  • White rice is missing more than just fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Phytonutrients, such as gamma oryzanol, in brown rice may help explain the clinical benefits, and naturally pigmented rice varieties may be even healthier.

    Switching from white rice to brown rice enables overweight individuals to significantly reduce their weight, their waist size, their blood pressure, and the level of inflammation within their bodies. That sounds like it deserves a video, no? On its way! Stay tuned for Is it Worth Switching from White Rice to Brown? (nutritionfacts.org/video/is-it...) +Mats The Vegan Gym Rat I live around the corner of a Food Depot and they have a whole Spanish section, you can by huge bags of white, brown, red, and black rice (maybe like 10 lb bags) for $5 to $8.50. If it's expensive maybe you can just do half and half with some other kind of rice?

      Mats The Vegan Gym Rat not as expensive as the process stuff IMO, to make it last longer just use half black half brown rice...its the flavour & texture you can't beat though, and the more popular it becomes, the cheaper it will get, I never use to be able to buy it from my local grocer, now they stock it, soooo happy :)

    I've still got some wild rice, multicolored quinoa, amaranth, and non-GMO corn kernels for popping I haven't eaten. Wild rice goes good with broccoli and beans. Wild rice may take almost as much time to cook as some types of presoaked dried beans. The wild rice gives off, to me, a somewhat tea-like earthy pleasant aroma as it cooks. If I can break away some more from the pb with celery, bell pepper, and apples craze I've got going on then maybe I'll eat more rice and whatever. Good info about the rice though. I've heard it said, you should eat a rainbow. It just goes to show.

      xMRavenx Thank you for taking the time, but that is not a science oriented source. It's just another site promoting scientifically unsound BS like detox diets...
      The information is also pretty bad, actually. Arsenic concentrations in brown rice aren't a natural thing of the product, it depends on its place of origin.
      Consumer reports just played scare tactics here. What about this instead:
      _"by 2010, 88 percent of all chickens raised for human consumption in the US were given the arsenic-based drug roxarsone."_
      _"when you feed arsenical drugs to livestock, the arsenic doesn’t just magically disappear. Instead, trace amounts of arsenic fed to chicken are excreted in their manure - and when hundreds of thousands of chickens are raised on a factory farm year after year, the arsenic can accumulate pretty quickly, eventually contaminating soil, groundwater and surface waters"_

    I’m on a low glycemic diet and I’m really confused about the difference between white rice, wild rice, jasmine rice and brown rice as far as as its insulin loader it’s glycemic load. Which race is really the best for you and which brand of that rice is really the best and why who should be consuming what kinds of rice and why?

    • @happycook6737
      @happycook6737 2 роки тому

      You can blunt glycemic rise by pairing foods with higher index with foods with protein, fiber and/or fat. So a regular portion rice eaten with vegetables and tofu has a lower glycemic load than plain white rice eaten alone. Glycemic load is misleading and may encourage people to avoid eating foods that are healthy like rice. Eat vegetables (as many as you can), whole fruits (3 a day), whole starches (quinoa, barley, brown rice, boiled/baked potato/yam) and protein like beans, tofu. Don't eat anything made in factory or highly processed like bread, fake meat, etc Health improves, weight reduces, and good for the budget. Those things are almost all very low on the glycemic index.

      +Edward Judge Arsenic in rice is a problem.
      The following tips should help reduce the arsenic content of your rice:
      -Use plenty of water when cooking.
      -Wash the rice before cooking. This method may remove 10-28% of the arsenic.
      -Brown rice contains higher amounts of arsenic than white rice. If you eat large amounts of rice, the white variety may be a better choice.
      -Choose aromatic rice, such as basmati or jasmine.
      -Choose rice from the Himalayan region, including North India, North Pakistan and Nepal.
      -If possible, avoid rice that is grown during the dry season. The use of arsenic-contaminated water is more common during that time.

    Can you do an article on Manganese? every website says 11mg is the upper limit and exceeding that can be harmful. 1 cup of uncooked brown rice is 6.9 mg which is a lot. I have a meal plan saved on cronometer which uses white rice in one of the meals and that entire day is under 11mg of Manganese (10.6 mg), but if I replaced the white rice with brown rice it would bump the intake of Manganese up to 15.5mg for that day.

    • @annienewtonkirby425
      @annienewtonkirby425 8 років тому

      +crazywaffleking are you cooking the rice? One cup of cooked brown rice only has about 1.967 mg of manganese, whereas one cup of uncooked brown rice has about 5.278 mg of manganese. So if you are cooking the rice then you should be fine.

    • @crazywaffleking

      +Annie Newton 1 cup of uncooked rice turns into 2-3 cups of cooked rice. Obviously I cook the rice but the portion size is starting with 1 cup uncooked.

    • @tamcon72
      @tamcon72 8 років тому

      +houndjog Many, many rice varieties are not grown in China, or elsewhere where arsenic contaminated water is not used for irrigation. Texas-grown rice is broadly contaminated with all kinds of things, for example. www.fda.gov/Food/FoodborneIllnessContaminants/Metals/ucm319924.htm Please stop with the slightly jingoistic hysterics; you're not helping.

    • @ianrickey208
      @ianrickey208 8 років тому

      tamcon72 The FDS list does not list Texas specifically. Since most USA origin wild rice is from Wisconsin are you saying not to eat rice from there?

    • @tamcon72
      @tamcon72 8 років тому

      Trog Lobyte The most broadly distributed brown rice in the States is Texas grown; where US is listed next to a brown variety, especially short grain, Texas can be assumed. If you look at the table, wild rice ranks high on asrsenic load. Here's the most recent thing I could find about wild rice: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0048969799004647 I suppose avoiding it would be prudent. I don't buy wild rice from Roland, for example, because that's not really wild, but cultivated, and suffers from the same field contamination as regular rice. Real wild rice is hand harvested mostly by Native Americans trained in the process, and comes from running waters in Minnesota(also some is from Wisconsin and Michigan), and is less likely to be contaminated. Paddy grown rice is grown in still water, and this is a huge part of the problem. It is vulnerable to all kinds of run-off and dumping from the atmosphere.

    • @houndjog
      @houndjog 8 років тому

      tamcon72 .... most of the arsenic is found in the skin - making white rice a healthier option!

    The problem is also cocking time. While most white rice I buy is done in 10-12 minutes, the brown rice (at least the one I have access to) was still hard after 30 minutes.

    I, like another commentor, would like to know how does, "wild rice" stand up to brown rice and as a healthier food?

    • @laurieparis2203
      @laurieparis2203 7 років тому +1

      Marina Capri apparently wild rice doesn't absorb arsenic the way rice does, or perhaps it's bc it's not grown as a mono-crop, in man made paddies, but harvested from wild areas in boats, removed from pollution, where there are plenty of other plants to help filter the water.

    • @MissMarinaCapri
      @MissMarinaCapri 7 років тому +1

    If brown rice is soaked overnight, it cooks very quickly on the next day (about half the time!) and less water is needed. Usually 1 cup of soaked brown rice and 1 1/2 cups of water are enough. I use a pressure cooker (10 min. cooking time and 10 min. in the closed pot to use the rest of the heat).

      Myriam David There are different kinds of brown rice. However, uncle Ben's rice has little nutrition value because it was quite processed (at least twice) and Basmati rice also doesn't have a lot left after processing, but it is a bit better. I'm talking about the consequences on health.
