    All you have to is a couple of well placed canon rounds into the middle of the conning tower and in the pressure hull. This render it unable to dive and get away, then its like shooting fish in a barrel. Any U-boat will try to dive as soon as an aircraft appear either visually or by radar to disappear under the waves where they are safe from bullets.

    The 25lb AP rockets were designed for anti-tank operations, but turned out to be better against shipping than the 60lb rockets that were designed to be used against shipping, but proved better against ground targets.

      The 25-pdr rockets were designed to punch holes in the hull of a ship below the waterline. Ballistically, the were stable under water, so pilots were instructed to aim just short of a ship's side. The rockets would hit the water and continue on to penetrate the hull several feet below the waterline. Often, the body of the rocket would follow through, enlarging the hole, and sometimes starting fires from unconsumed fuel in the rocket tube.

    After experimentation the 25lb SAP rocket was found to hit the water then kind of level out horizontally just under the surface and if it impacts in just the right place would travel through a U Boat exiting on the far side, naturally no bilge pump could keep up with that kind of water ingress and the boat would have to surface or sink.

    With the amount of fire coming off the sub it should have sunk just from the fires also the flames are going to suck the air out of that sub pretty quickly.

      Haha. ED is still working on damage modeling for the aircraft. I'm afraid it'll be quite a while before we see any kind of realistic damage modeling for ships. :)

      Right! And I think he was worried about another player swooping in for the 1% kill credit. It would be awesome if DCS adopted some of GHPC damage modeling. In the future!

    Wasn't the mosquito designed for naval warfare and bombing?
    Strafe the length of the ship not broadside.

    • @StuartKoehl
      @StuartKoehl Рік тому +1

      The Mosquito was originally designed as a high speed light bomber, but proved to be amenable to multiple roles. And yes, while you strafe down the length of a ship, raking it fore-and-aft, the unguided rocket projectile were best fired at the broadside, the 25-pdr variety being aimed just short of the target, so as to punch holes in the hull beneath the waterline.

    If rockets with solid steel AP-heads are available for use in DCS, employ them against submarines or ships, and aim the rockets to hit into the water 5-15 ft. short of the target at a diving angle of about 20-25 degrees.
    When hitting the water, the rockets should normally go for a short while downwards at 20 degrees, before changing direction into a 5 degrees uppwards path, with enough energy to penetrate clean through the hull of the target submarine or ship below the waterline. I guess there should be some instructional films or old manuals about it on the net. Maybe search the UA-cam-channel of Periscope films for it. I think I read what I'm describing above in either vol. 1 or 2 of Clay Blair's 2 volume work on the Battle of the Atlantic.

  • @silenykralik
    @silenykralik 3 роки тому +3

    DCS is really nice piece of software and sim, but sinking sub with 20mm? HOW ?? :-D inner hull was strong and even larger cannons have issues with it. Except Tse-Tse with 57mm rollins cannon. In the opposite those rockets and different story - whole salvo can sunk she - if aimed good.

    • @Doc_3908
      @Doc_3908  3 роки тому +2

      I agree, though I'm not sure that the rockets, too, will be sufficient. But ED is still working on the aircraft damage models, so it'll be a looooooong wait before we see anything close to accurate DM of naval vessels.

    • @StuartKoehl
      @StuartKoehl Рік тому +1

      A U-boat's pressure hull is just 28mm thick, at most, and fabricated from High Tensile Strength (HTS) steel, not Rolled Homogenous Armor (RHA). So, a 20mm API round would be more than capable of punching a hole through the pressure hull, and even if it did not, it would most certainly rip open the ballast tanks wrapped around the pressure hull, which would render the submarine incapable of submerging (well, it might go down, but it would never come up). The RPs and the 57mm Molins Gun were not needed to sink a submarine, but were intended to sink the submarine more quickly, thus obviating the need for multiple strafing runs, which would expose the aircraft to anti-aircraft fire longer.

      The 25lb AP rockets were solid projectiles, no significant, if any, explosive load. The 60lb rockets are an HE delivery mechanism and would explode with some force, though nothing like that of a 250 or 500lb bomb.

  • @klofisch
    @klofisch 3 роки тому +1

    The rockets didnt much damage it looks like

    • @Doc_3908
      @Doc_3908  3 роки тому

      Not at all. I'll try the 60lbs warheads next time - I imagine they'll do more damage. Either way, I don't think it's realistic to expect a single Mosquito to sink a U-boat.

  • @WizzRacing
    @WizzRacing 3 роки тому

    I get you can sink a sub.. But German U Boats left and returned to port at night. Just to avoid being shot....Why the British had to resort to bombing the Sub pins...

    • @Doc_3908
      @Doc_3908  3 роки тому

      That depends on how Growling Sidewinder set up his server. From what I gather, most ships are either stationary or, like the U-boats, patrol a very short stretch of the French coast - probably 30-40miles. Not exactly realistic behavior for any of the naval vessels, but I think GS just wants them as targets as well as sea-borne gun mounts against enemy aircraft. I don't think he's set this up as a realistic WW2 scenario. Still a lot of fun!!!! :)

  • @hawkertyphoon4537

    One of these Rockets would have taken that Sub out of action.

    • @Doc_3908
      @Doc_3908  2 роки тому

      I don't really know. There are lots of discussions about these rockets on the ED forum. My thinking is that a sub, whose reinforced hull is meant to withstand the enormous pressure underwater, will probably not get sufficiently damaged by a 25lb warhead. I don't know why ED recommends the 25lb rockets instead of the 60lb rockets for naval strikes. Then again, they really do their homework and I'm sure there are lots of historical documents from WW2 that explain all that. Happy flying!
