    I drove the Club vs the GT model and the Club is definitely the one to get. I also drove the RF and you can feel the 100 lbs extra that the top weighs. The Recarro's fit me well but it did squeeze my thigh a bit. They'll probably wear in though. Now if a can find a buyer for my 1997 NA model, I'll go pick up a new one.

    I know that you're probably booked for awhile car review wise Matt, but, I have a Stage 1 tuned golf r DSG here that i think you'd really enjoy. I seen the review that you did of the Golf R but it was stock an u didn't seem to enjoy it. I'd love for you to see what these cars can really do. The Miata? i drove a GT and CLub back to back an they both are the most fun car that i've ever driven, hadn't smiled like that in awhile, nice review man.

      Yeah I am already pretty booked up for this year for reviews but thank you for the offer! Sounds like a fun car! If you're local to Pittsburgh, send me a message on Facebook and maybe we could set up a Quick Drive video instead just to compare the power with a stock R.

    Give me a Miata RF in white with the Club (BBS/Brembo/Recaro) package, bump it to about 200whp with parts and tune, and I'd take it over any other modern sports car.
    Why?
    Interior comfort.
    Mazda is killing it with their new interior design.

    The 2018 MX-5 doesn't have a backup camera because it doesn't need one. All cars made from 5/1/18 must have a camera. The 2018 MX-5 will have a short production run and will end before 5/1/18. The 2019 MX-5 will announce early and will have 181hp due to a new head and cams.

    I owned a brand new '91 MX5 and loved it! Five years later I traded it for my '94 RX7.
    No Apple car play is disappointing. I was just messing around on Mazda's website trying to build my own and it's all screwed up. I'll select the 2018 model, then for whatever reason it changes back to the 2017 and sometimes and the interior options aren't working properly. Another thing, there's no way to select the same dark gray/red top/and dark tan/red interior that's shown on the main MX5 page. I thought it might be a problem with Safari so I tried Chrome. Same thing. Weird. You'd think Mazda would have a better website than that. So, any idea when the 2019s are coming out? More HP (rumors) sounds nice and I'm hoping for Apple car play.

    I always enjoy your extremely thorough reviews. I am 6'1" 255lbs and I couldn't fit comfortably in the 2017 Miata that we got in on trade when I worked at a dealership. I would love to have a convertible and learn how to drive a manual in an inexpensive car, but I just couldn't get comfortable in the Miata and my knees hit the dash, even though I don't really have long legs. I thought it would be cool to have a car that is always smiling when you drive it, but I probably have to sadly go elsewhere. I am sure that I can find something proper and decent that isn't too expensive of have ridiculous miles on it. Thanks again for such a good review of an iconic car that even a 35 would drive if I could fit. :) #ZoomZoom

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  6 років тому

      Yeah some cars do that, honestly I'm not sure why. I think maybe it's just the way the transmission is designed, some shifters have more isolation from the actual transmission than others.

    It's just the NA market that doesn't have the backup camera, I had to buy one from Japan and install it myself. Also, I'm pretty sure it was stated that all cars made after May 2018 must have the backup camera, so MY2019 should have it.

  • @goodeggproductions
    @goodeggproductions 6 років тому +2

    This is such a disappointment. I was one of the first people in America to own a 2016 Club BBS/Brembo. I was DEFINITELY the first person in America to wreck one. But I'm disappointed that Mazda isn't doing anything to this car. After releasing the car in 1990, even then they realized that it needed more and in just 4 short years, gave it a larger engine and upgraded safety features and other things. Why are they waiting so long with the ND? I understand that the rumor is that for the MY2019 it will get a power boost, but I hope it will be more than that.
    Wow. A red top option and the Recaro seats that have been available in other markets for 2 years. What about the color screen from the RF?? Why not put it in this one? Why not Apple Carplay or the Android equivalent? It's just a software thing. There's no reason to NOT include it. And no backup camera? For those saying you don't need one, ha. Drive an ND. You'll quickly realize how high that rear deck is and you'll not understand how visibility in a convertible could be so bad. I have better rear viability in my Ford SUV.
    I don't dislike my ND. In fact, I love it. But it's not without its flaws, and I'm disappointed that Mazda is just changing the VIN plate badging to say 2018 over the 2016 and 2017 model years. Literally nothing has changed. I suppose this is an ok thing, as 20 years from now, there will just be plenty of interchangeable parts. But they aren't selling well. My dealer doesn't even have any 2018s. In April. And they're discounting the 2017's $5000. In FLORIDA. The convertible car capital.
    I'm guessing that the 2019 will get the 181hp tune/motor and the rear camera and maybe some kind of gauge cluster upgrade. And maybe some very subtle exterior refinements (PLEASE fix that rear end and make it match the rest of the car's aggressive lines) and they'll call it a refresh. Every other iteration of Miata got a mid-run update. Hopefully, next year will be for the ND.

    A word on tires and the Miata design. They are designed with relatively soft suspension and intended for a bit of body roll. It's developed more like a touring car. This is very apparent when driving them back to back with other cars like the FT86 or S2000. Mazda makes soft, comfy cars, but they do well with damping meaning that softness and motion is very well controlled (unlike many other cars). A soft suspension will be rather sensitive to tire grip. It becomes very easy to over grip the stock suspension of this design. You will gain grip, but you will gain roll and start interacting more with the bump stops and limits of suspension travel. This creates the problem of upsetting the chassis, upsetting grip consistency over bumps, and creates a car that's more skittish and unpredictable when driven aggressively. You really do need to stick within the intended design, or you'll just make a more dangerous car to drive.

    • @corderomccargo4500
      @corderomccargo4500 6 років тому

      Those tires are there for cost. It has nothing to do with unsetting the balance of the car at the limit. Cheap tires are how the manufacture cuts cost since they are a wear item and the market for them is abundant.

  • @danielisbell

    A couple of small corrections:
    The silver parts of the steering wheel & entertainment system controls are all plastic.
    The BBS wheels are the same size as the standard wheels on the club trim at 17x7. Only the sport trim has smaller wheels at 16x6.5.
    Overall, I'd say this was a decent review. I agree that the tires are a weak point. My all season Continental DWS tires feel just as grippy as the S001, & the RE71R is worlds better for grip than either. I disagree with the complaints about brake pedal travel. I think it's good as-is. I can easily brake lightly during normal driving, but have no issues with hard braking during an autocross.
    As someone who hasn't seen the cherry top in person yet, I would've been curious to see it from the inside as well. Is the top red or black inside?
    One other point worth noting, for 2018, all club trim Miatas should have heated seats, regardless of whether you have the normal, BBS/Brembo, or BBS/Brembo/Recaro package. Additionally, the normal BBS/Brembo package upgrades the seats to leather. 2016 & 2017 club trims did not offer heated or leather seats.

      I had one as a service loaner. I wasn't exactly 'comfortable' but I fit. Impossible to get out of gracefully if you cant open the doors fully. I am also 6'3"

      It's very individual. I'm 6'. I have 150,000 reasonably comfortable miles in the previous two generation cars. I do not fit in a 'normal' 4th gen Miata, but last night I sat in a car similar to the one reviewed- with Recaro seats- and was quite comfortable. I hear of 6'1"-6'2"-6'3" people who do fit in the regular 4th gens, so again it really depends on your build.

    what is the widest tire you can put on the rear for stock and bbs wheels? 225, 235?
    "16" Wheels
    195/50/16 tire size fits within the fenders on wheels down to about 32mm offset. For customers seeking more performance in 16 inch sizes consider 205/50/16 up through 225/45 on 16x7 and 16x8 wheels with higher offset.
    17" Wheels
    With stock size 205/45/17 tires you can run offsets as low as 40mm and still fit in factory fenders with 1 degree negative camber or better, we have run 38mm with more camber.
    An easy upgrade in 17 inch is 215/45/17 and that fits with our wheel choices that are 42mm to 50mm offsets. "

    What I dont get is the Mazda3 with the 2.0 has 155h/150tq and takes 87, and the mx-5 with the 2.0 is 155h/148tq but takes 91. I wonder if its just because they know people are going to be beating it up a little or the torque is down lower

      emark24 the engines are tuned very differently, and the Miatas engine is so much better. Sounds better, and revs higher

    • @Suction_
      @Suction_ 6 років тому +4

      I can believe tuning and such, but the engines are extremely similar, same compression ratio, same bore and stroke and the redline of 6800 is also the same. I had a 16 loaner and it felt pretty similar to my 17 3 2.0, obviously quicker being hundreds of pounds lighter and RWD

      emark24 Also the engine makes 145whp on most dynos so it's underrated.

  • @MatthewGaither

    2019 Miata pretty much confirmed to have a higher redline and 181hp from a reworked motor. A fantastic car is going to get that much better! I'm still daily driving my 2008 NC Miata (and loving it!) but the new 2019 is looking seriously tempting!

    I don't get the Fiata (the Miata is probably the same). Shifting gear feels like shoving a pipe into a meat grinder. Stereo sucks. Way too small even for a small guy like me.

    Great review! Liked the new split screen effect. If I didn't occasionally need the space my new CTR offers, I would have chosen the Miata instead. While very diff animals, imo the Miata offers a more rewarding overall experience...the fun factor is off the charts!

    Brake pedal travel is so you can heel toe easier, if it didn't have a lot of dead travel it'd be awkward or uncomfortable to heel toe downshift.
