You missed a big spot by not talking about the modding community, just like the PSP it plays a big part on the system and the community is still alive with CoinUPS
+antoclass You couldn't be more right! The Modding community on Xbox was so incredible, I felt it deserved an entire episode. Look out for "The Potential of a Modded Xbox" on Ham some time soon! -TJ
The Nvidia chip that was in the xbox was never known publicly, but me and my family used to have a friend that could emulate the xbox. He ended up putting about 1k old games on it (snes, genisis, ect). Wish that I still had it.
+nunya baznus Pay attention to the edges of objects. There is SIGNIFICANTLY more "aliasing" in the PS2 version - which means the game was either rendered at a lower resolution on the PS2 or the XBOX used some sort of anti-aliasing technique(s). The textures are visibly more cloudy in their details on the PS2 versions. The colors on the overall pictures are also more vivid on the XBOX while being washed out on the PS2.
+Sheldon Cooper I used to always try to get Xbox versions of games if I could find them because they consistently did look better/smoother like you're saying. Either higher resolution or more AA, and I still loved my PS2.
Xbox has always looked amazing, even on HD TVs with component cable the xbox holds up and looks sharp, but if you hook a ps2 to an HD tv it looks like cheesecake.

I specifically remember as a kid being addicted to Battlefront 2. A friend loved the game too and invited me to play on his PS2. I complained the whole time because the fog of war made sniping extremely difficult at long range. I never played that game on a PS2 again.

This video is just perfectly executed. So much nostalgia for the original Xbox. In my opinion it shares the first spot in the list of the best gaming consoles with Dreamcast. Doom 3, Morrowind, Serious Sam, Half-Life 2, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Thief: Deadly Shadows, Fable, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Dead Man's Hand, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath and so many other great games have graced it. Xbox was the exact console choice for my gaming tastes.
There were a lot of different reasons it might've outsold it, it was the more established console already for one. It also played DVDs out of the box(XBox required a separate remote accessory which took up a controller slot). And then it also had tons of PlayStation specific exclusives, some of them being sequels to what were already PS1 exclusives such as Gran Turismo(best selling PS1 game of all time), Tekken, Metal Gear Solid, the Final Fantasy series, and Grand Theft Auto 3 & Vice City, all of which stayed exclusive to PlayStation throughout the PS2/XBox/GameCube generation, as well as some new exclusives such as the Ratchet & Clank series, Ico & Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, Dark Cloud 1 & 2, God of War, the first Guitar Hero game, the Onimusha series and numerous others. That's not to say the XBox didn't give a good attempt to hold it's own against all of that as a brand new competitor to PlayStation and Nintendo. It had Halo 1 & 2(Halo 2 being the best selling XBox game of all time), The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind(also on PC but not PS2), Fable, Forza Motorsport, Project Gotham Racing, Star Wars: KotOR 1 & 2, Jade Empire, Crimson Skies, multiple Dead or Alive games, Ninja Gaiden, Otogi 1 & 2, MechAssault 1 & 2, the Kingdom Under Fire series and probably a few others too. It also had the most powerful hardware of all three consoles for the devs that utilized it, the most coherent & easy to use online experience when XBox Live launched, and arguably the best controller for FPS games(aside from Mouse & Keyboard of course). It also came with twice the controller ports and didn't require a memory card. They were both great consoles, the XBox was in fact my personal favorite, but to most people the PlayStation had a much wider variety of games and was more familiar and that was ultimately what won that generation over.
There was an enhanced Xbox version of MGS2 called Subsistence, GTA games were also on Xbox. PS2 still had most of the others though unlike Xbox, partially due the Xbox being too small in the Asian market.
+SmashCrash productions Which only happens to a very very tiny minority of smokers, there are far many things that are far more likely to happen that you should fear, but you don't hear the government warning you about real threats.
Cool video but you missed Ninja Gaiden one of the most technically impressive and hardest games on the original XBOX. Would probably be worth mentioning Full Spectrum Warrior and it's experimental headset voice control too.
+An Ordinator I have heard that Bethesda did tried to have Morrowind to play on Gamecube. But the Original Xbox had better proccessor and CPU. I can't remember when was that i have heard of it.
The Xbox basically started out as a pet project by some guys at Microsoft, who tore apart laptops with Intel processors and rebuilt them as a a sort of console. Ironically, the current-gen consoles (Xbox One and PS4) are basically what the Xbox was in the early 2000s: Streamlined PCs. Standard CPUs from AMD, standard GPU from AMD, standard GDDR5/DDR3 RAM. Some parts are customized of course, but both consoles would technically be able to run Windows and have programs and games installed on them.
+silvergbasp13 I found a limited edition translucent green Halo edition Original Xbox at a garage sale a few months ago. The disc drive doesn't work properly but that should be an easy fix if I really want to use it to play games (I already have my own original xbox).
+silvergbasp13 Incredible! I found one in a charity shop in Manchester, UK for £12 with one controller and all the cables (the green Halo edition). Works fine but have absolutely no games for it. It's been sitting in a box for like 2 months now.
+Marcus Hanslow Found one in a pawn shop one time. Asked the owner how much. He said $10. Got it home and it turned out to be a modded beast with like 45 games preinstalled. I cried in joy. Then proceed to play Midtown Madness 3 for the next 12 hours.
Wow, a look back at the Xbox with the shortest section on Halo I have ever seen. Halo was the most pivotal game on the Xbox and Halo 2 really shined above the rest when it came to setting up the future of online play. However, I like that you didn't focus on them since most people do. While I was more of a Playstation person in those days (still prefer Nintendo and Playstation), my college roommate had a Xbox, so we played the heck out of that thing. Halo, Black, Fable, Jedi Academy, etc. were all great games. The modding on it was great as well, playing your games of the HDD was much more convenient and made loading much better.
+FireMrshlBill Yeah you're right, they barely showed Halo which was probably the game that literally defined the Xbox and carried the Xbox brand all the way to the Xbox One.
Crash Nitro Kart may have invented the racing on walls thing but didn't do much with it other than it being an extension of the track, but it's still a great game that I fondly remember on Xbox.
I miss throwing LAN party's playing Halo 2 all day and ordering cheap food and generic Cola. Also miss playing Mech Assault, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and Ghost Recon, online.
+HolyCow In my hometown they had a small place were you could play laser tag. Since you could only play 10 at a time, they had a few XBoxes where you could play Halo 2 over LAN. Hell, sometimes you skipped the laser tag even though it was your turn because Halo was simply so much fun.
The Xbox will always hold a special place in my heart, it was my first 6th gen console, I later got the PS2 and GC, but the Xbox was hands down my favorite for that gen. After 10+ years, it did finally die on me a few year back, had it soft modded, and put a 160GB HDD in it, so I could download all of my games on it and took it over to sleepovers.
I got my xbox very recently, but to be honest, I had more fun with Fable the Lost Chapters and Morrowind than I have with some of the latest Xbox One games. Maybe its just me
+Gaming Ace yeah some Pentium 3 and some used celerons but thats it just those 2. you can see it here if you scroll down on tech specs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox#Comparison
+Lazarus Nazareth It is everything that matters in real life. Because there is no matter if OpenGL and vulcan is vastly superior to DX if no one uses the API. It's like learning Blender 3D modeling software; most enthusiasts use it, it has a lot of plug ins to other software, and can do a lot of things. BUT the industy uses Maya and 3DMax, so if you want to learn something useful, you learn those two, even if Blender can do more stuff compard to the others. Point is, IF - and hopefully - the gaming industry would switch over to Vulcan it would start to matter and the argument vulcan vs DX will become valid. It would also save the gaming industry from Microsofts iron claws atm...
ps3 does have an emulator that I believe may or may not be capable of running commercial games. it's laggy as hell though, seems it takes alot of power to emulate that cpu
I tried using one and wasn't able to get any game running, so i tought it was another fake. Could you please give me the name of the one that really works?
+Darnoko Guilama I don't really remember the name and quite frankly it doesn't work well anyways. I doubt you have the hardware to pull it off even if you had the emulator
***** Yes, of course i know. I just want to try it out to see where they are in development and how it works. I also discovered xenia as an xbox 360 emulator that seems pretty promising.
The Xbox was really was amazing with it's graphical power. Unlike the PS2, most of it's games can output a native 480p signal with some having widescreen or 720p and 1080i resolutions. Even the weaker Dreamcast and Gamecube had most of their library 480p compatible.
Except it could. If you took a PC with similar specs (although more RAM would be needed), used the same resolution and adjusted the graphic settings to look like the console version of a certain game, the game would play almost the same. It didn't take much either to outperform the Xbox or PS2. I had an AMD Athlon Thunderbird (the old purple ceramic CPU), 256 MB RAM, and an ATI Radeon 9600. I could play Need for Speed Underground 2 at settings that looked much better. Loading times were also better as well since consoles back then had to load everything directly off the disc. Not shitting on the Xbox though. Had fun playing certain games on it with friends but now all I play on is PC these days.
I get your point but you make it sound like it required $1000's in PC hardware when it didn't. Plus I use a PC as a general purpose machine and always have. People seem to forget that VERY important fact. I do much more with my PC than just play games. Things consoles can't do.
Well, its down to accountace and optimization. On PC you rarelly use your hardware properly whilst playing a game. You see, for a console, you only have to account for one hardware, for one architecture, for one OS even, so that means that you can very easily optimize a game to fully use up the hardware to its best potential, factor in a nice light OS specifically designed to play games and voila, you have your advantage. When developing for a PC you cant focus on one type of hardware, on one OS, you must account for different hardware brands and architectures, for different OS's, so you need to strike a balance, something thatll somehow work on every piece of hardware. Thats why consoles can get away with crappy specs for multiple years, because you only have to optimize for one piece of hardware and you only have one OS thats not stealing any resources for other stuff.
I still have my PS2 Slim next to me at all times, just to remind me of how I went from Madagascar 2 as a kid, to 4K gaming today. It makes me miss the past so much.
+Gabriel Marro Yeah, a trinatron. Sony made some of the best CRT's out there. Microsoft doesn't make t.v's so it's really not a competition. Still kinda funny though.
this guy deserves more subs... i mean honestly he puts more effort into his videos than a lot of high up youtubers out there. Keep up the good work m8 :)
As someone who was primarily an Xbox gamer, this was really refreshing to see. It's rare that we see a retrospective about this console. We usually only hear about the PS2 or Gamecube.
+Coolieli Lol, no xD I've done it, no problems at all. And still more powerful (obviously) than when it was original... And it's quieter and not that hot at all (used an mITX board and a few noctua fans in the sides) with a Pentium G3258, 8GB of DDR3 1600MHz Crucial Ballistix, 250GB 850 Evo + 750GB 5400RPM 2.5" laptop drive, a small 400W mITX PSU (can't remember which brand, looks almost like a server PSU) a Z97i-Plus motherboard and a low profile GTX 750. Works really nice (used as my current HTPC) and i'm planning on putting in a Core i5 4690k in it. But yeah, as i said, no problems at all.
Funny that this video pops up on my recommended for you list just a day after I bought an original xbox for the first time in my life. Good video and you are correct in that there are many great games for this console that I look forward to playing.
OH MY GOD THANK YOU FOR ADDING MIDTOWN MADNESS 3. I remember playing it when I was a kid and lately I've been wanting to play it so bad but I had forgotten the name of the game.
How large was the budget version of the 360? The original xbox had 8 or 10 GB HDD depending when and where it was released. Btw; was DOOM 3 really released on the xbox? seems way too new and graphically advanced compared to halo, hf2, and stuff like that.
Dam the nostalgia... I remember playing so many hours of Fable, Beyond Good & Evil, Dead or Alive, so many good games, it feels like it was just yesterday!
+MitchZer0II It runs a pentium 3 and it can be upgraded as it has a laptop mobo with some custom hardware. If RAM could be added then even XP could run well
Same I'm buying this instead and will wait for the Scorpio, that console is looking to be in a pretty similar situation to the OG Xbox since it's a lot more powerful than the new PlayStation just like OG Xbox was a lot more powerful than PS2.
+sonic1934 Do you know how difficult it is to install any homebrew software on a vanilla Xbox? I've been thinking of doing it myself but I'm scared of possibly ruining my Xbox and never being able to play on it again
***** Seems simple enough.. I'll have to look into that, thanks. The only other methods I've heard of are those where people completely disassembled the Xbox and toyed around with the components and stuff.. I don't want to risk busting my console lol
That's for mod chips or soft modding without a game. I did it last week with a copy of splinter cell and it took about 20 min and 15$ of stuff off amazon.

You forgot to mention the fact that it could run some titles at 720p and even 1080i.
The ps2 can also do that.

@@日本語学科者 not really
@@日本語学科者 ps2 can only do 480p and 1080i
720p is much better than 1080i
Only on NTSC consoles, however. GHG is in Australia (PAL), which only has (I think) 576i @ 50/60hz.
If the Xbox was basicly a PC, i'm surprised a proper emulator never was achievable
and why pc gamers sometimes get shitty ports that run well on a potato
I think it's because it only has 64MB of RAM
Yeah, but I imagine that if you run XP on a computer with 64mb, it's going to be very slow.
The Nvidia chip that was in the xbox was never known publicly, but me and my family used to have a friend that could emulate the xbox. He ended up putting about 1k old games on it (snes, genisis, ect). Wish that I still had it.

When I was a kid, I never noticed a difference between the two. All I know that they both play games and that what makes it amazing for me.
It looks like Xbox has more anti aliased games than PS2. And AA takes a lot of power, which makes it impressive for an old console.
Yeha the Xbox was way more powerful. Three years newer than the PS2 I believe? Games were still being made for the PS2 longer though
Yes it was.

How so?, maybe he should use a Microsoft TV lol

The Chronicles of Riddick: escape from butcher Bay was very impressive on Xbox.
It was one of those games that I played over and over again.

The xbox is a powerhouse! I mean, some games even support 720p output! True HD, that's insane.

PheenX he’s just calm
Crash Nitro Kart may have invented the racing on walls thing but didn't do much with it other than it being an extension of the track, but it's still a great game that I fondly remember on Xbox.
+Nana-Kyoto yeah, and f zero gx came out before that title which had creative freedom with zero gravity XD
I always thought crash was a sony exlusive... o_o
Whatching it in 2017, it's still great

2018* and the Xbox is one of my favorites consoles now!!
Homie somebody ate every desert in the house.
Desert, somebody ate every homie in the house!
The best thing about it was the controller. The controller was badass and big enough for my hands! Also had the most lit design ✋🏼👌🏼
I love how he says "incredible libary" as the camera pans over to Dog's Life.
homie somebody ate all the desserts in the house!!!

Thinking of buying one this weekend.
do it, just do it
StefanGamerHD
I wanted to but never got around to it sadly. Maybe this weekend? :)
I'll probably forget again in my luck.
You forgot didn't you.
k I did. i ended up buying a mechanical keyboard instead so i could ditch my old EMachines keyboard from 2003.
they were able to do some amazing things with its 64MB DDR system ram... plus its slim operating system helped
Maybe its just me
+Spyro The Gerudo ohh the lost chapters, what a game back then a shame Ghgtv didn't talk about Conker live and reloaded multiplayer. xD
some of the xbox's also had a celeron processor clocked at the same speed
really?
+Gaming Ace yeah some Pentium 3 and some used celerons but thats it just those 2. you can see it here if you scroll down on tech specs.

Ahh, back when OpenGL was taking a giant steaming dump on Direct3d.
+Private Pecker It still is. Vulkan is definitely destroying DX12.
Vmigo Well OpenGL isn't very popular today. And Vulkan is very new.
+Private Pecker MInecraft....
Lazarus Nazareth Linux is a clearly better OS but it has less than 1% of the market share. It does matter.
Bruh, i just found your channel a couple of days ago. And i can tell, YOUR CHANNEL IS AWESOME, i love it. Keep doing this amazing videos :)
this channel gives nostalgia a new deeper meaning
Definitely a documentary on the PS3 Cell Processor. I'm really curious about why no one found a way to emulate it yet.
ps3 does have an emulator that I believe may or may not be capable of running commercial games. it's laggy as hell though, seems it takes alot of power to emulate that cpu
***** Thank you, I will try it soon
***** Yes, of course i know. I just want to try it out to see where they are in development and how it works. I also discovered xenia as an xbox 360 emulator that seems pretty promising.
The Xbox was really was amazing with it's graphical power. Unlike the PS2, most of it's games can output a native 480p signal with some having widescreen or 720p and 1080i resolutions. Even the weaker Dreamcast and Gamecube had most of their library 480p compatible.
So if the original Xbox is basically a Pentuim III PC, how come a real PC with similar specs can't handle graphics like this?
Thats why consoles can get away with crappy specs for multiple years, because you only have to optimize for one piece of hardware and you only have one OS thats not stealing any resources for other stuff.
it can :v
CoolDudeClem optimization
What a great video. Feels like something that would of been on G4 back in the xplay days instant subscriber earned.
I still have my PS2 Slim next to me at all times, just to remind me of how I went from Madagascar 2 as a kid, to 4K gaming today. It makes me miss the past so much.
You forgot to mention what Halo 2 did, first game to do matchmaking.
Did anyone else notice the Xbox is on top of a Sony tv?
+Gabriel Marro Yeah, a trinatron. Sony made some of the best CRT's out there. Microsoft doesn't make t.v's so it's really not a competition. Still kinda funny though.
Gabriel Marro:
Also ironic is "Xbox" is ON TOP of "Sony". Ha.
yeah it is ironic that i use a sony tv but use a xbox one
I have been itching to collect for this console... and now even more!
this guy deserves more subs... i mean honestly he puts more effort into his videos than a lot of high up youtubers out there. Keep up the good work m8 :)
can you do a gamecube video?
I personally thought it was Riddick that showed of the power of the xbox, that game looked near xbox 360 graphics I thought.
That's right Nintendo. Wii know what you're up to.
The Wii and Xbox are 2 completely different consoles...
+JkTheUnlockable You can't take a joke?
+JkTheUnlockable It's a quote from the video
+Marcus Coster Lol.
I love the Doom 3 music in the background. Best song ever written for a video game.
As someone who was primarily an Xbox gamer, this was really refreshing to see. It's rare that we see a retrospective about this console. We usually only hear about the PS2 or Gamecube.
PS 2 is the best thing ever happend in history of gaming, tricky ssx was the greatest thing that I ever saw.
wait, DOOM 3 WAS ON THE XBOX?! I THOUGHT IT WAS A 360 LAUNCH TITLE OR SOMETHING IT LOOKS SO GOOD
You're thinking of Quake 4.
doom 3 was on both original xbox and 360
gmd_swegamer Doom 3 BFG Edition was on Xbox 360. The BFG Edition is the Re-Mastered version.
Aaron Velez
oh
plz make a really good gaming rig out of the case
The case would melt if you built an actual pc in it
yeah
+Anton Söderberg That's awesome! Do you have any photos or videos of it?
Not currently, but i can fix some tomorrow! :)
Thank you Gram, so much memories now. Thank you :,)
I feel like a full Playstation gamer, for Sony !
But my first console was this console.
Just seeing that load up screen brings backs some awesome old school memories
I wish there were still console pc hybrids.
Console pc hybrid would be hella expensive in the modern world tho😂
Dominick Brewer Isn't that just a gaming PC though?
FlowUrbanFlow i mean it could be if u include emulation but u have to wait a while
FlowUrbanFlow consoles where way more powerful for their time than current gen. For their time. They where almost up to par with gaming pcs back then
I really liked the amount of swedish cars in this video, it almost made me feel a little bit patriotic.
+Due&MartinssonProductions
Buy a Saab and support the worst union in the world.
Lancelot Xavier What union?
Due&MartinssonProductions
At Saab, showing up for work was a option.
Seriously.
Who still plays Doom 3 in 2020?
Funny that this video pops up on my recommended for you list just a day after I bought an original xbox for the first time in my life. Good video and you are correct in that there are many great games for this console that I look forward to playing.
i absolutely love your videos sir!!!!!
they have an oldschool feel to it and i also love old hardware (old but not obsolete)
¡ǝsnoɥ ǝɥʇ uı ʇɹǝssǝp ʎɹǝʌǝ ǝʇɐ ǝuoǝɯos 'ǝıɯoɥ
BIG NORDIC XD
Yeah, original XBOX was the best of that generation for sure. Well in my opinion, based on the games I liked.
The "D box".. A "D" in a "box"
Your videos remind me on the old documentaries from the late 90s to early 2000s.
OH MY GOD THANK YOU FOR ADDING MIDTOWN MADNESS 3. I remember playing it when I was a kid and lately I've been wanting to play it so bad but I had forgotten the name of the game.
"Incredible Library" Dogs Life
So... The Xbox had a bigger hard drive then the budget Xbox 360?
Don't you talk bad about the legend.
How large was the budget version of the 360? The original xbox had 8 or 10 GB HDD depending when and where it was released.
Btw; was DOOM 3 really released on the xbox? seems way too new and graphically advanced compared to halo, hf2, and stuff like that.
Little did he know the "budget Xbox 360" didn't have a hard drive
+Kingarthur Gaming Wut? I have no memory of the 360 release, but did they sell those without a HDD? 0.o
Wow...
+Wistbacka He meant SSD you dumb fuck
Cell processor documentary pls
Dam the nostalgia... I remember playing so many hours of Fable, Beyond Good & Evil, Dead or Alive, so many good games, it feels like it was just yesterday!
Your content is unique, nostalgic and entertaining, thank you for the great videos :)
Now could you try Windows 98 or 2000 on it
Apparently it used a modified Windows 2000 kernel as it's OS. So possibly, yeah.
Ok
Wasn't there a Linux install? Some form of hack. But then hasn't nearly everything. 😉
+MitchZer0II It runs a pentium 3 and it can be upgraded as it has a laptop mobo with some custom hardware. If RAM could be added then even XP could run well
+Officer Snake ram is probably soldered onto the board, plus it would depend on the memory controller.
I'd actually want to save up for an original xBox rather than an xBox One
Same I'm buying this instead and will wait for the Scorpio, that console is looking to be in a pretty similar situation to the OG Xbox since it's a lot more powerful than the new PlayStation just like OG Xbox was a lot more powerful than PS2.
No need to save up just get one for $20 on ebay.
i've had my orginal xbox ever since i was 4. i'm 15 now and still have it.
Mac Doodles id choose original xbox any day of the weekend!
i sold that thing. I MISS IT
I can relate, mine broke.
I still remember I enjoy so much playing crazy taxi with pentium 3, 512mb of ram and no gpu
Thanks for bringing back great memories!
I still have the original xbox
shouldn've mentioned the homebrewers
+sonic1934 Do you know how difficult it is to install any homebrew software on a vanilla Xbox? I've been thinking of doing it myself but I'm scared of possibly ruining my Xbox and never being able to play on it again
+Mendosa666 All you need is a flashdrive, cable, and one of three games that can use a exploit.
*****
Seems simple enough..
*****
Oh I see, well thanks for the info! I'll have to try this out in the near future
