- Take a look at this beautiful 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata! Finished in black and modified with coilovers, this example is a great place to start with my limited experience behind the wheel of Miatas in general. Everyone loves to say that the ND Miata is way underpowered and lacks a lot of characteristics that make a good track-worthy sports car, and whole some of them have merit, most do not. Enjoy!

Same as Suzuki’s swift sport. Similar power to weight size etc. if I could afford to have only 2 seats I’d go Mx5

Just gotta get use to the car, man. It's a reason they don't veer away from the Miata formula.
I have a beat up Mazdaspeed 3.... Nothing spectacular about my car, but for what it's worth, it's pretty smooth on the road.
Isamu Wallace yep lol I have a pretty much stock Eunos Roadster and while its definitely not "fast", it's carries speed with such ease, you really never need to decelerate that much
Problem with car journalists is they're de-sensitised to power. Of course this is gona feel slow compared to what they drive most days. For the majority of us who have driven standard road cars all our lives - this is plenty quick enough to have fun in.
It's easy to argue that supercars are a bit wasted on the public roads. You're essentially buying an expensive, highly-tuned performance machine and paying the running costs to match, only to keep it on a leash 90% of its life and never be able to enjoy it fully unless you take it to a track day. You have to cap the performance in most circumstances. This you can get the most out of it, especially where it matters most - the corners.
Ahaha. Front looks angry to get people out of your way, and then the back looks happy to keep them calm after you pass them.
It's not been as effective at getting people out of the way as one might have hoped.

Anyone that thinks 0-60 in 5.8 sec. is slow is either too young or has unrealistic expectations. My 4th gen Camaro Z28 with a 275hp ran basically the same time. Many muscle cars and sports cars from the 60-90s fell far short of that mark.

Torque dip? That’s the BRZ. The MX5 has good torque and better power to weight than the BRZ. Also the Fiat is a 1.4 not 1.6

I don't think you'd want that car with any power. It's perfectly balanced and roadsters are about the driving experience and tend not to be horsepower warriors

Speed is not everything try where I live the lanes are single track with passing points and constant 90 degree turns 40mph is pushing it and just great fun

Great review, thanks! I'm definitely looking forward to a coilover upgrade, but at the moment the ride height is perfect for steep driveways and speed bump clearances - unfortunately like you mentioned it's on the soft side when you push it :(
My 2021 1.5L Sports Venture is fast enough, it will happily cruise at 70-80Mph, and stick like glue to the B roads.
if you want performance, buy another car, if you want wind in your hair, country smells, and pure driving enjoyment, get the MX

if ppl are complaining the Mazda ND MX-5 and the GT86 lack power.
They are dumb.
Many GT86/BRZ/FR-S owners say it still enough to be a fun daily car.
Also the original MX5 and AE86 only had a 1.6L with only 110-120bhp and they are still fun and fast car to drive on the twisty roads
Obviously the 'owners' like their Miata's, for they wouldn't have chosen to own it. It's a sports chassis with a small economical engine. If this is what you like, great. If you like your sports car to have a sports car engine, choose another car for Mazda does not offer a more powerful variant.

not a chance. engine bay is far too restrictive. even with battery relocation and other reservoir relocations etc it wouldn't be enough room for that big of a block.
po I hate to inform such a qualified UA-cam engineer but it has been done many times before. There's even vr38s in Toyota/Subaru brz's which is vastly larger in the same bay size.

Idk why they get such a bad reputation for being slow. They are quick in third and 4th at 4500 rpms. Mine will flat out fly and can corner with the best of them but I get it in comparison to muscle or super sports cars. I think people that say they are slow haven't driven one balls to the wall
On a big road next to a pack of 400 HP cars, they feel slow. ND2 on a tight road, however, feels plenty quick and balanced. Noticeably more torque than the earlier models.

THANK YOU. If folks understood that the 86 has the same ethos as the mx5, it would be so much more popular. People are expecting Cayman performance in a 30k coupe. Smh.
The 86 has torque dip, that's it
you just need to do the intake mod and an exahust upgrade, the factory cat is restricting the exhaust which cause the dip. Also a remap of the ECU will help
86 doesn't handle as well as the Miata, and it LOOKS like it should have more power than it actually does.
JP the 86 is slower in every aspect. Look at vids of them going head to head
Sorry Marcus, but the 1.5L NA is SHIT. It has its 130hp @ 7000(!)rpm, so if you drive it normally, you have under 100hp - every small car is equally "fast". Besides, it feels very cramped inside and its also very loud. This car does not deserve its hype.
We don't get that engine here in Canada. The only engine available is the larger of the two.
+Edward Clark since you are talking about "we" (you and Marcus?), he is driving the 130hp version (soft top). The 2.0L engine might be a lot better though.
No we as in Canada do not get that engine. The soft top is available with the 2.0L (and only the 2.0 here)

If you daily drive a 600hp car or cars just like me, you would hate Miata. I am still laughing at who pay $35K for this shit. Most of them never even tried something powerful before they got a Miata. And please don't let me test drive a new Miata, I owned two S2000 before I know how those cars feel.
