Hi Friends! Thanks for telling folks how to fix gasoline leaks on the "A"! A lot a folks with vintage cars tend to have garage fires, and it could be because of fuel leaks. We want Model "A" Fords to be around in the Twenty-Second, Twenty-Third, and all future centuries!

My rebuilds were mostly 1960s-1990s carburetors. (FLOATS) Some of the early ones had brass floats similar to the Model A's. We checked them with the float removed and by shaking and listening for gas sloshing around inside then you knew it was leaking causing a flood problem. Newer floats were made of hollow plastic or fuel-tolerant foam same test was for the plastic floats, but for the foam ones you needed to stick your fingernail into it, and if it felt soft then it was bad. (NEEDLE AND SEATS) A bad needle and seat would cause your carburetor to overflow into the intake and flood the engine testing was done by removing the carburetor flipping it upside down to drain out any gas and then while upside down taking a deep breath and blowing on the fuel port to see if the needle had sealed having the carburetor upside down makes the float put pressure on the needle and seat just as if fuel was still in the bowl no air should pass and this should be done after any rebuiled. Today all diaphragms and needles use Viton materials to resist chemicals used in the fuel.
Later model cars with fuel evaporation control would sometimes have a vacuum control valve that when the diaphragm went bad would pull gas from the gas tank through the charcoal canister and pour into the intake, if it kept siphoning it could empty the tank.
If an engine overheated it could warp the carburetor causing it to crack the housing which would cause a leak internally this can be hard to find and generally means a new carburetor is needed.
Ford's old two-barrel carburetor had what was called a power valve this also if bad would pull extra fuel into the carburetor and cause it to run rich or flood if really bad.
On some one-barrel models if you over-tightened the air cleaner lid it would warp the upper housing, you knew this had happened because it would also jam the choke butterfly either open or closed causing the engine to run rich or a hard cold start.
Good luck and have fun, Paul and Tina. Mike, ASE Master.

    Hi Tina
I would like to add- turn off the shut-off value inside the cab under the tank before opening the carburetor. This is from past experiences

I always shut off the fuel at the tank after driving mine so if that shut off isn't working it's very inexpensive and easy to replace and very cheap insurance that you don't have a fire or fumes in your garage. That said, if the float level is too high you could have some fuel seepage but I would suspect that would come with some running issues too.
