ManUnKind is a fair pick. And I can definitely agree about Hardwired being a bit over hyped. It was good but Death Magnetic was for sure stronger to me.
Agreed - the songs are much better (just shame about the production)
I just wish Death Magnetic had Hardwired production
It was a lot stronger in my eyes
@@tallicarule1991 I like DM’s production, but I’m more partial to more raw and like very distorted sounds anyways so, that’s just me, I think it adds character
Death Magnetic was the best thing Metallica did since ajfa
I thought that Hardwired was a good album, I will agree that ManUNkind was a bit of a weird song with its structure but I will say that the groove was pretty cool
I fully disagree, as my video dissects
@@BecomeTheKnight And I totally get that, still loved your commentary nonetheless, man
@@BecomeTheKnight yeah, you're simply wrong.
@@insunatic5062 Someone dislikes thing i like??? GROG SAYS YOU'RE WRONG!
seriously stfu dude
Opinions aren't "wrong" or "right" they're different for everyone.@@insunatic5062
I feel like Lars drumming throughout the album was even more boring than on load and reload and Kirk oh Kirk
The drumming was so awkward
Wow. No! Lars actually put in some time to lay down some cool fill ins and little solos with the floor toms and how he used every part of the entire drum set to make it interesting and fun to listen to. Sure it got simpler, but especially when you see him playing live around 95 to 99, he got so much better and you saw some new things going on. Even the doublebass was still sounding thick and loud.
Edit: im talking about the load and reload drums.
@@P3rm4frost I mean lars's drumming on load and reload does work for the hard rock/bluesy type of music on those albums, but still if you listen to the isolated tracks there is literally nothing special about them, on the other hand the drums in the black album are simple too but the fills are way more creative and helped to boost the songs further imo
@@juggerhuevo if you say so. Well sure it was hard rock/blues rock on those two albums but I felt that he actually started to play the drums rather than just doing what song told him to play along and get a bit more serious about using the entire drum set as a whole playground. In an abstract way like Neil Peart is doing in Rush.
Maybe im a bit biased because reload was the first Metallica album I heard as a kid and exposure to drums and it stuck with me all those years. But I love the whole let loose vibe on this album. The black album sounded a bit too sincere even tho the ass kicking in songwriting by Bob rock was definitely needed. The three years of the whole black album tour made them play better and on Load and Reload I felt a certain relief that they could do whatever they want and let go of the totally sincere metal dictated songstructure. And some tracks feel a bit off and too much out of the box, for sure. But the whole feel good summer vibe to just play and have fun with it and not giving a shit about any critics made Lars a much more confident drummer.
But as I said: maybe I'm biased. Reload made me to pick up drumsticks too when I was 11 years old and inspired me to be a free open minded drummer, to go through the world with open ears and feel a song, rather than be ultra precise and on point.
Hey Mike! People probably already asked you this, and sorry if they did. But are you going to do this 10 worst songs series with another bands? Love your channel!
Maybe. And thank you
@@BecomeTheKnight Oh, please do! Love this series!
@@BecomeTheKnight you shloud do it with the beatles
@@danielbatmanj349 YES
10 worst Imagine Dragons songs lookin awfully tasty 😏
ManUNkind? That's the pick from an album that has Murder One on it? Alright... ManUNkind is flawed, sure, but it has some very fun riffs and (finally!) a tangible Rob contribution. Definitely not the worst song on HTSD in my opinion. What the hell were they thinking while making the video though...
Edit: Man alive, that solo is so much worse than I remembered it.
Yeah, definitely not the worst, but completely forgettable.
I see you answered your own question there ^w^
YES FINALLY SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T LIKE MURDER ONE
just because it's a tribute to a legend, doesn't make it a good fucking song
🤷♂️🤷♂️ Murdee One has something approaching a structure
@@LZ4COMPRESSION I get what you mean. If murder one didn't have the tribute thing going for it it wouldn't be as beloved cuz the lyrics and many parts of the vocal delivery are very corny. The only thing it has going for it is the breakdown part as well as a few other interesting riffs. Everything else is kinda forgettable
Hardwired isn't a terrible album, I enjoy a few songs from it but to me death magnetic was a better thrash album with all nightmare long being my favorite from that album and it sounded more original, but of course they're all in their 50s-60s and they've done it all so now they're just gonna write what they want, kind of like how slipknot just giving the finger and writing whatever they want, and yeah it really does sound like they're trying too hard to be prog when they did it right on and justice for all minus the bass issue, it's about as progressive as a thrash band could be I think
Death Magntic has always felt like AJFA part 2 to me. Longer songs, more proggy, exaggerated drum sound, etc…I get a similar vibe from both albums. AJFA is the superior one, but DM is a damn good album too. Hardwired feels more like Load meets the black album with a couple thrash songs thrown in.
People don't like this song because it's weird. But that's exactly why I love it. I'll dare to say it's one of the strongest on the album.
Finally! someone that understands that the intro doesn't deserve to be pushed away like it did to be replace with a bunch of random jam parts. nice vid.
I love most of Hardwired. This is one of the songs I didn't really like. Spit out the bone is an absolute fucking banger though
I still don't get what people see in that song
@@BecomeTheKnight honestly it's the last half of the song. I think it's absolutely kick ass. I'm sure there's reasons it's not as good. But idk, I like newer metallica when it's like this song or All Nightmare long.
@@BecomeTheKnight ratio
@@djello7289 one more like to complete the ratio
Dude I enjoy these videos A LOT, it's a daily ritual already to wait for the new release. I've been watching you since the early early days and just want to tell you thank you!
Hot take: Lords of summer is one of their best songs and if all of hardwired had that kind of energy it would be an amazing Album.
isn't that a bonus track
@@mustaineboots Yup it was made specially for live shows. But it's better than any other track on the album.
Imma say no
DEFINITELY not one of their best songs. not even by a longshot. but it is up there for top songs of hardwired
Lords of summer one of their best? What you smoking there bro
Will you do this with other bands(Dream Theater ,Opeth etc)?
Maybe
Honestly, Hardwired is my least favorite Metallica album besides St. Anger. There are so many forgettable songs, especially in the second half. Spit Out the Bone and Moth Into Flame might be the only good tracks on here, with the rest being average to forgettable.
Hardwired would be a much better album if they took the first half and Spit Out the Bone and turned that into a 45-50 minute album. Hopefully, Metallica will keep their next album short, but we know that won't happen.
Have you heard Halo on Fire?
Now That We're Dead, Atlas Rise, Spit out the Bone, Halo on Fire, Murder One ( a tribute to Lemmy) this track^, and the title track. HARD disagree with your statement bro.
@@alexanderjakel8001 am i savage, dream no more, and here comes revenge are all good too
SAME
there's only a few good songs on Hardwired... and the solos are horrible imo (except Spit out the Bone and Halo)@@musicbymann
I'd say the only standout song of the album would be "Spit Out The Bone". A great album ending song; kinda reminds of "Dyers Eve"
Here comes revenge is pretty unique
I also really like Halo on Fire and Here Comes Revenge.
The rest of songs are kinda average
And even then I wouldn't care if this album never existed tbh
Spit out the Bone is very solid - if it were on the first side of this album, they could have binned the entire second album.
@@SG-qx1fg Now that were dead is pretty unecessary
Hey Mike! I love the vids, and the series so far! (Hope the algorithm is liking it 🤘) I'm not a big fan of this album, but was wondering if you consider any of the songs a "plus sign" from it?
No plus signs from me
@@BecomeTheKnight yeah same here on this one
That bleed section broke me 🤣🤣🤣. Yea the snare and bass drum do sound nice, and I agree with you on this album, wasn’t my favourite. Keep on rocking dude!
🤘🤘🔥🔥
One thing that I’ll give this song is I really enjoyed the live version. Idk what they changed but something about it made it good to me
Music/creativity is so fascinating…Is it peaks and valleys throughout an artists life or is there a point after which it’s just over? Metal in particular seems to suffer from this where there definitely is a point of no return. 🤔
Many prog bands never cease to come up with incredible stuff
Enjoying this series a lot!!
I think the lowest point of this album (in my humble opinion) is Confusion. That song had great ideas, but they are stretched too thin in an almost 7 minute song.
At least the S&M2 version is alright
@@flameosaurus1832 I feel like all their live recordings from Hardwired and Death Magnetic sound better than the originals (when James’ mic is on at least)
Confusion has one cool riff, and it's too boring
I still prefer it to cyanide.
loving these daily short & sweet vids
I really like ManUnKind actually. It’s not great but it’s still good in my opinion.
What makes it good?
@@BecomeTheKnight I like the rough edges, it’s weird riffs and odd transitions give it character in my opinion. Also, the lyrics have that kinda awkward stilted kind of feeling that can be found in some early Metallica as well.
@@BecomeTheKnight are you just hellbent on being contradictory?
I wouldn't say so. I'm certainly interested in critiquing erroneous critics. I myself didn't much like this song at first... that changed over time. This does occasionally occur with a fair quantity of music we hear in life. I didn't like ...And Justice For All after first hearing it decades ago. Now it's one of my favorite albums. Sometimes our immediate subjective reactions/feelings don't perceive a potentially objective reality. Now I would argue the music in Justice is objectively good, although I initially thought it was unlistenable. Listen again. Or don't. I don't give a rat's plop.
@@insunatic5062 what? I’m not certain how this is relevant to my comment. I certainly like Justice though.
9:53 unto dust you Bleed by Messhuggah
What’s criminal on this album is how many times Lars reverts to that good ole snare roll.
Loving this series !
I only listened to the Classic Metallica (Kill Em All - Black Album) Do you think I should give chance to the new albums? Is worth it?
Hi, Mike! I'm loving the series! Do you plan on making a top 10 favorite Metallica songs in detail like this series? I would love to hear your take on your favorite Metallica songs.
he did a list of 21 Metallica songs a few years ago
Maybe....we'll see
@@BecomeTheKnight its a perfect contrast to this list and seeing you geek out a bit on Metallica would be great
@@brandonhey7797 I know. I want to see his second by second reaction and insight of his favorite Metallica songs.
@@BecomeTheKnight Thanks, Mike!
As a whole this song is pretty awkward and forgettable, but the intro by itself is one of my favorite moments on the album. It doesn’t really fit with the rest of the song though
Vince Neil at modern Mötley Crüe shows be like: 4:16
The chorus ends just as underwhelmingly as The End of the Line (End+Of+The+Line!), or Broken, Beat .... it's become a trend with weaker new-era Metallica. Thanks for another awesome reaction.
So far, you are spot on…looking forward to the rest
Hey Mike, I love your videos and your music. In fact, I listen to you guys just about every week. I plan on moving to Nashville in roughly 2 years, but I am not nearly as talented or as good at writing intricate songs. What would you say to someone like me who wants to pursue music, but is not nearly as good as you guys?
Get better. Learn the stuff you love, try to make something just as good. Then run away from it
Tbh I don’t agree with Mike. I think Manunkind is actually really interesting, because it has so many silhouettes. Freddy Mercury once said „you can do with music whatever you want, just don’t make it boring“. Of course music is always a matter of taste. Everybody has it’s own. So well it’s life ig
Just a quick note. The intro sounded a lot like the intro to My Friend of Misery.
OK, this one I get. I love the intro and I love how King Diamond most of the rest feels, but this really had to grow on me as a Metallica song. I still say "Murder One" is the worst on Hardwired... to Self-Destruct, but it hurts to say that because the solo is so redeeming.
I haven't even watched the video yet, but I feel safe responding to all your points with, "Yeah, fair."
Lol
How could anyone hate Murder ONE IT ABOUT LEMMY KILMISTER u ppl are fucking Nuts u HATE LEMMY U MUST HATE URSELF
The movement from E to F# seems to be the main idea, as they include it in almost all riffs, if not every riff.
For an album that is them trying to go back to the style of the first 3 albums, this sounds more like a 90s Metallica reject, rather than something from KEA, RTL, or MOP
There's a lot more 90s in here the deeper you dig, yeah
@@BecomeTheKnight Hardwired is an amalgam of all the previous records. It proves to be quite the comprehensive and enjoyable album. I'd love to know why your ears are so defective. Did you experience Chernobyl firsthand?
Great idea! I love pissed off Mike! Keep it up!
I’m enjoying these videos man. Looking forward to each one
Here's a fun thought: Imagine this song with the St. Anger snare, considering how many snare hits it has :)
It's really odd to hear Mike talk about lyrics so much XD. Honestly this series just makes me want to go listen Metallica. Great video Mike keep up the good work love the channel sorry to hear what youtube are doing to you.
Personally I like that song especially the intro with the beautiful bass and clean guitar! Hardwired is a very enjoyable album to me because of the catchy/anthemic writing. But some songs do overstay their welcome though for sure
I didn't find any of the writing on this album catchy
@@BecomeTheKnight Yeah thats fair, I loved moth info flame, spit out the bone and halo on fire especially on the album
@@BecomeTheKnight I feel the same way with Death Magnetic. Everyone shits on the production, but they seem to forget that the songwriting on that album was almost just as bad.
the whole song overstays its welcome. the song should have been based on the intro and pick up from there. If that part is not good enough just discard it. why should you let something there if you're not going to do anything with it. This song and murder one feel completely disjointed like if they recorded a bunch of excerpts and just superglued them all together. Which is kind of what they usually do.
Edit:typo
@@seanwechsler6783nah it was WAY better than hardwired
The lowest point of Hardwired: Kirk’s uninspired solos.
The high point: Spit Out The Bone.
Spot on.
Wow you have such a sunny disposition. I bet people just love your energy.
Big fan. Keep up the good work. Rock on 🤘
Probably the first on I'd tend to disagree on. The heavy intro part could've been way better (cut in half maybe) and the solo was pretty trash but the rest of the song is pretty awesome imo (the vocal performance and the vocal melodies in general sell this song to me the most probably). Murder One is the one song on this album that I really don't get the hype for on the other hand
Hi have you listened to ghost's new album? Any thoughts?
Are you going to do "10 best The Doors songs" ? That will be great
Love your channel!
I love Spit Out The Bone, Hardwired, Atlas Rise, and Here Comes Revenge is interesting. I think if they cut out parts of Murder One, Dream No More, Moth Into Flame, and Am I Savage, they would be great tracks. The others were just doomed to begin with.
Nah, Am I Savage is perfect how it is.
9:53 Thank you Mike! Now I can gif that into eternity!
Being that you also brought up Death Magnetic, 1 gripe I had about that record was that the snare drum was turned up way too fucking loud. Like every time I finish the whole damn album it feels like my ears are ringing.
Funnily enough I had the same opinion about Hardwired that I did Load/Reload. Toss the pathetically weak and confusing songs in order to consolidate the album into 8 or 9 excellent cuts. It suddenly becomes a much better experience.
That snare placement on the 2nd beat of each 6/4 measure is a huge part of what makes everything so awkward. It’s really difficult to work within.
Love this series and what is your opinion on mastodon like do you listen to an you there music regulatory? Thank you for the content.
They're good
I wasn't too keen on Man Unkind at first, but it really grew on me to the point it became one of my favourites on Hardwired!
Not looking for a reply just pure love from my side ❤️. Been a viewer of this channel for a past couple of years and the biggest gift you have given to me is because of you I gave Opeth a listen and they are in my top 3 artists now. Keep putting out content, lots of love to you and your channel.
I'm happy to be useful 🙏
Haven't listened to hardwired since it came out. I'm scratching my head, asking why did I love this album in high school.
i fucking love your commentary, only just found your channel somehow
Love this series
I love Hardwired… the album had, for the most part, a cohesive theme. Spit out the bone is my favorite track. Man-un-kind is definitely the weakest link though, or perhaps murder one.
I would like to amend to include that a consistent issue I had on this album is that all the solos sounded like they belonged on one of their 90’s albums.
Noticing a theme with all of these songs so far, there are moments in each of them where you think "this could get interesting" and then it just goes nowhere, kinda like everything is undercooked.
I feel like so much of went wrong with modern Metallica boils down to Lars/the drum parts. Songs like this have a decent to solid riff but then the drum part just feels completely lost and void of flow. Like take a song like Harvester of Sorrow and there's these simple riffs that have all of these interesting drum fills and variations that make the song a blast. Modern lars either plays it completely safe and just follows the guitars, or does some weird unfit rhythm that does not mesh at all. Comparing any modern Metallica record to Justice or Puppets it sounds like a completely different drummer.
Agreed. I can't think of a single memorable drum part from lars in recent times. He plays it so painfully safe. It's like he's playing ac/dc drum parts for metal songs and it does not mesh well. James is a riff monster but lars just sonically strips everything back. The only thing that stands out are the really wierd fills he does, especially when he's playing live
hey mike, you said once that you were going to make a video for metallica like the one from PF, is this project still going?
I put it off because there was less of a story to tell. Most of Metallica's success was stumbling into things through hard work. They weren't trying to redefine anything. They were just being themselves. Most of the "interesting" stuff is drama, and i don't give a fuck about any if that
Hey man, I really enjoy your stuff. Great critique on these Metallica songs. I dont agree with everything but to each his own. My comment is about that vape pen. Is that a part of the "prog music SNOB" starter kit? It really drives the snob point home! Lol! Keep it up!
Hey Mike. You harp on production in a lot of your reviews a criticisms. Do you think that songwriting can make up for bad production, or do you think both have to be great to make a good song?
It's possible to have a good writing and performance overcome bad production.
Hey Mike, what are the grunge rock bands that you like? or have a soft corner for?
Potato Machine
I like this song, in fact this is one of my favorites on this album, but ok, I enjoy your videos. Keep on with the great work!
Hey Mike, you say that you dread listening to this album, so was wondering what ur thoughts were on Spit Out The Bone? Especially since it’s widely acclaimed by fans to be one of their best songs since the Black Album.
Spit out the Bone is extremely overrated
@@BecomeTheKnight Pathetic response to a question
Would you consider doing a leprous / Haken v. Pop music video like you did with opeth since both bands have incredible pop songs?
I have but i don't really care to tbh. I feel like that phase of my life is over
Aw shit, I actually kind of, sort of liked this track. Your analysis was good though, definitely understand why this song is considered forgettable and not great, it def does go all over the place throughout its runtime. Loving this series so far as well, waiting patiently to see the next 7 days 🤘.
Wtf can you not still like the track just because he doesn’t like it? 😂
@@7-cheese333 fr I think the less we care about what other people think the better were off, besides who wants to spend their entire life hating a song just because some people have their heads so far up their asses they cant appreciate music when its just music (no hate to this guy I like his other stuff) I just dont understand hating songs that sound perfectly okay and then calling them the worst, so what if its not the same as every album before its different and music is subjective anyways 🤷
I found particularly on Hardwired and Death Magnetic that they actually left a lot of the best songs that were supposed to be on the album on the deluxe versions or a later EP. Lords of Summer is definitely one of the best songs on Hardwired but its only on the Deluxe version. Same with the songs on Beyond Magnetic EP, being better than a lot of the songs on the main album. How this song made it on the base album and a track like Lords of Summer didn't is kinda beyond me.
Can't say I've listened to either of those
@@BecomeTheKnight I bet.
Have you ever listened to the Black Crowes? If so, what is your opinion on them?
Not a massive fan, though I've met Luther a few times. Very chill dude. Mad respect for him and what he does. He's a REAL musician. Not some clout-chasing dirt bag.
I feel like most of my love for HTSD comes from it being my first Metallica album that I listened to all the way through when I was getting into metal at 14. Nowadays I only listen to Halo on Fire and Spit Out the Bone that's about it, but I still have a soft spot for it. Its kinda like St. Anger in the way that it can be considered good if you're new to metal and don't know about better music.
I think the other song he will do is Halo on Fire ,i dislike it even more than this one
St. Anger was that for me. It was the first Metallica album i bought myself
@@BecomeTheKnight I’m so sorry
@@mrbungle3310 Halo On Fire is a banger
@@BecomeTheKnight perhaps this is why you're so confused on just about everything Metallica.
I hated the title at first, but I started hearing it more as a Danzig or ozzy tribute and starting 'getting it' a little more, it's a 6/10 for me
Have you made any videos about how to better understand tone, and how to get one you like? If not, will you ever do that?
Probably not for a long time. Gear is extremely important
Was that like five or six different riffs before the song actually starts?
Ironically, this video actually made me really like this song. I hadn't really payed much attention to it before but something seems to click with me for this song now lol.
I'm just waiting till you put one of my underrated favs on this list lol.
But so far I agree with the videos you've made, it's always fun to criticize the bands we love from time to time.
Would you look at Dystopia by Megadeth and compare it to Hardwired as a study of how bands change or don't change with age?
I wonder if the intro was an attempt to do something like what they did with the intro to Fight Fire With Fire only Man, that's UNGood.
I thought that starting with St. Anger, then Death Magnetic, then Hardwired, the albums have gradually gotten more listenable, but that is a very low bar to clear. Then again, I haven't listened to DM in quite some time, so I'd have to double check to see if it is better than Hardwired, if I care to invest the time to listen to them again.
Any plans for Opeth series?
No
Hey Mike! How much do you enjoy Blind Guardian, and how good do you think they actually are?
They're pretty fun
I never liked manunkind till a couple of days ago which i gave the second cd of hwsd a second try, and I kind of like them all. its not just that I can listen to them now, I find them actually good
I've heard a lot of people call this a double-album, and I don't understand why. Does that mean something more than simply the number of discs, because I got one disc with 12 songs?
I never bought the physical, but on Spotify they split it between 2 "discs"....
🤷♂️
This entire album could have honestly fit on a single CD.
WITHOUT A DOUBT
I feel like one of the problems with this album was side 2 very weak songs. A lot of long intros that didn’t have much to them. Minus Spit out the Bone nothing impressive on side 2
Better yet, why was there 2 sides?
Love this series man you should do more shit like this
👍
Would you consider doing something like this series again for other bands?
Maybe
I just realized James Hetfield looks like he could be Ted Nugent's brother.
Yeah dude, the feed on my UA-cam home page is recommending videos from 9-10 months ago, but your video is not there. Would you like me to screenshot this for you?
7:30 "Toss the other one I'm gonna talk about the fuck out"
I can hear 'Am I Savage?' sobbing in the Hardwired room already, cause it knows it's the one...
Mic, love the vids, I personally like the song but definitely see where the clashing of riffs comes along, especially looking at how Lars pieces together songs. Some songs are going to sound like a mash of jumbled up riffs.
Changing deum parts would go a long way
The intro sort of reminded me of My Friend of Misery.
Anything after Justice For All you can keep.
I love Hardwired. It was great overall, Man Unkind is easily the weakest part though. Fair pick
Seems like after the Black album they threw out song structure- it's like they went through their riff tapes n just spliced em together. A few killer single riffs, the rest are mostly junk you can hear some kid noodling at the local guitar store on a weekend.
i feel like i'm getting beat over the head by the snare in this song
You should take your absolute least favorite from these ten, and make a good song from it, like change lyrics, melody and arrangement into something recognizable but different.
That's not a bad idea
The intro is great. I wish it was a slow acoustic tune all the way through like to live is to die. Would have been nice to have on the album instead of what it was.
I love these honest reviews.
