The Wii U was a console with an unfortunate lifeline all through the entirety of its release, from a confusion launch to a lack of physical power.... but damn was it fun to play games on.
Having personally developed for this device, the Wii U is a really solid platform. As mentioned in the vid, the CPU CAN get underwhelmed if overtaxed, but from a graphical standpoint, even BotW doesn't fully tax the GPU. Running stress tests graphically, I achieved somewhere in-between a PS3 and PS4 level of graphical quality on various models, materials, and textures. The Wii U was honestly neglected for it's abysmal CPU and horrendous marketing. I just hope someone can fully realize the capabilities of this device in a tangible way since Nintendo has opened development for it and the 3DS. I am even finding out just how truly capable the 3DS is, as I am privately developing for personal testing a 3D remake of Pokemon Red, pulling assets from the official 3DS pokemon games themselves. I have already established a playable demo that simply lacks polishing (UI, Particle effects for attacks, SFX, basically minor things), but is already taxing an O3DS to the limit, while still allowing full 3D at all times unlike the official pokemon games. At the end of the day, limitations are just that: Limiting. This doesn't imply a device is incapable. Unfortunately, this video never really put the actual power of the Wii U into perspective, so I felt this comment was needed her from someone who has actually worked with the hardware on a more intimate level than simply playing a game. For those further interested, the Wii U was also the hardest device I have coded for. Documentation, even today, feels like it was slapped together from manufacturer notes, and many things are easily missed unless you extensively scour over the docs, while others are actually confusing, and down right a PITA to implement, especially input. This coupled with the weak CPU, I feel was the primary killer of 3rd party support.

Was the clock speed the biggest difference that separated the two, or were there more architectural deficiencies in areas like cache. I’m also wondering about your comment about the lack of decent documentation for the Wii U’s processor. Isn’t it, on a surface level, an overclocked Wii processor with three cores on the die? I know there’s a lot more to the hardware than just raw core count, but I would’ve guessed that devs could use the knowledge they had learned while developing Wii titles as a good starting point. I’m still taking your word for it when it comes to assessing the system’s capabilities, but I do find it disappointing to see that a system that released in 2012 has processor specs that are debatably weaker than a processor made for systems in 2005.
Hey when a game developer claims a game system is a PITA or a nightmare or anything or claims a CPU is "weak" then we are entitled to know who the game developers are, what companies and what games... Actually, I think Nintendo made too many mistakes with the system: 1. The GPU was too slow for the current standards, they should've aimed higher on that respect. 2. Too little and too slow RAM. 3. The lack of a native hard drive solution was a bummer. Even if flash memory is fast as it is, 32 gb wasn't that great even in 2012 when the console first launched. 4. The netcode was hit and miss. 5. Aaaaaaaaaaandd... the gamepad. It's great, don't get me wrong, but it made the console a lot more expensive than it should have been. If Nintendo were able to sell the thing for 199 usd and probably 150 nowadays, the thing would have sold like hotcakes, it was it's natural price point in my opinion. The gamepad should have been sold separately and they should have enforced the existence of an ecosystem with the 3ds family, there you had your extra screen for everyone on the room, with the option of the fully fledged wii u tablet thing. It's a shame things went the way they did, I cherish my Wii U, it's a great system, certainly a lot more interesting than both the xbox juan and the ps4. It was the last true console.
javierortiz82 the main issue was the lack of software from Nintendo. It had a drought that wasn't helped by its form factor, CPU, and naming. Seriously, it's their version of the Saturn.
+Muhammad saws war pädophil na und? The Vita flopped because it was *too* powerful. Developing for the Vita with its relatively good graphics was more expensive than developing for the 3DS, and less profitable than developing for home consoles. Developers weren't willing to risk large amounts of money developing $40-priced games for a system with few owners. Then of course it fell into the spiral we've seen many times before: with no games people don't buy the Vita, and with no Vita owners devs don't make games. The Vita itself is great, but as Nintendo has proven more than once, software sells hardware, not just specs.
I know this comment will never see the sunlight under this sea of comments, but if anyone wonders what the song is from the 3D inside of the wiiU thingy is... welp it's Gold Mines - Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge. kthanksbye
It was so underrated because Nintendo made it look like gamepad add-on for the Wii with a confusing name and poor advertising/marketing. The Wii U was great if you had it in the early years, but since there is absolutely no AAA third party support anymore, it's useless now. I still have mine to play exclusives and Virtual Console games.
Thing is, Nintendo didn't really say what it was, there was never any advertising for it. Hell I only know that it isn't an add on from looking into it. Don't be so quick to call people dumb.
yup, great for us who had it and thanks to it having failed we have a better Nintendo today. Love the Wii U, but I also love how it "fathered" the Switch.
Are you calling a 3.6MHz SNES more powerful than a 7.6MHz Genesis? SuperFX existed to give the SNES fucking life support because it was just not fast enough on the CPU side.
SNES was the second weakest of its generation actually. It was only stronger than the PC-Engine. SNES had a lot of memory bottlenecks which hindered sound quality, resolution, amount of colors on screen, amount of sprites on screen. Stuff like that. The CPU on top of being pretty bad as it's the same as the NES' CPU but just a 16-bit variant, it was still slower than the Master System's CPU. Hell the Genesis could play more sounds at once than the SNES and the audio isn't crunched on the system due to having enough memory for the sound hardware, THe only good or strong thign about the SNES is that had a genuine VPU and not a video controller tied to the CPU like older systems before it. Case in point... the SNES would shit itself trying to run Sonic the Hedgehog.
Nintendo was always in between two generations. Many people actually consider Wii to be Gen 6.5, and the Wii U Gen 7.5.(FYI PS3 is Gen 7 and PS4 is Gen 8)
Great video mate. I subscribed to your channel a while ago. I owned a lot of consoles in my lifetime, including Atari, Sega, PlayStation, Xbox, even some old Philips cartridge consoles and off course Nintendo systems. I'm a fan of Nintendo and their games, but I never bought a Wii U. I've played from a friend a couple of times, and I was impressed by the graphical performance of the Wii U. Nintendo knows how to make efficient 1st party with hardware limitations. The time I've played on the Wii U was back in 2014. I was aware that PlayStation 4 & Xbox One were much powerful. Beside that, I've enjoyed games like Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Zelda Wind Waker HD, and a couple other games. Sadly enough Wii U lacks 3rd party support thanks to the underpowered CPU. In 2016 I bought a PlayStation 4 and at the moment playing a lot of Breath Of The Wild on the Switch. Both are lovely systems with their own games and features. Blu ray movies on PS4 as an example. I don't mind what console people are playing, they all have their own games. And a gamer wants to play all of the great games available. I'm looking forward to Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid Prime 4 for the Switch and God Of War and Gran Turismo Sport for the PlayStation 4. Also considering of buying a Xbox One in the near future. They have also some great games I love from the Xbox consoles like Gears of War , Halo and Forza as examples. Furthermore, keep up the good work. I always enjoy watching your video's. Friendly regards, Emiel
Emiel333 Official True gamers always recognize every developers and console companies' quality. I'm a PS4 and Wii U owner too. As much as I love Zelda Botw, Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon, I also love Uncharted, GOW, Shadow of the Colossus or Horizon Zero Dawn from the PS4. I now want to get a new graphic card (I'll probably wait for the new gen) to play multiplayer games, like Battlefield, Rocket League and Assetto Corsa with a wheel. And I'd have had a Xbox One too, as I had a 360 last gen and I absolutely loved it. The Switch is still not worth it for me as a Wii U owner, but it will get interesting for sure in the future. Anyways, they're both out of the budget if I want to finish the PC. At the end of the day our only problems are money and time! As we've got other oblies and hobbies too. Cheers from Spain.
WCBROW01 nah, it was because of the gamepad. If they had gone with a more traditional console with a traditional controller it wouldn't have been underpowered.
the gamepad is basically nintendo's version of the kinect, and also terrible marketing failed the wii u, right now the switch is basically what the wii u should have been
In the right hands, it’s powerful. It probably has more potential than what’s here now. We need more 1st class HomeBrew that pushes the limits of what its capable of. With great power, comes great games
Didn't you watch the video? The CPU is a slow turd, there's not much you can do about it, if they hadn't pushed the touchpad controller gimmick so hard, they would've had enough budget for a better CPU. That useless touchpad controller is responsible for the downfall of the whole system.
I don't know about everyone else, but I never once had performance issues or frame drops on my Wii u, all my games ran buttery smooth. I also really don't think it's fair to showcase the Wii U's most recent, most demanding title as the showing for its poor power, especially since that title, Breath of the Wild, didn't exist for a huge portion of its lifetime.
So we shouldn't show games like the last of us / God of war ascension / granturismo 6 / ratchet and clank into the nexus despite showing the best the ps3 can do cause they came out in the last days of the ps3 ?
solid 6/10 For some people it does. I own a Switch, but obviously not all of 13-14 million people who bought a Wii U have a Switch yet. Also, while the Switch version is superior, the Wii U one is nearly identical. Remember BotW was developed from the ground up for the Wii U and then ported over to the Switch late in development. It was basically The Twilight Princess situation on the Gamecube and Wii all over again.
Nintendo should have tried to make a slim version of the wiiu that is smaller in size so that it can be more easily portablized. The current wiiu is large to be carried and even with old tech it still takes a lot of power and overheats which is a problem, but I like that tablet controller on it.
I have a keybind directly set up to take me to your YT channel. I always watch this at 6:00 AM after walking the dog and watching the airplanes takeoff at the airport.
As a gamer with a balling gaming PC that can put a PS4 and XBone to shame, I will say that Nintendo knows how to play to the strengths (and play around the weaknesses) of their consoles. When the "big two" are just trying to be cheap, cut-down PCs, there's rarely a reason to go for them. But Nintendo always stands out from the crowd and offers games and experiences that you just won't get on the PC. PC Gamers understand that consoles will never win the arms race of pure power against a PC. But Nintendo fully accepts this and doesn't try to compete in the same space. And they deliver some truly remarkable titles while doing so (surprised you didn't show off any Smash Bros here). So yeah, while my gaming PC may cost twice as much as a PS4 and Xbone put together (twice), the latest Nintendo platform always adds something to the mix that the other consoles just can't match.
Nintendo has some pretty good games and tricks us into paying them more by only developing for a proprietary and cheap console that will just manage to run them.
Andrew KVK You, sir, are right! ... Not that I complain, isn't that the whole point of console exclusives? I mean, most PCs could run those games but you don't see Halo or Kingdom Hearts on PC only to give consoles a marketing edge the companies paid for, when in reality the console is overpriced for the hardware it boasts and your PC would have so much more added value for the same price
I find the hardware race a bit tiresome these days. It had more relevance when the biggest limiting factor for games was specs. New generations would allow for new genres, but now, the hardware race is largely a pissing contest. Ingenuity is so much more important, which is why I care more about the people who make the games rather than the spec sheets. To their credit, Nintendo has some of the most talented individuals in gaming.
Musix_Match im not saying YOU are getting paid. Just simply saying anyone can get paid, even if it's a few cents due to low views without needing 1M subs
I'm making a joke about how the wii u died... I never said it was bad, but in my opinion the switch is better, mainly because it feels less tacky and actually does what it says on the tin, as well as being able to actually run breath of the wild.
It seemed like the start of a new trend for lackluster CPU's, because even the Xbox One and PS4 had CPU's that weren't quite up to par with the standard, i kept hearing, but the GPU's were very good and decent.

Sorry but Xenoblade X showed every strength of the Wii U in the best ways possible. That game was a technical master peice that still no other console can properly emulate (not even a 1080ti and Ryzen 2700x). To not include it is strange.
Why did the Wii U Fail so badly? I thought it was cool, having the dual screens like that, and being able to play most of your games while someone can watch TV.
Walther Penne a) shooters shouldn't be what sells a console b) $300 plus games and controllers is nothing compared to PS4's $400 plus many $40+ games as well as PS Plus membership and Xbox's $500 and many $40+ games and paid DLC. c) exactly

Really nice video. I love the 3d models that show the internals of the console. Great work!
Actually, I think Nintendo made too many mistakes with the system:
It was the last true console.

well said man
javierortiz82 the main issue was the lack of software from Nintendo. It had a drought that wasn't helped by its form factor, CPU, and naming. Seriously, it's their version of the Saturn.

Yes, because of its exclusives. If games like BOTW were legitimately (not CEMU) on PC, then no one would really have a Wii U, other than younger kids.

Wii u and Vita were both underrated
+Muhammad saws war pädophil na und? the Vita was underpowered? ok
The Vita itself is great, but as Nintendo has proven more than once, software sells hardware, not just specs.
mpforeverunlimited Vita is probably more powerful than the Ambulance console
I said underrated not underpowered?

Manueljlin thanks dude i was wondering where that was from. I thought it was a remix of haunted ship from sonic rush adventures
RALPHY88 I will forever be bitter about transferring over my Wii data to the Wii U.
+Mr Bubble I liked watching the transfer though. It was pretty cool.
Thing is, Nintendo didn't really say what it was, there was never any advertising for it. Hell I only know that it isn't an add on from looking into it. Don't be so quick to call people dumb.
Adam They called it a new console when they revealed it. People ARE dumb.
Roderic Kingfield I agree, anyone who was not unsure what it was, is a moron. That or they live in a hole in the ground.
I'll sub to that, good vid mate.
Ironically the Switch often runs at 30fps while most Wii u games target 60.
I still love the Wii U for its UI and games and dont care that it failed as hard as it did. IMO its still a great console.
The Timelords I agree
yup, great for us who had it and thanks to it having failed we have a better Nintendo today.
Love the Wii U, but I also love how it "fathered" the Switch.
The Timelords SOMEONE CALL THE AMBALAM WII U WII U WII U WII U
The Timelords if you like it for the ga,es ere is a wii u emulator on pc
Me too :D
The problem is it was nitendos next gen... it wasn't suppose to compete with the PS3 and Xbox 360 it was suppose to compete with the PS4 and Xbox1
To be fair, the Super NES was more powerful than Genesis.
Are you calling a 3.6MHz SNES more powerful than a 7.6MHz Genesis? SuperFX existed to give the SNES fucking life support because it was just not fast enough on the CPU side.
Extra Deluxe yea does it have *BLAST PROCESSING*
The use of 3D models is awesome dude, keep up that trend!

This video popped up in my suggested box. A very well put together video indeed! Great editing and a sense of humor. Subbed!
It had potential. Nintendo just cheaped out on the CPU.
WCBROW01 nah, it was because of the gamepad. If they had gone with a more traditional console with a traditional controller it wouldn't have been underpowered.
the gamepad is basically nintendo's version of the kinect, and also terrible marketing failed the wii u, right now the switch is basically what the wii u should have been
Pavlin Todorov Wii U is what Wii should've been and Switch is what Wii U should've been. Nintendo has always had the most powerful console until Wii
yes but the wii outsold both xbox 360 and ps3 by 16 million, the wii u would have costed like $900 if it was released around 2005-2006
Pavlin Todorov how is a console on par with PS3/360 gonna cost 900 dollars?
It's been 84 years...
@@callofgamer24You couldnt have said it better. At least mine is hacked and can play the entire Nintendo legacy on it.
Speed Grump botw runs great now.
Thats for the switch too, so does it really matter?
Yeah but they both have it.
Nintendo should have tried to make a slim version of the wiiu that is smaller in size so that it can be more easily portablized. The current wiiu is large to be carried and even with old tech it still takes a lot of power and overheats which is a problem, but I like that tablet controller on it.
hbarudi overheats? WTF?

PrimeSonicYT conclusion:
pc master race
ligh i take it that entire paragraph went right over your head, good job
CEMU solves that problem of PC Gamers wanting to play Wii U games.
It's not the same though especially with games that require you to use the gamepad.
That’s why I purchased a Wii U
