  • Today we are going to take a quick look at the new Savage MultiFlex Light Stand.
Savage sent me a stand to try out for myself, and in this video, we'll take look at the stand right out of the box.
I look forward to taking this stand out in the field with me to shoot more fine art cactus shots. I usually shoot cacti that stand pretty tall, and with this stand, I should be able to reach the tall heights without sacrificing stability.

I just bought the 10’ model, and I am VERY IMPRESSED ! At normal portrait heights for people 6-6.5 feet tall, this stand is Rock Solid without using any sandbags. I place my Explor 600 Pro plus a 50” softbox at 7-7.5 feet, and with that 5+ ft footprint, you couldn’t knock it down with a bulldozer !

That stand should sell like hotcakes to architectural photographers.

Hey Joel I would love to hear you input on photo insurance not many creators touch on this subject and I think its hard to determine what I should be looking for.

Brian just do a google search for photo insurance most companies like Tom C pickard or Truman Van dyke will offer packages that cover. Liability.. you need million dollar liability to get permits. Their general packages will cover liability, equipment etc . Along with general liability you want errors and omissions ins. Certificates of insurance generally cost a small fee. Rental houses location companies permit offices will require a certificate. I don’t know what the prices are nationwide but in la I pay about $600 for ins-yearly 150 for E & O yearly that covers $25k worth of personal equipment and $25k of rental equipment. Certificates for rental houses and permit offices should be rolled into your expenses for each job that needs them. Hope that helps. I think you can also get slightly discounted insurance if you are APA or AmMPHOTO member.

MFGR specs say that the 10 ft model has a weight limit of only 7 pounds !
Most strobes are around 7-8 pounds, plus you need a modifier ! You automatically EXCEED the weight Limit !
how can you recommend that ?

This is true, but with it’s heavy build quality, and huge footprint (over 5 feet) I don’t hesitate to put my
Explor 600 Pro and 50” softbox, outdoors, without using sandbags ! Naturally I wouldn’t raise it to 10 feet, but for normal portraits of 6 ft people,mI see NO Problem ! It’s all in the huge footprint and build quality that gives me that confidence. It beats the hell out of my heavy Kupo lightstands, and the too are very impressive stands in their own right.

Looks like a chintzy piece of crap.. honestly its clearly not steel so the weight rating at the top is probably less than 9Lbs. With those slim extending legs and the fact that the pin on top is not solid but a plastic receiver. I would guess the rating is closer to 6Lbs. A battery powered head and modifier will probably bend the stand. Also a bubble level for your stand? You must have lots of time to waste. The problem with stands that have legs that fold up is the possibility that they will collapse when you start putting sandbags on them. All in all looks like an unsafe tool . Personally I don’t like to negligently play with the safety of the talent by using chintzy gear.. the liability is not worth it.just get yourself a smaller steel combo stand if you need to put a light on a stairwell or a leg under a couch use a c-stand...
