  • It really wouldn’t be Christmas without a little bit of Rutter, in this case in a particularly glorious arrangement by Owain Park. The carol was originally written for choir and orchestra and perfectly demonstrates Rutter’s incredible talent for writing a glorious, instantly memorable melody. This a cappella arrangement was an instant hit with the choir, and we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to think about how to sing it as orchestrally as possible.
    Buy/Stream A Pembroke Christmas here: lnk.to/APembro...
    Christmas trees and boughs of holly,
    Yuletide logs and mistletoe;
    Candles burning bright, and meadows frosty white,
    And faces in the firelight′s glow;
    Sounds of happy children's voices
    Singing carols that you love to hear;
    Then the silence of the night
    And the winter air so still and clear.
    Feels like you could reach and touch the sky,
    Or catch a star and fly away;
    Feels like you could wish for peace on earth,
    And all at once it would come, some day.
    Families and friends together
    Feel a special kind of love and cheer,
    Sharing all the joys of Christmas time,
    The very best time of year.
    The very best time,
    That strange, enchanted time,
    That shining, magic time of year.

    It's rare I think to find such a warm and endearing character as Anna, who is also most accomplished and successful in her field. You usually find one or the other. I've never met her but feel such an affinity for her due to her passion for music, her abilities but also her engaging personality. She's the most likeable and watchable person in a long time and I look forward to each and every video.

      I feel quite the opposite: she would appear to be a cocky, commonplace little upstart who needs to know her place.

    If I were to visit the UK how would I find Anna's performance schedule? I don't care if she's just practicing. I love what she's doing for the organ in modern times.

      @SimonSimon-rn3tm,
      Well, you're free to listen to a multitude of other carols on UA-cam if this one isn't to your particular musical tastes.
      I think it's important to note that many unaccompanied choral-based melodies are meant to be more intimate, heartfelt, and overall more cathartic pieces of music.Also, Christmas is a time of year when many people are in a more introspective mode due to the year coming to a close and the reflective spirit that fact can bring, especially to those who are lonely, elderly, and those who've lost loved ones or are going through personal struggles.
      Personally, I find Rutter's carols (and similar carols) to be very moving and uplifting Christmas music, as compared to the more traditional ones and Pop (i.e., Radio/Shop) Christmas music, which have become rather tedious over the years. Regardless of whether the carol is sentimental or not, try to enjoy the beautiful nature of Rutter's unaccompanied Choral-based music.
      I understand what you mean by sentimental but to reduce such a beautiful piece of music to "claptrap" is disrespectful and unnecessary, in my humble opinion. I'm sure there are other Rutter carols that may be to your tastes. I can highly recommend the album 'Carols from Clare' which has a vast variety of different moods and styles. Let me know how you find that wonderful selection.
      God Bless!
