manage to hold that beraly just below 20 min and they do it for >3 hours...
Now you know they are on something right?
@@kay19833 Nah I dont know and tbh I dont care.
@@raphaeltiziani7476 You don't care about exactly what?
@@kay19833 if they dope or not. I would care to much I couldnt watch any sport.
@@raphaeltiziani7476 So, all athletes dope is that what you're saying?
how can someone be a climber or sprinter when starting on cycling
Try both. Sprint in flat then do climb on the mountain. See which one your comfortable
I am 56kg my FTP is 255W and my max sprint ever was 731... so I don’t know if I am considered a sprinter or a climber... I think my sprint is pretty good for my weight and age
Who is this nibaly guy 13:55 ?
The animations show the major problem with their riding. They are over straightening their knees :D
The tour always caters for the climbers. Finishing the days at the top of steep rides means that it is always going to be the sprinters (heavier riders) who get knocked off. If the stages started and finished at approximately the same altitude then the advantage of lighter riders would be mitigated. Want to make it fair. Base the bike weight for a rider on the riders weight. A 6.3kg bike under a 56kg rider is a much bigger advantage than a 6.3kg bike under a 75kg rider.
alaphilipe was fantastic, who cares about bernal
Great video but never completely sold on vegan cyclist logic
