Any Tolkien fan would understand that - IF - a portrayal of this age was to be attempted. It would have to be done very carefully and need much time to reveal just how powerful Morgoth was. The fellowship had an incredibly tough task against Sauron in the war of the rings. However, the war for the Silmarills was much more difficult and ruthless. Sauron was nothing compared to Morgoth. Morgoth is really interesting. Morgoth was supremely powerful but also supremely petty. He spread his power into all the matter in Arda, The entire Solar system. He cannot be destroyed without destroying the solar system which the Valar are not allowed to do. This lowered his power level tremendously. At Utumno he SHOULD have won but he was already weakened from this. Both he and the valar were shocked at how weak he'd become. At the same time because he corrupted all matter that means physical bodies are all cursed with Morgothness. The conceit is everytime you get sick or fight or are mean to someone that is you giving in to Morgothness of your body. And it is always active trying to ruin your day because Morgoth hates you on a personal level because you exist independently of him. His goal is literally to destroy your life one paper cut and stubbed toe at a time if thats what it takes. It's a running theme, more corrupted by evil you are the less you can actually function.

That's just brilliant writing my god man... The part where the elves set up their kingdoms around Morgoth following their chasing of him is just tactically genious. Seeing how the map shows Doriath having so much fertile lands. Having cornered the dark lord like this and then embedding around him. what a saga! Than 4 centuries end with fire and poison.
Really Good to see quite a few channels, like these, that are dedicated in sharing with us the DEEP Lore of Tolkien's World! Particularly in light of current shows, that have completely ruined his works by sub-par and WILD adaptations, that have the potential to completely upend his legacy for younger audiences. 15:50 Point of information, the graphic seems to imply the festival was in Formenos, or at least the Valar assembled at Formenos, however the festival of reconciliation was in Manwë and Varda's lofty halls at the summit of Taniquetil and along its slopes. After the attack, the assembly moved to the Ring of Doom the shadow of the Trees from which the Valar attempted to restore the them and discovered their need for the Silmarils to do so. While Fëanor hemmed and hawed over what to do, a messenger arrived with the terrible news of Melkor's raid on his home.

I've seen this story on many different middle earth specializing channels but none of them have the production value that you guys do. Very cool video.
*TL;DR I’m whining and venting because I’m amazed death metal still exists and has a fan base even though many like myself grew out of the edgy phase of listening to it after they were 15* Of course that’d be the name of a band or a song for that genre, it’s grown men that never got out of their awkward, edge lord phase and made a career out of it. And 99% of the fan base are angry guys. So the groupies they do manage to get once in awhile are so few and far between, and it ain’t like they’re 8’s or 9’s, either. Richard Christy of the Howard Stern show used to play for Death and toured all over the globe as one of the best drummers in the world for his time. And he’s said multiple times he went like 10 years without being with a woman, there’s zero groupies Lmao. I used to love death metal and Viking metal when I was around 14-15. Then I got my teen angst and edgy old phase out of my system and it amazes me that full adults will still listen to some guy screaming and screeching into a microphone and never grew out of that. Now, people have made it such a cliche to say that “I listen to just about every genre,” when really they don’t. But it’s true in my case. But one that I just can’t get over how bad it sounds is what used to be my favorite. I can’t listen to it anymore. The funniest and also most sad part about it, it’s that the band mates playing the instruments, specifically the drummer that has to have so much dexterity and amazing speed with perfect rhythm, the double bass included with the upper body going super Saiyan and destroying the drums, just so wasted playing to a genre destroyed by the vocals. Whiny vent, over.
@@thebadaidsit's not simply screaming and screeching into a microphone. It's a methodical and actually quite difficult collection of vocal techniques. Not to mention the technical complexity of the other instruments. The technique we call screaming has a pitch to it that is consistently and skillfully maintained by the vocalist, while adding numerous forms of texture over top. Death metal genres have more extreme (and creative) vocal deliveries than most metal genres, but there is lots of variation to it across metal. It remains a fact that metal is the most technically complex genre in today's world, only really rivaled by jazz. If you want something to analytically listen to, your best bet is either metal, jazz, or classical. If you want to viscerally listen, probably metal, blues, or EDM is the way to go. Metal just happens to be the genre that gives the overlap of visceral and complex content. Distorted vocals are an acquired taste, but there is plenty of metal with clean vocals, and the backing instrumentation (which I personally view as more important) shouldn't be discounted, regardless of the vocal delivery
I love your Middle-Earth series! Can't wait for the Fall of Gondolin, my favorite First Age battle. Maybe even my favorite battle in all of Tolkien's legendarium!
I just wish Tolkien finished the tale of Tuor coming to Gondolin. That chapter in unfinished tales is one of my favorite things ever writtten. Imo it rivals the grand inquisitor by Dostoevsky.
ive been a huge fan of kings and generals for a long time cannot believe i only just realised this channel existed , fantastic work as ever i honestly feel so lucky creators like you guys exist .
It's a shame that this wouldn't be serielized. The first age alone would take at least 8-10 season to grasp the might of this tale. And it would've been something like Breaking Bad which would be appreciated not instantly but over time, since the slow pacing that must been made for this. So don't keep your hopes up, no company would take the risk of not making instant money with this. But that's why we have people like you my friend who did a very great job on summarizing a complex story in just 2 hours. Every minute was worth watching. Thank you!
This video only scratches the surface of the of epic story of the first age. A brief overview of what happened. For example, Maedros was hanging on that cliff for about 30 years before Fingon rescued him. Elves can not die from starvation, dehydration or disease so he was basically tortured for 30 years straight with no food or water.
I must leave a comment to help my wizards and warriors, this is one of the greatest videos I've seen on this platform, I can't wait for the second age to piece it all together, thank you so much, also your voice is incredible and clear for this kind of video and especially tackling Tolkiens language

You guys are amazing! This video is probably the closest I'll get to actually seeing this story! The way you incorporate the map so we can see exactly where things are taking place. ❤
Morgoth in the time before the lamps - flattens mountains, raises valleys Morgoth in the first age - gets butt kicked by an elf, wins, but is crippled for life. Does not compute.
And just when I thought your couldn't make a video longer than your War of the Rings documentary, you had to divide this one in 2 parts. Tolkien really had a lot under his pen.
It is amazing the work you have done, thank you! I already read the Silmarillion, its very difficult to tell everything but you did an amazing work, I hope you continue this series!
I love that summation Feanor using his incredible skill of oratory to utterly convince a greater race of elves to war forever in his name like some kind of mad irresistible demigod on par with Sauron or Morgoth in strength of character Then takes 2 steps and doesnt know how to actually get there hahaha. Eyes so bright he couldnt see where he was going. Say what you want about him though, he wasnt a coward or a weakling and dying in a fight against ALL the balrogs is really damn metal. Implicitly it wasnt an easy win for them either, placing his death badassedry not too far behind Fingolfins
I’m listening to the audio book for the first time. I must admit, I’ve been very confused. This video helped me so much by putting the image in my brain of what’s been going on. Thank you so much ❤
When I read the silmerilian I was lost to all the strategy of the wars, this pictures it all perfectly, it would make a good series if made by real directors and story tellers than the modern shit workers in Hollywood, rings of power being an example.
Morgoth is prrretty much the baddest of all bad guys. A god, basically..His power and influence were _immense_ in Middle-earth. Fingolfin's challenge to Morgoth in single combat is one of the best moments from the entirety of Tolkien's Legendarium.. Melkor is to me, all in all, my most favorite villain of _any_ medium.
This video only tells a very brief overview of the full story. It only scratches the surface. The more in depth you learn the more appreciation you get for it.
What an awesome video. I have read the Silmarillion several times during my lifetime. Still an amazing story and your channel has done it justice. Well done.
What a pure pleasure to listen to this narration. Clear diction - names pronounced correctly - with no added syllables or r's sounding like w's. I hope there are more. Some of the other folks who are doing these are a real chore to comprehend. One is very superciliously condescending re: Peter Jackson's contribution (in the form of the movies) - yet, wouldn't be doing these narrations if Jackson hadn't brought the story to a world-wide audience. And he certainly has no problem using photos and clips from Jackson's work. Another adds unnecessary syllables to some of the names - Fingon has become Finnigon, and Elven has become Elliven. Silmarillion has become Sillimarillion. Another can't say the consonant "r" to save his life. And yet two others don't even bother to make a pretense of pronouncing ANY of the names or language terms of Tolkein's world . . . even though Tolkein provided the dictionaries and alphabets for us to learn these important details. So listening to your clear narrative - is just such a total treat. I hope you have other videos from Middle Earth . . . I found this one quite by accident, but will be looking for any others. Have subscribed - so am hoping to find more. Thank you !!
"Unfairly blaming much of his suffering on the Valar" ... idk. Feels kinda like he had some valid points. Morgoth was a valar and it was literally their job to deal with him. They let him out, let him do whatever he wanted and failed to protect anyone or the trees or the silmarils and didnt go to get them back. Nor did the ever deal with Ungoliant If we replace Melkor for a crazed maniac and the Valar for the government, I think they'd be pretty liable for the damages their mismanagement caused.
This is beautifully executed. Well researched and explained briskly but accurately. You deserve praise, awards and money. Thank you for those extremely helpful maps and graphics
Tolkein had a much better grasp on mythology and grand strategy while GRRM focuses way too much on dynastic geopolitics and he can't even finish his biggest story. Guys like Asimov, Herbert, Simmons, Bakker and Sapkowski are much better than GRRM when it comes to worldbuilding that understands and merges the small scale and large scale while reinforcing their major themes into competent and dynamic character arcs. The Malazan and Culture series should also get more praise than ASOIAF.
@@yandnat1656 I do like both, that's why I said Martin's work is fun. I've read all the books and watched the entire series and look forward to Winds of Winter, but there is no argument that Tolkien was a much more eloquent prose writer than Martin

You have got to love that music is the tool of creation. And that dissonance within the harmony of that music is the source of corruption. Is that like the flat 5 in music theory? That used to be called the devil's note and was outlawed by the church. Anyone that knows anything about music theory will know what I mean about the flat 5. But for those that don't. Just listen to Black Sabbaths song Black Sabbath. It's also referred to as "the blues note" I just have pictures of a dude throwing in some really nasty blues licks on his six string while everyone else is in a jam just making trees and lakes, this dude is cooking volcanos with SRV licks! 🤘😎🤘

Great video, appreciate it! Im curious though, why did none of the valar and Maia help the elves and men in the first age when a valar morgoth terrorized them endlessly? Did they not care?
Well, their first war against Morgoth caused a lot of destruction. And then the War of Wrath happened, which sank the entire continent of Beleriand into the sea. It's not that they don't help, but they usually end up wrecking their own creation when they do.
Love this channel! Love your narration and the dedication you put in to your videos. A 2 hour morgoth in depth character bio you wont find anywhere else but this channel.

Sauron was a dark Lord but Melkor/Morgoth was literally the creator of darkness and regardless how powerful Sauron was he called Morgoth MASTER! Hope we get a live action Melkor one day but done properly, that would be a sight to see.....
Thank you so much for those videos! These are a real treasure to find and behold a lot of love and compassion for not only my and our beloved universes, worlds and stories, but also for my profession as a author and gamedesigner. Thanks again!
You know I get magic being sort of an unquantifiable and being bigger and stronger makes you more formidable in melee combat. However if a guy with a sword can give you a permanent limp you do not have overwhelming power, you are a dog pile or one instance of bad luck away from being a very leaky and very dead supernatural pincushion. So basically Morgoth Vs Sauron is less like a DBZ Minion and his scary boss and more like Stalin and Beria. If they were so inclined either could probably arrange for the death of the other or even do it themselves.
Fëanor was actually so brutal. Like he pisses me off so much. Fingolfin was the best of the brothers by far and a genuine beast for taking on Melkor 1v1 ❤
welp its kinda true i guess but i think its fine they just show up to some epic scenes and never have too big of an impact that would turn the tide as deus ex machina would, like 1 time they just bail 1 dude out who sure was important and everything but not like it turns around a battle and wins a war or something and the other time they just carry away a corpse to get a proper burial. In Hobbit and LotR i guess they again help out in a few cases where they turn around the battle of five armies in Hobbit and help gandalf escape isengard and save frodo and sam but again they have limited impact its not like they go carry the hobbits to mt doom and end the ring or show up there just in time to kill gollum and allow hobbits to throw in the ring or something but just show up afterwards, you could argue none of the quest would happen without gandalf but thats like at start of the trilogy that hes saved and doesnt rly happen in main parts of the quest just helps set it up
30:25 I didn't realize how terrifying this time was. If you strayed from the LITERAL light of your leaders or holy monuments, you were outside the observable universe. I cant imagine the terror of the entire known world going dark because a giant spider drank the light of the world.

best of luck w/ your continued battle against the primordial evil that is youtube's algorithm
So yeah, let's support these channels to ensure that His Legacy lives on for future generations! Unsullied and unspoilt!
This was a fantastic "Cliff Notes" summary of the rise of Morgoth. Ever since the show the "Rings of Power" debuted I wanted to obtain a once-over-the-world view of the second age as I work to get my head around the books and this helped provide such detailed, visual clarity The story of Beren and Luthien dropped my jaw. I cannot wait to read that book now. Thank you for this documentary.
Wow. The deep dive into this amazing work will take me right the way through Elevenses, Afternoon Tea, Dinner and Supper! 😉 After a good watch through over a meal (or several in this case lol) if I'm not in the mood for music, then these long form and serialized Tolkien videos are my "go-to" for audio accompaniment when busy at work or home. So thankful for this channel. 😌✋ Cheers lads! 🍻
You forgot about breakfast, second breakfast, and lunch!
Lol
Don't forget luncheon!
its great to see the old lore from the silmarillion in an easy to digest format. thanks guys!
This whole Fantastic World lives in one man's brain, RIP Tolkien, you freaking LEGEND!!
Love the voiceover, enough inflection and emotion to keep engaged and interested over the near two hours. As well as keeping a steady volume and cadence so as it’s not difficult to fall asleep to either
When he said "No other race shall oust us", I was ready to kick some Toucas ass, I was hyped.
This simple, video, made with obvious care, ans love, and reverence for Tolkien and his lore, has done so very much more for the telling of a magnificent and ageless classic than any giant conglomerate ever could . From the bottom of my heart thank you. Thank. You for this. From a true Tolkien fan, simply, thank you 😊
This video is just incredible. The story, details, and order is top-notch. My only question is: how and why would someone dislike this..?
I like how this shows that the Elves weren't as united as some think they were
Yeah 3 different elf kinslayings in the first age. 2 of them being for the silmarils and one of them for cool swan boats.
this deserves a series of it's own and have massive scale battles and animations
This video is actually incredible. I'm honestly shocked it has less than a million views.
This is an amazing overview of the wars of Morgoth and the Noldor -- the details, animations and maps are epic - must have taken so much effort to produce. Bravo - excellent :)
I've seen this story on many different middle earth specializing channels but none of them have the production value that you guys do. Very cool video.
The amount of work put in here is phenomenal. Thanks to these animations, I've got a clearer picture of the battles of the First Age
You know Tolkien was metal because he came up with the name **Battle of Unnumbered Tears**
That sounds like a band from Finland.
I just thought he was metal for fighting in World War 1
WORD 🤘🤘🤘
*TL;DR I’m whining and venting because I’m amazed death metal still exists and has a fan base even though many like myself grew out of the edgy phase of listening to it after they were 15*
Of course that’d be the name of a band or a song for that genre, it’s grown men that never got out of their awkward, edge lord phase and made a career out of it.
I like amon amarth they sing about norse mythology and stuff
I love your Middle-Earth series! Can't wait for the Fall of Gondolin, my favorite First Age battle. Maybe even my favorite battle in all of Tolkien's legendarium!
Despite being one of the all time low points 😔
At least Gothmog finally gets his butt kicked.
This is probably one of the best retellings of the silmarillion i've ever seen, great content!
I feel like a bit of a philistine for not getting to grips with the Silmarillion in my early fan days.
Thank Eru Ilúvatar for Wizards and Warriors in making the lore enjoyably digestible.
Much love.❤👍
I love this stuff. The visualization really helps with being able to follow along the densely packed lore of Tolkien.
Feanors Silmarils: Three gems of immeasurable beauty
Fingolfins Balls: Two brass orbs of immeasurable size
Absolutely splendid work. This was a titanic enterprise, and one masterfully fulfilled. Your work is unmatched!
You guys are amazing! This video is probably the closest I'll get to actually seeing this story! The way you incorporate the map so we can see exactly where things are taking place. ❤
Morgoth in the time before the lamps - flattens mountains, raises valleys
Morgoth in the first age - gets butt kicked by an elf, wins, but is crippled for life.
Does not compute.
Morgoth's ring is middle earth itself,he put most of his power in the many beings corrupted and the land.
Thank you for visual and audio interpretation of the best story ever written. Good job
And just when I thought your couldn't make a video longer than your War of the Rings documentary, you had to divide this one in 2 parts.
Tolkien really had a lot under his pen.
This is so well-done, I get goosebumps @1:40:10.
As someone fascinated by the Elder Days, thank you for this awesome production!
wow the quality is insane, I can't imagine how long this took to create
Thank you for your videos. The Lord of the Rings never gets old.
It is amazing the work you have done, thank you! I already read the Silmarillion, its very difficult to tell everything but you did an amazing work, I hope you continue this series!
Tulkas whooped Morgoth with Greco-Roman wrestling, no joke. He cinched in the camel clutch, made him humble.
That's canon.
I love that summation
Feanor using his incredible skill of oratory to utterly convince a greater race of elves to war forever in his name like some kind of mad irresistible demigod on par with Sauron or Morgoth in strength of character
Then takes 2 steps and doesnt know how to actually get there hahaha.
This is a wonderful effort, much appreciated. Only thing I would say is the narrator sounds like a radio reporter from the '30's. It's distracting.
I’m listening to the audio book for the first time. I must admit, I’ve been very confused. This video helped me so much by putting the image in my brain of what’s been going on. Thank you so much ❤
Agreed
When I read the silmerilian I was lost to all the strategy of the wars, this pictures it all perfectly, it would make a good series if made by real directors and story tellers than the modern shit workers in Hollywood, rings of power being an example.
Best video on yt on the topic. Clear, yet not lacking details. Managing to explain a whole lot about the elves and the timeline too
Love the vocabulary you use to describe the events. Amazing work.
Lol... 🐒
Nice to have this story again by your channel, collected and summarized and narrated in one nice video. 👍
God I can't believe it's already finished
This video only tells a very brief overview of the full story. It only scratches the surface. The more in depth you learn the more appreciation you get for it.
Truly wonderful! Been waiting for this since i discovered your channel.
Keep it up. So much to do for the events in the Silmarillion
Both Melkor and Morgoth, to a greater extent, are such metal names! Honestly, Tolkien, gold star.
What an awesome video. I have read the Silmarillion several times during my lifetime. Still an amazing story and your channel has done it justice. Well done.
this is amazing as it gets, this is fantastic. i love everything about this video in all its glory. there are so many great characters in this story.
Beautiful and wonderful video! I gave my comments in the shorter videos.
11:42 - that would be Fëanor’s step mother (not mother in law)
1:13:00. Baren, son of Barahir is to become the First Dunédain Ranger.
The opening animation of Professor Tolkien is just ❤❤❤
"Unfairly blaming much of his suffering on the Valar"
... idk. Feels kinda like he had some valid points. Morgoth was a valar and it was literally their job to deal with him. They let him out, let him do whatever he wanted and failed to protect anyone or the trees or the silmarils and didnt go to get them back. Nor did the ever deal with Ungoliant
If we replace Melkor for a crazed maniac and the Valar for the government, I think they'd be pretty liable for the damages their mismanagement caused.
Didn’t know pretty much 95% of this, the story of Beren and Luthien was so beautiful
This is beautifully executed. Well researched and explained briskly but accurately. You deserve praise, awards and money. Thank you for those extremely helpful maps and graphics
Game of Thrones is fun, but Martin will never be a writer like Tolkien, just reading (or listening in this case) the Doom of Mandos gives me chills
Me too.
The "RR" doesn't make him an equal to JRRT.
Or you could like both, just a thought
@@yandnat1656 I do like both, that's why I said Martin's work is fun. I've read all the books and watched the entire series and look forward to Winds of Winter, but there is no argument that Tolkien was a much more eloquent prose writer than Martin
I really appreciate your hard work and dedication towards these videos. Brillaint video. We know it take lot of time and hard work to make these videos. A huge fan of you from Sri Lanka ❤️🇱🇰🤝🏴
I love how the entire history of events in Tolkien's mythology happened because Melkor was tone deaf.
Thank you for this!
As I am creating a gameworld based on Middle-Earth, this is exactly what drives me through game development.
Very well done! Cheers, bravo to your work 🎉🎉🎉
You have got to love that music is the tool of creation.
It's also referred to as "the blues note"
I just have pictures of a dude throwing in some really nasty blues licks on his six string while everyone else is in a jam just making trees and lakes, this dude is cooking volcanos with SRV licks! 🤘😎🤘
I love your content generally but these videos on Tolkien are some of my all-time faves on UA-cam. Thank you.
This video is what we hoped Rings of Power would be. Kudos to you for creating this ❤
I had no hope for Rings of Power as they sat on the IP for years waiting for Christopher Tolkien to pass.
Great video, keep making more! Your efforts are much appreciated!
this has been so incredibly helpful to watch while reading the silmarillion
This is amazing. Thank you so much for making this!
I clicked so fast on this video. I’m so grateful for these types of videos. Great work.
This video is just amazing, I can't wait for the fo Al chapter to be filled in, you are incredible and the game of thrones videos also rule so freaking hard
Love this. Thanks so much for posting this
These videos are amazing. You can tell how much hard work, time and effort have gone into them. Thank you so much for your work
Great video, appreciate it!
"Our struggle with the algorithm"...love the honesty
Love this channel! Love your narration and the dedication you put in to your videos. A 2 hour morgoth in depth character bio you wont find anywhere else but this channel.
Always remember, all things dance to the tune of Aluvitar leading to a finale supremely complete and beautiful. All things in his domain will witness and bathe in his musical light. Sauron and Frodo will join in glorious dance as they see and hear the genius of Aluvitar🧙🏾♂️
I just NEEEEEEEEED the War of Wrath part!! You're killing me by leaving me on this cliffhanger (of a story I know by heart but let's not go there)!!
Fëanor was actually so brutal. Like he pisses me off so much. Fingolfin was the best of the brothers by far and a genuine beast for taking on Melkor 1v1 ❤
Fantastic video. I'll listen to it many more times I'm sure
I absolutely love these videos!! Liked and subbed!
So this king of eagles is basically the deus ex machina. 🤣🤣
True-ish, but we get Checkhov's Eagle in LOTR and Silmarillion so I'm ok with it.
welp its kinda true i guess but i think its fine they just show up to some epic scenes and never have too big of an impact that would turn the tide as deus ex machina would, like 1 time they just bail 1 dude out who sure was important and everything but not like it turns around a battle and wins a war or something and the other time they just carry away a corpse to get a proper burial. In Hobbit and LotR i guess they again help out in a few cases where they turn around the battle of five armies in Hobbit and help gandalf escape isengard and save frodo and sam but again they have limited impact its not like they go carry the hobbits to mt doom and end the ring or show up there just in time to kill gollum and allow hobbits to throw in the ring or something but just show up afterwards, you could argue none of the quest would happen without gandalf but thats like at start of the trilogy that hes saved and doesnt rly happen in main parts of the quest just helps set it up
i guess battle of the five armies was the biggest deus ex machina where they show up at basically the climax of hobbit and save the day basically
Amazing doc! Thanks for the effort, it really is a jewel for Tolkien fans!
30:25 I didn't realize how terrifying this time was. If you strayed from the LITERAL light of your leaders or holy monuments, you were outside the observable universe. I cant imagine the terror of the entire known world going dark because a giant spider drank the light of the world.
Tulkas has nothing to do with the sea, you are thinking of Osse. One of the better videos this site has done on Tolkien. as usual though there are a number of incorrect pronunciations and facts. but all in all a very good effort.
