  • What happens when a time trialling diesel motor (‪@nerocoaching‬) takes on a climber at a mountain grand Fondo? One thing is for sure, we are not leaving anything to chance in the MATE vs MATE showdown.
Hope you enjoy the recap of our experience of the event, one that we decided to have some fun and turn it into a one on one duel over the event.

I thoroughly enjoy Jesse Coyle's attitude of "I am good at this bike thing because I've spent years of my life getting good at it and I am quite talented". It's refreshing having people saying that their good anyway and it has taken years to get there. It's not about the latest tech, or the fanciest training strategy. You have been consistently training for a long time, and you don't try to bullshit us with some new miracle thing.

Top ride gents, great analysis. The only way Miller could beat Coyle would be for Miller to hide in a group then unleash himself past Coyle on the final climb. Of course Miller would need a hard working group, otherwise Coyle would just pull away - too much zone 2 training on Coyles legs. Now the event for this attempted demolition of Coyle is Peaks Challenge, plenty of high quality groups and if Coyle went too early ... Mt Hotham would have him eating sugar at Dinner Plain! Miller has gone up Mt Hotham at 1_15_33, quicker than Sam Hill and Jai Hindley, just behind Jack Haig and Mark O'Brien - I see no sign of Coyle on the segment, so this is Miller time. No sign of Miller or Coyle on Raspberry Hill (Back of Falls) segment, however this is where Miller's superior pacing up Mt Hotham should pay dividends with fast groups for both boys, this would be a live stream level event. Bring your pedal spanners folks.

A nice topic for the show would be: how do you open gels in the bike! Probably use your mouth, but getting a gel and opening it every 20 mins like Coyle did seems like such a chore. Like, fuel on a bottle seems more practical. I would get my hands all sticky with so many gels.
And the mate vs mate dinamic made for a really nice video!

It was a cold day + we both started with a disposable plastic 600mL bottle in our back pocket with water + an electrolyte tab which we drank over the first 1.5 hours. On the bike I had 1.8L of fluids total, just water with a couple of electrolyte tablets. So 5 hours, 2.5L of fluid total. Finishing slightly dehydrated is expected in a single day event.

nice watching it, remembers me my Gran Fondo with my friend.
However I have a qustion about caffeine, once I was talking gels with caffeine, but it's diuretic and i had to stop for a pee almost every 30 minutes... all gains were lost...
Now, I'm thinking about talking 200mg (could be that SIS gel) close to the end, so no probs with a toilet.
Don't you have problems with peeing after such amount of caffeine? (I drink a lot of coffee daily)
