I am an amateur but I've done 2 ironman triathlons in the past. On the second race there was a long section of inclined road where I was able to go over 70 km/h for about 250 metres. The bike did shake and I had a blurry tunnel vision. It was a frightening experience.
Time trial (especially triathlon bikes) have terrible crosswind performance, it’s like a giant sail, it’s why we don’t like to see people bring triathlon bikes to the group rides, (also the part where your brakes aren’t in the same spot as your shifters)

we got now to 56.792 km in an hour with "TopGanna" Filippo Ganna in his attempt. To be fair, there was a lot of technical advancement behind it and 3.2km are left for the 60 - but i believe we're witnessing getting there eventually in the next couple of years.
On a 250 meter track, that means somebody would have to lap Ganna over 12 times to do 60 kph.
@@cyclepowered8799 good analogy! But going with that, Ganna would have lapped Bradly Wiggin (2015 world record) also 9x on a 250m track. I am excited what comes next!
Instead of a 250m track we should build a 60km track 😅
With the same technology we only need an 18% increase in power to get to 60 kph. Absent a select breeding program, the probability of that happening is tending towards zero.

The sport was still in it's infancy, this is much harder. That's more like the 2h marathon.
Sports science didn't exist. It's all about the air really. The recumbent hour record is 56.7km for an unfaired bike and the record for a streamlined recumbent is an astonishing 92.4km with the rider actually facing backwards lying on his back for the ride!
Came here to say the same.
It's just that the bikes those cyclist use, are trash.
Get a proper bike, you'll go faster :).
Especially considering those recumbent record are not acheived by top of the top world class cyclists.
Nah
There is definitely something to say about the fastest human powered land vehicle. Not only for the top speeds, but recumbent bikes are so much more efficient that they are very good commuter vehicles.
@@xmtxx the problem with recumbent bikes is that they're not very marketable and very niche(and imo just look a bit silly). road bikes, gravel bikes and mountain bikes are popular because they all share the same or a similar riding position. they are what people know and love as true bicycles that can do time trials, hill climb races, tour de france style stage races, races on gravel or cobbles, crit racing, etc. it's much more exciting to see people get out of the saddle and put down 1000-1200 watts in a big attack off the front, and watch people immediately try to respond in kind. you can get more riders in a race to form a proper peloton, and watching them sprint at 1700-2000 watts at the finish is just a different level of excitement.

Good fan is a must on a trainer!
And yes, you definitely had a great experience with all these tests, measurements, bike fitting and some track fun!
Considering the total power is conceptually wrong because a different person has a different cross section and different mass. If a person weights 100kg and another weights 50kg, outputting 440W each would result in two different regimes. If you normalize the power output with the drag force of each athlete THEN you can make a comparison and find out what's the power you need to target.
Why did they ban a position. That's so stupid thow. The point is to go fast and they limit that.
Emil Krig true, especially considering you can ride a ton of different tracks too.
The fastest way is really recumbent bikes, which are truly aero. Technically these are still bicycles and they should make much higher speeds possible.
Not much mention Mr Obree in the video, built the bike by himself in the kitchen and BROKE THE HOUR RECORD against big money Chris Boardman. The Obree tuck is one of the most aerodynamic positions, try it next time you're on a bike
www.wolfgang-menn.de/obreepos.htm
When it comes to records, I'm sure they want to standardize the way it is done.
There will always be someone who figures out a way to bend the rules in order to gain an advantage.
So they probably want this record to be challenged by the fitness of the athlete as opposed to the improved technology of the bike itself.
Sounds like they didn't exactly "ban a position", just set rules on what shape the bike itself should be for the record. You obviously have to figure out some kind of standard rules on what the bike should be like for a record to make any sense.
In context, elite runners can run a half marathon (21.1 km) in around 60 mins. Cyclists are covering more than 2.5 times that distance. Humans have reached their physical limits in both the disciplines. But there has to be more potential for improvement in cycling, given the two wheels and the engineering involved (versus the bareness of running)
Average Squares the difference between those two distances are much closer than i would expect i know i can bike 5 times more distance than i can run in a given amount of time. This is because I run horribly but still.
Average Squares we haven't reached our limit of evolution. Soon enough a man will run a marathon under two hours. Every one thought a sub 4 minute mile was impossible.
"Humans have reached their physical limits" I heard that already before...
Before Usain Bolt
@@bngr_bngr I'm going to use a high VO2 max (as described in the video) as a value that would be 'favorable' to have for being capable to run a marathon well.
There is no evolutionary pressure on people with average vo2 maxes so you wouldn't expect the genes of people with a high vo2 max in the human population to become more common. It's a misconception that evolution improves a population in a way that it makes things 'stronger'. The thing that should be examined is the amount of viable offspring carrying whatever genes that by chance managed to proliferate the most.
Giant Bully I would assume someone that runs a sub 2 hour marathon will get more girls.

I've quit alcohol , I have no social life, no girlfriend, few friends, I'm dedicated mind body, soul. I think I'm making around 432 watts for 20 minute effort. I not to sure how accurate my power Meter is but figure as long as numbers keep climbing that doesn't matter.
I am gaining give or take 10 watts per month. I'm currently 85 kg 6ft 3 height. How on earth Bradley Wiggins made 69 kg at 6ft 3 is beyond me. I'm taking a different approach . I'm riding on feel and I've noticed. I'm not losing weight but I constantly am feeling new muscles growing so I'm thinking I'm designed for around 85 kg to 90 kg strong fit weight. I'm not training for hill climbs . I'm training exclusively for the 1 hour. So I'm thinking outright power for 1 hour means more value then watts per kilo to me. Alright so you'd need to put out 450 Watts for 60 minutes to crack 60km, which nobody can do right now. But that begs the question: how long can the best person keep up a power output of 450 watts?
Its more than just the wattage, its the watts relative to weight. 450 watts for Bradley Wiggins is going to get him further than 450 watts for a guy weighing 200lbs.
I'll bet Dean Philips and Ed Veal can come kind of close.
@@Lars3 These guys do probably weight EXTREMELY similar.
A guy who weighs 200 pounds is either too fat or has too much muscle, most probably and endomorph. These guys I'd guess are ectomorphs.
I think you may have misunderstood. It would take a lot more than 450 watts to go 60km in one hour. The best sprinters only just get under one minute for a kilo effort.
" most probably and endomorph. These guys I'd guess are ectomorphs."
oh shut up and lose some weight @@JMPERager
I wonder if it would be easier with a heavier bike. Of course, that wouldn't make any sense at first, but heavier means more stability, which would allow the cyclist to focus more on pushing and less on balance. (balance might not matter initially, but with more fatigue, balance gets harder and consumes more energy). Once the bicycle is up to speed, then the bike shouldn't lose energy on that smooth indoor track the way it would on the road, so although it would take more energy to get up to speed, the energy it takes to maintain the same speed should actually just be the same (assuming equal friction),, and perhaps if the bicycle is more stable, then balance would actually consume LESS energy (fewer wobbles), meaning more energy available for pushing forward.

I love the Almost Impossible series. Thanks Robbie.
Since air density isn't regulated I'm waiting for someone to make a sealed track, pump all the air out and ride in space suits. Aerodynamics is no longer needed and times will be far far faster with no air drag.
That will have to be an air conditioned space suit if they're also removing the cooling effect of wind...

@@jlw3306 No, it's a joke if he says "Why it's almost impossible to get 99 kills in one game of Fortnite" because it's pretty much never going to happen, but it's possible (Just like the video). It doesn't make sense if he says 100 kills because it's literally impossible.
Fortine coment on a video about the holly sport...😑😐
@Dzintra681 you're subscribed to a channel focused 100% on dragon ball z theory, leafyishere, filthy frank, and many other various anime-centric channels. you're definitely not in the position to be calling others "man-children". yikes.
This is such a great series!
Easy, get an H2R, that record will last four years. Then become Burt Munro.
Incidentally when Eddy Merckx went to Mexico city in 1972 and broke the hour record it was at an altitude of 7000 feet, so obviously his advisers knew there'd be less air resistance in the thinner air, but I can't help wondering if a downside was that there was less oxygen in the air.
Just go downhill
You live in the future my friend

Bro i love how good of a sport you are in every video lol
I'm sorry but the last time I rode a bike I went 60km/h easily...
ok it was a motorbike, but still.
Still a bike
Reaching that speed is not the problem. The problem is keeping that speed for one hour.
Try doing it on a normal bike for 1 hour
it was a joke...
@@reeennneee woooosh
if i get on the bike after eating 11 burritos i will go at least 200km an hour. ill be using natural NOS
Hahahaha. This made my day!
The effort is stupendous at these power outputs. It takes special genes to even try to get in shape for professional cycling. Aerodynamics are the villain here. Wind resistance increases as a square of the velocity. Above about 30 km/hr, the wind turns into a wall. Anybody who can push through this wall to 50 km/hr and sustain it is a special human.
Would be a dream to do these tests. I’d love to break this record
Have any of you ever seen the 100-year-old hour record? I mean a 100-year-old person doing an hour record in their own age group (of 100, lol). Robert Marchand, went 24.25km (15.06mi). Your average person can't ride a bike that fast, lol.
DRBTempleRocker I’m a 14 year old cyclist and my pb is 18.5 miles . Although I don’t have a super aero bike and I’m outside on a local park loop
I can bike 21 mph and im sprinter and I run faster then I can ride a bike
average men sprint 13-16 mph at running 12 mph not fast think twice I do 12 mph for 800 meter and im still jv 12 mph pace for mile is varsity
FAILED THE DRUG TEST THO edit no he didn't I got wrongly confused with someone else
@@cliveramsbotty6077 You confused him with the 90-year-old American guy that just got busted, following his recent performance. His name is Carl Grove.
Make no mistake pro cyclists are some of the toughest athletes on the planet.
They're real tough. It's even hard to get the needles in their arms.
Its the hardest endurance sport you can do

The Tour is definitely the toughest race in the world. I’m a mountain biker, so I’m not masochistic enough to be a roadie.
@@mtb416 - The Tour is not even the toughest cycle race in the world, let alone the overall toughest race. The other Grand Tours are usually more punishing, simply because of the characteristics of France, Spain and Italy.
The Tour only has more prestige, hence more attendance, viewership, hence more advertising, hence more prize money. But the competition is about the same, and the route is harder. You can't climb a Zoncolan, an Etna or an Angliru in a Tour because there isn't such mountain in France.
I remember pushing 27 mph on a cheap $100 cruiser-mountain hybrid. It was a kent glendale. But my energy burst was only like 10 seconds. Only maintaining 27mph for like almost 10 seconds.
Usain BOLT speed after 6Om
Not that I advocate changing the parameters, but it would be interesting to have an elite rider attempt it in a Milan SL velomobile. Or a fully faired two-wheeled recumbent.

I really don’t know about athletes but I never knew my real limit until my many different trainings as an infantry officer. They literally broke me and that helped me know myself better and better understand the limits of the human body and my personal limits also.
what is strange is that before doing it, you feel like you can do anything and you’re a beast...because you’ve never really tested your limits. And then you realize you ain’t terminator. But ironically you don’t get to do what you thought would be easy, you do less. But you still manage to impress yourself. It’s like deep inside, you always knew you were no god but never acknowledged it.
“ Its way harder when I watch you “
Ok buddy 👌
thanks i always wondered why i always did 59km in an hour not 60

It is clearly not impossible to ride 60k in one hour. The Italian rider Ganna broke the previous record by over 1k, covering almost 57k.
Imagine one of the record holders ride you for an hour.
Wow! I'm never imagined that is so difficult this sport, I always think it's just a question of all out power, in fact I'm not even knew the need of run for 1 hour! Great vid like always Wired! Thank you! :))
Credit should be given to Graeme Obree for inventing the "Praying Mantis" position and "Superman" position. He appears in the video but his name is not mentioned. Chris Boardman did not invent the Superman position, he merely used it to set his Hour record back.
you dont "invent" body positions. or we would be inventors in our drunken sleep.
@@bishplis7226 I'd say you can call it "Inventing" if it is discovered and perfected through research and testing and to fulfill one specific goal.
@@bishplis7226 how often do you drunkenly sleep on a bike while doing 60kmh?
You're very right to what you're saying, that was the first thing that crossed my mind when I first watched this video. Graeme Obree invented many things regarding cycling and the hour record indeed.
Hey... You're the one who taught me Cubing (Basic Method) and today it's you presenting another interest of mine... #Cycling...
