Many many (MANY! lol) hearing people call what Jack was doing "translating". So, no worries. Translating actually means taking something written in one language and "translating" to a different written language. What Jack is doing is called Interpreting. It is literally the most difficult kind of Interpreting. He is seeing ASL (which is a completely different language than English) and interpreting it to spoken English. Simultaneously! It's hard enough to do that with two different spoken languages, ex Spanish to English. But, to do that with a visual language to a spoken language... well, some Neurolinguistic researchers have called it "impossible". Theoretically, of course. But, it happens and it's amazing. I've done it myself for the last 40 years. It's thrilling on so many levels.
This was an amazing movie . I've watched it so many times.. Marlee is an amazing actress. And the whole.ensemble was magical to watch . The actress playing Ruby killed it in her emotions.. ASL is more then just signing with your hands it's a whole body language.. and I felt it every single time I watch .
I got Apple TV literally just to watch Ted Lasso. I watched Coda-a film I’d never even heard of-on a whim and holy shit! What an amazing story. So glad I discovered before the Oscars.
Can we take a moment to applaude....well....all the role players here? 1) Marlee...for being so easy-going, humourous, smart, and completely comfortable with the hearing world. It is more than I can say about the Hearers toward the deaf. 2) Stephen, for being so relaxed and gracious. Interviewed her like any regular guest. If the camera was focused on him only, I'd just assume it was a regular interview with a male guest. 3) The unsung hero: the interpreter. Need I say more? It was flawless. Always one step ahead. Articulate. And kept it flowing. Was such an amazing, yet regular interview. You would have to credit all the roleplayers for the effortless synchrony.
I first watched her in The West Wing and my god what a presence she had in that show. I found myself smiling every time she's in a scene. I was really rooting for her and Josh 😍
Marlees seems so cool! Definitely going watch this! You can tell her interpretor really knows her, best I've ever seen in timing and correctly portray her humor she clearly shows in her face expressions as well 😊
I did a representation of her in my English class and searching about her background, I realized how strong she was. It was an inspirational story to read. I recommend you guys to do so as it might be a motivation for you to overcome your obstacles as well.
As a disabled person, I have so much love and appreciation for actors with various disabilities. It is far too often that characters are written to be disabled and then an able-bodied actor “plays” disabled. I hope with this kind of representation that will become a thing of the past because truly the industry is missing out on so many talented people by overlooking them for their disability.
I will watch the movie as soon as I can, because it sounds wonderful! But I think it is a kind of remake/inspired by the french film "La famille Bélier", which is also about a deaf family, kind of relying on their hearing daughter, who wants to follow her passion of singing. A very emotional, beautiful film that moved me to tears. I am sure CODA will be great though, I am looking forward to watching it :)
“La famille Belier” is a decent movie in the eyes of people who can’t really tell the difference between hearing actors acting deaf and deaf actors in roles of deaf characters however “la famille belier” caused massive outrage as they were an all hearing cast, CODA has rectified this and included deaf actors in the roles they should rightly be performing and CODA has received many rewards and nominations whereas la famille belier did not fare as well. It shows what good and correct casting can do and the talent of deaf actors. (P.s I hope you found this interesting and you enjoy watching CODA and have a lovely day wherever you are.)
@@juliad368 They do give the movie a shout out. On the multiple press functions they mention the inspiration. Even at the Oscars the screenplay award stated the movie it was based on. A lot of American movies are remakes of international films, I also believe the creators of the original were producers on the American version.
Just watched the film... incredible.I've switched my vote from Power Of the Dog to CODA. It's really a fantastic, heart-warming, and honest movie,. Splendind acting.. i was a puddle... :)
As long as disabled actors don't get picked for roles where the disability has little to no influence on the story, then able-bodied actors should not get disabled roles. Said by me, someone who uses a wheelchair at times. I still remember an actor in the series Las Vegas. A background character who used a wheelchair. Not because the scene needed one. He was just there.
I think it was Madam Secretary (one of those white house shows if not that one) had an office staff member background extra who was in a wheelchair too, clearly they just gave the part to a person in a wheelchair, cause, why not? That's how it should be! (but for main parts as well)
I'm still watching this vid (only 1:16 in) but I have to say, after watching the first interview - that has to be the best translator I've ever seen/heard! He's so flawless in what he does, to me! Marlee is of course a gem too!
You know, people of all backgrounds are being held back as a unit, so there's no longer a stable baseline as to the notion that people of any background can do a wide range of things. Therefore, it makes more sense to remove the qualification that people who are deaf specifically are capable of doing anything and apply that statement to everybody as a unit. We must always make a part of our thoughts and our actions the idea that we are individually and collectively capable of great things.
Being HoH from a family that’s various types of hearing/HOH/half-Deaf (and from a new england town) this movie hit me HARD. Loved it!! Go watch it now!!
Marlee is so amazing in so many ways! She was absolutely correct in putting her foot down for Deaf actors! As an Interpreter for 40 years, I can't even watch movies that use hearing actors and hoping we'll buy that they're fluent in ASL! It's painful. Most hearing people will be clueless, of course, but Deaf and Hard of Hearing folks, as well as Hearing who are fluent in ASL are not an insignificant group. Just like we no longer use make up to make white actors look Asian, or Latinx etc, it's also inappropriate to put Hearing people in Deaf roles. Brava Ms Matlin!
She makes my heart smile. And it has nothing whatsoever to do with her happening to be deaf. I think that she's a remarkable lady. She's so intelligent, witty, natural, beautiful, and sexy! If you'd like to see a fantastic documentary, she stars in one of my favorites called What the Bleep do we know? ( Down the Rabbit Hole) about Quantum Theory. She's as superb in it as she is in everything else that she does.

I have always enjoyed watching Marlee Matlin. what I didn't know was that she has 4 kids!!
I was hoping Colbert had asked her if her own children were deaf, if she was a CODA in real life herself....
I believe she said in the other clip from this interview that her children are hearing/CODA.
I’d infer that her parents are hearing from this anecdote, but that’d be interesting to look up.
@@margaritadiaz7545 Very old comment to respond to but it is rare for Deaf parents to have Deaf children as well. Most Deaf adults with kids will have hearing children.
I loved Coda, it was very insightful and informative.
interpreter here is incredible for keeping up with someone as awesome and funny as her.
Both legends.
I could literally watch her interviews all day, she is wonderful. CODA is an amazing movie and she was great in it, I have to check out more movies she's made!
Props to her translator. Very talented.
That is a wonderful interpreter they've got. Really does justice to her energy and charm. Way more natural than some interpretations I've seen done.
I got Apple TV literally just to watch Ted Lasso. I watched Coda-a film I’d never even heard of-on a whim and holy shit! What an amazing story. So glad I discovered before the Oscars.
CODA is such a beautiful film. Everyone should see it.
She's the best! She was one if the first people I started following on Twitter a few years ago, and she has a SAVAGE sense of humour!
I love how there were hearing impaired CREW members apart of CODA. If you have not seen this movie “CODA”, go see it.
I would love to see her Colbert Questionert!!!
I remember seeing her on Seinfeld and thinking how fantastic she was and am so happy she finally making a late show appearance!
I Loved Coda! Wonderful, heartwarming, really good story, and really good acting!
Charming and communicates so succintly with humour. I'll have to see this film, just because of her.
Coda is also a musical term... and If the daughter is a musician... Double Entendre!
Wow... that was very cool, very interesting. Bravo!~! Have her on again! Terrific!!
I have always loved her acting. Such a lovely lady!
Wow, that interpreter was just amazing. Who can do that in real time??? He can.
I’ve seen her in CSI and the magicians, she is truly an impressive woman, hats off to her
I am happy that movies like Sound of Metal (which was a great movie) and Coda are being recognized by its actors....
I LOVE REPRESENTATION! The more we learn about the lives of other people, the more empathy we develop.
I love Marlee so much she is so talented and long overdue for this credit and attention
She is a talented actress. I am glad she continues to find inspiring roles. Can't wait to watch Coda.
she's so talented and charming and beautiful. I love her. we need more of her.
(but for main parts as well)
In the case of a Deaf character who signs in the movie, fluency is also a huge thing.
She’s amazing!! Such a great film! Loved every moment of it!!
This movie became an instant favorite. My dad is half deaf. It was so relatable and moving and hilarious.
another reason this Late Show separates itself from the others. Patience, inclusion, awareness. Just so great.
I thought Stephen did this interview perfectly. He talked to Marlee, not her interpreter. Her interpreter was amazing.
I love ASL it's such an expressive language! I love Marlee! She's an amazing actress!
I'm still watching this vid (only 1:16 in) but I have to say, after watching the first interview - that has to be the best translator I've ever seen/heard! He's so flawless in what he does, to me! Marlee is of course a gem too!
They've been working together for decades
She seems so cool and funny! Everyone go see this movie, it’s amazing!
This was an amazing interview. And that interpreter was so quick!
I randomly decided to watch Coda and ended up in tears. Great movie. Engaging, funny, moving.
Being HoH from a family that’s various types of hearing/HOH/half-Deaf (and from a new england town) this movie hit me HARD. Loved it!! Go watch it now!!
This was some great energy and translating!
It was such a good movie! Made me tear up. So well done.
She looks amazing, that dress 🥰🙌🏾
She makes my heart smile. And it has nothing whatsoever to do with her happening to be deaf. I think that she's a remarkable lady. She's so intelligent, witty, natural, beautiful, and sexy! If you'd like to see a fantastic documentary, she stars in one of my favorites called What the Bleep do we know? ( Down the Rabbit Hole) about Quantum Theory. She's as superb in it as she is in everything else that she does.
